your morning commute. tri-valley, 46. 45 currently at fairfax in the north bay. so highs once we get rid of the cool start, 60s to low 70s. patchy fog, mostly sun nye skies. dry weather for wednesday. mike? >> patchy fog showing up on the road weather index in the north bay. no problems reported by chp. we'll track that for the morning commute. reports of a big rig on the shoulder. sounds like it might have lost a tire. they are in lanes southbound 880. we'll watch this until chp arrives on scene. also no delays reported. b.a.r.t. reports 14 trains on time. they did have a fire there. we'll follow up with bob in about a minute. >> thank you very much, mike. breaking news this morning in iowa. a story changing by the minute. two officers from two different

departments killed overnight in ambush-style attacks. right,000 the search is on for the killer. a news conference was held within the last hour. the des moines police department said the shootings happened about midnight central time when officers responded to reports of shots fired. they found an urban dale police officer that had been shot while sitting in his car. another officer shot in his car blocks away. both officers are dead. a police spokesperson says there is clearly danger right now for all officers in the area. >> in all appearances it looks just like that, that these officers were ambushed. on the surface right now -- we're just a few hours into this, it doesn't look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is that shot them while they sat in their cars. >> no arrests have been made.

we're learning one of the school districts there is closed today. we'll corporate to update you on this developing story every 30 minut minutes. some scary moments on b.a.r.t. after an electrical explosion leads to delays overnight. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live in millbrae with more on what happened and if it will impact your morning commute. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. a b.a.r.t. spokesperson tells us this morning that last night's electrical explosion in san francisco fortunately will not affect this morning's commute. just before midnight last night there was a minor explosion on the third rail at the montgomery street station in sf which resulted in a small fire and damaged a b.a.r.t. train as it passed over the location. no one on board the train was hurt. the fire department extinguished the small fire. b.a.r.t. had to shut down the montgomery street station until the smoke cleared. >> all of a sudden there was smoke. okay.

we should get out. i knew it was going to take a long time. >> reporter: that one train damaged by the explosion has been taken out of service. b.a.r.t. hasn't indicated what caused the minor explosion. to reiterate, b.a.r.t. says service has returned to normal and what happened last night will not impact your morning commute. live in millbrae b.a.r.t. station, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. a troubling crime to report now at one of the bay area's most popular downtown strips. a woman pepper sprayed and the jewelry she was wearing torn right off her body. this attack happened near busy university avenue. police say the woman was robbed by two men who ripped hess necklace and earrings right off her person. many people in the area say they're scared to walk down the

street. >> it's very sad being a female that you're more susceptible to people coming after you than if you were a male. >> this happened right off university avenue. police say so far there's no surveillance video of the incident because the victim was blinded by pepper spray, they have no description of any suspects. now a developing story in san francisco. the police commission has chosen its three finalists nor police chief. the commission will hand the list over to mayor ed lee this morning. a source confirms to nbc bay area that toney chaplin and deputy chief denise schmitt are on the list. they haven't had a permanent chief since greg suhr be signed in may. the facility on san francisco streets is growing. a new city report says complaints about needles and other ex-kremt are up from last

highway 4 to the maze, 14 minutes. that's a great drive, a rare thing in the morning. in the tri-valley, 23 minutes, already seeing the slowdown out of the altamont. through the heart of livermore, no delays. you're at speed. new clues into the final moments of malaysia airlines flight 370 which plunged into the indian ocean in march of 2014. australian investigators have issued new findings based on their analysis of recovered wing flap debris. it suggests the plane was driving with no one at the controls. previous theories claim the plane could have glided to a crash. vta will break ground on tunnel to improve access to a busy caltran station. crews will build a bike and pedestrian tunnel. it will provide safe passage under three railroad tracks and a new ramp will link brokaw to

==miketraffic set== we're probably still about an hour or so away from the coolest temperatures of the morning. we continue sunrise now at 7:37 in the morning, this time of year a late sunrise. 53 right now, right near the water in san francisco, san jose at 50 degrees, mostly clear skies, pretty picture there. you can see from belvedere back to san francisco, 48 degrees. a little patchy fog. we'll be seeing some of that this morning around napa and santa rosa. visibility has dropped off to ability a mile, but improved slightly. the radar clearly has dried out and you can see a big storm out

here to the west packing a lot of wind offshore. that is pushing a swell of 10 to 15 feet. once it hits the coastline, we'll see wave heights we think thursday to friday, breakers up to 20 feet plus. use caution there at the coast. as our temperatures warm up, you may be tempted to head out to the coastline. as you can see in our microclimate forecast, low 70s, south bay some of the warmest we'll see in the bay area. as you head into solano and contra cass sta counties, 72 around livermore. san francisco, cool start. should see numbers in the up pest 60s and upper 60s from know vat dough and trending warmer thursday and friday. high pressure keeping the rain off to the north. one chance for seeing showers late saturday into early sunday. but notice the rain projection here. a lot of that now is in the north bay. in fact, areas south of san francisco likely won't see anything. as you see in the rain estimate

coming into the weekend, light rain, less than .10 inch expected there very efficiently on sunday. a dseven-day forecast. may get close to 80 degrees on friday. then clouds and cooling as we head through the weekend. rob? >> looking over here. roadways are very calm right now for the most part. the tri-valley a couple of problems. the first was southbound 680 at stoneridge. the tire wedged under the car, this one at el char row is eastbound. counter whatever morning commute there is right now. not much of one through livermore, the slowing out of the altamont pass very mild. it does add to our travel times for westbound 580. now 28 minutes. that's five minutes longer than at the beginning of the show. from grant line road, all the way to greenville, things open up. fine towards 680 and the dublin interchange. a smooth flow up the roadway.

speelking of uber, an uber driver is under arrest this morning accused of sexual assault and stalking. palo alto police say this man picked up a woman and her husband over the weekend and took them home. shortly after the woman called him saying she left her phone in his car. when she went outside to get it, chef said the man suddenly kissed and groped her. an hour later he called her saying he was outside their home. she called police who tracked the driver to his home and arrested him. thousands of unsafe cars may be still on california roadways, more fallout over the potentially deadly tack cat that air bag deflators. the recall affects certain 2001 through 2003 hondas and acuras. the dmv says there's a lot of them, especially in the south bay. to see if your car is affected, we have the complete list.

let's take a live look outside. golden gate bridge this morning, certainly a cool start to our morning, but it should be a nice finish. looks like they're setting up the traffic lanes out there. we'll check in a bit with mike. no more pot smoke in san jose. a new ordinance prevents recreational marijuana use. the san jose city council ju unanimously adopted the use yesterday, non-medical marijuana cannot be -- it allows the city to reach out to the community and hold public hearings on whether to allow recreational use if most voters say yes to proposition 64. retail gun stores are the focus of thieves dealing with stolen firearms. >> senior investigative reporter stephen stock has this report. >> according to the fbi, more than 2 million guns were stolen nationwide in the last ten years.

as we first reported a year ago, police and civilian gun owners are often targets. we found another group whose been targeted more recently here in california, gun stores. this security camera footage shows exactly what federal agents call a gang of gun thieves intent on stealing as many guns as they can get from an armory in rockland outside sacramento. this footage was taken back in july. within three months five different gun stores in area were hit around the sacramento area. in fact, at least 240 guns in all were stolen. rockland police tell us the young men seen in this surveillance video are all juveniles and face various local charges. we also discovered that the number of retail gun store thefts have gone up in california over the last three years. federal atf agents say part of the problem is stores don't lock up their merchandise. this store took extra
