"today in the bay" starts right now. >> good friday morning. thank you very much for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon, let's get straight to the frad forecast because after friday comes saturday. >> the weather looks nice, almost a rewind of summer-like temperatures. close to 80 in a few spots. looking at highs that should approach the mid 70s. before we get there, look out for patchy fog in a few spots including the tri-valley this morning. 53 in livermore, 56 in san jose. san francisco close to 60 to start the day. we'll see numbers in the upper 60s around san francisco into san jose. highs in the mid 70s, we have seen a lot of patchy fog around stoneridge into pleasanton this morning. >> we see some more fog near discovery bay.

rob is talking about livermore, this whole area, anywhere down the 680 corridor as well. we'll track that. want to show you something off 68. the box truck is over on the shoulder. chp was there for a while. it left the scene before our commercial break. the lonely truck at the split. 101 right here, 680/280 ramp there. it's not well lit. keep that in mind. but also not well traveled. a light commute southbound through the area. 5:01 this morning. breaking overnight, a gruesome scene in the east bay. three people killed in what police are calling a triple homicide. traib's damian trujillo in the highland neighborhood of oakland. investigators already looking into a fire there. >> reporter: it's still unclear how the relationship is between the triple homicide and the fire, whether they're related or if it happened separately. investigators are still here at the scene. it's an active crime scene on

dunbar drive in oakland off 98th avenue in east coke land. the call came in just after midnight. firefighters arrived. they had a garage on fire in one of the homes. that's extinguished that fire and discovered three bodies inside. investigators again are here at the scene. they're using three dimensional equipment to map out the area for investigative purposes. one person is in custody right now. police are questioning that person over at police headquarters. we're waiting for a spokesperson for oakland pd to give us a little more information on what may have led up to this incident here on dunbar drive. as soon as we have that information, we'll bring it over to you. it looks like police will be here for a while processing this crime scene. we are live in oakland, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> overnight protests quickly turned violent amid nationwide demonstrations. these sights becoming all the

more familiar. demonstrations out of portland where rioters smashed store windows, lit fires in the streets, a total of 29 people were arrested. "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us live in oakland where a similar scene played out here again last night. it comes on the heels of mayor schaaf's plea for peaceable protests. >> reporter: last night much more peaceful than the two nights before. you can see behind me boarded-up windows. some of the windows were not broken. they were boarded up as a precaution for last night. unfortunately the destruction was minimal. the biggest inconvenience was this scene right here. you can see protesters, quite a large group of them, trying to get on 580 in oakland. at first, chp was able to stop them in spite of having bottles thrown at them. no officers were hurt. then around 9:30 last night, some of the protesters got out

of 580 at telegraph, shutting down both directions of traffic. there were two arrests. last night's protests started earlier in the evening. several hundred people out there as opposed to several thousand the night before. they had a rally for a couple of hours at frank ogawa plaza before marching down broadway. again, the vandalism from what we understand was at a minimum. their message let people know they are upset with the election of donald trump. >> i need positive change. i need to know my future is secure and i need to know i can feel safe in my community. i feel like trump just wants hate and wants to destroy that. >> you'll recall in nights leading up to last night there were a number of windows that were breck en here in the downtown area, hence the reason you have these boarded up sections where we're standing. i understand last night, the

destruction was kept to a minimum. live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." at 5:04 #notmypresident was the rallying cry. students walked out of classrooms in protest of the election. the latest anti trump message, almost 300 milpitas students rallied on the field with their principal who described president elect trump with a curse word. the move got him student applause but placed him on administrative leave. >> we don't support trump, we don't support his vision or his views. >> there were also walk-outs in concord and pleasant hill. in san francisco, around 2,000 students from ten high schools merged together. most have been peaceful except for one student-teacher altercation in concord.

>> we'll continue our coverage of the political protests on our website. we've posted videos and photos of demonstrators that our viewers have been sending to us. you can join the conversation at nbcbayarea.com. as you were saying? >> as i was saying, this could be hard to believe. there has been another security breach at sjc. a trespasser made his way into the airfield. jerry hyde, that man, somehow walked onto the restricted airfield about 1:00 yesterday morning. the airport says that's where he ran into an electrician working on the airfield and police were called. this comes after several upgrades to security that include higher fencing. this is now the sixth time that somebody got past security at the airport in the last year and a half. helping homeless veterans in san francisco. mayor ed leanne nounsed 75 new homes will be dedicated to veterans this fall and winter.

according to the "san francisco examine examiner", the city has housed more than 700 homeless veterans. there's still hundreds more in need of a place. this is part of a larger housing effort in san francisco. there's 30 units now available at the crown hotel for veterans. there's a lot of ways to honor our great veterans throughout the bay area. in san jose, a breakfast for military families and later the united veterans council is hosting a ceremony and parade downtown. in milpitas, a ceremony at city hall at 9:00. marin county is celebrating with musical performances at 9:30 at the veterans memorial auditorium in san rafael. at a:07, the weather shaping up nicely other than patchy fog to start, bay and inland locations, in the oohs and 60s at 9:00. we'll see inland spots most li cloudy skies by about 7:00 this

evening. then early tomorrow morning, a chance of a little bit of drizzle or light rain around the peninsula and north bay. today, mid 70s around san jose. upper 60s in san francisco, 2 in oakland. there's a slight chance of a few showers early on saturday. the rest of the weekend is warmer again as we head towards sunday. >> rob, a smooth flow of traffic at 5:08. obviously early hours here. a number of incidents on the chp blotter. all of them out of freeway lanes. fog in brentwood and discovery bay. also talking about the 680 corridor between concord and the dublin interchange. over here more fog registering for 101 toward mill valley and san rafael. no major issues as far as travel times go. we're talking about the tri-valley, 20 minutes from grant line toward the dublin interchange. a little flowing in the construction zone. 37 trains reported on time. b.a.r.t. is running on time this morning after delays last night. >> good to hear on time there, mike. over here, the congested streets

of san francisco, one in particular that runs through the spine of the city is about to get more crowded. construction starts today on van ness avenue which is undergoing a major overall. it starts now. crews will be at the intersection of van ness and broadway reconfiguring the southbound lanes. the streets eventually two southbound lanes and two turn lanes from van ness on to broadway. over the weekend left turns on van ness will be removed from all but three intersections. that project is expected to finish at some point in 2019. a public display of unity. how donald trump spent his first day in washington since being elected president next. an unexpected sighting, the surprise run-in one heartbroken mother had with a presidential candidate.

incited by the media are protesting. that's unfair. >> women are wondering what a donald trump presidency will mean for their health care. on the campaign trail donald trump said repealing the affordable health care act is a top priority. now that he's president elect, some are urging women to get to the doctor before inauguration day. planned parenthood says its phones are ringing, worried about a cut in funding. others are worried about their cover california insurance. >> we've received calls from clients who are concerned about what does this mean for them and is that going to happen tomorrow. >> planned parenthood says despite whatever happens with the affordable care act and its federal funding, their doors will remain open. >> president elect trump also plans to get rid of some of the protections put in place after the banking crisis. >> scott mcgrew, one of the targets is the consumer

protection financial bureau. >> that agency has done a lot lately, but republicans have been wary from the start. it's the one that fined wells fargo for cheating more than a million customers by setting up phantom credit cards and checking accounts, accounts they did not want and in many cases did not know they have. >> wells fargo execs say tellers did complain to the bank's internal ethics line but those calls were, quote, mishandled. mark zuckerberg is defending facebook over accusations the social network misled voters. there's been a lot of finger-pointing among democrats about what went wrong. the fake news items that flood facebook one of the things getting the blame. zuckerberg says there are fake news articles on facebook on both sides. if you read this memo

how strong department store jc penney thinks its holiday sales will be. quarterly sales were down .8%. we'll get a read on november's consumer sentiment from the university of michigan. it's expected to show americans are feeling more optimistic about the economy. back over to you. >> landon, thanks. a few people who own new balance speakers are putting them in the trash or toilet, actually setting them on fire to demonstrate their anger at the new balance shoe company. the privately held company sent out a message in support of donald trump and his plans to end free trade agreement. new balance is generally hurt by trade agreements which allows sthar competitors to make shoes in places like vietnam. whether donald trump is right or not about shutting down free trade is an argument we can have for another time n. the meantime, the bottom line for new balance is they use american workers in maine to make shoes. a person who pushes protectionism is going to help new balance and help those americans workers. you can certainly see new

clouds. over to concord and antioch, highs in the mid 70s. low 70s along the peninsula and palo alto. onshore winds keeping half moon bay in the 60s. san francisco increasing high clouds, upper 60s for temperatures. in the north bay, highs in the low 70s. notice the system offshore. that's the source of increasing clouds today, but not much in the way of rain. a bigger impact will be a few isolated showers through the morning. mostly cloudy start to saturday and trending to partly cloudy skies into the afternoon. hour-by-hour tomorrow, a slight chance of an early shower through 9:00, changing over to partly cloudy skies. sunday looks like more shine and temperatures climbing up a little bit more, mid 70s to wrap up a weekend. a dry finish to the weekend. seven-day forecast, stay tuned. wednesday, big drop in temperatures. that looks good forane. making a comeback to the bay area and snow returning to the sierra. >> interesting changes ahead. over here, not a lot of changes going on. that's good news. we just have these older crashes

this morning "nbc bay area responds" to san francisco homeowners on the hook for thousands in city fines because of the short-term rental craze. >> consumer investigator chris chmura is here to lay out a real estate mess. chris? good morning. in san francisco homeowners are required to register with the city when they offer their properties for rent on sites like homeaway or airbnb. not everyone registers. now some landlords are responsible for thousands of dollars in fines because their tenants are breaking the short-term rental law. >> i was unemployed at the time. i couldn't even focus on a job search, i was too consumed with

oakland. >> rob, looking at a smooth flow of traffic. because it is veterans day, a likely flow of traffic for the morning commute. the incidents have all cleared. none of them really blocked lanes. over here eastbound 24, we had a sign hit overnight as well. some sign repair that will go on later as well. it doesn't sound like there's been any activity or slowing we've seen. getting to the bay bridge, a smooth easy drive down the eastshore freeway, 15 minutes down to this mild backup. metering lights on in a few minutes. seeing just the cash lanes now with the backup. an update to breaking news. a deadly discovery in the east bay. authorities are responding to a house fire in oakland. they quickly found themselves investigating a triple homicide. this happened near the oakland coliseum. that's where we find "today in the bay's" damian trujillo who is live at the scene with what we know so far. clearly it's still active there.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are still here at the scene trying to assess what exactly happened here on dunbar drive in oakland. a neighbor did come out a short while ago and said he was, in fact, in the dark as far as what happened, was told to stay away from the crime scene. >> the call came after midnight off 98th avenue and highway 880 in oakland. report of a house fire here. when police arrived, they found three bodies inside of the home. unclear if those folks were actually murdered before the fire started or if it was death as a result of the fire. police are here still assessing the crime sooep. they're collecting evidence. they have a three-dimensional equipment at the scene to try to document the crime scene and make sure they have that for evidentiary purposes. again, not much information other than that coming from the crime scene here. we're waiting for the spokesperson to come out and give us more information as to what may have led to this triple

homicide on dunbar drive. that's the late est from oaklan. i'm damian trujillo for "today in the bay." >> a call for peace in oakland last night. people urging protesters not to vandalize their property. some protesters did get violent again for a third straight night throwing rocks, bottles and fireworks. a group blocked traffic on highway 580. two people were arrested there. the night started out peacefully with 7,000 people protesting donald trump's election. >> i need positive change, i need to know my future is secure and i need to know i can feel safe in my community in oakland in my home. i feel like trump just wants hate and wants to destroy that. >> donald trump is the president. the man said he was going to do this, that and the other for our community. let's give him a chance to do that. >> nicholas alexander, the person you just heard, is a pastor. he stood on the corner, asking

people to stop the violence. protesters also blocked traffic in san jose. this is the scene on highway 87 near sjc. the video shows the traffic mess as the crowd blocked the highway. these protesters eventually marched to the mlk library near city hall. from the streets to bay area schools, thousands of students walked out to protest against thement election results. one demonstration has one south bay principal now on leave. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from milpitas with what he said that has him in hot water. >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. the students don't have school today in observance of the veterans day holiday. for their principal, no work, as you said, because he is on paid administrative leave. fillmore ral less is the one with the megaphone before the

stands there. it was during this rally he used profanity in describing the president elect. the students responded with applause. the administration clearly did not. concord high school academy, there was an altercation between a student and a teacher where witnesses say the student hit the teacher after the teacher slapped the phone out of his hand. the rest of the thousand or so different schools? con stra costa county were peaceful. >> we don't come here to sell drugs, we don't come here to rape anyone. we come here to work and get an education. >> since donald trump won, i don't feel safe being a muslim in this country. >> hundreds of students walked through traffic on the streets of san francisco yesterday. we covered this live and took over oakland mayor libby schaaf's planned protest about the protests and violence in the city the night before. many students have the day off because of the veterans day holiday. they won't be walking off campus or out of class, but we'll have

to wait and see if they mobilize on social media and continue their protests. in milpitas, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." healing is on the way for a nation bitterly divided. many are calling for a day of healing and a reconciliation this sunday. there's an event planned in washington, d.c. and in san jose, the center for spiritual living in willow glen will be participating by broadcasting that event. the san jose event is open to the public. we'll continue our coverage of the transition and the protests throughout the morning as well. on our website, we posted a slideshow of pictures from inside the demonstration. that's all at nbcbayarea.com. it is veterans day, a very special time to stop and remember those who have served our country. >> let's talk about one ceremony happening in san francisco today that's paying special tribute to casualties of the vietnam war. today at 4:00, the american legion is holding a ceremony to rededicate a vietnam plaque. that plaque honoring 163 san francisco men killed during the

vietnam war has been on san francisco's embarcadero for 15 years. over the years the plaque has suffered from weather and vandalism and lack of maintenance. but now it's getting a new home. >> to be able to come here and read that name and say we remember is really important. >> the american legion war memorial commission is having the plaque moved to a more fitting location inside the war memorial building. the plaque has been recast and five new names have been added to it bringing the total to 168. >> the time right now 5:37. all outdoor events honoring our veterans, things like nice weatherwise. not as warm as. once the patchy fog clears, a dry day. changes tomorrow morning. highs about 75 degrees in san jose, 72 in oakland, upper 60s today around san francisco. tomorrow, a chance of a light rain shower, very early, main any peninsula northward. partly cloudy saturday afternoon. watch out for wednesday, big

good morning palo alto. starting with temperatures in the low 50s, know 70s this afternoon with increasing high clouds, part of a slight rain chance as we head through the start of the weekend. a look at that coming up in five minutes. greetings to the north bay where highway 37 shows a little slowing from highway 29. that's typical about this time. fog not playing a part in the commute. you will find it as well as in the tri-valley. across the bridges, ten minutes

to the bay bridge, no metering lights yet. 5:42 right now. the death of musician leonard cohen, his death announced on his facebook page last night. cohen's most famous song "hallelujah" has been recorded hundreds of times. he moved to new york from canada in 1966 to break into the music business. he was a celebrated poet at the time. before long, critics were comparing him to bob dillon for his song writing. learning more about a deadly street race in santa clara that happened in broad daylight. this is video of hat the scene looked like afterwards. we learned juan campo was the driver. witnesses report the cars were going 100 miles an hour. the car later crashed into a tree and then a wall. police are still looking for the

driver of a silver acura tsx or tl that was also racing. a retired oakland police captain now facing charges in the wide ranging police sex abuse scandal. 81-year-old al peridine is accused of paying to have sex with a woman at the center of the scandal when she was under age. again, he's 81. a total of 12 oakland officers and 11 richmond officers have been disciplined for their involvement in that scandal. charges are expected to be filed against two people accused of stealing from a patient at a walnut creek hospital. this is surveillance video of that incident. it happened last week at john muir hospital. you can see the patient and his wife, they left their room to go for a walk. two other people are seen near the room, one of them went inside. police say he stole wallets and a kindle. a hospital worker spotted the suspect in the hospital a few

days later. they were arrested but are out of custody this morning and now are awaiting charges. at 5:44. getting new images of the horror that unfolded during a mass shooting at the pulse night club. body camera video from law enforcement officers shows chaos as victims poured out of the club. >> my friends are very injured. >> they're coming. >> body cameras show officers rushing in with gurneys. the video shows tense moments near where the shooter was holding hostages. 49 people were killed in that horrific massacre. firefighters in southern california keeping an eye on hot spots after this inferno broke out in san diego. it happened near the san diego riverbed and burned right by a neighborhood. thankfully no structures were threatened and no one was evacuated. a tractor-trailer to blame for this brush fire in l.a.

another security breach at sjc. this time a trespasser on the airfield. police say this man, jerry hyde somehow made his way onto the restricted airfield around 1:00 yesterday morning. the airport says that's where he ran into an electrician working on the airfield, and that electrician called airport police. the breach comes after several upgrades to security at the airport including higher fences. >> in many areas we didn't increase it to 11 feet, far exceeding federal standards. we even increased the mesh sheets on the line so it's difficult to scale. >> this is the sexth time someone got past security in the last 18 months. our investigative unit is exposing widespread abuse when it comes to certain evictions in san francisco. >> even if you've never been
