that was interesting. we start off our thursday morning right now post debate. glad you're with us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. nothing to debate about in the bay area. we love the weather. >> temperatures going up more today, back into the 80s, we'll see more of that this morning. we still have those typical cool spots like palo alto and places in the north bay. that's where we have our 40s. warmer temperatures this afternoon on tap for you. a lot of places yesterday. upper 70s, into 80s. even san francisco up to 76 degrees today. we have rain in the forecast, but i'll get to that when we get there. we'll talk to mike about the morning commute. >> that's what folks are saying about the morning commute. we'll get there when we get there. it's very clear. in san francisco, even the crash i've been tracking for about an hour, northbound 280, a smooth, easy drive getting towards al meade difficult.

the screen is blank, so i'll hand it back to you guys. now to the breaking news right now. flames broke out overnight in the castro at an unoccupied building, quickly spreading to two adjacent homes there. several people were living in those homes. they're now out of a place to stay. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live. we understand some firefighters were hurt trying to battle the fire. >> good morning, laura and sam. i'm told by san francisco fire, there were three firefighters injured. they're recovering at a nearby hospital. i want to show you the structures affected. we have one structure here occupied by an elderly couple, the structure in the middle unoccupied and another structure to the left. two adults with a child in there. it was the middle structure that was unoccupied is where the biggest flames were when fire crews showed up. they just tweeted out some video. altogether, we ur ear talking

seven folks who were displaced who occupied one of those units. and the other that included two adults with their child. none of the folks were injured and they're receiving assistance from the american red cross. also told there is a missing cat that crews are still looking for. back to the firefighters that were injured. we got this update from san francisco fire. one firefighter has a possible fractured arm. the others have cuts and bruises and recovering in the hospital. that fire was first reported around 12:00 a.m. before crews got it under control around 2:00 a.m. no word on the cause of the fire. as you see here, the street is shut down as they continue their investigation. back to you in the newsroom. >> pete, thank you very much for that update. we appreciate that. just in this morning, preliminary 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck lake county about 3:45 this morning, centered right near the town of cobb not far from middletown. that's the same area ravaged by the valley fire a year ago.

so far no reports of injury or damage. police investigating a deadly shooting last night near a san jose elementary school. police say a man walked into regional medical center with a gunshot wound before 9:00 p.m. police later determined the man had been shot in a car near doug hill elementary school near highway 101. the victim then drove the car to the hospital where he died a short time later. the victim so far has not been identified. from everything i see has no respect for this person. >> well, that's because he'd rather had a pep puppet as president. >> no puppet. you're the puppet. >> name calling last night among other forms of conversation. the last presidential debate is now over. you hear vladimir putin was one of the topics. >> just one of the many. >> this morning there's reaction to donald trump saying he may not accept the election results if he loses.

no word on what caused the crash. the new year will begin with a long-awaited start of a highly anticipated murder trial. according to "mercury news," january 3rd is now the firm start date for opening statements in the trial against anton anyone torres, accused in the murder of sierra lamar. the body was never found. the judge issued the start date yesterday. juror questioning is scheduled to take place in mid november. funeral services are going to take place today, laura, for a beloved elderly woman killed in a home invasion robbery. mourningers will honor miss flo, 88 years old at the time. flo douglas was affectionately called mis flo. she died from injuries suffered in the robbery. zach quinn cuen was caught using her credit kaurds and driving

intensifying. right now iraqi special forces are moving in on a nearby town also controlled by militants. american troops are guiding iraqi and kurdish troops to take back iraq's second largest city. the massive operation is in its fourth day. lieutenant governor gavin newsom is getting on board what some have called a financial boondoggle. he changed his mind on the proposed california high-speed rail project. in sacramento yesterday he said he's no longer against the projected $68 billion effort. he withdrew his support two years ago criticizing the ever changing business plans and the ballooning cost. now he said he's 100% looking for a funding source for the train if elected governor in 2018. at least seven deaths right now are confirmed from the powerful typhoon that rolled through the philippines. cameras caught the fury. you see a piece of it there.

relentless winds and driving rains made landfall, a category 5, the strongest in three years. communications and power have been cut off in many towns there. so far there are no reports of major destruction. some are saying the number of casualties could have been far worse. >> just trying to recover from that is going to be a tough one. in our neck of the woods certainly nothing like that. we'll start so. >> we'll see rain later, next week, but not in the short term. temperatures have been getting each and every day a little warmer. today we're going to see the heat peak at its warmest, mid 80s for inland valleys. gilroy at 46 degrees this morning. palo alto at 48 and santa rosa at 49. napa 47 as well. later this afternoon you'll notice the temperatures warming up. 85 today. even at the coastline, offshore winds that will warm quickly for places like half moon bay.

76 in san francisco and a slew of 80s for the east bay, river more, walnut creek, san jose reaching into the low 80s. it's because high pressure is in control driving our winds offshore. look to our north, there is still rainfall into places like portland and seattle. that's been the trend for the past week or so. that storm track will sag south as we head to the next couple days and then as we head towards next week. here is that rain i was telling you about. it can be lining up as soon as sunday night across parts of the north bay as we head towards the end of the rest of the week we'll be looking at a few more storm systems slide on in. for tuesday and wednesday, still determined to see if we'll see rain or not. computers models going back and forth. the rainfall amounts have been increasing. we will talk about when we will see this rain move in and when exactly it will move out coming up in my next report. plus a look at the seven-day forecast in a bit. mike will get you to work on time. the man of the hour.

>> good morning, anthony. i'll take that hour. more than i get some days. over toward the bay a lot of breaks right now, a good break on your drive. north bay, no delays everything green for our speed sensors. those drive tierms across the east bay. upper east shore are looking at 12 minutes from highway 4 through the maze itself. at the minimum for most of these dries, an issue for b.a.r.t., a minor one, a ten-minute delay reported out of san francisco and heading toward the east bay. some equipment problems reported on the tracks. everything throughout the east bay all right. we're also showing you travel times through the tri-valley. i showed you the earlier live shots through dublin. from grand line road toward the dublin interchange, 23 minutes. the traffic flowtion nicely westbound. there's a truck behind me on my right-hand shoulder that has cleared from the westbound direction. no delays on the spans.

highest level in 15 months following data showing another decline in u.s. crude supplies. look for reports on unemployment and home sales. also we get earnings from the likes of travelers, verizon and microsoft. the dow rising 40 points to 18,202. the nasdaq up two to 5,246. tesla makes the big announcement about the future of driverless cars. ceo elon musk says all new tesla vehicles, model s, x and 3 will now come with hardware to make them fully self-driving when government regulations allow. this includes eight cameras, a dozen sensors and faster radar. the new package will cost $8,000. musk says he expects by the end of the year that a tesla car will be able to drive from los angeles to new york without the need for a single touch on the wheel. google has reportedly struck a deal with cbs to carry the network on the new web tv service. reports say it's also in talks

morning. cal osha is holding a meeting this morning to discuss regulations to prevent violence in health care workplaces. california nurses association support that idea. they'll be rallying today in oakland. also in oakland, the 50th anniversary commemoration of the black panther party starts today. the oakland museum is hosting a conference asking where do we go from here. that conference starts at 11:00 a.m. let's close this half hour by going back to las vegas where the pptal candidates met. >> outside the venue, they built a wall of taco trucks. 35 food trucks parked outside the trump international hotel in las vegas for most of the day. of course, that was part of a protest from the culinary union in nevada. you may remember earlier this year, a donald trump supporter warned that the expansion of latino culture could lead to taco trucks on every corner. some people see it as a protest. i see it as lunch.
