week, of course we had halloween. the scary thing this morning is the fact the temperatures have dipped. >> one of our burr months, november. low to mid 40s around the north bay valley. chilly, clear skies, a little patchy fog which mike is tracking. in the north bay, around fairfax, 45 degrees. oakland 50 this morning, right near the water's edge. as we head through the afternoon, 70 in oakland, not too bad after the chilly start. 67 with mostly sunny skies today around san francisco. the roadways are moving smoothly. as we move to the north bay, the orange highlighting talks about whether there might be fog registering the road weather index. that's novato and areas north. keep that in mind as you drive through the area. grant line road over towards 680 a little slowing. a crash at grant line road.

a little slower at vallecitos. breaking news in iowa on a story changing by the minute. here is what we know right now. two police officers from two different departments were killed overnight in ambush-style attacks. right now the search is on for the killer. a news conference was held earlier this morning of a des moines police department says the shootings happened about midnight. that's when officers responded to a report of shots fired. when they got on scene, they found an urban dale police officer who had been shot while sitting in his squad car. about 20 minutes later, an officer from a different department, this from from des moines, also found shot in his patrol car just blocks away. both of those police officers have died. at a news conference, a police spokesperson says there's, quote, clearly danger right now for officers in that area. >> we or just a few hours into this. it doesn't look like there was

any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is that shot them while they sat in their cars. that's the best we've got that we can explain right now. both of them were in their cars. >> still absorbing the gravity of this news. so far no arrests have been made. also we're just learning that one of the local school districts there is closed for the day. we're going to stay on top of this as it develops throughout the course of the morning. stay with nbc bay area for the latest coverage or download our free app for instant updates. b.a.r.t. expects service to be on time this morning after a rail problem late last night damaged a train car. b.a.r.t. says electrical arcing on the third rail damaged a train approaching montgomery street station in san francisco, sending smoke onto the platform. b.a.r.t. ended up closing that station. riders were forced to get out ot the embarcadero station. no delays expected this morning. we'll continue to month it for

you. a developing story comes down to three, the san francisco police chigs has chosen its finalists for chief. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live at san francisco city hall this morning -- at least we thought he was going to be there. wait, there you are again. pete, thanks for joining us this morning. we know the commission is expected to hand that list over to the mayor sometime this morning. it will be interesting to see who's on it. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the mayor will be giving that list shortly. while the commission is keeping this list confidential, sources tell nbc bay area that the current interim chief, toney chaplin, is on that short list. chap lynn stepped in when the then police chief resigned back in may after the high profile officer-involved shootings. this new chief will have to deal with a couple of big ticket items. one of the more notable ones dealing with implementing use of

force reforms. shear the president of the san francisco police commission talking about the process. she says it started out with more than 60 candidates. >> i can say the guiding principle the commission had was passing on people who are highly qualified, with the doj report, everything facing the department to meet the challenge and deliver for the community and the department. the department of justice report she's referring to came out less than a month ago claiming that the police department used force against african-americans more than any other krashl group, mott to mention african-americans were pulled over at a disproportionately higher group. the list will be handed over to mayor lee for a final decision. if he's not satisfied, they'll have to start the process all over again. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." happening later today, two men accused of beating a disabled homeless man to death will be ar raped today.

a warning now that some of the video you're about to see is graphic. 67-year-old tie lamb was kicked to death almost two years ago as he was sleeping in the financial district. this is surveillance video of the attack. officers called it one of the most brutal killings that they had ever seen. earlier this week joseph stull and david peters were arrested. authorities are upping the reward to find a man of shooting and nearly killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend. authorities say 26-year-old tried to abduct his ex-girlfriend from her job at a senior housing complex. instead, he ended up shooting her in the head. she and her unborn baby both survived. u.s. marshals are offering a $10,000 reward for information

leading to his arrest. hillsborough police are investigating two home burglary attempts, both within a few minutes of each other about a mile apart. in both cases someone forced open the home's front doors but got scared off by alarms before stealing anything. laura, we have new details this morning about the five-alarm construction fire we covered on "today in the bay" at a construction site in oakland. we've uncovered some legal troubles facing the owners of the property. federal agents with alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosiveless agency are arriving there today and they're going to investigate the fire that burned down the majority of an unfinished apartment complex by lake merritt. we learned tenants find a lawsuit in 2015. tenants say their building was uninhabitable and unsafe. they say when they complained to the city, al del foes started to demolish that property while they were still living there. strange flyers criticized

for being anti-semitic are showing up again outside a b.a.r.t. station, this time in walnut creek. more than 500 riders returned to their cars to find this flier. the wording doesn't make sense to most. but there are references to race wars along with the star of david on one side. people also found flyers at a lafayette b.a.r.t. station in late september. >> it's plenty of bad words, of course. so i absolutely have no idea. it's very strange to me. >> walnut creek police say they know who did this. they tracked him down and found there were no threats on the flyers so the man is not facing any charges. 'tis the season, how many times will you hear that in the next few weeks. >> hopefully not. lays up your skates, a holiday tradition returning to san francisco. the ice rink at union square is later this morning opening, the season opening ceremony is taking place. the rink closes in mid january. so lace up the skates and get

ready to skate. not the only holiday ice rink opening, the rink at justin herman plez sa is opening up until january 8th. at least it's cold enough this morning. at 5:08 this wednesday morning, we're saving on the power bills for the ice rink opening around the bay area. we've got low 40s into the north bay. san francisco actually the warmest spot. it's 52 degrees with clear skies. patchy fog as we head into marin county and napa county. high 60s to low 70s, san jose 72 degrees. 67 at san francisco and about 69 in walnut creek. for the weekend, expect more clouds after the rest of the week warmup puts san francisco into the low 70s by friday. inland spots 70 to near 80. we'll see a chance of mainly north bay showers late saturday night into sunday morning. >> rob, right now calm around the south bay has a new crash. we'll zoom in down here towards san jose, southbound 101 at

of her top aide's e-mail. more than a quarter say it makes them less likely to vote toward her. sources say the fbi is nowhere near done and may not have results by election day. with 26 million votes early cast, donald trump is urging democrats to go back and change their votes before election day. >> you live here or in michigan or pennsylvania or minnesota, those four places, you can change your vote to donald trump, we'll make america great again. okay? >> reporter: trump is rolling out $25 million in ads in 13 states, all but one voted for president obama. he's in florida where polls show early voters and support evenly split. clinton campaigns out west in arizona and nevada, rallying female voters. >> don't be exploited.

>> reporter: he's bearing down on baem kaer with less than a week to go to make their case. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. an election day battle is heating up but has nothing to do with the candidates or really the issues. it has to do with first amendment reelgts and your ability to take a selfie when you're casting your ballot. a judge in san francisco later today will hear arguments on a lawsuit filed this week by the aclu that challenges california's ban on ballot selfies. while some states ban ballot selfies, california lawmakers initially did, then passed new legislation to repeal it. the hitch is that repeal ban isn't actually going into effect until january. >> you may have to be happy with an "i voted" sticker. >> we talk a lot about the fact that the bay area economy is humming right now. but the bay area's visa losing more workers. >> kind of unexpected lay-offs.

>> good morning. the san francisco business times says hundreds of jobs are at risk at visa at the foster city headquarters being the center of the lay-offs. visa will only say there will be a variety of cuts. visa has about 4,000 employees here in the bay area. it recently bought visa europe. the cuts may be part of that deal. a new report from the commerce department once again shows manufacturing in the united states increasing while employment, in factory decreases. the reason is robots. more data to support the idea the economy is changing. if you're a factory worker, it's not changing in your favor. we've been talking about brocade looking for a buyer. it found one this morning, broadcom. facebook, investors have high hopes the company stock hit an all-time high. let's check the rest of the news

before the bell with landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning. wall street could trade lower again today. futures are down this morning and stocks fell tuesday with the s&p 500 falling for a sixth straight session as investors corporate to monitor the run-up to the election and wait for news from the federal reserve. the fed is wrapping up its two-day meeting this afternoon and is expected to signal it will raise interest rates next month. you want to look for data today on hiring in the private sector. that data just in, and coming in slightly below estimates. the dow dropping 105 to 18,037, the nasdaq slipping 35 to 5,153. apple is building a new store in downtown chicago. it's going to be one of the biggest apple stores in the united states. big glass windows will look out over the river. for those who know the area, it's just down from the trump building. here is a look at the finished product. sam and laura, we're 53 days

the same time yesterday. that's what's happening right now in the north bay, 52 degrees, san francisco, no fog there. we can show you san jose pretty chilly relatively speaking. friends and relatives on the east coast think we're silly. talking about it being so cold, in the 40s. been seeing 50s and 60s to start the day. this will catch you by surprise as you step outside. 40 degrees in napa, 45 in livermore. 46 along the coast. look at the temperature drop-off, clearing skies, much cooler air around the bay area to start the morning. patchy fog. visibility has dropped to less than a mile in napa. watch out for that this morning. a big storm not going to bring us rain, but it will bring big surf our way. by tomorrow, breakers to 20 feet on the coast thursday into friday, high surf advisory in the forecast. chilly start to the morning, nice rebound and temperatures south of shea will see highs in the low 7s. upper 60s toward concord and

antioch. down the peninsula 69 degrees. palo alto. mid to upper 60s in san francisco. nerkt chance of rain, looks like less of a chance for areas south of san francisco. this will come in early on sunday morning, and the rainfall projection is highest north of san francisco. it looks like less than .10 inch out of this next system. the seven-day forecast will have warmer temperatures through friday. more clouds this upcoming weekend and areas in the north bay will have a chance saturday night into sunday. mostly dry weekend across brare >> in san jose a couple of incidents, no problems on the peninsula and the east bay, pretty standard here. it is southbound 101 at the top of your screen at trimble. we still have crews on scene for the crash southbound 101 at trimble just before highway 87. south 680 looks like it's clear

cyber shot camera from best buy. he said he used it a handful of times before getting an error message. they told him he couldn't return it because he had just missed the 15-day return period. albert says best buy then told him to take the camera to a sony authorized repair center. he did that. but albert says the repair center wouldn't fix it, citing previous damage to the camera. albert said he had no idea what the damage could be, so he decided to rooech out to us. he's caught in the middle. after we talked to best buy, best buy gave him $270 in store credit to replace that camera. in a statement the company said it found a manufacturing defect with the camera and it was pleased to resolve the matter. if you have a consumer complaint, you can call, the number is 1-888-996-tips, or visit nbcbayarea.com/responds. have a great day. >> thanks very much.

one set a short time from now. the des moines police department says the shooting happened about midnight central time when officers responded to a report of shots fired, they found an urban dale police department officer who had been shot while sitting in his patrol car. about 20 minutes later, an officer from a different department in des moines was shot in his patrol car just a few blocks away. both officers are dead. at a news conference the police spokesperson says there is clearly danger right now for all officers in the area. >> in all appearances it looks just like that, that these officers were ambushed. on the surface right now, like i said, we're just a few hours into this. it doesn't look like there was any interaction between these two officers and whoever the coward is that shot them while they sat in their cars. >> so far no arrests have been made. also one of the school districts there is closed today. we'll continue to update you on this breaking story. new this morning, laura. overnight problems for b.a.r.t.

after an electrical explosion on the tracks. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in millbrae with more on what happened. are things runsing smoothly again, bob? >> they are expected to. a b.a.r.t. spokesperson this morning tells us that last night's minor lex cal explosion in san francisco is not expected to affect this morning's commute. this happened just before midnight last night. there was a minor electrical explosion on the third rail at the montgomery b.a.r.t. station in san francisco which resulted in a small fire. it also damaged a b.a.r.t. train as it passed over that location. no one on the board the train was hurt. everyone did get off okay. the fire department extinguished the fire. b.a.r.t. shut down the montgomery street station until the smoke cleared. >> there was smoke and he was like, okay, we should get out. everyone get out. and i think he knew it was going to take a long time. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. has taken

that damaged train out of service. the transit agency has not indicated what caused that minor explosion on the third rail. to reiterate, b.a.r.t. says service has returned to normal and what happened last night not expected to impact this morning's commute. live in millbrae, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 5:34 this morning. an alarming crime in a popular downtown district. a woman pepper sprayed and violently robbed of her jewelry in palo alto. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez with more on why the search for the suspect is troubling officers. >> reporter: good morning. we want to show you where we are. we show you the map on your screen. this is university avenue. the apple store is right at the intersection, and about half a block behind this block of businesses that the woman was robbed with pepper spray. it was only 7:00 in the evening. it happened on halloween night. the woman was approached by two men, one of whom sprayed her

with pepper spray in the first and while she was temporarily bliepded, the other ripped the necklace from her neck and ripped her hoop earrings out of her ears. police say they may not know who the suspects are unless somebody else comes forward. >> i always park down random streets, right? it is a little frightening. >> because of the pepper spray that was in her eyes, he was unable to give us a better description. >> reporter: because this happened in the alleyway behind the businesses, so far it does not appear that police have any surveillance video to work with. if you know anything, make sure you give them a call. in a meantime, police give the same advice they do when people are victims of crimes, try to stay in well-lit areas and make sure you travel in groups if you can. in palo alto, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> very frightening there, chris.

5:35. the man accused of killing a warehouse worker in the east bay is set to enter a plea in court. 27-year-old kadeem edwards will be arraigned in court. he struck and killed a co-worker as he tried to stop him from stealing wooden pallets. officers found the suspect five hours later after a crash in oak lapd. 5:36. pacifica police made an arrest in a potential kidnapping. investigators say 41-year-old mark s solomon drove up to a young girl and tried to force her into the car. the girl was able to run away. he was arrested and is facing charges of annoying a child. an uber driver is under arrest accused of sexual assault and stalking. palo alto police say pedro liborio anorve picked up a woman and her husband and took them

home. she left her phone in the car. he called her saying he was outside their home. she called police who tracked him to his home and arrested him. no more pot smoke in san jose. a new ordinance prohibits recreational marijuana use ahead of a november election. the san jose city council adopted that ordinance yesterday reaffirming the city's rule that non-medical marijuana can't be manufactured, distributed, tested or sold. it allows the city to rooch out to the community to hold public hearings on whether or not to allow medical marijuana should they approve prop 64 next week. problem 64 does allow individual cities and mps. how much would you spend to up great b.a.r.t.? voters in three bay area

live. the vta this morning will break ground on a new tunnel designed to improve access to a very busy caltran space connecting brokaw rode with the santa clara cal trane station. an 80-foot tunnel will provide safe passage over three railroad tracks. it's a $14 million project expected to be finished by next summer. it's time right now, 5:39, a couple hours away from sunrise. the temperatures outside right now as chilly as they are, may get cooler. 50 degrees in san jose. in the north bay, 43 in napa, 44 in santa rosa. look at the nice temperature recovery we'll see after the patchy fog clears. close to 67 in san francisco and close to 70 in oakland. the rest of the workweek will warm up. those are san francisco temperatures, in the 70s through friday. notice the clouds on the increase through the weekend.

highs approaching the low 70s. >> a look at the times across the bridge. the bay bridge, eight minutes now. doesn't seem like big deal. but starting to creep a little higher for the travel time across the span. the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza, highway 24 at the bottom. the toll plaza is where you'll find the slowing. an lbgt community center in concord has been the victim of repeated burglaries. police are calling it a hate crime. the rainbow community center on willow pass road has been burglarized four times in the past two weeks, burglars stole credit cards and charged up to $10,000 on them. in the latest incident burglars painted homophobic graffiti all over the building. investigators are looking closely at the roadway. 13 people were killed when the tour bus slammed into a truck late last month.

the stretch of road was under construction but the area not marked. documents show no lighting or reduced speed limit signs that were required at the time of the crash. anthem blue cross is being accused this morning of misleading customers, switching them to cheaper plans and charging more money. consumer watch dog, an add cassis group has filed a lawsuit. that lawsuit says anthem is switching several hundred thousand customers to strip down en shurns plans and some are paying more for it. anthem says state regulators approved the changes. it's a h 5:45 right now. city attorney dennis herrera announced yesterday the city is dropping its pop situation to a federal lawsuit challenging the state's bail system. herrera calls the system unconstitutional and says it treats poor and wealthy

around the bay area. right now it's 52 degrees in san francisco. that is the warmest temperatures we're seeing outside right now. right around the peninsula, share 50. you can see some patchy clouds this, patchy fog around belvedere, 48 degrees. temperatures outside in the north bay have dropped to 43. check out the coast. clear skies in santa cruz, 45 degrees. 45 in livermore. in the case of the areas in darker blue, napa, the north bay, 15 degrees cooler than yesterday. everybody cooler as the clouds moved on. look out for a little patchy fog. the exception to the rule that we're clear in the north bay, low level clouds, visibility less than a mile right now in santa rosa. big storm offshore, big waves our way. the swell up to 15 feet during the day tomorrow. as the energy arrives on the coast, it slows down, the wave heights begin to creep up as high as 20 feet or higher during the day tomorrow. high surf advisory on thursday.

day, low 70s around the south bay for san jose and tri-valley. 68 in antioch, 68 in concord. mid to upper 60s around the peninsula over to san francisco. far the north bay we'll see highs close to 70 degrees. next chance of rain we think will hold off until late saturday night into early sunday. a slight chance of showers. now it looks like areas to the north of san francisco will see less than .10 inch of rain. that really is the only chance we see in the next seven days. notice the clouds filling in for the weekend. don't plan on a lot of rain. most of that will fall saturday night into sunday. temperatures inland could get close to 80 by friday. >> remember time change on sunday. not a lot of change ton the roadways. in san jose we're tracking the crash, northbound 680 coming off north 101. seeing slowing as the crash clears. there may be a second in the area. we'll take a look at our live camera because we do have one right there, 101 showing the slowing we have on the map,

here in california, gun stores. this security camera footage shows exactly what federal agents call a gang of gun thieves intent on stealing as many guns as they can get from an armory in rockland outside sacramento. this footage was taken back in july. within three months, five different gun stores were hit around the sacramento area. in fact, at least 240 guns in all were stolen. rockland police tell us the young men seen in the surveillance video are all juveniles and face various charges. the number of retail gun store thefts have gone up in california over the last three years. federal atf agents say part of the problem is that stores just don't lock up their merchandise. this store took extra precautions and only one gun was stolen here. after our series of reports first ran a year ago, local state and federal lawmakers introduce new laws requiring gun
