>> looks nice right now on the peninsula and in the south bay as far as the travel. the east bay, a horrible drive for the nimitz, adding 25 minutes for your stretch from 238 down into fremont. looks like the crash at stevenson may have cleared from lanes. i see a little recovery on the speeds south of the dumbarton bridge. the earlier crash at whipple cleared to the shoulder to union city. over in the east bay you have a slow drive as well for the upper eastshore freeway, standard build for that section, 25 minutes from highway 4. back to you. an update to breaking news out of pennsylvania this morning where at least one police officer is dead and another is in the hospital after authorities say the two were shot and ambushed early this morning. the gunman is still on the loose. that shooting happened about 1:00 this morning eastern, about 20 miles southwest of pittsburgh. investigators say the officers were responding to a domestic violence call when that shooting happened.

schools in the area were delayed or shut down. we'll bring you new information as soon as we get it into our newsroom. >> now to a developing story, for the second night in a row, tens of thousands of protesters spilled into the streets across the country in response to donald trump's election. some were peaceful. here in oakland, things turned violent quickly. protesters lit businesses on fire, some even throwing molotov cocktails at police officers. >> you heard that right. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joining us live in oakland with a look at the damage left behind. as laura just mentioned, people were throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at police officers? >> reporter: that's right, sam and laura, good morning to you guys. according to october land pd, there were 30 arrests made and three officers injured. we're standing on broadway avenue between 17th and telegraph. this is just an example, i'm

stepping over glass right now. this is one of the buildings that was affected during the protests. we're learning there's actually studios above here right next to the cathedral building in oakland. i want to show you video of protesters smashing police cars and starting fires in the streets. oakland police say this started in downtown oakland, this peaceful protest that grew to about 7,000 protesters and then police deployed teargas to clear the crowd. they're saying some groups began to assault officers with, as you mentioned, rocks, bottles, fireworks, even molotov cocktails. smaller grums vandalized businesses. the building we're in front of has tenants. we spoke to one of them just moments ago. >> so when someone does damage to a building like this, the way it affects me personally, all day i'll be thinking about, wow, another cause that is getting

tainted, poisoned by the message trying to be expressed which is we are in disagreement of what has taken place, but that property damage to go alongside it is targeting the wrong people. >> now, much more peaceful protests happening in the castro in san francisco. hundreds gathering there to declare trump is not their president. many of them fearing the progress made on civil rights during the obama administration could be lost under a trump presidency. >> so much at risk here. people threw the baby out with the bath water here. they risked everything on the total unknown. >> reporter: back to the oakland protests, oak lapd fire and police extinguished about 40 fires during those protests. we expect to see city crews cleaning up damage through out the morning. later this morning we're hoping to get another update from

oakland police. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> 6:04 this morning. in about two hours, president elect donald trump will meet with president obama at the white house to begin the transition of power. yesterday crews began building the stands where the 45th president will take the oath of office on january 20th. president obama says his transition team has been preparing for the last year despite the fact he and trump do not see eye to eye. >> it is no secret that the president elect and i have some pretty significant differences. but remember, eight years ago president bush and i had some pretty significant differences. >> president obama said he wanted to copy his predecessor president bush in a smooth transition of power. this morning's meeting between trump and president obama is set to happen about 8:00 a.m. our time. we'll of course bring you live coverage during the "today" show. >> as people all over the country express grief, some do over the election results.

others are celebrating a victory as it was clearly a very divided election. lilly haas and rick oltman are two trump supporters. they always believed he would be our next commander-in-chief even if there was a lot of backlash. >> in a couple months he'll be sworn in as president. and then we can get to work on the problems that our country has. >> i was hoping that people were going to be more tolerant. >> these two trump supporters hope the violence in the streets will die down soon and hope to attend his inauguration. death penalty opponents are moving quickly to block california's proposition 66 from taking effect. it will speed up death penalty cases by assigning more attorneys and having trial court judges hear some cases. a new lawsuit is asking the state supreme court to issue an injunction, arguing the law will cost more money, creating more

confusion in courts and limit the ability to mount proper appeals. 6:06 right now on your thursday morning. all new, a grandmother is dead and a mother recovering from stab wounds. police say the suspect is a member of their own family. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us live from livermore. you just got an update from police. what are you hearing? >> reporter: that's right, sam. i just spoke with the police sergeant minutes ago. he tells me this is livermore's first homicide this year. this suspect police say has a history of mental illness, identified as 35-year-old tyler haskel. the stabbings happened about 7:30 last night. livermore police responded to the 5300 block of hill flower drive. police arrived on scene and found two female victims with stab wounds. >> we arrived on scene and located two victims.

one was an 85-year-old female and a 62-year-old female who had been stabbed with a kitchen knife from the suspect that fled the scene prior to our arrival. >> reporter: haskel's 85-year-old grandmother died from her injuries. his 62-year-old mother had non-life-threatening injuries. police found haskel about a mile away on baxter road. there's still no word on the motive. live in livermore, sharon katsuda for "today in the bay." >> it's 6:08 right now. santa clara county leaders will look at ways to cover costs for proposed changes to the jail system. the county's finance and government operations committee will meet the afternoon. one item on the agenda, the changes currently imposed for the jail custody policies. reform efforts are taking place

more clouds, rain-free. a few showers mainly in the north bay. the return of rain and schooler more november-like weather early next week. we might see a lighter flow of traffic because of the veterans day holiday for some schools. some parents work from home so they can get out of town a little earlier. on the east bay that doesn't mean anything. we have a heavier commute here because of a couple of crashes. south 880 around stevenson has cleared. the one at whipple may be blocking part of your slow lanes. that's a lot of slowing off 238 towards the dumbarton bridge. on the dumbarton bridge over toward the eastern side we have a crash around the toll plaza area. it's in lanes, counter commute, but nonetheless, it's dark in the area. your south bay drive times are holding steady. first burst of traffic with slowing around highway 87. that did clear up. the second burst starting in 15 minutes. back to you. this has been kind of a mystery after the election,

6 kw:13, a warm afternoon i store in campbell, highs approaching 80 degrees. we'll see high clouds with a mix of sunshine during the afternoon. donald trump's looming presidency apparently will not get in the way of a courtroom appearance this month or next in southern california. that's where a class action lawsuit will soon be heard against trump and his defunct trump university. today the judge holds a hearing on jury instruction and what kind of evidence will be allowed. it's possible trump will be asked to testify. the trial is set to begin november 28th. >> some people wondering how did pollsters get this so strong. heading into election day, everyone heard the same numbers over and over again, considered a forgone conclusion that it

would not be a close race, that hillary clinton would glide to victory. the exact opposite proved to be true. one experts explains where the prognosticators may have gotten it wrong be the trump campaign talked about the hidden vote and it materialized. >> the hidden vote he's talking about is people who decided to vote for trump but didn't want to admit it ahead of time. in many cases the polls completely missed what kind of overwhelming turnout there would be among trump supporters. business news now, and hs gone for now forego pro. as we first reported yesterday, the company is recalling one of its newest products. it just came out, the drone camera. the drone called the karma has been on the market for les than a month. go pro is recalling it. the problem is the drone can lose power mid air and fall from the sky. if you have one, you can get a full refund but not a replacement. so far 2500 drones have been sold and it's unclear if they'll

thousand point turn around. two categories help with those stocks. anything involved with mr. trump's trillion dollar stimulus like caterpillar and republicans plan to dump the affordable health care act benefiting big pharma. chief operating officer of twitter is leaving the company, adam bain, will be replaced by anthony noto. anthony is also notable for in his early days at twitter, kind of confusing direct messaging -- >> oh, that's the guy. i remember that. >> a wonderful businessman, terrific human being. early days of twitter didn't quite get it. i don't know if you saw the "snl" with fake donald trump saying he had a secret way of messaging. i think he felt the same way, he sent that to everybody on planet earth. >> he needs a one-on-one on how to use twitter. boy, supersized and a dangerous waves hitting our coastline. did you see this?

take a look. our nbc bay area chopper capturing some of the video of the big waves pounding ocean beach in san francisco yesterday afternoon. so down in half moon bay, maverick surf contest posted this video on facebook. the contest has not started yet. surfers are out practicing in case that competition is called, they've got their window now open. now they've just got to call it. the ladies taking to the surf this year for the maverick come ticks. >> it's nice, to warm up, 10, 20 foot waves. >> sets to 25. >> 20 feet or higher? >> higher. when you get the offshore winds close to low tide, 30 to 40-foot bases. huge, the green monsters. >> looking at temperatures in the 40s and 50s outside.

the post election outrage has some californians sparking an online movement to leave the united states and make craft its own nation, a calexit, a takeoff from brexit, britain's exit from the european union. there's a website devoted to the idea called yes california. the group is trying to get it on the 2018 ballot. >> i was talking to my friend about this today. i hope and pray it comes true. >> that's crazy. that's just beyond imaginable. >> law professors say calexit wouldn't work because it needs a constitutional amendment from congress with two-thirds support. a hollywood a-lister is getting a red carpet treatment in an area known for its red and white lines. >> cheers to that. the area being napa valley. matthew mcconaughey is receiving

police officers with molotov cocktails. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from oakland with a look at some of the damage left behind. pete, we understand several officers were hurt as well? >> reporter: yes, three officers injured and oakland police say there were 30 arrests made. we're on broadway between telegraph and 17th. we're in front of one of these buildings, the cathedral building. you see the damage here, broken windows. you see the glass shattered everywhere. there's plenty of graffiti. we can't show you a lot of it because of the obscenities. we'll also show you some of the video, the new video that we have of protesters smashing police cars and starting fires in the streets. oakland police say this protest started in downtown oakland last evening, about 7,000 protesters eventually showed up. police even deploying teargas to

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with how this can change the lives of thousands of people with a criminal record, kris. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam, good morning laura. a lot of folks were focused on passing proposition 64, looking forward to the day they could smoke marijuana freely without legal consequence. a lot of folks were focused on looking backwards, looking at the impact marijuana convictions had on people's lives, their ability to get jobs, to get financial aid in college. that is one of the reasons why proposition 64 had such broad

support. hundreds of thousands of people with felony convictions on their records could be downgraded to miss means. some folks with misdemeanors could have those removed from their records outright. people are eligible if they were 21 or older at the time of the arrest as long as the charges don't involve chirnl and the amount they were caught with is less than an ounce or six plants in their home. for some people, that could mean getting a job, getting financial aid going forward. >> no longer do i have to answer yes to the question have i been convicted of a felony. >> you're overturning a sentence, but taking tens of thousands of people and saying you're no longer felons under california law. >> reporter: anyone with a question about a marijuana conviction should definitely contact an attorney. i'll tell you i am in the a lawyer. as for anyone who wants to use

marijuana legally, it immediately became legal to have an ounce of marijuana and to smoke it, but it is still not legal to sell it unless you're selling under a medical marijuana dispensary license and you have a doctor's note. the legal sale of marijuana won't happen until 2018. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it's 6:38 right now. record numbers of mail-in ballots from so many political races leaving bay area registrars with hundreds of thousands of uncounted votes. 39% uncounted in santa clara county. 37% in contra costa. san mateo, 28% uncounted. final vote totals won't be posted until next month. police in san jose university are investigating a violent attack on a woman

wearing a hee jijab. a man came up from behind the woman, pulled on the hijab hard enough to choke her and sent her to the ground. the man then took off. this happened mid afternoon on election day. campus police are trying to figure out if the attack was random or was a hate crime. we now know the names of two men shot and killed this weekend in hayward. the victims were 56 injured jose martin hernandez and 32-year-old row chez. witnesses say the shooting stemmed from an argument. no arrests have been made. >> continuing coverage. we have details on a reported sexual assault that happened during a high school water polo game. the possible victim and his parents decided not to press charges. investigators say during a match last month a berkeley student reportedly touched or grabbed an opponent's genital area. a police spokesperson says that

down all lanes, just reopened the left two lanes. sweeper trucks will be called. that's unusual for the southbound direction. the northbound flow through the south bay typical for san jose and silicon valley. atypical, this big backup off the dublin grade, westbound 580 at redwood road. we have possibly three lanes blocked there. debris across lanes. sweeper trucks have to head here as well. this could be a while. but it keeps things eetzier drive through the castro valley y. an easier flow of traffic toward the bay bridge into downtown oakland. 13 minutes from marina to broadway. a pretty nice drive. back to you. 6:41. coming up, new developments in an oakland nightclub shooting where several people were hurt. two people have been charged. police say this case is far from over. on a lighter note, all the single ladies and gentlemen in china excited by an up coming

2:00 today. a slow drive for the eastshore freeway. 580 is an easier drive, 21 minutes from 238 because of the crash holding folks up from castro valley. we'll update that coming up. we now know the name of a woman hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver. the accident happened on fremont east of saratoga road. 67-year-old ann winter was hit by a car. she was hospitalized and later died. the driver fled. police are looking for a four-door acura tsx. two people charged in the oakland shooting that left eight people injured. 28-year-old brandon simpson and 20-year-old kahindra riley. one of the victims is still in critical condition. police say the shooting started

as an argument. officers are looking for more people involved. now a couple of wild nearly deadly situations out of southern california to tell you about. let's start here off the coast of shaig where marine corps investigators are trying to figure out how two fighter jets ended up colliding. both pilots are okay. two f/a-18 hornets collided off the coast of san diego. one of the pilots was able to land the plane at a nearby naval station. the other' jeshlgted safely into the water. that collision comes after another f/a-18 hornet crashed in the california desert a couple weeks ago. the pilots survived in that case as well. a dramatic scene out of southern california as a motorcycle rider led police on a high-speed chase. it started late last night in l.a. the biker was weaving in and out of traffic during that chase. eventually he crashed into the side of a car and was knocked

ntsa says proper use of child restraints has gone down in the last three years. nearly half of 4 to 7-year-olds are not strapped in correctly in the car. a lot of kids ages 1 to 3 are being graduated to booster seats before they're ready. medical news now. there's a good chance you have expired meds in your medicine cabinet. a lot of people are wondering is it okay to use them. we're talking about over-the-counter drugs like pain relievers or cough medicine. experts say medical stu difficults haven't proven whether it's o safe to use expired drugs, but they say it's best not to risk it. >> we start to worry about loss of potency over time. the problem is among health care as a whole, it's not known as safe or effective for how long those medications are after their expiration date. >> experts say you should not take expired prescription medication either. that could do more harm than

herere t at 6:57, welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories on nbc bay area. >> getting you caught up, breaking news out of pennsylvania, a police officer is dead and a second is in the hospital after they were both shot in an ambush-style attack early this morning. the gunman is still on the run. the shooting happened about 1:00 a.m. eastern time, about 20 miles southwest of pittsburgh in cannonsburg. the officers were responding to a domestic violence call at the time when they were shot. schools in the area have been shut down. an east bay woman is behind bars accusing of stabbing his

mother and grandmother. police investigated 35-year-old tyler haskel, investigators say he stabbed his moth and grandmother with a kitchen knife. haskel's grandmother died. his mother is expected to be okay. police say haskel suffers from mental illness. for the second night in a row, tens of thousands of protesters spilled into the streets all over the country, all of it in response to the election. some of the protests were peaceful. in oakland, however, as you see from this video, people jumping on police cruisers, destroying businesses, smashing windows, even businesses being lit on fire and molotov cocktails being tossed directly at police officers. three officers were injured. police in total make 30 arrests. they issued 11 citations in connection with the violent protests. >> a live look at the white house this morning. in about an hour, president obama and the first lady will
