more to the end of the week. >> it's a thursday storm that will have the most rain and wind. it's mainly the wind you have to worry about. mild temperatures. low 60s for the moment. upper 60s to low 70s during the day today. hour by hour, here is what you can expect. mid morning commute, north bay continue to see the rain. lunch time moving south into the peninsula in east bay. by 6:00 and 7:00 beginning to see rain approaching the south bay for the evening commute. the story this morning, those breezy conditions. >> there are advisories from chp from the san mateo highrise so be careful as you're crossing the bay. i don't think it's due to the winds. as we jump into the south bay, 280, we did have a tree down across lanes. good news, caltrans cleared that. remaining activity off the shoulder down 280. northbound, a little commute starting to slowdown north of 680 despite that patch of slowing. about 22 minutes for 101 from

where it splits with 85 to where it joins with 85 in the north. faster for 85 if that's your route. >> thank you, mike. to that horrific bus crash in southern california. early reports suggest the bus was traveling way too fast when it slammed in the back of a semi truck. this killed 13 people and injured dozens more. the truck slowed down for overnight road work moments before the crash. it happened on interstate 10 yesterday early morning near palm springs. the bus was wedged 15 feet into that semi. the bus was headed back to los angeles after a trip to the casino. many of the passengers onboard were asleep at the time of the crash. they awoke to the sounds of screams and crushing metal. chp says this crash is one of the deadliest in state history. >> in almost 35 years, i've never been to a crash where

there's been 13 confirmed fatal victims. it's tough for all of us. >> the bus driver died and the driver of the truck survived with minor injuries. >> as of now, it's unclear if alcohol, drugs or fatigue played a role. we do know that bus was last inspected in april and at that time it had no mechanical issues. >> incredibly tragic. 6:03. police in san jose are on the hunt for two men behind a deadly shooting early yesterday morning about 6:30 in the morning. outside a home near king road where two people, a man and woman, were in their driveway when 32-year-old laura garcia was shot and killed. her brother-in-law suffered nonlife threatening injuries. the shooting started out as an argument but they have not indicated a motive yet. at least one of the gunman yelled a gang slogan before firing. the victims aren't connected to any gangs.

this marks san jose's 40th homicide far outpacing last year when san jose was at 30. on the peninsula, a crime in a normally peaceful part of the bay area burlingame police are investigating that city's first homicide of the year. it happened early yesterday morning in a hotel parking lot by sfo. pete joins us live from the hyatt regency hotel. >> burlingame pd believe this victim was targeted as he was visiting the hotel. their attention has turned toward finding that suspect. >> it is our belief that the victim was targeted by the shooter and fled the scene immediately. >> police are describing the victim as a bay area resident in his late 20s. they have not identified him at this time. we do know this took place yesterday morning just before 6:00 a.m. when police arrived after reports of gun shots in this area near the hyatt, they found that victim in the sidewalk area

of the hotel driveway injured with an apparent gun shot wound where he died on the scene. for folks visiting the hotel this shooting in a safe area of town came as quite a surprise. >> something going on in the walkway out there. then next thing you know you heard there was a shooting. >> there was a tattoo convention at the time but it doesn't appear to be any connection to the shooting. they don't have a description of the suspect. if you have any information, contact burlingame police. live in burlingame. >> thank you very much, pete. 6:05 this morning, missing child alert right now in sonoma county. the sheriff's office says 7-month-old henry massey was reported in danger and missing about 8:30 yesterday morning. the sheriff's office says henry is believed to be with his mother hanna ashley. both pictures are shown on the screen.

they are traveling in a silver 2005 subaru forrester. thousands of california national guardsmen are extremely angry right now. they are being ordered to repay thousands of dollars they thought they once earned. years ago the national guard gave soldiers bonuses for reenlisting. that was meant for soldiers performing high demand assignments. in 2010 federal investigators found many of the bonuses were given out to people who didn't qualify for them. many of those folks were here in california. a former guardsman who earned a purple heart in combat now has to repay $46,000 in bonuses and student loan money. >> was awful. it's gut wrenching. you look at that and think it's a joke. you're angry and frustrated. and in denial. you're not sure what's going on. >>ç some former guardsmen had

wages garnished just to pay that money back. the national guard says because taxpayer money once covered the bonuses, they have to recollect it. a class action lawsuit has been filed. a mysterious death at sea. the u.s. navy confirms a pittsburgh woman died onboard a u.s. ship near japan. her family says they are left with a lot of unanswered questions. 23-year-old danielle lucky recently joined the navy. lucky's family tells us they told them their daughter died of cardiac arrest. their daughter has no history of medical problems, but she had been texting her parents she didn't feel well the week before. at 6:07, some victims rights groups released a report suggesting bay area colleges are not doing enough to alert about on campus sex crimes.

in 2015, schools issued alerts less than 20% of the time. critics suggest alerts tend to be the exception rather than the rule. school police agencies defending themselves saga letters are not necessary or even appropriate. that is especially true when there is no imminent threat or victims come forward long after the incident. some victims rights groups believe a new report suggest bay area colleges are not doing enough to alert about on campus sex crimes. a follow-up on a story we told you about friday morning. there are new rules in place after greek leaders at uc berkeley suspended all fraternity and sorority parties on campus after two more reported sexual assaults off campus. the interfraternity council announced all greek houses need to have a consent discussion and hard alcohol is banned. on top of that, they are required to post signs on their front doors and have three people remain sober at parties. another meeting is set to decide

how long to keep the party suspension in effect. turning to the weather. live look outside at san rafael and san francisco this morning. rain is on the way. we are talking a series of storms that will be moving. in actually just starts in a matter of hours. let's check in with rob. >> starting in the north bay, we'll see the rain spilling. in mild temperatures, 50s and 60s out there. it is breezy this morning. south winds at times up to 25 miles per hour on the bay area. we'll watch that rain starting off the north bay before lunch time. by mid afternoon, trying to cross the peninsula to parts of the east bay. will probably hold off until about 6:00 or 7:00. you see the rain moving into the south bay. today we are going to see mild temperatures mid 60s, san francisco. rain closer to 70. stronger storm due in on thursday. a closer look at that. what's happening, your typical pattern. that's great news as far as your commute goes.

next week but not without controversy. britney's husband claims her mother has no right to pen the book. you can hear more on this interview with britney's mother deborah on "today" at 7:00 a.m. niners haven't been winning much on the field this season, but they are hoping to win a dispute with santa clara. city leaders are going to huddle up to discuss an ongoing dispute over money the city believes the team owes. santa clara is seeking a rent increase but they say the city is asking for more than they are entitled to. in may the team filed for arbitration. they are holding a closed door settlement to discuss a settlement or legal action. many low wage earners, the idea of retirement is nothing more than a dream that will never be realized. 1/3 of low wage workers believe retirement will never be a realistic option. among those people, minority

women are the ones who most commonly see themselves working forever. nonpartisan report found women are 80% more likely than men to be living in poverty during retirement age. hot topic this weekend was the mega merger, at&t's $85 billion deal for time warner, which could have major impacts on consumers. that merger, if approved, could take at least a year to complete but would lead to more entertainment offerings from hbo, tnt, tbs and other channels. the concern is less competition would mean higher prices. some telecommunications experts say it could improve prices as at&t is going to be a supplier of content. good news for people hitting the road. gas prices finally falling after a two-month speak. according to the lundberg report, the pump price dropped nearly 4 cents. in the bay area, san jose gas

bridge bike path opened this weekend to connect the 4.5 mile pass from emeryville to a new end point on the island. it will be open 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. demolition continues on the old bay bridge. hundreds were eager to give it a test run. >> it's really a celebration ride. this is the first time we can ride across all the way and enjoy it. >> i see a lot of people waiting for this day. you could not have asked for a better weather to actually open this pass. this is a great day for caltrans, a great day for the biking community. >> it was a gorgeous weekend. there's no parking near the l d landing so caltrans is offering a free shuttle every 30 minutes. get the bike ready. >> i think we said 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., when you're backed up

6:00 right toward the second half of the evening commute where the rain moves into the south bay. you see the rain in south bay. we are not expecting much around the santa clara valley. hills in the north bay with this storm number one. thursday a different story. we can see highs in the low 70s. mid 60s for san francisco. mid 60s most of the north bay and 70s across water creek towards livermore. here is the set up for the second storm thursday which is tapping into tropical moisture sent toward california. so that will likely bring up higher rain totals as you get into thursday, probably into friday. saturday, a brief break. more rain due in on sunday. your first check of your halloween forecast looks pretty good. we will hopefully see that break. in the meantime off and on to the week, weather system number one coming in later today. wednesday a break. thursday into friday. the strongest of the three storms. then sunday more rain to wrap up

toward the evening commute looks like that rain will make an impact across the south bay. >> allow extra time. over here we are tracking a trailer that may be an issue for folks traveling westbound 580. we do have that trailer report detached from the car pulling it. the other vehicle a few hundred yards away. looking at a slower drive. that's a maybe. the rest is a typical slowing for 680 and 880. pushing west. your travel time throughout the south bay, 26 and 29 minutes respectively. we are expecting an update at some point this morning on the investigation into this gruesome crash that happened

over the weekend in southern california just outside of palm springs. it is one of the deadliest in state history. at least 13 people were killed. 31 were injured. that includes five people critically. earlier reports point to speed as a possible factor. here is the latest on the investigation. >> we still don't have the victims' names officially confirmed. the riverside county coroner's office tells us 10 of the 13 killed are men, three are women. the survivors onboard told investigators that almost all the passengers were asleep on the charter bus when it collided with a semi truck yesterday at about 5:17. chp telling us the bus was coming from a nearby casino. investigators say the semi truck driver was traveling at about five miles per hour in traffic when the charter bus traveling at a significant speed,

according to officials, collided with a trailer from behind. the semi truck trailer entered 15 feet into the bus along the i-10 west of indian canyon road here in desert hot springs. 13 people on the bus died including the bus driver. 31 were injured. four patients this morning are in critical condition. that semi truck driver walked away with only minor injuries. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. you can see the i-10 reopened in both directions this morning. the ntsb is sending out a team of investigators to come out and investigate. we'll keep you posted. back to you. >> thank you very much. it is 6:33. crime in a normally peaceful part of the bay area. burlingame police investigating the first homicide of the year. the shooting happened early sunday morning at the hyatt

saturday afternoon. that car is a silver pontiac grand prix. investigators say there appears to be damage to the hood and windshield. as far as they can tell, the driver is a white man wearing an orange t-shirt. san francisco police say a security guard may have scared away three armed men about to rob a mall, two holding clown masks outside the west field shopping center on market street. a guard approached the men. all three men ran from the scene. the masks were reportedly the creepy clown variety. if you want a say in election day, today is the last one to register to vote in the state of california. >> bob redell in san jose. good morning. this is it. people got to get their names in. >> this is the day for those

procrastinators. you have less than 24 hours to register to vote in the state of california. you can register online or you can come here to your local election office. pick up the paper forms. according to the california secretary of state, a record 18.2 million californians have registered to vote. that's about a million more than 2012. that 18 million represents about 3/4 of those who are eligible to vote. last week county leaders reassured the public that the elections won't be rigged as republican candidate donald trump has suggested. they showed us the machines that score the ballot and special scanner that makes sure the signatures match the signature on the voter rolls. there is concern about voter intimidation at the polls. the county doesn't expect that to happen but does promise to staff with plenty of workers.

outside this morning, the not so calm before the storm. gusty conditions around the bay area winds 20 to 30 miles per hour as we await this next round of rain dropping into the north bay. how much rain you can expect coming up. we are looking at travel times. looking at a pleasant but slower drive to the upper east shore. 32 minutes heading to the bay bridge. 280, 15 minutes from 101 to 85. this morning, california is mourning the loss of tom hayden, a long time state law maker and political activist. hayden was part of the chicago 8 which organized an anti-vietnam war protest that turned violent in chicago in 1968. the convictions were later overturned. hayden served in the california

state let year more than two decades. 6:45. a warning for parents and children in san carlos. two 11-year-old girls say a man approached them and asked to buy their scooters. they rode away but the man came back asking if they wanted to have fun. the man is white in his 50s with gray hair and blue eyes, average build wearing a green shirt and blue pants. 6:46. an rv on fire in the delaware bridge is getting extra attention because things smelled funny. the rv was packed with candies made from marijuana. the rv is a promotional vehicle for weed world candies. luckily no one was hurt and no word on what caused that fire. gone but not forgotten. people in santa rosa are remembering andy lopez, the teenager who was shot and killed by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy. this happened three years ago.

the community held a vigil to mark the somber anniversary. lopez was carrying a replica toy gun which the deputy mistook for the real thing. he was cleared of wrong doing. protesters say justice has not been served. >> when i look at his story, it's about a child who has been killed by a system that is set up to demonize him. >> lopez' family is suing in an ongoing wrongful death suit. we've seen a growing number of nfl players kneeling during the national anthem. now a performer is joining the protest. she is wearing a black lives matter shirt as she takes a knee to sing the anthem in miami over the weekend. lawrence is performing before a preseason game for the miami

heat. she says she took that opportunity to show black and brown people have the right to respectfully protest. a south side family being honored with title of family of the year. it was at the annual 27th ball held over the weekend. all four family members are active volunteers that help immigrants become u.s. citizens. the president of the foundation said everyone could learn from their contribution. >> finding a family giving back to the community. all four of them, their husband, wife and two sons are examples of that community leadership. >> 6:48, a group of students at discovery charter school in san jose working hard to bring an anne frank holocaust traveling

south of the golden gate bridge. for the south bay, probably not until the evening. 6:00 or 7:00 before we see the rain come in. we are not expecting a lot of rain, unfortunately, especially around san jose. misting out with higher rain totals around the coastal hill top. we'll see those numbers above 1/2 inch of rain. temperatures today near 70. 60 in san francisco and peninsula. north bay seeing mid 60s for highs and close to 70 around the tri-valley. we'll talk about the second storm which we think will bring more rain. it will trap tropical moisture two or three times the amount of available moisture today's storm has. thursday into friday plan on widespread and heavier rain. a break saturday and into sunday, round three. halloween forecast four, we are going to expect clearing skies approaching next monday. off and on rain for the week. strongest storm on thursday with more wind. you'll see that thursday into friday. plan on a third system arriving the second half of the weekend.

are on the scene trying to figure out exactly what happened that killed 13 people and left several others waking up in area hospitals like this this morning. coming up on the "today" show, the latest on those victims, updates, clues where investigators have and where their investigation goes from here. back to you. >> thank you. at 6:58, police in san jose on the hunt for two men behind a deadly double shooting. it happened last night outside a home near king road. 32-year-old laura garcia died in the shooting. her brother-in-law suffered nonlife threatening injuries. the shooting started as an argument. it is the 40th homicide of the year. there were 30 of all of last year. i believe that happened on saturday night. decision 2016 right now, in just 16 days, people across the country will head to the polls to choose the next president of the united states. if you plan to vote come election day, today marks an important deadline. it is the last day californians can register to vote.
