together. thank you all very much. right now, at 8:00, tense moments at a donald trump rally in reno. the republican presidential candidate rushed offstage by secret service agents. the news starts right now. good evening, everyone. thank you for joining us in a special primetime edition of nbc bay area news. >> donald trump was in the middle of a last-minute pitch to voters here when a scuffle in the crowd forced secret service to jump into action. >> the countdown to the election. let's start with mary ann favro. >> we have just learned that one man who was at that rally has been detained. take a look at this video. you can see s.w.a.t. team members walking through the crowd, leading the way, and

authorities are escorting a man in handcuffs out of the convention center amid boos from the crowd. the last few minutes, secret service agents have said that someone in that crowd yelled, someone has a gun. however, they did not find a gun in the convention center. trump is alive, but there were definitely some chaotic moments onstage during today's rally in reno. 20 minutes into his campaign speech in reno, secret service agents rushed in, and quickly escorted donald trump offstage. there was apparently a scuffle in the crowd close to the front of the stage where trump was standing. a few minutes later, someone was escorted out of the rally. then less than ten minutes later, trump returned to the stage. >> nobody said it was going to be easy for us. but we will never be stopped. never, ever be stopped.

pennsylvania with pop star katy perry. and trump now heads to his final rally today in colorado. no word yet on whether they're going to need to beef up security at that event. reporting live in san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> long lines at the polls on this final weekend of early voting before election day on tuesday. this is candidates taking their ground game out to the voters. rick boone is in san jose on the final push to tuesday. >> reporter: from a bay area donald trump street rally, to a hillary clinton phone bank in san francisco, the campaigns are turning up the heat. >> are you ready for a great democratic victory? >> reporter: along with volunteers, not only made calls, but also texted and tweeted voters, too. it appears voters are paying attention to the races in the

props. early voting lines were up to an hour saturday, like this one at the santa clara registrar voter's office. >> it's our highest number of registered voters ever. >> reporter: he also said there's a system to this organization to make sure every vote is counted. it's a 24-hour operation. every completed ballot that comes into this early voting location is checked by several teams, all the way down to the signature to ensure it's a match. after that, your ballot is counted in this room. that count is computed right here on this screen behind the window, and then there's one more step. that little laptop, that is the laptop that will have the official numbers for santa clara county that will then either elect or unelect some candidates. >> you got it. we sneaker net it, so we load a usb drive into it and walk the usb drive over to that computer over there and load them to the website. >> reporter: he says they do have a backup system just in case they run out of power. they have a backup generator

that basically goes right into working order, as soon as there may be a power outage inside this building. also, there's a backup if they happen to lose their computer system, lose the count on the vote. they can go and save the votes that were previously counted and then go back to a previous day. they have a backup on top of their backup. you can vote at the santa clara county registrar's voters office. two hospitals in the east bay are making sure that their patients can vote on tuesday. volunteers at hospitals in berkeley and oakland will bring registered patients voting ballots if they haven't already requested absentee ballots. volunteers will place a postcard on patients' breakfast trays to let them know they can vote. they'll then deliver the ballots to the appropriate election office.

the others caught in the cross fire. police responded quickly. all between 17 and 28 years old. there is a club on the street, a bar and many other businesses. the club owner said the people involved were not at the club that night, but two victims did come inside later for aid. the area has seen shootings before, and a dpal ri owner said after this incident, some guests aren't even coming to a reception tonight. >> people do not -- they're afraid to come down here. you know? they think they're going to get shot or something. or end up in the cross fire. it's certainly not good for my business. >> reporter: many business owners express their concern for the vick tills as details about the shooting are stim coming in. two men were among those shot, too. all the wounded in stable condition except for one in critical condition. investigators have not said just

yet what the motive is. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, christie. new information tonight in the killing of a young man whose body was found on the campus of sonoma state university. 18-year-old kirk kimberly was stabbed self times before he was put in a shallow grave on the estate. that comes to us from the sonoma county sheriff's office. so far, they have found no connection with the university or any of its students. kimberly's body was discovered on wednesday. he was last seen october 17th, leaving on his bicycle to meet a friend. the arrest of a newark soccer academy owner for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a minor. 29-year-old john graham was arrested at his home yesterday and booked into the fre mont jail. a girl came forward accusing him of up lawful sex acts. graham is the co-owner of the soccer academy in newark and a consultant to the newark soccer

club. it's not clear if the victim and suspect were connected through soccer or otherwise. a track dog led to three dramatic rescues at rodeo beach today. apparently this all started when the dog, whose name is pancake, got stuck on a cliff there. a good samaritan tried to rescue pancake but they got stuck, too. that's when the rescue team was called in and they air lifted everyone to safety. >> i'm incredibly grateful and so glad that i got out of it and that everybody got out of it uninjured. >> pancake's in a little trouble, though. the owner said that the dog was a little roughed up, but is at the vet and is now doing just fine. a change in the weather tonight. some rain coming in. but not for everyone. anthony here with the microclimate forecast. >> we have a system offshore bringing in some clouds. in fact, it's kicking up our waves. we've had high waves over the last couple of days, but a high

damien trujillo. the event is a great way to teach first generation and immigrant families about the college application process. science is best learned hands-on. at least that's the thinking from california education leaders, who are changing the guidelines for how science classes are taught. the new guidelines are part of the next generation science standard adopted by several states in recent years. on thursday the state education board approved a curriculum framework that calls for students to regularly engage in experiments, and investigations. it also connects science concepts to other subjects. despite all of the wealth of the silicon valley area, there are many people who do not know where their next meal is coming from. many say that that number is growing. but also, the help is, too. >> a local nonprofit working to end hunger started with a question from an 8-year-old boy to his father. garvin thomas has tonight's "bay area proud." >> not long after becoming a

single dad, sterner felt his son was spending too much time on his computer and video games. he wanted to shift his focus to the world, so took him volunteering. it wasn't just his son's focus that shifted. it is the last high school football game in the career of number 11, for lynnbrook high school, cassidy sterner. >> nice. >> it's the kind of moment when a dad will reflect -- >> that's going to make him feel good. >> reporter: -- hoping he's a good influence on his son. though yule sterner will be the first to tell you, it's cassidy who inspired him to do something remarkable. it happened when cassidy was just 8. and the pair were volunteering at a shelter in san diego. feeding the hungry and homeless. >> he literally said, dad, we have so much food at home, we have to help. we have to fix this. that was the entire genesis of it.

>> reporter: hunger at home is a nonprofit yule started back then, and one he revived a few years ago. after his arrival in silicon valley to run the san jose convention center for team san jose. >> the re-spark for me was seeing the abundance and growth and the tent communities growing into massive communities, getting to know individuals that were in need, thinking, this has to change. >> you've already seen what's in there? >> no, i haven't. >> reporter: with decades of experience, in hotel food and beverage, yule has always been familiar with the surplus food available to help the hungry. >> 4,000 to 5,000 -- >> reporter: but was ending up in the trash instead of on trays. >> you have a cobbler roast hunger at home has changed that in a big way. contracting with the convention center, major hotels, even levi stadium, they're responsible for nearly 2 million meals in just a few years, being donated to san

children at santa clara children's medical center. now in addition to the run here, there was an obstacle course, a fun run for the kids and a visit from a super hero, always popular. the super hero came via helicopter. this took place at the cupertino civic center. a nice day for that. look at the blue skies. >> damien trujillo doing a job out there today. >> getting it done. >> if you did anything outside today, we had a beautiful day. hope you took advantage of it. because we do have some clouds coming in right now and some showers starting to develop in the north bay. you know what, the rain coming in right now, not going to add too much. not going to amount too much. just a few sprinkles and then it will be out of here. we have the time lapse here from ocean beach. and there you can see the clouds move in, and they are with us right now. you can actually see the storm system right off the coastline. there are a few showers right along that cold front starting

to push in as we speak. the thing to note about the showers, not anything heavy. mostly just light rain. you can see the green there across parts of the north bay. that's where we're seeing the rain right now over towards -- approaching santa rosa just near windsor up next. temperatures aren't going to be as cold tonight. we're in the 50s and 60s for the most part. 62 in san francisco. tonight, don't expect any 40s across the north bay. the clouds will act like a blanket. but tomorrow morning when you wake up, here's your forecast. we're expecting cloudy conditions from the south bay to the tri-valley. we may see sprinkles for places like the south bay, even the peninsula. san francisco and the north bay is where you'll have the best chance of seeing light measurable rainfall. but only expect .01 inch of rain. a lot of cloud cover tomorrow morning. maybe light showers for the north bay. the shower activity will continue from about 6:00 in the

morning until about 10:00, 11:00. it will be mostly freight day throughout the day tomorrow with a few pieces of sunshine. and highs only near 70 degrees. the estimated rainfall amounts. not a whole lot. maybe enough to get the ground wet with the most measurable rain up across north bay. we're only talking about a few hundred deaths of an inch. 71 degrees for san jose tomorrow. good mix of cloud cover tomorrow in the afternoon hours. 72 for los gatos. in the east bay, temperatures in mid to upper 60s to the 70s. we may see light sprinkles around the inner bay. the peninsula is where you'll have a better chance of light showers happening. same for daly city. same for san francisco. again, morning showers, mid-of 0s there, and across the north bay. that's where you'll have the best chance of seeing any

measurable rain. santa rosa tomorrow at 67. once this storm system moves through, we're going to be done at least for the next couple of days dealing with showers. this moves in, and out tonight, and we're done with the high pressure builds in as we head to the upcoming week. that will clear out the skies and shift our winds, and that's going to bring in some warmer weather as we head to the upcoming week. your seven-day forecast, mid-70s. it's how we're looking this week. all the way from monday through friday. dry conditions. even in san francisco, mid-60s there. rain again tomorrow morning. it clears up tomorrow afternoon. the next chance of rain moves in next weekend, kind of like this weekend. a repeat pattern over the next seven days. nice, dry weather. >> we'll probably see some of the green signs, too.

with ballots collected yesterday, when the law was in limbo, it was on hold. a bar in paris has an impressive history when it comes to presidential elections in the u.s. in straw polls, they've correctly chosen presidents in elections. this year there is a clear front-runner. hillary clinton was leading donald trump. just like in the states, hillary supporters had some biting words for trump. >> the two parties are changing greatly. we're about to let the first woman president, i don't believe trump can win. i don't think americans are that stupid. >> the bar created two special cocktails for this election. the hillaryius, with bourbon and the trumpet, made with rum, lemon and chili pepper.

only american passport holders are eligible to vote in that poll. we have heard of stories of artists in san francisco being pushed out of their art studios in order to make room for new developments. now, artists are taking that fight to the ballot box. how some believe it will slow down new construction. >> i combine the print making with collage to create imaginary worlds of childhood. >> reporter: every artist will tell you one of the most important components of art is a place to make art. >> i need studio space in order to do large format work, messy work, smelly work. >> reporter: over the last few years, sharon stewer has watched fellow artists lose their studio spaces to development and changing uses. >> the art community has been devastated. the mission used to be filled with artists. >> reporter: artists are attempting to fight back at the

ballot box. prop x would force developers in the south of market and mission district to build replacement spaces if they remove things like production facilities, auto shops, child care centers, and art spaces. >> prop x is the first step to demanding that developers replace at least some of the cultural spaces, and the blue collar jobs that they're displacing. >> reporter: the wave of evictions and loss of cultural space has sparked battles across the city with many calling rampant development the death of san francisco's culture. >> i was in an art space in south of market -- >> reporter: flora davis worked for 26 years in studios on bryant until it closed last year, displacing dozens of artists. >> most of the people out of 43 artists, they -- i think maybe a third of us found a place. >> reporter: the recent closure of the south of market art facility is what people call the face of prop x.

women who were hurt did come in and get help. one gallery owner said this shooting and others have scared people. some refused to come to a reception tonight. >> from my understanding, some of the women who were supposed to come to this event are not coming because of what happened. like i said, it's like when something happens in a restaurant, they don't want to go back. it doesn't happen every day. >> reporter: the many business owners expressing concern for the victims. we're told all in stable condition. one critical. the men arrested were 21 and 28 years old. business owners say they didn't hear any arguing on the street before this happened. and so far, oakland police have not commented on a motive. christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christney, thanks very much. we have a unique way of doing it.

retail gun stores are now the focus of thieves dealing in stolen firearms. >> steven stock uncovers what is causing this problem. and also, what could be the solution. >> reporter: more than 2 million guns were stolen nationwide in the last ten years according to the fbi. as we first reported one year

ago, police are often the targets for those thefts, along with civilian gun owners. we found another group who's been targeted more recently here in california. gun stores. you're watching security camera footage of a gapg backing their suv through a plate glass storefront and iron gate to rob a gun store earlier this summer. it was one of five northern california gun store robberies in less than three months. in all, officials say more than 200 guns were taken. police caught up with the gang just hours later, arresting them in oakland in this takedown caught by nbc bay area's helicopter. despite the brazen smash-and-grab in rockland, the thieves only got away with one gun. walter ford said he and his staff take extra precautions every night, locking up every gun. the one that was stolen had been under repair and was left out.

>> they were doing it as sort of a gang initiation. >> reporter: a nearby gun store wasn't as lucky. it lost more than 100 guns. that's because the guns were not locked up, and the store did not have surveillance cameras. why go to these extremes, these lengths? you're doing the responsible thing but there are many gun store owners who don't do that. >> it's less about the money, it's more about the safety and security of the public. we have a responsibility. if we're gun store owners, or even gun owners, i think we have to lead. >> reporter: the latest information available, in the last three years, the number of guns stolen from licensed dealers neerld doubled here in california. atf officials tell us many of the gun store heists are pulled off by gangs who specialize in breaking into these kind of stores. >> they have a very unique way of doing it, and they -- that's their business, gun stores. >> reporter: graham barlow was in charge of the sacramento

field office. he was in rockland and on the case hours after the smash ound grab. >> i think we all agree that firearms ownership is a very serious business and that people who own firearms should be serious about how they store their firearms and the records they keep with those. >> reporter: it's not just gun stores and dealers who are targets. a year ago, nbc bay area first uncovered more than 700 guns stolen from local and federal law enforcement officers. updated data now shows more than 1,100 police issued weapons either being lost or stolen since 2010. investigative unit then later teamed with journalists across the state and traced more than 4,000 lost and stolen guns in california directly to other crimes later committed with those very same weapons. but things may be getting more difficult for thieves. following our first investigation, both san francisco and oakland toughened their ordinances, requiring that all gun owners, not just police officers, take better care and lock up their weapons.

>> we want to put a stop to the spiral of shootings. we have to do things differently. >> reporter: rebecca caplan is not only vice mayor of oakland, she's been a victim of gun violence, too. a stray bullet flew through the window of her home. >> we're sprepgtening our laws locally to make it harder for people to get illegal guns both by having safe storage requirements so they can't be stolen. >> reporter: our investigation prompted another state law proposed by san mateo state senator jerry hill. and signed into law by governor jerry brown in october. >> i wasn't aware of it until the media brought it to my attention. >> reporter: most recently our investigation prompted a congressman to introduce in september legislation in congress requiring all federal law enforcement officers lock up their guns. >> one of the bottom lines would be that when guns are not in service, when they're not on the individual officer's person, they're locked and stored, so that things like you reported on can't happen. >> it's almost like a

activity overnight. mainly through midnight. and then tomorrow morning as the sun starts to come up, we'll see another round of light showers for the north bay. san francisco and coastline. not much more in terms of that afterwards. we are going to stay mostly cloudy for tomorrow. that means a cooler day on the way. look at rainfall now. we're talking basically enough to get the ground wet for most of the bay, if we get anything across the east and south bay. most of the general models are showing that the accumulate rainfall will remain across parts of the north bay. the forecast for tomorrow, 71 degrees for san jose. a good amount of cloud cover out there as well. that will mean for a cooler day like oakland 67. fremont back to 71. we maf have sprinkles across the east foothills. the better chance will be across the pbz. 67 for san mateo. mid-60s in san francisco. do expect with wet roadways for tomorrow morning but it will clear out by the afternoon hours. 70 tomorrow for novato.
