take a live look ouide.... bay bridge from trsure land good morning. thanks for joining us. you're watching "today in the bay." we're taking a live look at the bay bridge from treasure island. thanks so much for waking up with us. we're going to get our first check of our microclimate forecast, and we do have some wet weather heading our way. >> it looks like if you're up in the north bay, you could be seeing an early morning wet commute as you head to work on monday, but for now we'll enjoy the sunshine. partly cloudy right now. a few lingering clouds but have no fear, we should be clearing out quite nicely. 52 degrees in the east bay. san francisco 54 and the highs will be in the 70s.

it's going to be slightly cooler but similar to what we saw yesterday. overall we are expecting sunshine across the board with the exception of a few clouds that should start rolling in at about 8:00 or 9:00. you should start seeing some of the heavier clouds and that's all thanks to a pacific storm system that's going to be making its arrival as early as sunday night into monday morning. i'll have more details on exactly what you can look forward to in your full forecast. >> and for knew we get some sunshine. >> for now we enjoy the sunshine. we want to tell you about a developing story in the east bay. s.w.a.t. teams are scouring the streets of oakland after multiple people were shot late last night. here is what we know right now. police were called to ritchie street and van kroft afternoon around 11:30 where they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. they were taken to local hospitals but we still gont know their conditions. officers say an hour after arriving more gunshots rang out blocks away near the corner of 77th street. s.w.a.t. teams have been searching that area for several

hours and we will update you when we get new information. turning to decision 2016 now. with just over two weeks until election day, the presidential candidates are hitting the campaign trail hard and courting latino vote nationwide. last night in san jose the hispanic foundation of silicon valley honored those who had given back to their community, but the buzz offstage was all about the presidential election, including concerns over how trump and clinton would handle immigration reform and education. >> a lot of hispanic families are concerned about their safety here in this country. a lot of them are immigrants from -- obviously from latin america, and they're concerned about being able to live here freely like they have. >> many at the event are still undecided. despite trump's promise of aggressive immigration reform, they're not completely sold on the idea of a clinton presidency either. election day is two weeks from tuesday.

well, the campaign trail took hillary clinton to pittsburgh where she rallied supporters and made an appeal to voters who are wavering in their support for donald trump, telling them she wants to be their president. >> probably no people who are thinking about voting for donald trump. i understand that they need a president who cares about them, will listen to them, and i want to be their president too. >> meanwhile, donald trump was in gettysburg, pennsylvania, running out his agenda for his first hyundais as president but his plan was overshadowed by his own comments about that growing list of women accusing him of sexual assault. >> every woman lied when they came forward to hurt my campaign. total fabrication. the events never happened, never. all of these liars will be sued after the election is over.

>> now, those comments came on the same day that an 11th accuser stepped forward. she claims donald trump hugged and kissed her without consent. jessica drake said it happened a decade ago after a golf tournament in lake tahoe. she claims he tried to offer her money and the use of his private plane in exchange for spending the night with him. >> asked me to return to his suite and have dinner with him. he also invited me to a party. i declined. donald then asked me, what do you want? how much? >> the trump campaign issued a statement denying all of drake's claims. meantime, it appears early voting is surging. as of this morning, more than 5.3 million votes have been cast, far ahead of the pace at this time in 2012. balloting is under way in 34

up to essentially demonize him. >> lopez's family is suing sonoma county in an ongoing wrongful death suit. a family on the peninsula is without their home this morning after a fire ripped through their house. take a look at the fire there in millbrae. this was the view from frontera way from interstate 280. the fire department tells us the flames broke out around 3:30 yesterday afternoon and were put out an hour later. fortunately, no one was hurt, but the kitchen and several rooms upstairs had a lot of damage. well, a warning for parents and children in san carlos. two 11-year-old girls reported a suspicious encounter with a man. the encounter happened friday afternoon near the corner of laurel and cherry streets. the girls say the man approached them and asked to buy their scooters. they declined and rode away, but it's man came back asking the girls if, quote, they wanted to have some fun. the man is described as white, in his 50s with gray hair and blue eyes. he has an average build and was

wearing a green shirt and blue pants. a suspect is in custody this morning accused of a crash that severely injured a horse. the chp says tips from the public led them to the 32-year-old man who is now in the martinez jail. investigators tell us the suspect slammed his car into the back of a horse trailer. the crash happened more than two weeks ago near concord. the horse is recovering, but veterinarians say the animal can never be ridden again. and much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a move that outraged california veterans. why the pentagon's forcing them to repay thousands of dollars. plus, a test drive. new bay bridge ramps open ahead of tomorrow's busy workday rush. bridge from treasean

black panther party was founded in oakland. since then the group's taken a stand against police brutality nationwide. last night at a gala dinner, it celebrated the anniversary. "today in the bay's" christie smith has the story from the oakland museum of california. >> reporter: a gala celebration marking 50 years since the black panther party was founded. >> people have adapted and improved and expanded what the black panther party could do, and they've taken examples, they've learned from it. >> reporter: the celebration put on by former members along with the three-day conference in oakland. the theme, where do we go from here? >> i hope that before i leave the planet, that there will be people like black lives matter movement who will not only carry it forward, but that other people will join. >> reporter: the conference came after the oakland museum opened a new exhibit on the panther legacy in oakland. >> clearly there's a lot of

different thoughts and feelings about the panthers, 50 years since they were created, and we acknowledge that. there are many opportunities for people to share their thoughts and feelings. >> reporter: protests and calls of injustice in the black community are sill stissued tod. the panthers tactics, being armed, stunned the mainstream. there was unrest, clashes with police, and violence, but the panthers called for self empowerment and social justice, a movement being remembered. >> you look at criminal justice reform, when you look at affordable housing, when you look at affordable health care, all the issues the panthers raised are still relevant today. >> nbc bay area. >> still ahead, california voters shut it down years ago, about you it could be making a comeback. we'll tell but that plus an important futures initiative on this year's ballot. plenty of sunshine before that rain moves in to the bay area.

welcome back, everyone. you're taking a look at the sunrise over the eastern portion of the bay bridge from treasure island. well, the pentagon wants its money back. nearly 10,000 california national guard soldiers have been ordered to repay huge enlistment bonuses. this comes a decade after they signed up to serve in iraq and afghanistan. now, "the los angeles times" reports the pentagon demanded the money back after audits revealed overpayments. the national guard offered the bonuses of $15,000 or more at the height of the two wars. soldiers say they feel betrayed at having to repay it's money. back to our decision 2016 coverage, two ballot measures next month will affect children in california's public schools. one wants to extend taxes on the richest 1.5% of californians to pay for schools, and the other would change how english is

taught. "today in the bay's" chuck coppola has that story. >> reporter: a rousing rally at santa clara county cta offices. teachers saying the money raised by prop 55 would help recruit new teachers and restore cutbacks made during the great recession. >> after you will the cuts, teachers weren't just leaving for better paying districts. they were leaving for a new profession. >> if proposition 55 does not pass, i fear that there will be another cycle of cuts that will take years to recover from. >> reporter: the other measure, prop 58, would expand foreign language immersion programs but also end english taught in english only. ron, a former state g gubernatorial candidate, is against 58. >> 20 years ago something like 70% of all the young latino immigrant children were being placed for years in these spanish almost only programs, and we're having a hard time learning english. >> reporter: supporters of prop

58 say the measure will improve california's next generation of employees and business leaders. >> we're competing directly with other world economies. why not give our students the tools to be able to close that deal in a language where they're doing business? >> reporter: chuck coppola, nbc bay area news. new on and off-ramps at treasure island are seeing their first drivers this weekend. they replaced the tight turns and mare raising merges drivers were forced to cope with for years. if you're heading westbound and exiting to yerba buena and treasure island, the exit will now be on the right. for years it was on the left. and today the final passage of the pedestrian path will open as well. you can go all the way from the east bay to yerba buena and treasure islands. and we're back with another look at the weekend forecast. >> we have not one but two systems that could be coming in through the workweek ahead. we're going to pay close attention to that in terms of

rainfall. the models are showing iffy totals right now. they're going to be affecting different parts of the area. it looks like the first system could be coming to the north bay as early as tonight, but right now partly cloudy skies, temperatures remain in the 50s south bay, peninsula. san francisco looking pretty nice out there. we are expecting to see mostly sunshine yet again as those temperatures climb back into those 70s for a second day in a row. yesterday we did hit our predicted high of 73 degrees, and today we should be topping out at about 72, 73. san francisco, half moon bay, not a big difference as well. also in those lower 60s. but we are tracking that rainfall that we've been talking about, and we've got the pacific storm system that's going to bring in rain as early as monday morning for some commuters. now, sunday, right now we're not seeing a lot of activity. we are going to start seeing that cloud cover though as we head into the later part of the day, so when you go out to dinner, it's not going to be cold, but you are going to start seeing some more clouds out there. it's going to be cooling. we are expecting to see north

bay is the majority of the rainfall. it will stay up there in the north bay through monday morning, but those rain chances z stick around through tuesday. today, san jose, 73 degrees we'll stop out again. mission at 69. overall, north bay similar conditions as well. we'll remain in the 60s. watt nu walnut creek, 71. i want to look at future cast. now, if you leave early for work tomorrow and you live or work up in the north bay area, you could start seeing some rain as early as 7:00 a.m. fast forward to about 6:30, and the models right now are showing it moving south through the region. now, we weren't expecting to see the majority of the rainfall until tuesday before a second system does come in. by thursday future cast showing wednesday it clears out. but by thursday we see the second storm system that should be tracking rain more south, which means widespread all across the bay area.

in terms of those rain totals, it's showing a majority of this rain, this is by thursday, this is that second system, that's showing north bay all through the south bay really getting hit with that heavy rainfall. but our estimated rain totals, well, they're going back and forth. those models keep switching. we are expecting to see about a half inch in san francisco through monday and tuesday. now, this is, of course, not including that second storm system that's supposed to come into play on sunday. now, the north bay, that's where they're going to see the majority of that rainfall. probably up even to a foot of rain according to the models right now, but again that's iffy right now. that second system showing it widespread through the bay area by thursday and friday. that could even carry over rain into saturday. now, san jose not much rainfall as we head into tuesday. better chance for heavier rain as we head into thursday and friday's forecast. now, your microclimate weather, it's looking pretty different as we head into monday. like i said, those early morning

commuters in the north bay could be seeing a wet road out there, which means please be safe, please drive extra, extra careful on monday morning, especially with all those people heading back to work. 62 degrees. by tuesday partly cloudy skies and those rain chances stick around. wednesday that storm system should be moving out, but we could still be seeing that cloud cover. by thursday that second storm system comes in, and that's what could be spreading that rain further south with better rainfall chances as we head into friday. like i said, saturday there is a slight chance that some moisture could still linger in the area. now, inland sunday, 73 degrees. by monday though tomorrow we're going to say in the 70s, so today we're going to top out at 73. rain, we're tracking it through tuesday. wednesday also clearing out. thursday, partly cloudy skies will remain in the forecast for the majority of the week. if you didn't get a chance to enjoy the outdoors yesterday, make sure to head out today and really enjoy that sunshine because it's going to be a wet week ahead. i'll have more coming up in a

of homelessness kns tre is t anyone who has studied the issue of homelessness knows there is no such thing as a typical homeless person. many have families and jobs and some even attend college. that was the case for one san jose student. san jose state student, rather. but his life is now on a completely different path thanks to the kindness of one of his professors. "today in the bay's" garvin thomas has their story in this morning's "bay area proud." >> reporter: brandon says his grandfather and some close friends have been helping him

steer through some tough times lately, but it was a small act from someone he barely knew that is making the biggest difference in his life right now. any student at san jose state university should expect to face some difficult classes along the way. what brandon bebe didn't expect though was having to make such a difficult decision before the school year even started. >> i had so little saved up, do i get a room to stay or do i pay tuition? >> reporter: this all goes back, brandon says, not death of his father earlier this year. brandon had to shift his attention and his finances to helping take care of his family. still, not going to college was not an option. he had promised his dad. >> his last minutes, i promised him, i'm going to get my degree. >> reporter: which explains why brandon began the semester staying not in a dorm but in the front seat of his 1992 honda

accord. >> i pulled up to a curb and locked the doors, rolled up the windows, pulled a blanket over me and slept. >> basically i'd like you to research -- >> reporter: in spice of his circumstances, brandon's journalism professor lisa fernandez, says he started the year strong but soon was missing classes and failing to turn in homework. >> i was wondering why someone like that wouldn't have turned in two or three assignments. >> reporter: lisa pulled brandon aside one day to check in, just to see how he was doing. it meant a lot to a young man feeling awfully alone. >> at that point that's when i realized, you know, i'm not invisible. there are people who care about me. there are people who notice my hard work, my dedication. >> reporter: which is why when the accord broke down and brandon had to drop out of school, he wrote a note to lisa explaining his situation and thanking her for her kindness. saddened and not knowing what to do next, lisa shared the note with her facebook friends.

up to essentially demonize him. >> lopez's family is suing sonoma county in an ongoing wrongful death suit. okay. santa clara police arrested a man who plowed his car into a popular pizza parlor. the car first struck a hydrant creating this geyser here outside of the restaurant, stuffed pizza. the crash happened early saturday morning at the corner of homestead and wood hands road. it took firefighters a half hour to shut off the water. the driver ran away but police found him a few blocks away near his house. and in redwood city, a similar crash. this one after a police chase. it ended when a suspect driving a stolen car plowed into an appliance store. the crash happened just before 8:00 a.m. yesterday at cg appliance express. the damage to the store is

heartbreaking for thomas aubert. he was part of the crew that built the showroom. >> we spent a lot of time making the showroom really nice, installing the cabinets, the appliances. it busted a water main and the place did flood, so it's a little devastating how much work it's going to take again to bring it back to that standard. >> aubert said officers at the scene said the driver hit the building at 80 miles an hour. police didn't reveal if the suspect was injured or arrested. 25 years ago one of the nation's deadliest fires hit the bay area. we're talking about the oakland hills fire that killed 25 people and destroyed 3,000 homes in the oakland hills in berkeley. for people who survived the fire, the memories are still so fresh. "today in the bay's" joe rosato jr. has more on how the healing and the wounds are still going on. >> so we arrived here in the early evening. and we could smell the smoke before we could actually see the

fire. but i got up on the hill across the way, and i stared into that darkness. there was nothing. >> reporter: peter gray scott has fumo menew mementos of the before the fire. >> here is our house catching fire. this is my daughter holding what's left of our silverware. >> reporter: the day of the oakland hills fire flames marched up scott's neighborhood in the berk wieley hills and la it bare. >> it looked like a bomb had gone off. >> reporter: the family had been away earlier that day. scott's elderly mother, francis gray scott, was home. she was tropical disturbance ap died. scott found her remains. >> when you see something like that and realize what this means to you, all of a sudden you just lose words. >> reporter: scott, who is an architect, was the first to rebuild on the hillside. and though a quarter century has

rolled past, the flames still burn in his mind. >> that fire could have been prevented and once it started, it could have been stopped. >> reporter: the fire exposed the weaknesses of the fire department's response plan. firefighting agencies couldn't radio each other. slow response times allowed the fire to run wild. >> 3,000 homes were lost in the fire, but had that wind not shifted, the damage would have been much greater. >> reporter: in the aftermath, john coughman and some 500 area residents founded the clairemont canyon conservancy. >> we've learned what to do to prevent future fires from occurring. >> reporter: since the fire, berkeley and oakland built new firehouses in the hills. hydrant attachments were standardized along with communication systems, but kaufman says thick woods of

nonnative uk lip teucalyptus an trees still pose a danger. fema granted $5.6 million to east bay agencies to remove the eucalyptus trees but last month the agency withdrew the funds after some homeowners filed a lawsuit. >> it's a question of when. the fuel is here. the winds come every fall. all we need is a match to light it. >> reporter: among those fighting to keep the trees from being cut down is scott. >> there's a misconception that the trees started the fire and spread the fire. neither is true. >> reporter: at the base of the hill sits a garden honoring those who lost their lives, including scott's mother, and though it has been 25 years since the flames, for some the ashes of that day still smolder. joe rosato, jr. -- >> it feels like yesterday. >> reporter: -- nbc bay area news. it's the latest massive

foundation of silinalley honored the "cervans" family recathey're called the famif the year. the hispanic foundation of silicon valley honored the cervantes family at the foundation ball in san jose. organizers say all four family members are active volunteers that help immigrants become u.s. citizens. the president of the foundation says everyone can learn from their contributions. >> basic criteria for this award -- basic criteria for this award is find a family who is giving back to the community, and this family, all four of them, the husband, the wife, and the two sons are examples of

san jose 72 today. livermore 74. in terms of temperatures, not a big change. hour-by-hour forecast, i want to show that tracking of that pacific storm system that should be moving in as early as tonight. but more than likely by sunday at about 4:30, clouds are going to start rolling in from the north. fast forward to about 12:30, 1:30, of:00 a.6:00 a.m., that's we'll see the cloud cover. and the majority of the rain will stick to the north bay. the early morning commuters, make sure to take some extra time. leave a little bit early just in case. you never know. we're going to be cooling off. more clouds overnight. north bay, some rain. it's going to be pretty nice overall. san jose 73 degrees. cupertino, 74. san mateo in the 60s. near the north bay we'll remain in the lower -- or upper 60s,

lower 60s for the coast. so we're not going to see a lot of fog today. it's going to be mostly clear for the most part. pleasanton, 74 degrees, and looking ahead at our future cast, like i said, today we'll be mostly clear. not a lot of cloud cover. by monday at about 7:30 a.m., the north bay is going to start seeing some of that drizzle. heavier rain moving through the region, through the south. by monday at about 7:00, san francisco could start seeing some rain, and late into monday night into tuesday it's going to be widespread. now, widespread by thursday. right now the mod 'ems aels aref conflicting, but it's looking like our best chance to be widespread through it's entire bay area will come in on thursday with the arrival of that second storm system coming in from the pacific as well. now, estimated rain totals right now the models are also conflicting in terms of how much rain we're expected to get, but i can say this. the majority of that rainfall as we head into monday and tuesday is going to stick in the north

bay. so we could be seeing about a half inch, maybe a foot by friday with the arrival of that second storm system. now, in the san francisco area, they could be seeing about half an inch by tuesday night. maybe barely a quarter of an inch in the south bay by tuesday night. we could see an increase though with the arrival of that second storm system, so we are going to have not one chance for rain, but two chances for rain as we head into the workweek ahead. overall the next seven days, those temperatures will stay in the 60s. cooler temperatures as we head into month. you might want to grab your umbrella, maybe send the kids off with a jacket, especially if you live out near san francisco, the north bay area. south bay not going to see as much rainfall as we head into wednesday. we should be clearing out quite n'icel nicely. but by wednesday night the second storm system comes in. if the south bay doesn't get much rain on tuesday, it will have a better chance of getting more rain as we head into thursday night. by friday that rain should be

sticking around. saturday looks like those clouds could still be lingering. maybe a slight chance of a few clouds and, of course, some rain, but, overall better chance monday morning for the north bay. >> that's a lot of rain clouds on the calendar. >> a lot of rain clouds. we want to tell you now about a survivor story that has to do with these two cute kittens that were apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time but we're happy to say they're now safe thanks to a brave photographer. took a look at pyro and manny. they barely survived after being trapped by a controlled burn in north dakota. they were living inside a brush pile that was set on fire. carlos was taking photos of that fire when he heard the cats m meowing for help. he used a stick to pull them out. they have some burnt paws. that's why they're wearing those cute booties. carlos is thinking of adopting them now.
