we just had an election, so we know it's november. >> obviously. >> it doesn't feel like november. it's like faux vember. >> we're activating the weather time machine. temperatures today climbing into the 80s in parts of the area. watching out for patchy fog in a pu spots. down to 49 degrees. in livermore, 56 in san jose, palo alto 55 degrees. 59, no fog in san francisco right now. this is the time machine we're talk act. 80 degrees in san jose, the average high is only 66 this time of year. 73 in san francisco, 76 in santa cruz. >> as far as the traffic flows, it's moving well. this over here, the bay bridge, there's also the fog registering similar to yesterday. we're looking at interstate 80 as we take a live look. the crash over toward treasure island. crews quickly got there. we showed you the flashing

lights. that crash has cleared. the slowing on the approach has rippled. it will continue to dissipate over the high-rise and the incline. back to you. we have breaking news out of pennsylvania where at least within officer is dead, another in the hospital after they were shot early this morning. we're just learning those officers were ambushed. the gunman is actually still on the loose. the shooting happened about 1:00 this morning in cannonsburg about 20 miles southwest of pittsburgh. investigators say the officers were responding to a domestic violence call. schools in the area have been shut down. we'll, of course, continue to update the story for you all morning long. last night chaos played out in the streets of oakland. this was a very similar scene to what we saw in other parts of the country as weld for a second straight night, all of this in response to who is going to be our new commander-in-chief. "today in the bay's" pete suratos with us with a closer look at the aftermath. pete, looking behind you, broken windows and fires set in the

streets. >> reporter: good morning. there's broken glass pretty much everywhere in this area. we're limited to show where we're at on broadway avenue because there's a lot of language not suitable for television spray painted on the buildings. 30 arrests were made according to oakland pd in these protests and three officers were injured. i want to show you some of that new video. you see there are police cars getting smashed and you see there's fires being set in the streets. this started last evening when more than 7,000 protest, according to oakland police, they had to deploy teargas to clear the rounds. police say they were assaulted with rocks, bottles, fireworks and even molotov cocktails. smaller groups of protesters vandalizing businesses around downtown. i want to point out, this is a vacant building we're next to. let's go ahead and look at

protests in san francisco. much more peaceful in the castro with hundreds gathering to declare trump is not their president. many saying they fear the progress made on civil rights may be lost in a trump presidency. >> people threw the baby out with the bath water here. they risked everything on the total unknown. >> back to those oakland protests. we know oakland fire and police extinguished about 40 fires just last night. we want to show you another look of this damage between 17th and telegraph avenue. city crews passing by all morning. we expect them to handle this cleanup process pretty much throughout the whole day. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> hopefully the protests will calm down. what is next for the president elect? donald trump working with

advisers, selecting his cabinet and making some 4,000 political opinion points. the top 50 positions are traditionally announced before thanksgiving. after delivering his acceptance speech, donald trump spent hours on the phone fielding calls of congratulations from world leaders in what was described as a phone conversation, mexico's president will sit down with trump before his inauguration in january. today president obama will meet with donald trump for the first time since the election. we'll have a live report from washington coming up in ten minutes. as you were talking about, very split reactions over the november election. some people in the country expressing grief over the results. others celebrating a victory. lilly haas and rick oltman always believed he would be our next commander-in-chief, even if there was a lot of public

haskel. livermore police responded to the 5300 block of hill flower drive for report of an assault with a deadly weapon. when police arrived on scene, they found two female victims with stab wounds. the suspect had fled the scene. haskel's 85-year-old grandmother died from her injuries. his 62-year-old mother had non-life-threatening injuries. police found haskel about a mile away. again, they're still trying to determine a motive in the stabbing. live in livermore, sharon katsu katsuda, "today in the bay." >> 5:06 right now. police in san jose state are reportedly investigating a violent attack on a woman who was wearing a hijab at the time. the woman was walking in the west garage when a man came up from behind, pulled on the hijab

a hard enough to choke her. police are trying to determine if the attack was random or a hate crime. alameda police say the possible victim and his parents decided not to press charges. investigators say during a match last month between berkeley high and encino high, a berkeley student reportedly touched or grabbed an opponent's genital area. a police spokesperson says the case is considered closed. concerns in the north bay is closing caltran to close part of a commuter lot for the next eight days. the lot is located onshore line highway and highway 1. the king tides are making a return this week. high tide is supposed to exceed 6.5 feet there. at 5:07, watching the coastal forecast. wave heights still offshore, 11 to 12 feet. high surf advisory for p most of

the coast. some of the larger breakers up to 18 feet at times. if you head to the beaches today, expect temperatures around the mid 70s, santa clara valley, saratoga could see highs today in the low 80s. tomorrow we'll see more clouds, a dry day in the bay area. a few early morning showers and skies clear around lunchtime. dry finish to the weekend on sunday and a much better chance of rain and cooler temperatures returning on tuesday night. >> over here we're good for the south bay and peninsula and across most of your bridges. we want to talk about the tri-valley where we have slowing out of the altamont pass. let me show you the bay bridge as well. we've been tracking a little slowing. now we're just about to typical speed westbound, the earlier crash cleared at treasure island. back to you.

"today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live in washington. clearly focus is shifting here from politics to preserving our country. good morning. >> reporter: exactly, sam. from politics to governing which is something donald trump has never done. he comes into the white house today to get some instruction and guidance from president obama on how do you set up a brand new administration. >> i say it is time for us to come together as one united people. >> reporter: that begins today with the extraordinary image many thought would never happen. billionaire, now president elect donald trump and his wife melania side by side with the obamas at the white house this morning for private meetings, the president says its transition team has been preparing for for the last year. >> we are now all rooting for success in uniting and leading the country. >> there's a lot of work to do.

everyone heard the numbers again and again. it sure seemed like hillary clinton would have an easy road to victory. many believed it would be a landslide. one expert explains where the prague knost staters may have been mistaken. >> the trump campaign talked at all times about the hidden vote coming out. it materialized. >> the hidden vote is people who decided to vote for trump but didn't necessarily admit it ahead this time. the polls completely missed what kind of overwhelming turnout there would be. >> president elect trump made a lot of campaign promises. one was a biggie, at least financially. he said he wanted to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure. >> scott mcgrew joins us. people heard sam right, trillion with a t. >> a stimulus like we've never seen before. a thousand thousand thousand thousand dollars on america's infrastructure, paid for by borrowing the trillion dollars. that's going to be an adjustment for republicans who are not used to cheering that kind of

borrowing. bond yields jumped yesterday on the expectation the u.s. government debt would go up and the economy would roar ahead as that money pours into projects. when president obama introduced his similar stimulus plan, the american recovery and reinvestment act, it split along party lines. democrats were for it. republicans were against it. all but three republican senators voted against the last stimulus. in the house 177 house republicans voted against it. it would appear yahoo! knew about the massive hack against it far earlier than anyone outside the company realized. yahoo! was hit by what it calls a state actor. new documents submitted to the government show the workers knew as early as 2014. yahoo! didn't tell verizon anti the hack even as verizon was offering to buy the company. now it appears yahoo! was holding the nfgts back longer than we thought.

a verizon spoke man told "fortune" magazine, quote, we're still evaluating the situation and haven't come to any conclusions. let's check on the news before the bell, landon dowdy is live at cnbc world headquarters. booed morning, landon. >> hi there, scott. good morning to you. wall street could be poised to add to yesterday's strong gains in what was a wild ride of a trading session. stocks went from potential massive losses in the pre market hours of investors digesting the election results to a rally with sectors that could potentially benefit from a trump administration, pharmaceutical ts and financials leading those gains. nikkei jumped 900 points yesterday, rebounded with a thousand-point gain today. europe is higher across the board. some traders point to trump sounding presidential in his victory speech and his campaign pledges to cut taxes and spend on infrastructure. the dow rising 256 points to 18,589, just shy of a record close. the nasdaq up 57 to 5,251.

san francisco, oakland and albany have a one cent per ounce tax. in san francisco distributors have charged the tax. the campaigners say it could raise $14 million for the fund. >> provide a report to the mayor, board of supervisors and the city to describe how the funds were allocated and if they did redwus these ailments we see in our community. >> the tax goes into effect next summer. berkeley was the first city in the u.s. to approve the soda tax back in 2014. when it comes to divisive election day rhetoric, it turns out elementary schools are not immune. >> in salt lake city school districts are looking into reports of bullying among children as young as 5 years old. a father of a mexican student said he heard comments aimed at his son while walking into

a live look this morning as we start out your thursday, the bay bridge, traffic ticking along there. of course, it is all lit up. one of the most beautiful sites that you can see in the bay area. we are getting ready to start off your thursday. thanks so much for joining us, i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> another warm afternoon. what is going on? >> it's not november. >> it is november. >> weatherwise not so much. afternoon we'll see temperatures climbing into the 70ss, and even another chance of reaching 80-degree temperatures. right now a chilly start. it's still november outside. 49 degrees in livermore. looking out for patchy fog. 56 in san jose, 59 degrees to start the day in san francisco. high temperatures today 70s around san francisco and oakland. close to 80 around san jose.

>> looking at no real problems, but tracking two crashes that just came in. fremont southbound around thornton, it looks like it's not a major issue. i have seen slowing develop right here toward union city, a crash reported south 880 at whipple. this is typically where we see our first slowdown anyway. we'll track this. we know the bay bridge toll plaza has the backup because the metering lights are on. the fast track lanes the first to see the slowdown. the earlier crash at treasure island has been cleared with no effect to this morning's commute. back to you. >> we continue to follow breaking news out of pennsylvania this morning where at least one police officer is dead, another in the hospital after they were shot early this morning. we found out earlier this morning that the officers were actually ambushed, and the gunman is still on the loose. the shooting happened about 1:00 this morning in cannonsburg, about 20 miles southwest of pittsburgh. investigators say the officers

"today in the bay's" pete surat suratos has some new bum benumb this morning. >> reporter: the latest numbers from oakland pd, 30 arrests made and three officers who were injured during these protests. we're on broadway avenue between telegraph avenue and 17th. this is just a small example of what we're seeing, plenty of graffiti we can't show on tv because of vulgar language. you see the broken glass.

folks throwing things through windows. you can get a glimpse of the damage we're seeing in the aftermath of these protests. we're showing video that we have. you can see protesters smashing police cars, fires set in the streets. this started at frank villa plaza, started as a peaceful protest and grew to more than 7,000 according to oakland pd. we're showing you an example of some of the businesses vandalized. you can even see the police deploying teargas to clear the crowd. police saying some groups began to assault officers with rocks and bottletion. let's jump over across the bay to show another protest that took place, a much more peaceful one over there in the castro with hundreds gathering in that area to protest the election of donald trump. many of them say they fear the progress made on civil rights during the obama administration may be lost under a trump presidency? >> so much lost here. people threw the baby out with

the bath water here. they risked everything on the total unknown. >> reporter: back to those oakland protests, oakland police and fire distinguished about 30 fires. we've seen crews all morning starting to clean up the damage. we're starting to get another update from oakland pd later this morning. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you very much. post election there's a lot of renewed debate about whether the electoral college should be abolished. donald trump was elected by winning the electoral college, but as you see from the graphic, hillary clinton won the popular vote. now, the electoral college was a system put into place in 1787, and it was designed to give each state fair voting representation. as we mentioned, hillary clinton appears to have pretty easily won the popular vote. you can see the numbers there, clinton gained about 200,000

more votes. larry ger stint says changing the system may not be feasible. >> if we have two, three, four elections in a row where the popular vote guess one way and the electoral vote goes the other, people may require a constitutional amendment. that's a tough thing to do. >> this is the fifth time in our nation's history that the president elect has won the electoral college but not the popular vote. record numbers of mail-in ballots in so many political races. according to the "mercury news" as of yesterday, 39% of the ballots were uncounted in santa clara county. 37% in contra costa county. san mateo county, 28% of the ballots uncounted. in some cases, final vote totals may not be posted until next

month. the post election outrage has some people sparking an online movement to leave the united states and make california its own nation, a calexit. >> there's even a website devoted to the idea called yes california. the group organizing this is planning to get the measure on the ballot in 2018. >> i was talking to my friend about this today and i hope and pray it comes true. >> that's crazy, just beyond imaginable. >> law professors say calexit wouldn't work because it needs a constitutional amendment from congress which would require two-thirds support. >> death penalty opponents are moving quickly to block california's proposition 66 from taking effect. voters narrowly approved that measure. it will speed up death penalty cases by assigning more attorneys and having trial court judges hear some cases. the new lawsuit is asking the state supreme court to issue an injunction.

arguing the law will cost more money, create more confusion in courts and limit the ability to mount proper appeals. california hasn't executed a prisoner since 2006. proposition 64 now makes it legal to smoke marijuana in california. we're now learning the new law delivers something else in the very fine print. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san jose with plor on how this could impact thousands of people. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning, laura. a lot of folks have been looking forward to smoking marijuana legally without repercussions. there are a lot of folks who might be looking forward to the fact that what they did in their past will no longer haunt them. here is how prop 64 is for them as well. hundreds of thousands of people with felony convictions on their record for marijuana offenses could be downgraded to misdemeanors. people are eligible if they were 21 or older at the time of the arrest as long as no children were involved in any of those

charges, and if the amount of the marijuana they had when they were caught was less than an ounce or six plants. for some people this could be life changing, especially when they're looking for a job. >> i no longer have to answer question yes, have i been convicted to the felony. >> you're not getting rid of it entirely, but taking tens of thousands of people saying you're no longer felons under california law. >> reporter: people with questions about a marijuana conviction should contact an attorney. as for anyone who wants to use marijuana legally, bear in mind it immediately became legal to buy and consume marijuana, but only medical marijuana which is sold here at the dispensary behind me is legal to sell. a lot of changes still ahead before 2018. in san jose, chris san chesz, "today in the bay." >> obviously still early november. you know this, in one case it's

already graduation day. >> that's right. you can see in this mooef usely shot video, the chp graduating a new group of canines. today is the day for four hard working pooches and their handlers in sacramento. we've heard they've completed 15 weeks in criminal apprehension and explosives detention. >> in the meantime, supersized dangerous waves hitting our coastline yesterday. take a look at that. those are the aerials from our chopper which captured these huge waves pounding ocean beach in san francisco yesterday afternoon. further south, down in half moon bay, the maverick surf contest, posted this video on facebook. the contest has president started yet. the surfers are practicing getting ready in case the competition is called as we have the month-long window there. at 5:39d, still seeing big waves offshore. wave heights about 11 to 12 feet. breakers up to about 18.

high surf advisory for most of the coastline has brought it down closer to monterey. we'll see the wave heights on the right. temperatures close to 80 in san jose, 76 degrees in the forecast for oakland, 73 for san francisco. half moon bay close to 73 degrees. showers holding off until after midnight friday, mostly for the north bay and should be gone by mid morning saturday and the rest of the weekend. highs in the mid 70s inland sunday into monday. we have a couple of crashes on the nimitz. one at auto mall parkway close to stevenson boulevard, it may be blocking the slow lane. we've seen a lot of slowdowns over the last five minutes. the other crash on the nimitz is south of the san mateo bridge. when you add that slowing past whipple and the debris in lanes, seeing three more minutes for your drive time from 238 down to the dumbarton bridge. this is south of the san mateo bridge for the second crash. there you go. back to you.

at 5:43, seeing clear skies around san jose and the santa clara valley. willow glen, highs approaching 80 around 2:00. >> looking at a slower drive atop your screen. 20 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge. the nimitz southbound has a problem. we'll show you that next. new details this morning with a deadly double shooting in hayward. the victims were 56-year-old jose martin hernandez and 42-year-old rocha both from hayward. the shooting happened near mann avenue and hand core place. witnesses say the shooting stemmed from an argument. no arrests have been made so far. coming up on quarter to 6:00 on thursday. an ex-convict is being charged with killing an oakland city hall security guard, a shooting

that happened on september 14th at the corner of 35th and ocean dale boulevard. he was shot and killed inside his car. police arrested 27-year-old lee jackson iv in connection with that case last thursday. the search continues this morning for a lobster fisherman whose boat capsized off the southern california coast. we have new video from the scene into our newsroom. the fisherman was one of five people on board a 24-foot boat when it was hit by a wave in la jolla. lifeguards rescued four people. the missing fisherman was not wearing a life jacket. police identified a man wanted for harassing an 11-year-old boy in palo alto. officers are not allowed to make an arrest. the incident happened monday afternoon on colorado avenue near middlefield road. the man put the hand shoulder and asked for his name. police identified the suspect using surveillance video. they say they can't arrest the

man because the case may only be a misdemeanor. they're sending the case to the d.a.'s office to see if charges can be filed. marine corps investigators are trying to figure out how two jets collided. both pilots are okay. one of the pilots was able to land at a nearby naval station. the other one ejected safely into the water. that collision comes after another f 18 hornet crashed in the california desert a couple weeks ago. the pilot survived in that case as well. the second story from southern california, dramatic scene in southern california. you see that motorcycle right there? that was a motorcycle-led chase, high speed going on on the highways. it started late last night in los angeles. eventually the biker crashed into the side of the car and was knocked off his bike. that's what ended it.

you see him running. he chucked his helmet and kept going. police were finally able to arrest him shortly after that. we now know the name of the woman hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver in sunnyvale. police are looking for that killer. the accident happened last month on fremont avenue east of sunnyvale saratoga road. 67-year-old ann winter from legislator was hit by a car. she was hospitalized and later died. the driver fled but police are still looking for a white four-door acura tsx. the city of berkeley has a new mayor. he is the kwlouyoungest and fir latino to preside over that city. it's historic. 60% of the population is white. al bates is retiring after almost four decades. he says he's going to fight for equity and social justice. he says his top priorities are expanding affordable housing and raising the minimum wage.

a live look at the white house. you see the american flag flapping there. in about two hours president obama and the first lady are hosting president elect donald trump and his wife melania, expected to talk about trump's transition into office. an alleged theft and stabbing at a south bay walmart. now two people are in custody. police say noel caldron of gilroy and kimberly angeles were confronted outside a morgan hill walmart after allegedly shoplifting. that's when caldron pulled out a knife and stabbed the manager in the forearm. the two suspects took off and were later found and arrested. the manager is expected to fully recover. a bay area deejay is robbed while shopping. police say someone stole her backpack loaded with high tech equipment. this happened on friday at the buffalo exchange.
