the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights are on. no problems out of the maze. look at your drive times, holding steady out of the altamont pass. grant line road to the dublin interchange, 24 minutes. no slowing for pleasanton or sunol. back to you. >> thank you very much. 6:01 right now. a frightening home invaks in hillsborough. police looking for several men who held a woman at gunpoint while ransacking her home. bob redell is live in hillsborough with the full story. bob? >> reporter: hillsborough police are asking neighbors, people who live nearby to check their surveillance cameras to see if they have video of the suspects coming and going from her house this past wednesday night at a home near marlboro and whitwell roads. according to police, three men all wearing gloves and black hooded sweatshirts entered the home through the garage door

that was open and the interior door that was unlocked. one man held the woman at gunpoint while the other two stole items from the home. we spoke with the woman's husband who didn't want to be identified. >> they pistol whipped her, threatened her and put a gun to her head. >> i've been here 28 years and i can count on one hand the amount of times we've had a crime of this nature. >> reporter: hillsborough police tell us they do have several leads in the case but no arrests. a captain tells us this home invasion robbery is strikingly similar to one that took place last week in nearby portola valley. investigators have not yet been able to establish definitively between those two crimes. live outside hillsborough police headquarters, bob redell "today in the bay." thank you very much, bob. at 6:02. no problems on cal berkeley's frat row ahead of the football game. a voluntary suspension of all on

site social activity for sororities and fraternities. councils have decided the suspension will last until the council can evaluate risk management practices at a et mooing tomorrow. >> happening today in oakland, a police officer accused of engaging with a prostitute and tipping her off about confidential vice operations is expected to be arraigned. this is the latest scandal for a police department that has been operating under a cloud of controversy for months. 26-year-old officer ryan walterhouse is facing two felony obstruction of justice charges as well as misdemeanor prostitution charge. according to court documents, walterhouse informed a sex worker about stings on two different occasions. oakland mayor libby schaaf is outraged, especially because the city is already dealing with another sex abuse investigation. >> it is incredibly disturbing that in light of what happened

this summer any officer could think that it was at all acceptable to engage in this type of behavior. >> the other case we mentioned involves a teenager named jasmine. it led to several bay area police officers being arrested. officials say the two cases are not related. there is a shakeup in the sex abuse scandal. late yesterday evening attorney pamela price says she's no longer representing the woman at the center of this case. the police sex abuse scandal involves dozens of east bay law enforcement officers. in a statement, price says she believes, quote, jasmine deserves a second chance at a first class life and she would never abandon her in that ave e effort. effective immediately plies will no longer be representing her. no further explanation given. on the peninsula maybe you were among those caught in it, some say it was the worst traffic jam they've ever endured, a massive backup during last night's commute on highway

101. it happened after an rv camper carrying model rockets and a propane tank started spewing flames. it didn't just bring traffic to a standstill, it literally had some drivers standing on the freeway. >> absolutely crazy. >> couldn't have happened at a worse time. it's commute hour, everyone trying to get home. >> all lanes were closed for more than an hour. the northbound direction didn't even get going again for at least two hours. the chp says the rv was transporting model rockets when one apparently exploded. luckily everyone made it out safely and no one was cited. >> hours before that, another freeway backup farther north. the bomb squad called to investigate a car parked off highway 101 and interstate 80 about 11:00 in the morning. police say a suspicious note was left on the car that included the word bomb on it. both freeways were closed and a shelter in place was ordered at the nearby hall of justice after a three-hour-long investigation.

the bomb squad determined the car did not pose any threats to public safety. also scary moments yesterday at a san francisco skate park. >> the bomb squad called out there, very busy day for the bomb squad. there was a report of a suspicious device at the soma skate park on debose avenue. crews determined the device was not an explosive and the shelter in place was lifted about 9:00 last night. 6:06. a public apology for and act of vandalism that outraged many people. 19-year-old jared vance last night addressed veterans in danville. that's where last year he spray painted the veterans war memorial. cameras not allowed inside to hear what he said. they could only shoot through the window. those who heard his apology say he regrets what he did and now understands his actions hurt many people. weekends just in front of us, a lot of people making plans.

hallelujah. >> and the weather will be cooperative, unlike last weekend where we had lot of rain in the santa cruz mountains right now clear skies, san jose 54 degrees. hour-by-hour temperatures into the upper 70s. average high is 73. it will be another day of above average temperatures around the bay area. not quite as warm as the highs we saw yesterday. 78 in san jose, 70s in san francisco. 80s in the tri-valley today. the weekend will involve more clouds. we think those rain chances should hold off until about late sunday night in the north bay and the rain does come back monday to tuesday of next week. mike? >> drive times are great right now, as you would imagine, this time on a friday. light, easy build, no problems showing up on our maps. mild slowdown. for drive times, in the south bay, despite mild slowing through 101, between 680 and 880, still just 20 minutes from the split with 85 to the join with 85 in mountain view. the san mateo bridge across the bay westbound, we picked up the volume a tad bit. reports that one of the trucks

maze. the backup filled in because the metering lights are on. the peninsula, nothing like yesterday when we had the rv fire. minimum eight minutes from sfo heading um from 92. let's hope it stays clear. well, construction of a tunnel running under highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains is getting under way, it's actually not for cars. caltrans has agreed to spend more than $3 million to build a so-called wildlife corridor at highway 17 and laurel road. it will allow dear and mountain lions to cross under the high y highway. if add deshl funding is secured through measure d, the project could be completed by 2020. a little turbulence for travelers, maybe more than a little as they are ramping up a massive renovation at sfo's terminal one, which means people traveling through terminal one will have to deal with closures for the next two years. it's a $2.5 billion project

taking place in phases. when it's completed, terminal one will include central security and baggage handling along with new detail and dining space. passenger operations are not expected to be impacted, but an interim boarding area b will be set up to help with the backups. more troubs for takata this morning. government officials confirm a california woman died last month as a result of a faulty air bag. the national highway traffic safety administration says the woman was driving a honda civic when she crashed in riverside county. that civic was first recalled in 2008. the repairs were never finished. this is the 11th death in the united states linked to those faulty air bags. more than 100 million inflaters have been recalled worldwide because the air bags can inflate with too much force causing shrapnel to spray into the vehicle. going to the highest bidder which apparently is no one. san francisco-based twitter has hard choices this morning. >> it put itself up for sale.

scott mcgrew, nobody bought it. >> twitter with nobody wanting to buy it has to figure out, laura, what the future is. it was oriented towards the sale. now the company is going to have to consider something else, possibly cuts. the company's stock fell hard over the past week or so after sales force said it wouldn't buy twitter. at which time are reports profits next thursday. i think we'll hear fairly big changes then. prosecutors now believe a worker at the national security agency stole far more secrets than first suspected. harold martin is accused of taking copies of sensitive documents and the software the nsa uses to spy on people here in america and overseas. it's now thought martin copied as many as five million sensitive documents. hackers attacked a data center that handles the internet naming system. that's causing slowdowns but is

largely fixed now. it's getting crowded in the international space station. a few minutes ag goal the three astronauts who blasted off from earth on wednesday joined the three astronauts who were already there. three russians, two americans, one from japan. the woman on the left, guys, one of the americans, that's kate ruben from napa. she'll get in the capsule that brought the new astronauts and return home to earth. she worked at the u.s. army felt working on ebola. you know the in the movies that level four bio hazard with the space suits and everything, that's what she did. i think she's not after rated of anything. >> not even martians. >> not martians, not ebola, space, space capsules. she's my hear row. >> no kidding. 6:15 right now. bierp beware, apple claims about 90% of chargers sold on amazon are fake. the tech giant says the new jersey-based company has been

as yesterday. still these numbers well above average. 78 in san jose. a few spots south of downtown, could see some low 80s around cupertino towards morgan hill. look at san francisco, could see low 70s south of downtown. peninsula temperatures in the mid 70s. north bay, highs in the upper 70s, close to 80s in a few spots. should be walnut creek out towards pleasanton and livermore, highs approaching 80 degrees. 70 today, we'll see cooling as we go through the weekend. north of interstate 80 sunday night into monday, might see a stray shower or two. nothing much for the weekend. swells of 68 feet. on the north coast north of bodega bay. monday morning you're starting to see the rain dropping south by monday evening. that's the first of two rain chances we're tracking in the seven-day forecast. round one, monday to tuesday, brief midweek break and an

interesting setup next week we could see heavier rain in southern california on friday. the projection puts higher totals we think around the north bay where we see more chances for rainfall as we get through this up coming weekend. around san francisco, cooler with more clouds, dry for the weekend and monday to tuesday, the rain makes a comeback. north bay locations might see rain north, talking sonoma county north by sunday evening. most of the rain should hold off monday and tuesday of next week. >> a calm drive right now. it's friday so an easier lighter build, although a couple of crashes, one of the dublin interchange. i'm watching that, so far no lanes reported blocked, chp will get more information coming up. in san jose, slowing north of 680 cleared from 101. no problems, both of these roadways, 85 and 101 around the entire silicon valley, 20 minutes for the travel. we'll show you the travel times approaching the tri-valley, 26

target is recalling these gel clings that you may have in your home. take a look. it involves about 127,000 halloween-themed designs. they have two non-replaceable cell button batteries. i tell you that because it can separate and expose the batteries and posing a choking hazard for children. that can be very, very serious. maybe your kids are checking out some kind of video screen right now. this morning child development experts issued new recommendations on kids' media usage. it's designed to get rid of guilt. instead of keeping kids away from online games, tv and social media, parents are encouraged to join in the fun. the updated guidelines represent a shift to making mom and dad

on campus because of recent accusations of sexual assault. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joining us from uc berkeley. these alleged assaults actually happened off campus? >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. you are correct, they happened at an off-campus frat party. you have the fraternities and sororities taking action and volunteering to suspend the parties for the time being. a big issue of concern for folks on campus when it comes to safety. look at the latest stats from the uc berkeley police department. it says 22 cases of rape reported on campus in 2015. of course those aren't all related to fraternities and sorority parties. i want to read part of the e-mail sent out by the council to different chapter presidents. it reads, quote, the mem brerps of the executive board of the

interfraternity council at the university of california berkeley on behalf of our 1500 constituents wish to express our condemnation of the vial and unjust incidents that have recently occurred in our community. while we have no reason to believe these were committed by fraternity men on campus, it's disheart earning that they occurred on fraternity property. you'll see beefed up patrols by uc berkeley's pd. no timing on when the suspension will be lifted. i'm told the fraternities and sororities will have a council meeting to discuss the issue later today. live at uc berkeley, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:32 this morning. police are searching for a man who claimed to be an undercover officer who tried to lure a de anza community college student into his car. it happened just before 9:00 on wednesday night in lot a at the college in cupertino. the victim said the man told her she shouldn't be walking alone

and told her to get in his car. the student was able to get to the car safely when another car drove in between them. police say the man was driving a black late model four-door bmw with heavily intoed windowtion and there were two passengers in that car. investigators in mountain view are searching for more possible victims after a man was arrested on child molestation charges. 73-year-old donald morris was arrested in nevada. authorities say he once worked as an apartment manager in mountain view. police say he committed those crimes several years ago in the bay area. and the evidence only surfaced later this month. a car crash sent a mother and three young children to the hospital late last night. san ramon police say the mother slammed into a light pole on crow canyon road near el capitan drive about 8:15 last night. the 4-year-old boy was airlifted to children's hospital in oakland. two other children and the mother were also taken to the hospital. all four victims are expected to survive. a short time ago police told us

that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash but they're awaiting results from toxicology tests to make it official. a long road to recovery for a san francisco police officer who was shot in the head while in the line of duty. officer kevin downs is out of the hospital this morning and he's in a rehab facility. police told the community in a meeting last night that officer downs is paralyzed in one of his arms and his legs. the department also detailed the gun battle near stern grove between officers and the shooter nicholas mcwherter. >> he came out and fired at the officers. they returned fire and there was a shootout. he went down. they stopped firing. they then did a tactical move-back and waited for the special operations bureau to come anywhere they flash bang -- >> you hear from chief toney chaplin. police say they found nearly two dozen rounds in the bushes where the suspect was hiding. they're reviewing body camera video from the officers involve.

this morning a man in the east bay was assaulted. casey pletz says it all started when he confronted young men for being loud near his home by walt disney elementary in sapp ramon. that's when a martial arts fighter started punching and kicking him. then others joined in. >> i ended up getting choked out and was unconscious. they proceeded to kick me in the face and body. >> a neighbor heard that attack and stepped in. all four suspects have been arrested. politics now, in the race for the white house, both candidates are in battleground states today. they are busy, but just hours ago we witnessed a face-to-face in what was supposed to be a lighthearted charity dinner. >> with awkward moments i would say. maybe cringe-worthy moments. the good news is that $6 million was raised for catholic charities for children in new york city. the event was designed to be republicans and democrats laughing together. just take a look. >> reporter: donald trump finally shook hands with hillary clinton. the republican candidate started off his speech being political. >> hilly believes it's vital to deceive the people by having one public policy -- >> boo -- >> -- and a totally different policy in private. >> reporter: after a round of boos, trump finally got the message this night was about fun and charity. >> this is the first time ever, ever, that hillary is sitting down and speaking to major corporate leaders and not getting paid for it.

6:37, watch this. for the first time one of the most dangerous surf competitions in the world will now be co-ed. six female surfers will be in the waters off half moon bay for the titans of mavericks. organizers say it's about time as women become more prominent in the world of big wave surfing. the with women's event will be held on day one of maverick which begins november 1st. the california coastal commission adopted a request by a female activist. >> it's amazing that we're going to have -- we're actually going to see women from around the world coming to maverick and putting it on the line. you've got to put it on the line when you see that monster wave standing out in front of you, who is going to second-guess who is going to go. >> the opening ceremony will be held today at mavericks beach. >> your hanging ten painted toes now. >> hanging 25.

that's how high in feet some of those waves get. it takes some spine to do it. men or women. >> there you go. want to check in with rob who has a look at the forecast today. maybe a peek of that weekend, too. >> the weekend looking good if you want to head to the coast, wave heights not up to 20 feet like we typically see around maverick. you see northwest winds offshore of half moon bay at 27 miles per hour. the onshore winds a little cooler today, along the coast, 66 half moon bay, 70s in san francisco, 78 in san jose. then we'll see more clouds and more cooling this weekend. the rain chances will hold off until late sunday in the north bay and for everybody else, late monday evening into tuesday, you see a weekend cooldown with a few more clouds as we head into sunday. >> a quiet morning but we do have a crash on the nimitz freeway heading through oakland as the volume builds. we see typical slowing patterns. approaching 29th, the slowing on the southbound side, although the crash reported on the

you may have seen soda tax ads that shows senator sanders against proposed taxes here. the one cent soda tax is on the ballot in san francisco, oakland and albany. the anti-tax ads says sanders opposed a similar tax in philadelphia. he says he opposed that tax specific lip because it was too high. he's telling the soft drink industry to stop using his name in these ads. sanders says he's not taken a position on the proposed taxes in the bay area. forging a new blueprint. after what happened at millennium tower, the group behind the now sinking project is changing how it's building another project. that includes new construction. it will now run the piles all the way to the bedrock, something not done to the mill yen yum tower. that caused millennium tower to sink and tilt. the new project was going to have a matt and pile foundation similar to millennium tower which did not rest on bedrocks, but in light of the millennium

investigation, developers have changed their minds and they're opting for the more expensive bedrock foundation. right before this building exploded in portland this week, a firefighter risked his life to try to get people out. it was certainly a close call. lieutenant peter st. john is still in the hospital, both of his legs were broken. officials say minutes after construction workers hit a gas line, st. john and hips crew were the first on the scene. as they got everyone out, the building exploded, throwing st. john across the street. listen to him describe the moments at that building blew up. >> i think there was fire because i saw orange. all i know is after an initial bla blast, i must have blacked out for a little bit because next thing i knew i was on the ground. >> st. john is getting a lot of praise. he says he's not a hero. >> a lot of families are going to want to give him a big hug. 6:46. fremont's new downtown construction crosses a major milestone. here is new video of main street

today, cooling into the weekend. it looks like a dry forecast for most of the weekend. areas north of interstate 80 might see a stray shower sunday night. look at the time frame here. sunday afternoon, northern sonoma county might see light rain sunday evening. it looks like it will hold off until about monday evening and monday night before the first of two weather systems bring rain back to the bay area. we're beyond the weekend now. monday to tuesday you see the chances of rain. wednesday a bit of a midweek break. thursday to friday, the next system in, as we add everything up, next seven to eight days, looks like the north bay will see the most out of this next round of rain as we see the totals adding up starting monday. the weekend not as warm. still pretty nice, increasing clouds saturday and sunday into san francisco, highs back in the 60s. locations cooling off with more clouds as we head towards sunday. rain returning on sunday. now issues for your oakland commute. >> we have a typical build except for oakland. i can sort out the problem -- the discrepancy with the crash.

south bay has building in the northbound direction. we're focusing on the southbound slowing we saw in oakland. the crash is on the northbound side right in the fast lane, visible. so the headlights and the flashing lights now that chp is on scene, big distraction south of 880. let's show the view from the coliseum as well. on the northbound side, traffic stacking up at 66 past high, past park, all the way to the scene of the crash just north of there as well. that's a big delay for 880. 580 is clear through the area. looking at 580, the travel time through the tri-valley. grant line road to the dublin interchange, just 26 minutes, mild slowing out of the altamont. also in the area, vineyard we heard is closed because of an early morning crash where a car did hit a power pole, that's vineyard at isabelle. isabelle is open. that's better news for the tri-valley. back to you. >> trying to keep your cool during that traffic. we do know dogs help provide valuable therapy to people. now donkeys getting in on the
