a very good friday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. let's get your friday started off right with a check of the weather. the weather right now still comfortably cool. 40s and 50s outside. get ready for a taste of summer-like temperatures later on. 44 degrees right now in santa rosa. by the afternoon 74 degrees. 78 in san jose, 72 in san francisco, 76 in santa cruz. up and down the coast 70s today. use caution there. we still have the high surf advisory now extended into the afternoon where some of the waves could be approaching 20 feet, some of the larger sets rolling into half moon bay. >> keep that in mind as folks head to the coast. right now, no delays, easy drive. a little slowing for hayward 880 and an issue that might show slowing. disabled vehicle northbound 680 right around stone valley road.

that will be an issue as crews arrive on scene. so far no slowing shows up. no slowing really to speak of other than your typical slowdown from highway 4 to the bay bridge, speeds dipping down around san pablo where there's also overnight road work this weekend both directions closed saturday night into sunday. 6:01. what a family fears most, knowing a family member died tragically. we now know the identity of a body found in a shallow grave on sonoma state's campus. deputies say the 18-year-old is kirk kimberly. now the hunt begins for his killer. his body was found by a landscaper at sonoma state university campus wednesday afternoon. the body was covered in mud. last night students walked around campus, uneasy about the gruesome discovery.

>> you're on a college campus and you want to know that you're safe. so if it is, like, an older 18-year-old, then you would feel that you are a little unsafe in the fact that they could be coming after you. >> it's like an 18-year-old male. i think that would be a little more scary, because that's like all of us here. >> the victim is last seen october 17th leaving cotati to meet a friend at rohnert park. new video of a huge fire burning in san bernardino. here is what we know. it's in a pallet yard. that's a lot of wood on fire and a lot of firefighters responding, 80 in total. at this point we don't have any word on injuries. our sister station in l.a. is on the scene gathering more information. in san jose, a killer is on the loose after a double shooting that left one man dead, another hurt. this happened in the area of bambi lane and peter pan avenues. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from san jose.

the time of day, kris, makes this particularly worrisome. >> reporter: scott, it was just after 6:30 in the evening. you know what a neighborhood is like that time of night, fairly light, kids outside. in this particular neighborhood, capital park is right near the intersection of bambi lane and peter pan avenue where the shooting was reported. so this is a concerning time of day because there were so many people around, out and about in that neighborhood. police say both the victims are men, one died at the scene. the other was rushed to the hospital but will survive those injuries. police have not said whether the victim who survived was able to identify the gunman nor give them a reason for the shooting. the victim who died has not been identified or the identity has not been released. we can tell you that he is now the city's 41st homicide victim this year. this time last year there were 30 feet who were killed at the hands of another perp. if you know anything about this crime, you can report it to the

police anonymously. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." at 6:03 this morning. today the contra costa county d.a. will reveal resultion of an investigation into the police sexual misconduct scandal rocking the east bay. the district attorney has been reviewing information related to the alleged sexual abuse by police officers in contra costa county county with self-proclaimed prostitute. the teenager jasmine, who used to go by lel southwest guap, claimed she has sexual relations with dozens of bay area officers, some when she was a minor. several officers face criminal charges, several others have already been fired. an uptick in crime in one of the bay area's most upscale neighborhoods has people on edge. last night people in hillsborough gathered together to voice their concerns. wednesday home surveillance cameras captured this black bmw that sped away from a burglary. that's the third burglary or armed home invasion in

hillsborough and portola valley within the last two weeks. last night the crimes brought police out to answer questions from homeowners. they found no link, but detectives investigating recent burglaries throughout the peninsula says one similarity stands out. >> they're not local. they're traveling because they don't want to be someone -- they don't want to be recognized and they want to come here, commit the crime and go back home. >> meantime locals formed the hillsborough neighborhood network to spread alerts. a bay area nanny accused of abusing the infant she was watching. berkeley police say home surveillance camera caught ingrid perez beating a 6-month-old baby. the police report we obtained says perez is seen on tape slapping, throwing, dragging and forcing that baby into a crib. fortunately police say the baby wasn't hurt. perez was arrested while she was going to another child care job. plenty of questions in oak

lapd. a bizarre gruesome discovery, a woman's burned body found around noon yesterday in a park off bancroft and 77th. so far police have not released any other information. an unusual protest in san francisco. three mothers who children have been killed by police will lead a sit-in at san francisco district attorney george gascon's office t. group justice for mario woods is organizing the protest for noon. happening now, san jose students are waking up this morning after sleeping outside as a way to stand in solidarity with the homeless. student activists held the 11th annual poverty under the stars. city leaders are also taking part. students began gathering at about 7:00 last night setting up their tents. we were there earlier last night when everyone was still asleep. it ends with a breakfast discussion at 9:00 this morning. waves corporate to pound the coastline. right now the coast guard

to the dublin interchange. no major problems. remember, getting out of town about 2:30, opposite direction there. approaching the bay bridge, 22 minutes, mild slowing off highway 4 down to the bay bridge. new this morning, the labor department released its latest monthly unemployment report before the presidential election showing a healthy spike in jobs. 161,000 jobs added in october. that's less than economists expected, but not bad. the unemployment rate dropped .10% to 4.9. hourly pay took a big step higher recording the largest year-over-year increase since 2009. federal prosecutors are close to filing criminal charges against makers of generic drugs possibly by the end of the year. the justice department sent subpoenas. a big recall we want to let you know about this morning

before you throw in a load of laundry. we're just learning samsung is recalling one of its top-load washing machines, noorly 3 million of them. samsung says washing machine top can unexpected come apart while in use which certainly court hurt someone. the recall involves 34 models of the top loader. samsung says it's received more than 700 reports of the washer reporting excessive vibration which could cause the top to fly off. the latest twist involving san francisco's sinking millen yes, ma'am tower may send the case to court. dennis herrera announced a new lawsuit against the tower's developer. he says potential buyers were kept in the dark about issues involving the tower, issues the nbc investigative unit helped uncover. >> buyer beware doesn't cut it here. someone selling real estate must disclose details about known property conditions. the law is very clear on that. >> the tower has sunk more than

a foot since it opened, and it's also now slightly leaning. some condo owners tell us they just want to know that building is safe. a new high school on the peninsula has been approved despite concerns about the location. the "mercury news" says the sequoia union high school district approved the menlo park high school project located in an industrial neighborhood on jefferson drive. the 400-student school will focus on technology and design. critics say it will increase traffic in an area that can't handle it. the school will be open by 2018. even though the weekend is right around the corner for south bay pet lovers, today is already going to the dogs. the reason they're helping renovate the dog park at san jose's selma olinder park. bags filled with doggy swag and dog food products, not to be cues confused with doggy bags, remember those? that event begins at 9:00 a.m.

at 6:31, a teenager's body found in a shallow grave on the campus of sonoma state university. this morning we know who the young man is. "today in the bay's" pete suratos live in roahnert park. >> reporter: good morning, laura. as you can see behind me here at sonoma state, the police tape is still up. the body found in a shallow grave right behind it. they've yiepd fiidentified the r as 18-year-old kirk kimberly from rancho cotati high school. according to the cotati police department he went missing, riding his bike from cotati to meet a friend at rohnert park on october 17, about a ten-minute drive from this area. the remains of his body were first discovered on wednesday by an employee of sonoma state university about 200 yards away

found two men, each shot, one died at the scene. no suspects at this time. but it's san jose's 41st homicide of the year compared to 30 all of last year. sexual misconduct scandal has rocked several bay area police departments. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in marz with hat the contra costa county district attorney koufld say later this morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. taking place during an 11:00 a.m. news conference in martinez. that's when the contra costa county district attorney expected to release the results of his investigation into law enforcement officers who allegedly had inappropriate relationships with or were involved in the abuse of a 19-year-old girl named jasmine. used to go by the name celeste guap. it is possible more officers could face criminal charges. jasmine's mother -- jasmine, whose mother is an opd dispatcher claims she had sex with dozens of officers from

many ageofficers in the east ba sometimes when she was under age. these allegations led to internal investigations by departments including oakland, livermore and sf as well as alameda and contra costa county sheriff's offices. several oakland and richmond police officers have been  displipd. alameda county has charged eight officers from three different agencies with crimes related to this scandal. live in martinez, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. the possible lifeline for a long talked about suicide safety net on the golden gate bridge, a live look at the bridge where estimated costs to construct that safety net have ballooned to $150 million, a far cry from the initial $75 million projection. examiner reports transportation leaders closed one-third of what's a $120 million funding gap. transportation leaders plan to meet next week. authorities are looking for a young police volunteer who disappeared.

21-year-old carlo ramirez is a police explorer with the alameda county sheriff's office. deputies say she was seen in san leandro, dropped off a friend, but her car was found in an area in hayward, she's five feet tall and 160 pounds. two suspected copper thieves are in custody this morning. police in palo alto arrested two men sunday at a vak can't commercial building on hanover street. officers say the pair, a man and his nephew, two found with burglary gear and wire cutters. investigators later condition nexted them to two copper wire thefts next month. fears of what could happen on election day and even before election day mounting as we enter the last leg of the presidential campaign. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts live in washington, d.c. with how the u.s. government is preparing and who the candidates are targeting in these last few days. good morning, tracie.

>> reporter: good morning everyone. the candidates are targeting different groups, donald trump, democrats in pennsylvania, hillary clinton, latinos in arizona, a red state she'd like to pick up. the government is concerned about hackers possibly targeting your right to vote. intelligence sources tell nbc your vote is safe, but they're preparing for possible hacks affecting electricity, the internet, social media and transportation next tuesday. for now, the concern is african-american voters in swing states. >> couldn't find the vote at all. >> you just voted? >> just vouted in the primary. >> reporter: donald trump and extremists supporting him have called for monitors at the polls. hillary clinton calls that intimidation. >> the best way to repudiate the bigotry and blustering and hateful rhetoric and discrimination is to show up with the biggest turnout in american history. >> reporter: polls show trump

ahead in arizona and texas, but a statistical tie in georgia. team clinton thinks north carolina is a firewall that trump needs to win. president obama campaigns there today. trump's wife melania campaigned solo for the first time. >> we have to find a better way to talk to each other, to respect each other. >> reporter: the fbi continues to examine 650,000 e-mail linked to clinton's top aide. >> how can there be duplicates when 650,000 is even more than all of them that are missing? >> reporter: still no word on when the fbi will complete its review. but we do know the state department released e-mails they were given from the fbi last summer related to the clinton investigation. those e-mails they say, about one in five of them were duplicates. >> tracie potts live from washington. we'll talk to you next week. 6:38. firefighters conducting a

controlled burn in a popular south bay park. starting at 9:00 inside joseph grant park right below mt. hamilton. the burn will cover a 200 acre area and smoke should be visible by 5:00 p.m. good news about our drought. all the rain we've been getting is actually doing pretity well for us. nearly a quarter of california is now out of the drought. u.s. drought monitor report says these are the best conditions since 2013. water officials say october's rainfall would triple the normal amount in northern california. >> at 6:39. we'll show you the area that improved dramatically. that was the north coast. you can see in white now, no drought or abnormally dry. bay area conditions improving from severe to extreme to abnormally dry there from san francisco into the north bay. notice the south bay santa cruz mountains still seeing drought conditions. today, upper 70s around san

jose, high of 78. 72 in san francisco, 75 in oakland, 76 today around santa cruz. we will have a chance of rain this weekend, but a weak one at that. in the north bay late tomorrow, early morning showers on sunday and clearing by mid morning and a dry finish to the weekend. mike. >> it's a friday so we have that later build for the commute. peninsula not seeing any slowing, just moving slowly over the dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge. the south bay we'll talk about in a second. i wanted to get this crash in the books as well. eastbound 580 around 106, closer to golf links, a car hit debris and spun out. it's blocking your right two lanes. crews are still arriving. we don't see any slowing there. we do see slowing in the south bay. look at 101 from where it splits with 85 up to 87, heading toward the airport, a 20-minute drive, speeds at 55-mile-per-hour mark for the most part. slowing north 87 for guadalupe

to reduce the charges against him but the judge said no. thompson admits to assaulting mayor kevin johnson back in september. he said he did it to highlight the homeless problem. chef michael chiarello was arrested less than three miles from his restaurant in the heart of wine country. the chp also says chiarello had a controlled substance with him. more than $50,000 worth of fake makeup. san jose woman had them imported from asia, planning on selling them locally. she's been arrested. investigators say fake makeup is easy to sell in the u.s. because of off-brand beauty products are not subject to strict quality controls like legitimate brands are. berkeley city leaders are celebrating a major victory. for three years the berkeley patients group has been fighting the federal government's attempt to shut it down, but a judge dismissed the case this week.

>> talking about today, looking at patchy fog in parts of the north bay this morning. by the afternoon we'll see temperatures climb by as much as 30 to maybe almost 40 degrees with warming right now. 44 degrees in santa rosa, 49 degrees in napa. into concord, 52 currently in san jose. watch out at least for the next couple hours for patchy fog. santa rosa visibility about a half miles at times. pour the afternoon, mid to upper 70s in san jose. may get close to 80 around san martin into gilroy. los gatos, 79 degrees there. let's take a look at the forecast as we head to the tri-valley. numbers in the mid to upper 70s around pleasanton. over in the peninsula, highs in the low 70s, belmont into palo alto. san francisco into the low 70s, more 70s in the north bay. low to mid 70s from napa to
