poured out of this building. we're at the javits center this morning, hillary clinton headquarters, disappointed and shocked, and many of them in tears. they were expecting a win. they didn't get it. as for all the bay area people that were here, big-time hillary clinton supporters who were here in new york by invitation from mrs. clinton herself, thafl walked away shocked and they, too, were asking what now in a new donald trump america. i'm surprised that the polling showed she was up, and clearly that wasn't the case. >> tomorrow we all have to roll up our shirt sleeves, and we just have to work harder on advancing all these issues that we've gotten behind. there's so many more things that we have left to do, we all have to work harder. >> one thing worth adding here, there was so much impact and support on both sides of the coin from hillary clinton and the bay area. it will be curious now to see what donald trump's relationship will be with the bay area and specifically the silicon valley.

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from oakland with look at the overnight anger that filled the streets there. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. many of those protests happened shortly after midnight when it was declared donald trump would be the president elect. we moved to 24th and broadway. you see damage from the protests. you see a broken window near that broadway auto mow, old mitsubishi parts building, vacant building that's boarded up. i told you i spoke to oakland

police not too long ago, a majority of the protests in oakland came off broadway between 17th and 24th street. we heard reports of chanting "not our president." there are reports of protesters in berkeley running on to 24 east at telegraph avenue. that's where we're told a protester was hit by a car. that protester is recovering at a hospital from those injuries. here is what chp had to say about it. >> we want to remind people, although protesting is a right, protesting on a freeway is not the place to do it. it's dangerous, illegal. we've been asking people to stay off the freeway for exactly this reason. >> now, for the most part, guys, the streets have been clean. we've seen the street sweepers cleaning up debris around broadway. we're showing this vacant building that had some damage from overnight. we'll continue to keep an eye on any development as they po up this morning. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> from the streets of oakland to wall street, overnight

features plummeted in reaction to trump's victory. >> scott mcgrew, volatility looks like it's going to be the standard moving forward. >> of course, we don't know what to think or what to expect because we've never quite done this. we will not for quite some time. remember, not only has donald trump said he would not approve of trade deals like the tpp, said he would tear off nafta, the republican house and senate may allow him to do it. that would end free trade with canada and mexico. world markets off slightly this morning. part of it is simply timing. here at home dow futures down as much as 800 points. nasdaq down 110, s&p 500 koun. if all hell breaks loose today or the next few days on the market, the stock markets will take a pause, a rest, if and when the s&p falls 7%, when the index hits 1989. again we'll see it at 13% and

again at 20% if that were to happen. again, we don't know. i do want to broaden this out for when i talk to you next about more than just the stock market. that is people's houses and mortgage rates. oil prices, retirement, h-1b visas and the people we work with in silicon valley, these are sipgss where we just don't know. >> exactly. we could see a very big change in so many different dynamics of the economy. >> a lot of changes, and the stock market is just one system. >> talking about the global economy at this point, scott many mcgrew, thank you very much. california voters, by the way, are saying yes to prop 64. this was a headliner from last night, which means recreational marijuana is going to be legal in california. there was also a decisive margin as you see, 56 to 44% of voters approving it. it's going to allow residents to possess and grow marijuana as well. dispensaries will have to receive new licenses to sell to the general public.

those are not supposed to be issued until sometime in 2018. bay area voters passed measure rr which supporters called crucial for b.a.r.t. future. voters in san francisco and alameda counties overwhelmingly approved it despite opposition. >> they've mismanaged the running of the system, escalators and elevators that don't work, fake security cameras, bathrooms that don't open or excessive over time for their workers. >> not one dime of this bond measure is going to janitors or station agents. it's all going right back into the infrastructure. the people that really benefit from this bond measure are our 450,000 daily riders. >> support in contra costa county was a little more shaky. measure rr still has the two-thirds majority required to pass. you can, of course, count on nbc bay area to bring you all the latest election results on our website, nbcbayarea.com. head to our election results tab at the top of the screen.

you can get the latest news of the races around the state and in the bay area. now at 5:10, we are seeing temperatures around the bay area this morning, in the upper 40s around santa rosa, 56 in san jose. watch out for thick fog in napa. down to a quarter mile in napa county. santa cruz seeing reduced visibility around a quarter mile. our hour-by-hour forecast in the south bay, saratoga climbing into the upper 70s, almost ten degrees above average from downtown san jose to morgan hill where it can get close to 80. 71 in san francisco and more mild temperatures through tomorrow. you'll see the numbers in the 70s around san francisco. more clouds, a little cooling for friday and a slight chance of a few north bay sprinkles early saturday morning and temperatures staying in the 70s with clearing skies for the upcoming weekend. looking at a smooth drive around most of the bay. a couple trouble spots. we have a car fire that we're

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us to break down the numbers. >> you can now recycle the 200-page voter guide. add that to the pile. we'll talk about gun control, the vallco measures, redevelopment of the mall in cupertino and the tax soda. let's start with proposition 63, gun control. a vast majority of californians, 63% of voters said yes, banning the sale and possession of large capacity ammunition magazines and requiring background checks for ammo purchases and calling for felony charges for gun

thefts. the two measures that decide the future of the vallco mall in cupertino. a majority said no to measure c which allowed for retail entertainment, but no office or residential spaces. a majority said no to measure d, a $3 billion vallco town-specific plan which did allow housing and office space there along with areas for schools, educational purposes as well. vallco's future is still in the air. only half of the precincts have reported on the measures. the associated that tax, fran, albany, final numbers, with 100% reporting, san francisco, 6% said yes, oakland, 62% said yes, albany you said, yes, but with greater margin, 71% of voters passing that one cent per ounce tax on soda and other sweet

drinks. in the next half hour, we'll update numbers for death penalty measures along with school funding and the plastic bag bans. that's coming up in the next half hour. also coming up at 6:30 this morning, we got word that hillary clinton will be finally speaking. of course we'll take that live. >> something else going on locally, laura, watching the ballot measure that san jose voters so far have supported. they will offer more hours for part time employers living with low incomes. here are the numbers, the latest we've had, with 30% precincts reporting, 64% voted yes on measure e. it's also known as the opportunity to work initiative. we should underscore at this point it's only 30% of precincts so far that have reported. it would require reporters to give current part-time workers more hours before they hire new staff members. let's take a look at other local top stories, a fight in the street turns deadly in san jose. police responding to the area of west alma a f knew and mastic

street. about 8:00 last night on reports of several people getting involved in a fight. what they found was an adult man who was pronounced dead at the scene. a sexual assault investigation is under way at san jose state's south campus. university police say a woman was using a portable toilet near the bus shelter when a man forced open the door and attacked her. the attack was interrupted by friends of the victim and the suspect took off on a bike. a high surf advisory is in effect until 6:00 tonight with waves reaching up to 20 feet. beachgoers are reminded to look out for the so-called sneaker waves that push beyond the normal coastline along with stronger rip currents. time for weather and traffic together. we do have some note of fog in some areas. >> north bay and along the coast, too. seeing visibility at times down to about a quarter mile this morning, the wave heights very impressive offshore. we're looking at wave heights to 20 feet there. you look at the current conditions in both half moon bay, santa cruz, west of san

francisco, 14 to 18 feet. this high surf advisory through 6:00. some breakers could get above 25 feet by pillar point. strong storms to the west, a lot of wind associated with the storms. by tomorrow, we begin to see the wave heights come down. don't let your guard down. by friday, looks like another surge of high surf coming your way as you approach the weekend. the morning starting off cooler than yesterday. 49 in nap -- 51 in napa, 49 in santa rosa. that's where we see some of the most widespread patchy dense fog with visibility down to a quarter 3450i8. san francisco, patchy clouds, not too bad. in san jose, looks like fog starting to stet up east of downtown. right now 56. adds we move through the afternoon, los gatos, nice in the afternoon. we'll see the numbers close to 78 degrees by 2:00 today. around the rest of the south bay, downtown san jose ten degrees above average, 77 degrees. near 80 in gilroy.

tri-valley temperatures close to 80 in pleasanton and around dublin today, livermore 76. 75 in concord. peninsula temperatures in the mid 70s this afternoon, close to 70 in downtown san francisco, and the north bay with the patchy fog this morning, clearing out to some hazy sunshine and highs in the low 70s. seven-day forecast shows things will be staying mild for the next few days. san francisco low 70s tomorrow. more clouds friday, a few sprinkles in the north bay early on saturday morning. look at our valley temperatures tomorrow, more spots getting closer to 8 o degrees. we'll see cooling with more clouds heading into the weekend. mike? >> also talking about who is hosting thanksgiving. the south bay and peninsula, i want to talk about this car fire on 680. we're watching that around auto mall parkway. a big slowdown for highway 4. this crash on bailey blocking one lane. chp doesn't give much more detail than that. we hear there are four vehicles

morning everyone was able to get out okay. a massive, massive fire at a former steel plant. we'll get you more images as the story develops. donald trump's victory is apparently sparking new interest from some americans about leaving the united states. online searches including move to canada and immigrate to canada spiked as the election results rolled in. at one point heavy traffic knocked out canada's immigration website. canada was trending on twitter. many polling locations were busy, one briefly disrupted over what turned out to be burnt toast. >> we saw this yesterday morning when chuck coppola was reporting from sclera's registrar's office. a fire alarm went off as voters cast ballots in san jose. you see everyone filing out there. they ended upstanding outside for a while as officials tried to figureout what was happening.

election staff and voters stopped what they were doing and all gathered in the parking lot. >> this is pretty uncommon. we've never, ever had a fire alarm come on during election day. >> 20 minutes later and the building was cleared. eventually everybody filed back in. most voters waited it out and returned to finish their ballots. election day in the bay area also came with a few glitches. our investigative unit uncovered problems in alameda county. in the precinct at the ac transit library workers say a ballot machine broke down for hours. officials had to resort to old-fashioned lock boxes to secure the vote. similar problems with vote counting machines were reported at other polling locations in alameda county where backup systems were put into place. trying to get you caught up right now. if you're just waking up to the news, donald trump is the 45th president of the united states, he will be. it's not what a lot of people were expecting, not what the pollsters called for. the overnight reaction.

in oakland, streets quickly turned kai chaotic. >> we're seeing video now, pete, of the streets on fire. how are things now? >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. for the most part, streets have been cleared out. we moved to 12th and broadway. you can still see some of the damage of the wells fargo building. we got more details from oak lapd. police spoke to them not too long ago. they say there were no injuries in the streets of oakland, but one individual cited. about five businesses vandalized in the process. in the video you can see a majority of those protesters in oakland off broadway between 7th and 24th streets. there were reports of them chanting "not our president." around the same time, just after midnight, there were reports of protesters in berkeley, running down the 24 east at telegraph avenue. yet a protester who got hit by a

up on campus. >> reporter: a lot of emotion at sjsu. around 1:00 a.m., statues of olympian tommy smith and john carlos that you see behind me became a gathering place as social media spread the word for students to assemble here and talk about the outcome of the presidential election. a fight erupted captured on cell phone bibi standers. at least one trump supporter among the students was punched repeatedly and two others were chased by as many as 30 other students. >> this is crazy. this is really, really crazy. it's showing how volatile this whole place is, how big this election is to everybody. this has never happened before. everybody is hating each other for this, but it's never been this bad. >> reporter: campus police tried to break up the fight. the apparent student trump supporters who were attacked managed to escape. so far there are no reports of serious injuries.

but the speeches here that spread and seemed a spontaneous venting of emotion were peaceful for the most part. no arrests have been made. live in san jose, chuck coppola, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, chuck. let's turn now to scott mcgrew as he talks about the business and market impact of all of this. one of the questions we're looking at, one of many, who is going to get to work in america, what the mortgage rates will be. >> brexit is the obvious comparison. remember england is still in the middle of brexit. they haven't even started article 50. we don't know what's going to happen there. our best comparison turns out to be a lousy comparison, doesn't it? let's make a list of things we need to think about. not my list. is president elect trump's list, things he has promised to do and the potential effects on you and the rest of the world. here is that list. take a look. stock market. the stock market could get very

unstable, oil prices could get very unstable. mr. trump has talked about military action against iran in the past. interest rates could go up. mr. trump has talked about not paying back american debt as well. we can talk about that. we kind of breezed through that list. here is the h-1b visa issue. h-1b could mean changes for tens of thousands of people in the bay area workers and their families. if you're here as a guest now, you'll be here as a guest of the united states tomorrow and the next day. it's the renewal of those h-1b visas that would be the issue. as for the markets, we'll talk about that as well. don't let the markets distract you. we want to talk about houses, talk about people working, we want to talk about what it means to the future there. markets, tracie said futures has gotten as bad as 9/11. now dow down about 300 points. >> at one point it was down 800, 900. >> something like that. >> overall, a lot to look at

with the economy. >> you imagine you'll see peaks and valleys in the months to come. scott 2450u67. let's talk about a local race right now. >> looking at a major race in silicon valley. ro khanna is on track to beat incumbent mike honda for the 17th congressional district seat. with 77% of precincts reporting, ro khanna is winning with 60% support. honda coming in with 40%. khanna lost to honda two years ago but gained more vots during the primary this time around. the district covers the heart of silicon valley from cupertino, north san jose to hayward. >> kamala harris will be california's next senator. as you see, she won very convincingly, up against another democrat from southern california, representative loretta sanchez. harris won with 63%. harris is replacing senator

restrictions. you must be 21 years of age to purchase and smoke weed. recreationally the amount you can possess is limited to 28.5 grams. you can also grow and have up to six pot plants. you won't be able to smoke anywhere. you won't be able to smoke in public places. fines are possible. if you toke up while driving, boating or flying. pot retailers won't be able to advertise on television. the state will be able to put a 15% excise tax on the sale of weed, in addition to a cultivation tax on brothers of almost $10 an houns. that's expected to raise roughly about a billion dollars a year for the golden state. live in berkeley, bob redell for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. for a closer look at some of the other ballot measures, here is kris sanchez. >> we talked with people who say because of the number of issues on the california ballots, many of them studied for a week or

more. three of those involve the issues of gun control -- rather the death penalty -- wrong graphic. let's start with that one, 54% said in to proposition 62 which would repeal the death penalty. more people say yes to prop 66 which would speed up the death penalty process with 51% voting in favor -- rather, 97% all in. it looks like this one is going to pass. school funding passed early and it passed easily, 62% of voters said yes to prop 55 which extends a temporary personal income tax for 12 more years. this will generate funding for k-12 years by taxing people who make $250,000 or more. and a mixed bag for the two propositions related to plastic bags. voters said no to proposition 65 which would have redirected the money you pay when you buy a

bag, 51% said no. voters said yes to proposition 67 which is a statewide ban on single use plastic bags. that one passing by 52% of the vote. coming up in the next half hour, we'll update the numbers for the measures on gun control, the redevelopment of the vallco mall in cupertino and the three sugary beverage taxes that some of our friends and neighbors are deciding as well. kris, thank you very much for keeping track of all that. we're not done yet. >> turning to proposition 58 this morning, this preserves the requirement that public schools makes sure students become proficient in english. >> and authorizes school districts to establish dual language emersion programs. that passed by a wide margin, 72% approval. >> san francisco voters approved measure q which bans tents on public sidewalks in the city. city workers will be allowed to move tents from the street with 24 hours' notice as long as people in those tents are

offered shelter or a ticket out of town so they can stay with family or friends. >> 53% of voters said yes to measure q, 100% reporting in. that issue has been resolved. let's get to weather and traffic together. a little bit of fog along the coastline this morning. something to watch out for commuters as well. >> we're seeing the coast a rough area for the commute and in terms of the surf, the weather warning of the morning is the high surf. wave heights up to almost 20 feet at times. just off the coast of half moon bay and santa cruz pd and look at those numbers, 18-foot wave heights offshore. this means breakers through the morning could be above 25 feet in those favored spots like pillar point around half moon bay. in san francisco wave heights of 14 feet. high surf advisory through 6:00 this evening. let's talk about visibility. not that good around santa cruz. you see quarter mile visibility. you see nap that down to a half mile. the dublin camera and the tri-valley starting to pick up

thick fog, too. morning temperatures, light jacket weather for places like san jose, only 56 degrees. chilly 40s around the north bay. 49 degrees in santa rosa. san francisco actually 57 degrees, not too much in the way of fog. san jose riert now, fog starting to set up east of downtown right now. 56 degrees. should see temperatures climbing by 20 degrees warmer than that later today. upper 70s around san jose. close to 80 around gilroy. despite the patchy fog, should see temperatures in the upper 70s, mid 70s closer to concord and antioch. temperatures in the low to mid 70s, near 70 in downtown san francisco and north bay temperatures, once the low clouds break up, hazy sunshine, highs in the 70s. the two chances of rain ahead, week one of that for saturday, maybe a drizzle around the north bay. skies clear the rest of the weekend. best chance for rain comes up around tuesday, specifically tuesday afternoon. you'll begin to see the changes play out in the seven-day

forecast fords the end of next week. rain totals for the weekend, not much there except in sonoma county. as we head into tuesday, looks like that's when rain makes a comeback. the seven-day forecast will have cooling temperatures for the weekend, mostly dry except in the far north bay early saturday. tuesday we should see a pattern shift back into rain early next week. moving quickly through the commute, we had the earlier car fire reported cleared from the sunol area. showing the south bay and peninsula, nothing unusual. we'll talk about the times in a second. i have a big slowdown westbound highway 4 approaching bailey, a crash still in the lanes. the tow truck that has to move the vehicles, there may be four involved, it's still stuck in the backup. we're tracking that. if you're coming from the northeast portion of our maps. meanwhile over here toward the castro valley y, we have a crash north 238 near east 14th near the off-ramp causing more backup. that's wooif you see a longer travel time here. up to six, seven minutes for the

short portion of 238. keep that in mind as well. that will be an issue as you're trying to get over 880 and the tri-valley. in the south bay, no real delays, 18 minutes from 85, where 101 splits with 85 heading toward guadalupe parkway. we're picking up the volume. the slower drive off the castro valley y. the span is clear. we have crime news to report after a violent home invasion in san rafael on mount muir court less than a mile from the loek ld elementary school, dixie elementary just after midnight yesterday. the sheriff's office says three men got into the home from an unlocked door. one was carrying a gun. the other had a baseball bat. the suspects rounded up the family, stole their cash, electronics and jewelry and then got away. we're told one robber hit the homeowner with a bat, fortunately he was not seriously hurt. 150,000 missing books in the san francisco library wants them back. people have checked out the

back here in the bay area, looks like san jose voters will approve measure e which supporters call the opportunity to work initiative. it requires employers to offer more workers to part-time workers before hiring new ones. a little more than half of the pre sengts reporting, it's winning by nearly two-thirds margin. disruption at the polls, and over what? burnt toast. a fire alarm went off yesterday morning at the snar county registrar's office as volters began to roll into the polls. election staff and voters stopped what they were doing. they walked outside to the parking lot and the cause turned out to be burnt toast in a nearby office that triggered the alarm. >> this is pretty uncommon. we've never, ever had a fire alarm come on during election day. >> 20 minutes later the building was cleared, everyone filed back in. most people waited it out and returned to finish voting. 5:57. election day in the bay area came with a few glitches.

our investigative unit uncovered problems in alameda county. at the transit lobby in oakland, workers say a ballot counting machine broke down for hours. they had to resort to old-fashioned lock boxes to secure the vote. similar problems were reported in aur locations in alameda county where backup systems were put in place. 5:58, some developing news from our vittive unit, a federal judge is siding with san francisco in a lawsuit that airbnb filed against the city. hope sharing companies like airbnb could soon face hefty fines and possible criminal penalties if they allow users to post listings that aren't registered with the city. airbnb sued san francisco to block the law calling it unconstitution unconstitutional. yesterday a federal judge denied the move. right now san francisco only issues penalties to individual host, not the actual online companies. this decision could soon change that, but the judge is still asking both sides to provide additional information at a
