you're trump with clinton that close to 270 you lose one of these she is over 270. they are getting trump campaign has been some discouraging news out of nevada. if clinton wins that with the traditional battle ground she is over 270. you've got to flip a state from blue to red if you are trump. where do you look? for states that fit rain shower demographic profile. rural populations, white working class. probably not a large latino population given the indications we're seeing. so where has trump been? minnesota, in michigan today, pennsylvania, wants to finish in these three. what do they see? they see like the upper peninsula, the rural parts of northern michigan, mccomb county outside detroit. they see like the iron range in minnesota, the rural sort of interior pennsylvania. those are the opportunities they see. make no mistake about it this is a long shot move by the trump campaign. there have been gray states disappear. >> and good point, who paid attention in school when we

learned the abbreviations of states. >> next he is going to wow us with the capitols. >> area codes. >> chuck and nicole are here as well. let's wrap up this comey business. okay. i mean what's the final word? he gives a letter on the end of october, now the sort of clean bill of health yesterday. going back to his original decision not to prosecute. where does this land in terms of the effect? >> immeasurable. watt in the poll, it halted her growth and the focus had been on her prosecuting case against donald trump. that shifted the focus. it also changed donald trump as a candidate. the very same article that you were asking kelly ann about has rich details for political junkies in "the new york times" i think it's an article any one who cares about what goes on behind the curtain should read because it talks about how donald trump's psyche changed. it was a moment that made him

think he could win this thing. so the impact is immeasurable because it changed the race that we saw, it also changed the candidate getting him on message. >> do we need more evidence of who her e-mails impacted her campaign than the fact we got crickets on this from her yesterday after what was good news? >> because they don't want to talk about it. there is no good news e-mail headline. it's sort of okay, it's not damaging. i think at the end of the day we're going to look back and say this may have cost the democratic party one or two senate seats. what this did down the ballot to galvanize republicans to basically vote like republicans again, you cannot you know, we may look at the makeup of the senate and say a comey effect. >> i'm old enough to remember when early voting didn't exist. it was absentee ballot. early voting is huge now like 40 million have voted. are there tea leaves or bread crumbs to read in what we've

seen? >> part is that road map we showed you. some of the indications about turnout among latino voters, energy, and if that's what we end up seeing in a state like naxt or nevada that could be very bad news for donald trump and again that could be part of why the trump campaign is looking at those other states. >> on turnout and energy. that poll on friday, 8 in 10 people say they are left repulsed or disgusted. do those people vote? are they motivated to vote? >> one of the sad and weird things about campaigns. how they end on negative ads. that's because they do motivate voters. i also think one of the things we'll talk about wednesday morning is hidden vote. a hidden trump vote. we'll see if there is. i think there might be a lot of wom voting differently than their spouses. i think there will be a lot of lessons wednesday morning. >> thank you so much. we're going to have a lot more

"it's cancer, but it's not leukemia, nor is it in his central nervous system." on social media, an outpouring of sympathy from fans and friends. singer rod stewart tweeting, all our love to noah. harry connick jr. writing, let's all pray for noah so he can win

this fight. and shannen doherty who is battling breast cancer had this to say at an american cancer society function this saturday. going to be a lot of people that are angry either way. >> the united states just seems like there's so much animosity right now. no one wants to just -- corny as it sounds -- just get along. >> is election stress like the one thing right now that's actually bringing everybody together? >> you know, that's a great question. i think in a lot of ways it is, yeah. >> reporter: regardless of whether they lean red or blue, recent surveys show more than half of americans are disgusted with this campaign and call the election a significant source of stress in their lives. it's not just the frayed nerves, but the fatigue. we really are losing sleep. getting less of it after big moments like debates where the rhetoric's ratcheted up more than ever, it seems. >> is to replenish -- >> such a nasty woman. >> i am sick and tired of the negative, dark, divisive, dangerous vision and behavior of people who support donald trump. >> these have been very

antagonistic campaigns filled with a lot of angry, negative rhetoric. we also think that social media is playing a role in people's amount of election related stress. >> i think especially seeing it on facebook with the insane statuses, all of the instagrams. everyone's pretty sick of it. >> i have blocked a lot of people. a lot of people that i thought were friends. i just had to hide them on facebook. >> reporter: facebook says they've had 5.3 billion likes, posts, comments, and shares related to 2016 in the first nine months of this year alone. not easy to escape an election that's everywhere. >> i actually stopped watching most of the news about it months ago. >> because you were getting to stressed? >> yeah. it was too bothersome. all the sound bites and the quotes. and i had basically made up my mind. >> reporter: the good news -- this 2016 slog's soon to be history. >> hopefully it's a reaction of relief. i'm hoping. but i guess it is really going to depend on who gets it. >> reporter: still, a word of

good monday morning 8:26, i'm sam brock. police in hayward are investigating a deadly double shooting there where the killer is still out there. it happened about 8:30 on rancor near tennyson, not far from the high school. police said two unidentified hispanic men were shot and killed and so far no arrests have been made. witnesses at the seb talked to pete off camera. he believed the shooting could have started in an apartment complex where the investigators are casing. police have not told us whether investigators believe this is or is not targeted shooting. it's monday morning, sometimes your head in a fog, mike, how many drivers are actually driving in a fog. >> south bay driving through a

forecast wise for you. for the week ahead, flood risk down through the lower gulf coast. we're watching that along there. showers around the great lakes, sunshine along the eastern seaboard. as we get into the middle part of the week, much of the country dry, though wet weather in the pacific northwest. temperature wise much of the country above normal. that will be kind of nice. but then as we head toward the midweek period we'll start to see things getting back to normal, especially down through the gulf. look for much above normal weather still throughout much of the country south bay peninsula still seeing patchy fog and low clouds. you notice a little more sun. partly cloudy skies north toward san francisco and north bay. visibility at the time south of san jose down to a quarter mile or less around san joaquin. low clouds starting to break up now, transition to hazy sunshine heading to afternoon, highs today low- to mid-70s around

santa clara valley and tri-valley. close to 70 in san francisco. mild temperatures continue for a couple more days and increasing clouds and chance of light rain in the north bay friday night into early saturday. forget, you can get weather any time you need. just go to the weather channel on cable. jason sudeikes is a busy guy these days. few weeks ago he welcomed his second child, a little girl named daisy with fiance olivia wi wilde. now he's starring in the off broadway "dead poet's society" made famous by of course robin williams in the movie. this is a bold move. congratulations. good morning. >> thank you. thank you. >> don't know whether i'm talking about the new baby or the role. >> both are brave endeavors. >> easy decision or tough decision to bring this iconic movie story and this iconic role played by a guy like robin williams to the stage? >> easy decision with the elements and the story. easy in the sense like it is an amazing character. i think it is a tremendous story

still. still relevant and still prescient in the same ways as it is like kind of timeless. but then the actual endeavor of playing a part so -- captured so beautifully and so iconically by an absolute iconic hero of my personally was one that i had to be very thoughtful with. >> you said so relevant. so needed right now. this is unequivocally an inspirational story. after what we've just lived through for the last year, year-and-a-half, this really is going to go well with audiences. >> i hope so. it's been really fun. i think we've done ten shows now. yeah, it still hits people. i had friends of mine who had never seen the film. be just like this is a story. everybody that read it got teary eyed by the end of the play. >> just to make sure -- maybe there are some people who don't know the story, it is a story of a group of teenage boys at a prestigest prep school and one of their teachers is a guy named john keating who inspires them. tell me about him. >> basically john keating is a

rabble-rouser. he is an alum of the school. he was a rhodes scholar. he went to oxford. he has a very different way of teaching, encouraging kids to think for themselves and outside of the box, not just the path the school has for them. >> i've seen the movie probably 20 times. every time i listen to some of the speeches that keating gives in that movie, i think back to people in my life. who was the john keating character in my life. did you have one? >> i had a couple. very lucky that way. i think that's one of the biggest things that i've benefited from, is the accidental or actual mentoring that i received. but, yeah, i had a great high schoolteacher named sally shipley. i had amazing directors and teachers in my chicago second city experience. tina fey over -- just across the street here was a big mentor for me in my early days of writing at "snl." lorn certainly. it is someone that sees

something in someone before they see it themselves. tarn parents can be that way but it doesn't need to be familial. it could be in your cul-de-sac or the guys that played led zeppelin or the beasty boys. you're like what is it? as long as you can keep encouraging people to sort of look beyond what they are -- their own baggage can sort of get in the way of them seeing, it is a nice gesture to offer. >> being on stage every night is going to take you away from bath time for a while. >> that's true. >> is that a good thing or a bad thing? >> i shower now. >> i don't mean you. >> oh! sorry. okay. >> talking about the baby. >> it's all right. it's all right. again, i think i've got six little boys to watch over when i'm away from him now in my class. yeah. he'll have to deal with it. >> any sense of just wishing you were at "snl" this year with this kind of -- with the riches they are devouring every week in this political season? >> no. it's been fun to watch though. they've been doing an amazing

job. if it came down that they needed to do a trump/biden boxing match, i was a phone call away. get romney in there, too. yeah. but it's -- you know, it's great just to see what they're doing and to view it as like a guy who played the game for a while and is retired and can be sort of like, i know what they're feeling, i understand the microscope they've under. >> you played the game highest level. and this is going to be great. we're back at 8:39. with the holidays fastly approaching, you are probably looking for a way to up your game when it comes to your holiday table decor. good morning. congrats on the book. i think people like they sometimes get into the flower rut like you've got to do flowers and you have some different ideas. >> absolutely. oftentimes you can just gather things already in the house, you can get creative with it and you can actually put things on the table that can be good conversation starters. >> i love this first idea. you are using framed photos as the centerpiece. how would you do this if you were having guests? >> what i love is the idea that you would put something in the center that people really like want to talk about. oftentimes during this time of year we're gathering people who haven't seen each other so i think it is a great idea to ask your guests ahead of time, submit your favorite image from the year. submit an image from your favorite vacation, a wedding, something special. then use the frames around your house to put down the middle of the table. it is a great conversation starter and it gives everybody

something to say. >> you can use it as place cards, too. you don't have to use expensive frames. you can get the cheap ones or what you got around the house. is there absolutely. it is a great way to refreshen your frames. this time of year people forget because everything is digital to freshen up your frames. so it is a good reminder to do that. >> another super cute idea, books. not just any books. you get recommendations from your guests. >> again, ask your guests ahead of time, what's your favorite read of the year? shift the topic away from politics to this and put some books down the middle of the table to again generate some great conversation, give everybody a reason to participate. what's really nice about this is if you want to go the extra distance, it is a great parting gift. people can take home a book that they didn't contribute. >> that's great. so a party favor. then i see these movie signs for the placards. what's the idea there? had. >> so instead of a typical place cardholder, ask everybody ahead of time, what's your favorite tv show of the year?

what's your favorite movie of the year? and then use those as the place card holders. it gives people a chance to kind of walk around the table beforehand, sort of figure out, a, where they're sitting, but, b, what everybody else contributed. again, it gives people a reason to generate a conversation. >> i love that that's really getting a unique conversation going. dessert as centerpiece, a beautiful idea whose time has time. >> this is from my favorite bakery, sweet henrietta's. but you can use whatever bakery you want. desserts are so often relegated to the end. they're tucked away in the kitchen. if you have a beautiful cake or beautiful pie, why not let that be the centerpiece? you don't have to go the extra distance of spending money on cut flowers. use your bread as a place cardholder. again, give people the thought that if i like what i'm seeing, i will save a little extra room during the meal. >> that's always a good reminder to me, save room for the

we areback now, 8:45. week two of our special series "today food all-star thanksgiving." this month we're pairing chefs to help make your holiday seamless and delicious. lidia bastianich is serving a special thanksgiving menu and andrew caramelini of lucca, also here in new york. guys, thanks for being here for thanksgiving. we're making a vegetable we've all gone 180 degrees on.

brussel sprouts. >> you have to caramelize it. you're going to roast them. i'm going to saute them in a pan until it gets nice and caramelized. >> i read through these recipes, i love them both. they're very different. just starting off by having them. is that the best way to do it? >> the leaves like this. i like to use leaves as well. just open it up. you know that intense flavor that you feel, that sulfur flavor, you kind of release it if tu let it out. >> these get all crispy, too. >> the leaves. >> yeah. it is like little chips. >> you don't want to waste anything. food. so here are the ingredients. you saw how we cleaned the brussels sprouts. olive oil, bacon. you saute the bacon. you just take the bacon off. and you drain it off. and you put it -- >> leave all that good stuff in the pan. >> exactly. you add the onions to that just like that. garlic. you make kind of a hotspot here,

get the garlic to caramelize very nice. a little bit of. he pepperoncini. a little bit of vinegar. you let it steam. you let it sweat. about 15 minutes. 15, 20 minutes. nice and easy. you want to caramelize it just like that. this is how you want it. this is where the flavor is. you know that green -- bright green vegetables. yeah, they are nice to look and everything, but these taste delicious. >> look how you garnished your dish over there. >> but a little bit of -- >> walnuts. >> just crunchiness and a little bit of flavor. >> come on back and join us. thank you. andrew, what's different about your recipe? >> i'm italian but thinking about thanksgiving and i love apples, i love celery. i'm doing like a sweet and sour apple brussel sprout thing. >> i wish people could smell

what i'm standing over here. >> i like to put them in the oven. so i just salt and pepper, olive oil, put it in the oven, get it nice and crispy. take apple cider. reduce by three-quarter, and add a little apple cider vinegar. >> why? just to offset the sweetness? >> yeah. a kind ever sweet and sour apple glaze. very, very american. put some black pepper in there. you have this kind of glaze. it is great because the brussels sprouts are a little bit better and you have this sweetness to it. >> we've got people downstairs trying both these recipes. >> really, really good. >> delicious. >> this is a great thanksgiving thing just put that glaze over the brussels sprouts. toss them around to get them all glazed. the bottom of the celery plant, if you can't find this, you can use fennel. fennel works really well. kind of an intense celery

flavor. really good for you. we make a little salad. fresh apple on there. little bit of the celery root. breadcrumbs because i love that texture. put it in the center. you can make the glaze the day before so you don't have to stress about doing it the day of. >> perfect. guys, downstairs, not a competition. you like them both? >> both winners. >> you know what's interesting though? we do have two votes for andrew's and two votes for lydia's. but everyone agrees, they're both awesome. >> that's the way it should end. happy thanksgiving. you're going to be back november 23rd, along with more than 30 other chefs for a huge thanksgiving celebration on the plaza. going to have more recipes from two more chefs in our next half-hour. of course, you can find all these great ideas at our website, today.com/food. up next, a live performance from the world-famous rockettes out on that chilly plaza. but first, this is "today" on nbc.

of this young man is captured. it's beautiful. i was with a friend. we were -- it is that kind of movie afterwards you keep talking about. and you're filling in the holes. it stays with you. trust me. go see it. i'm going to be sitting down with the cast for an interview coming up soon. but it is stunning. it is a stunning work of art. >> wow. >> what did you do? >> didn't do much. i had a very emotional week with the world series. you know. and this weekend -- >> you were there! >> i was there. you know what? it was so exciting to be part of history, to watch this. toay i was there. i can't remember in my lifetime ever seeing anything like this. >> i had to be up really early the next morning and i was up until 1:00 a.m. new york time watching the game. i was like, this is the best game i've ever seen. you couldn't turn away. just to feel the passion of two teams wanting it really so bad. playing their hearts out. >> and great history for both teams. whoever won, it was going to be a great story. >> and that's all i know.

did you see "snl" saturday night? >> i sure did. >> what are your thoughts on -- >> my weekend actually included a little reunion with my friend, alec baldwin. i made a little guest appearance on his game show called "match game." >> which is a terrific show. >> then that evening he went on to do his appearance on "snl." i didn't know what it was going to be but i knew they were doing something special. it was so awesome. i felt slightly touched by it. >> a lot of people had that reaction. >> okay. really? i wasn't like that bizarre? >> you can still be both. we're friends. i can do that. >> there is this sort of over election stress -- stressful situation right now so i thought it was -- i was oddly moved by it that they broke the fourth wall and spoke as themselves and said let's just all pull together as america. >> what sta like as an actor to do that? have you ever done that, broke that wall to give a message? >> i'm sure i have. i mean i want to say i have no idea. i have no idea what it is like

to be an actor. you'll have to call my friend, alec, and ask him what that's like. >> but they were so terrific. obviously alec baldwin as donald trump, kate mckinnon as hillary clinton. and they find -- they've just done such a tour de force between these two characters. but take a look at what happens when they finally broke character. >> i'm sorry, kate. i just hate yelling all this stuff at you like this. >> yeah. i know. right? this whole election has been so mean. >> i mean i just feel gross all the time. don't you guys feel gross all the time about this? >> woo! >> you know what i think can help us? let's get out of here. >> what? where will we go? >> you'll see. ♪ >> and then they make a break for it. they get to times square. by the way, in record time.

so we all gained an extra hour of sleep yesterday. we should all feel rested and refreshed. >> we should, but here to tell us about that and more, nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie aczar. nice to see you. let's just jump right into this sleep that that extra hour was beneficial to us. >> honestly, i have to tell you that i thought i benefited from it yesterday. i did feel like i got an extra hour of sleep. the research would maybe suggest otherwise. specifically that for the week after we switch our clocks either fall back or spring forward, that your sleep is really disrupted for the next week, meaning that you have trouble falling asleep at night, there's middle of the night waking. you're getting up earlier and that the people who have the most difficulty with this are the larks. those are the early risers. and also people who sleep generally less than seven and a half hours tend to feel the disruption more than other people. >> so how do you get back on track? >> the know what? the same kind of advice that we

partial sleep deprivation -- that's 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 hours of sleep. that's a significant amount. ate up to or consumed up to 385 calories more than people who didn't. >> a day? >> a day. in a 24-hour period. that equated to about 4 1/2 slices of bread a day. leaving the researchers to conclude that sleep deprivation could actually affect your risk for obesity simply by the intake of more calories. i thought that was super interesting. and people ate more fat and less protein, carbohydrates stayed the same. so rule, sleep your eight hours. >> worried well. >> this is interesting. this has to do with, we know cardiovascular risk can be influenced by people's health behaviors -- diet, tobacco, smoking. this specifically looked at if you have health anxiety -- that hypochondriac worried about constantly getting sick, et cetera, could increase your risk for having ischemic heart disease. we know anxiety in general can be a risk factor for heart disease and specifically

toward a rational drug policy." woman: "it's time for a new approach." man: vote yes on 64. right now some 50,000 runners are recovering after taking part in the 40th annual new york city marathon yesterday. one of those amazing athletes, had an unthinkable loss. >> and al was the one who inspired her to lose 130 pounds. tina is here today for what she thinks is a tour of the studios. >> she doesn't know we have a surprise for her, but first we want you to hear tina's surprising story. >> been overweight my entire life. dreamt of being an athlete my entire life and i'm finally going to live my dream and run the new york city marathon. 26 years ago, we lost my dad from chronic obesity.

i was on the exact same path and i knew it was time for a change. i was inspired after al roker had his gastric bypass to go and visit the surgeon. i decided to have the vertical sleeve surgery. i was up two days after walking around the neighborhood. i had to just start moving. i had always dreamed of being a runner. so i started training for my first 5k. after i ran my first 5k, i knew i was hooked and i was going to do a 10k. i did several 10ks. set my sights on a half marathon. then suddenly had run nine half marathons. i lost 130 pounds in 11 months. i was at my goal weight. i had blogged about my journey since the very beginning and i put a post up in 2010 about how al roker ran the new york marathon and i remember seeing a clip on him training on the treadmill at 2:00 in the morning and his job starts at 4:00 in the morning and my job didn't.

i didn't feel like i had any excuses at that point. i read my blog again and it had said i was going to make him proud one day and run the new york city marathon. so i decided that's exactly what i was going to do. three months ago, about half-way through training for new york, i lost my husband to a massive heart attack on his bike, on his way to work. completely unexpected. and i didn't know how i was going to go on but i really knew that he would have wanted me to just keep running. and that meant getting out of bed, setting my alarm at 4:45 and doing my long runs and showing up as hard as it was. running has really saved my life and i had no idea what it was going to prepare me for. training for a marathon taught me that even when you think you can't go on, you do. when i became a volunteer coach for the atlanta track club, they really have inspired me, especially through these difficult times this community

has been there for me. they're coming to new york with me. my coach, amy, is a former olympian and has been by my side from 5k to marathon. >> tina is one of those amazing positive people that comes and does things not just for herself. she's someone that puts everybody in front of herself and now we're going to put her front and center and make her cross this finish line that she's been dreaming about for a very long time. >> we're also raising money for kilometer kids which is our organization for teenagers teaching them basically how to make great decisions and live healthy lifestyles. i think about where i was and i think about ar i am now. and i'm really proud of myself because i never gave up. every excuse in the book i could have used and i had a couple of really good ones. i'm going to run are the new york marathon for my husband. i'm going to keep that promise to al roker and i'm going to do this for myself, most of all.

sweetness. some spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves. we just pour a little bit of vegetable oil to bring it together. then i just give it a few pulses so it gets that nice crumbly, crunchy texture. i actually love to throw this on everything because it adds a lot of flavor. here we have our cooked sweet potatoes. if you want to start mashing. >> sure. >> go for it. i'm going to add coconut milk which keeps it creamy but is also vegan. when you have a lot of guests and don't really know what everyone's diet is, you might need a vegan dairy-free option. >> where do you get vegan marshmallows? is that a common thing? are all marshmallows vegan? >> they usually have gelatin in them which isn't vegan. just make sure you find marshmallows with no gelatin. i'm going to add some dried cranberries. raisins. dried currants, whatever you
