"today in the bay" starts right now. a very good monday morning to you. foggy start to our day. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. is there a fog advisory? >> a dense fog advisory. parts of the south bay. everywhere this morning, you're seeing visibility drop to 1/4 mile or less at times. some of the worst fog more downtown san jose. peninsula and tri-valley seeing a few breaks in the clouds. the super moon setting off to the west this morning.

if you're lucky to be away from the fog, you can see the super moon setting. visibility bad in the santa clara valley. in san francisco, high 60s to low 70s. rain-free today. that's about to change. the timing on the few storms on the way in a few minutes. >> you mentioned the fog. that is an issue. we expect that in areas of the north bay. drivers are waiting for that. what is not as bad this morning, it is the south bay where this will be unexpected for many folks driving through silicon valley. we'll give you a live look at palo alto. this is unusually tough to see. this is northbound 101. that's the only thing you see that ikea, continuing up the peninsula. there is not as much up by sfo. you had something overnight there. >> what we are hearing fog was not a factor here. we are learning that one man is

dead after being hit while walking on highway 101 right by sfo. this happened just at 1:00 in the northbound direction close to the long-term parking sign there. two cars struck that person, an uber and taxi. investigators say the victim was walking in one of the lanes. no one was arrested and the accident is not supposed to impact the morning commute. search is on for a man who fired at two san jose police officers. given everything that is happening with attacks on police officers, another possible attempt here. both officers were not hurt. the officers were walking on a routine patrol 7:30 last night near ripley drive in san jose east of downtown. they were trying to talk to a group of boys or men. most of that group ran away. they dispersed. one turned around and started shooting at police officers. the officers did not fire back.

we'll bring you a live report as they continue their search. 5:02. the trump transition is already in full swing. this morning people are talking about his first interview since winning the election. today in the bay tracie potts with more on what trump said. >> reporter: the trump transition announced reince priebus will serve as chief of staff and steve bannon who headed the trump campaign will become chief strategist. >> they'll both have big roles as well as they should. it was a very small core senior team. >> president-elect trump admits he won't completely replace obamacare. >> are you going to make sure people with preconditions are still covered? >> yes. it happens to be one of the strongest assets. also with the children living with their parents for an extended period. we'll try to keep that.

>> reporter: republicans say part of trump's wall with mexico could be a fence. and that millions of immigrants will not be quickly deported. >> we are focused on securing the border. >> reporter: as protests continue, democrats are concerned. >> i caution anyone who in their protest becomes the very thing that they're protesting against, meaning turning to hateful speech, violating a principles and ideals sacred in this country. >> those anti-trump demonstrations continued over the weekend in the bay area our chopper flying over san francisco as protesters shut down traffic on parts of market street yesterday. demonstration began just before dusk. so far no word of any arrest. anti-trump protests took place yesterday in golden gate park. san francisco leaders are planning to attend a unity gathering supporting the idea keeping san francisco a sanctuary city. that takes place 10:00 in the

morning in the city hall rotunda. san jose police are still saying very little about the death of a man found yesterday in a case now being investigated as a homicide. this is what happened. police found an unidentified man yesterday afternoon peppermint drive and white road near a local elementary school cedar grove. investigators say they are not sure where the man died. they are trying to pinpoint the crime scene. they have not indicated a cause of death. 5:05. oakland city council members meet in their first discussion since the passing of proposition 64 which legalized marijuana. today's meeting is expected to include several items related to marijuana and pot dispensaries. it will cover the cultivation of marijuana. prior to last week's election, city leaders unanimously passed a resolution supporting

proposition 64 which voters approved by a wide margin. san francisco's 911 system getting an upgrade. this week is a big transition into that system. the current system is 16 years old. the new system will be more reliable and capable of supporting new technology. the city's emergency management leaders plan to explain more about the transition. now to an alarming trend on the california coast. scientists are investigating why there have been a record number of stranded guadeloupe fur seals. they saw a record number of stranded seals in 2015 they believe el nino played a role. >> let's take a look outside. that is a live picture from the

marina in lombard street. as you're heading to golden gate bridge, good luck seeing the bridge. there is an immense amount of fog outside today. there is a fog advisory in the south bay. >> it may expand northward given the changing conditions we are seeing now. there is downtown san jose. 58, patchy fog. even downtown san jose down to almost 1/4 mile. you see the worse of the fog here towards napa and 101 commute in san martin. the low clouds are going to stick around through 10:00. 4:00 in the afternoon, hazy sunshine and highs climbing into the low 70s around san jose. mid to upper 60s around san francisco and oakland. tomorrow morning talking about a chance of showers making a comeback and cool temperatures ahead. you can see those low temperatures in the 30s and 40s

across some of the valleys as we head to the middle part of the week. best chance of rain comes in saturday. you can see more than two inches of rain. a closer look at that storm in about five minutes. we are looking at the fog at the top and bottom of your screen. we have those registering for low visibilities. we don't typically see that issue here in the south bay. we have a crash left over here. this is 280 saratoga. this is partially blocking one lane. fire crew may still be on scene. a much more serious issue over here as far as slowing goes. westbound 580 or eastbound 80. golden gate field heading up toward the carquinez bridge,ç there is a lot of slowing. there is a crash around buchanan. at least a deer was hit. i'm worried about the driver of the car. still waiting to get a status on that.

>> we have a slow drive 25 minutes out of the altamont pass. the speeds are holding up. >> strong aftershocks shaking parts of new zealand after a deady earthquake caused major damage. rescue workers are still looking through rubble to see if any survivors are trapped underneath. at least two people died and there are concerns the death toll could rise. the quake was 7.5 centered northeast of christ church and struck 24 hours ago. it was so strong it triggered waves eight feet above the usual tide levels. three cows have been stranded on an island of grass in an area that's been ripped

apart by that powerful earthquake. this is from a helicopter flying above showing those cows surrounded by huge landslides. no word how crews plan to rescue those cows. could new rules being considered by the epa mean you could be drinking water with higher levels of radiation? tonight senior investigator reporter takes us inside the battle over drinking water. epa wants to raise the amount of radiation allowed for drinking water after a spill or accident. critics say people consume water with those higher levels of radiation in it, more will get cancer. >> under the safe drinking water act, we are to be protected over a lifetime of radiation exposure at a certain level. what the epa has proposed doing, allowing you to drink in a single glass of water as much

radioactivity you would normally be allowed in an entire lifetime. >> the epa insists these new levels are safe and they reflect a new understanding of the science around radioactive elements. some workers within that agency disagree. tonight you'll hear from both sides and see places in the bay area where this issue is already a very real one. that story is tonight at 11:00. it is 5:15 monday morning. publically facebook continues to denied it affected the presidential election. >> after all the fake news stories circulated. privately the company is aghast at the accusations against them. >> the people i talk to at facebook say it's an argument inside the company. accusations that inaccurate, even fake news in your feed influences your vote. we've seen those stories on your facebook feed. questionable news agencies, many

news agencies you never heard f of. we've seen fake news stories rise to the top. zuckerberg is saying "i think the idea that fake news on facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea." the problem with the argument is he can't have it both ways. facebook is credited with influencing the arab spring and other politics around the world. it's not hard to assume it would also affect ours. remember facebook is, above all, an advertising platform. the problem facebook faces is how to get rid of the inaccurate news items, and more importantly, who is going to decide what's accurate? russia is threatening to ban linkedin in its company. it doesn't keep russian data in russia and that's a security

risk. as websites get more and more popular, countries are starting to wonder if we have too much of their citizens' information. landon dowdy is live at cnbc world headquarters. >> good monday morning to you. things should be quieter on wall street today. possibly all week after the elections sent the dow to a couple of fresh all-time highs, notching up its best weekly gain in nearly five years. friday the dow closed up to 18,847. nasdaq up 28 to 5237. investors want to keep that party going. there is no major economic data out today and only one earnings report of note from advanced auto parts out this morning. futures are mixed. as we inch closer to black friday and official start of the holiday season, a study by bank rate.com says most people would prefer not getting a gift card. the study says only 27% of

if you missed it this time around you only have to wait 18 years. >> or if you manage to be up on mt. hamilton above the fog, you can see it. >> let's take you outside. there it is. mt. hamilton there. by around 6:30 this morning as the sun begins to rise in the east, that super moon will be setting off to the west. you can't find that view in san jose where it's 58, patchy dense fog. visibilities at times less than 1/4 mile. that's the view outside at&t park. patchy fog into san francisco. mountain view down 1/4 mile. you can see napa down 1/4 mile. half moon bay out to the west with that patchy thick fog that will linger through 10:00 this morning. hazy sunshine.

there is your sneak preview tuesday. a chance of showers showing up during the day tomorrow. highs with hazy sunshine in the low 70s around the santa clara valley including san jose. 72 livermore. 71 in antioch. san francisco in the mid 60s today. north bay highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. we have the system here offshore that during the day tomorrow brings in a chance of showers as we head through tuesday morning. light rain totals here. this system has cold air behind it. by wednesday and thursday mornings as the showers shut down, lows in the 30s around the bay area. get that winter coat ready for the second half of the week. rain projections with a stronger storm as you head towards the weekend. some computer models bring in that saturday storm as much as two inches of rain or higher. this is how they'll play out in the seven-day forecast. slight chance of showers

the dublin cam remark not too bad. it does drop off the north bay and east bay. 40s and 50s to start the day after low clouds break up around 10:00 this morning. mid 60s in the forecast from san francisco to oakland. >> we were talking about that fog. out of san martin and morgan hill. watch it through silicon valley. we are not used to that fog here. be advised it is there. this issue here, a deadly crash. we've got the confirmation they have closure for this connector. this is getting away from the bay bridge making the bend over there. try to catch westbound 580 and richmond/san rafael bridge. a pedestrian crash. no word when they can open it. take central or karlsson. that will take you back over to 580. that means another five, possibly ten minutes to cross

that span over to the foggy north bay. that's the big issue. bay bridge commuter lights should be turned on any second. urgency this morning as the search is on to catch a man who shot directly at two san jose police officers. neither one of them was injured. >> kris sanchez live at the san jose police department to explain what led up to this shooting. good morning, kris. >> good morning. sounds like this all started with a routine check. two officers outside their patrol car approaching a group of young men, perhaps teenagers when one of those men fired as the rest of them fled. those officers were not hurt, but we do know the rest of the department would like to track down that suspect. you can see in the video of the scene near ripley drive that it is a neighborhood where at 7:30 in the evening on a sunday night, anyone could have been in the line of fair. the reason the officers did not return fire as the police

spokesman tells us, they are not trained to shoot unless they have a safe and open field. this happened on the same day the sheriff's deputy was shot dead execution style. >> we are concerned about the climate. we are concerned that there has been something lost in the concept of law and order. it's very near and dear to our hearts when an officer is shot down and murdered. there is no sketch but police describe this suspected gunman as a hispanic man in his 20s, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, clean shaven wearing a black and gray flannel shirt with white t-shirt underneath and black pants. call the san jose police department. you can call 911 if you have information. you can call crime stoppers. as kris mentioned, the shots

fired at the san jose police officers came on the same day officials say a sheriff's deputy was executed by a man in the central valley. dennis wallace died yesterday morning when someone shot him twice in the head as he checked a suspicious van. it happened near houston. after a manhunt lasting several hours, authorities arrested the suspect more than 100 miles away south in lindsey. >> the suspect tried to steal a purse from a female mihm who fought back and called the police. as police responded to this incident, the suspect fled the scene on foot and was captured. >> sounds like he was on a spree. the suspect already with a warranted felon. he's identified at 37-year-old david mercado. 5:34 monday morning.

donald trump's transition team is continuing to evolve and take shape as the world digests the president-elects first interview since last tuesday's stunning victory. reince priebus has been named chief of staff. campaign ceo steve bannon has been named chief strategist. bannon was the head of bright bar a conservative website. >> they'll both have big roles in a trump administration, as well as they should. it was a small core senior team. >> trump appeared in a wide-ranging interview with leslie staal and addressed many different issues. a wall will be built on the border with mexico. he admits he doesn't completely intend on replacing obamacare. >> are you going to make sure people with preconditions are still covered? >> yes. it happens to be one of the strongest assets.

also children living with their parents for an extended period. we'll very much try and keep that. >> some republican leaders say parts of trump's wall with mexico could turn out to be more of a fence than a wall. an east bay community has a unique response to racist graffiti found on the walls of one of its schools. bob redell joins us live in alameda to explain a little more. good monday morning to you, bob. >> good morning to you, laura. just this past friday, someone scrawled racist graffiti on the side of edison elementary behind me here. the school covered that up with a fresh coat of paint, but in response to that message of hate, the community wants to send a message of love to the students here at edison and other schools. this morning at 8:00, some people who live here are expected to be out here on the sidewalks greeting students with pictures of hearts and signs that read "everyone belongs

iraqi forces say most of the fire burning from those wells have been extinguished. sheriff's deputies are looking for five people after a contra costa county man was killed in the midst of a violent robbery involving pot. this is the picture of the main suspect in that killing. 24-year-old zachary worcester from new jersey. the killing happened thursday afternoon in a remote home in lakeville. deputies say 35-year-old was growing marijuana and robbed by several of the people he hired as marijuana trimmers. police believe alcohol played a deadly role in this crash yesterday morning. the driver of a bmw coup lost control on the third avenue exit off northbound 101. the car crashed head on into a tree. a very ugly scene.

know the wife. >> david chappelle hosting "saturday night live." his sketch came with the social media hashtag made america laugh again. while there were plenty of laughs, he did take a serious note talking about how far the u.s. has come and saying he felt hopeful about the prospects of the country. kate mckinnon playing hillary clinton what would she say about this? hillary clinton got more of the popular vote. it looks like clinton's lead is going to grow wider. "new york times" projects that clinton could end up with nearly 2 million more votes than donald trump when everything is counted. a lot of those ballots that still need to be counted are in california and washington. even with all the uncounted ballots, turnout is expected to hit its lowest point in 20 years.

just 55% of eligible voters in the u.s. cast a ballot. a hot new item shows up in an unexpected place. dozens of people from the bay area drove down to big sur to get their hand on snapchat spectacles. this vending machine sitting outs outside big sur. the first vending machine popped up in venice beach. the grasses can capture videos and upload to snapchat. they sell for $130, but they are going for thousands more now on ebay. >> last year's hit could make a comeback. hoverboards were a very popular item last year despite many recalled and banned from airlines following a series of reports of fires. they could be a hit this year.

>> you have to wonder what's different this year. >> those stores are certainly aware of the number of lawsuits against retailers like amazon. in one case a tennessee family suing amazon for $30 million for selling them an exploding hoverboard that caused a fire and destroyed their home back in july. the chinese reacting to trade threats from the future president by issuing some threats of their own. a newspaper that speaks for the chinese government printed an editorial over the weekend that said "a batch of boeing orders will be replaced by airbus. u.s. auto and iphone sales in china will suffer a setback and u.s. soybean and corn imports will be halted." this is the chinese government

speaking. trump says he is going to add a 43% or 47% tariff. we send china 20 billion worth of agriculture products each year, much grown in red states. china is saying if you put a fee on their products, not only will they make the things you buy much more expensive, they'll hurt american business, as well. china is threatening to slow the number of chinese students allowed to study in america. many schools on the west coast have been criticized for allowing too many chinese students instead of american students. but chinese students pay more which nets the colleges more money. >> the dow had its best week in five years. a rally on wednesday when it looked like donald trump would win. that doesn't make sense. investigators are happy. tech stocks continue to do

to take place. visibility down to about a half mile at times. that continues to palo alto. here is the view outside at&t park where it's 56 degrees and about just under a mile visibility in san francisco. notice these low clouds. lingering around the central bay through 11:00 this morning. for the afternoon, we'll get that hazy sunshine and highs reaching the low 70s around san jose and around the tri-valley. close to 70 in vallejo. 60s around san mateo to belmont.
