not. >> not at all. >> did you step out in miami this morning. it is cold. so you do need an extra layer as you go out and we'll be turning the heaters up once again. it's that kind of morning. also fog is a problem in the north bay. elsewhere it is fairly clear, but down to a half mile in spots like napa and santa rosa where the temperatures are in the upper 30s, else where in the 40s. as we go into today, mostly sunny, at least the start. highs reaching into the low 60s, upper 50s for the east bay. tonight the rain starts to move in to the north bay. we'll talk about that come u ing up in a few minutes. >> we have a couple of crashes around the bay. nothing serious as far as the freeways are concerned. also showing up over here, a little fog is what we'll be monitoring this morning. in the south bay is the crash i'll be talking about this time. in is northbound 101.

a single car involved went into the center divide, now sticking out into the fast laechb. no slowing, but no serious injuries. in cupertino -- nearby off el camino, another issue. this very serious. >> this started in san francisco. breaking overnight, a high-speed chase turns into a deadly wreck. a street in sunnyvale shut down as investigators comb through the scene. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in sunnyvale where it's a very active scene. chr kris, this started in san francisco and within minutes ended in the south bay? >> right. this was a very fast pursuit, went through several different cities. you see the scene is still active. the chp told me they now know the driver was just 19 years old. the passenger was just 18 years old. the passenger is the one who died. here is how the whole thing ended, the driver on the ground

being arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. in the video, you can see it started with san francisco police asking for help with a vehicle stop after 12:36 this morning. there was suspicion of an armed robbery. the chp tried to stop the driver ten minutes later near 101 in san mateo. the driver took off with officers in pu suit at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. at 1:00 this morning, the driver crashed into cars and his passenger was thrown out of the vehicle. >> the passenger was ejected and was pronounced at the scene. >> this may impact the morning commute for a while. one block of el camino in sunnyvale is closed. sunnyvale police say they may have to close westbound directions just to search for

clues out here. chp is investigating the chase and a crash thaended here in sunnyvale. san francisco police will continue to investigate the initial crime that triggered the whole pursuit. that was a suspected armed robbery in san francisco. the driver, the passenger, both young men from san francisco, again, the driver just 19 years old, the passenger who passed away was just 18. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." this is a tragic story. a church turned into a crime scene. this morning a tight knit bay area community is left in shock after a father is accused of killing his 4-year-old daughter inside. police say 42-year-old gerardo mendoza ordaz drowned his 4-year-old daughter with his 9-year-old son watching. police say he ran to the healed

berg police department naked, carrying the little girl in his arms and screaming for help. police say they eventually determined this was not an accident and the father was responsible. relatives of the suspect say they are in shock. >> i don't really know what to sachlt hearing about this for the first time, that's kind of surreal. >> his wife is pregnant. they have three other kids. >> this is the first homicide in healdsburg since 2008. continuing with tragic stories this morning. developing right now, a school bus driver is under arrest for vehicular manslaughter. at least five children have died after the buzz he was driving struck a tree yesterday afternoon. these photos show the bus flipped over there in between the trees. 20 children right now are recovering from their injuries. investigators say they're looking at speed as a factor in that crash. 4:35 right now. scary moment at one of the largest malls in the bay area as a fire forces hundreds of people to evacuate the west field

center in san francisco. firefighters say a trash fire that started on the second floor of the mall around 6:00 created this chaotic scene. shoppers say they smelled smoke and knew immediate they they had to get out of there. others say they didn't hear the alarms and if it weren't for security, they wouldn't know. >> we didn't hear the alarms. people came in and said there was a fire alarm and kicked us out. >> it went smooth. nobody pushing, it was quick. there was a lot of people -- hopefully everybody made it out safely. >> the fire department put out the fire quickly and nobody was hurt. employees went babbling to work when they got the all clear. 4:36. cool temperatures that seem right at home for the holidays. kari, will this keep up? >> it will. we're getting ready for rain and slightly mild temperatures. we'll talk about that and what to expect in the microclimate forecast. a clear view this time of 101 in san rafael. yesterday we couldn't see it because of the fog. it shifted.

morning. hayes valley you can see a little patchy fog going on there. visibility low in spots. look at that temperature now, 48 degrees. we're watching the next weather system that will be moving in as we go into late tonight and early tomorrow. as of now we're just seeing some clouds, and it's mostly clear with the temperatures dropping back to 37 degrees in santa rosa and napa, livermore now, it is 41 degrees in morgan hill, 4 the degrees. so the cold air is back and as we go into today, up to 60 degrees in oakland and san francisco. palo alto, 64 degrees, and in livermore 63 as well. this is the way it looks as we go into tonight. we start to see those clouds moving in through the day. here is the showers at 8:00 moving into santa rosa and point reyes. moving further to the south, we'll start to see the showers spreading out, becoming not as heavy, but still lingering into tonight and early in the morning

it becomes a little bit more scattered, by thanksgiving day it will be chilly. cold air moving in behind that, at least the skies will be clear though. as far as how much rain we can see, looking at light amounts for the far south bay. san jose about .10 inch. most of us getting a quick one-and-done rain. we could get up to maybe .25 inch for some of the spots in the north bay. we will get some of the clearing in our area by the next couple of days by thanksgiving, early on friday, and it returns in 250i78 for the weekend. as we head over to mike, some of that fog may slow you down. >> that's right. i'm listening to kari's reports carefully. watching the road weather index. the bulk not showing any problems with visibility. the crash in 101 in sunnyvale, that's off to the shoulder. not a concern for drivers, a little patchy fog for fairfield.

shopping. >> especially if it tells you crowded parking lots, a nice plus to that. >> count on them. some of the parking woes at a popular south bay mall, vest field valley field mall, officials say they're going to work with the city after weekend madness ahead, drivers waiting for spots for hours. now they say they're making it a priority to change the timing of the traffic lights before that black friday rush. >> better late than never. 4:49. san francisco pd stepping up patrols after recent shootings involving police officers across the country. just this last weekend five officers were shot in florida, texas and missouri. two of them died. >> it's always a reminder for us whenever something happens around the country, we've been vigilant and we've been aware since the start of these different shootings involving officers. it's a reminder that this is a reality of what we do.

>> looking at some of the national statistics right now, so far 20 police officers have been shot and killed just this year in ambush attacks over the country. that is the highest mark since 1995. >> it's 4:50 right now. a new study from stanford shows teenagers are easily duped by fake news on social media. the study centered on how students assess information online. it comes as google and facebook announce they will no longer allow websites that publish fake news. th 82% of middle schoolers could not distinguish an ad from a news story. got to do your research kids. >> healthy skepticism. should california secede? it's a long shot. now some formal steps are being taken. >> a group called yes california is pushing a proposed ballot

measure. if it makes it to the 2018 ballot, it would ask if the state constitution should be amended and ask voters if they want to secede from the u.s. we spoke with constitutional law professor margaret russell about this proposal. >> states can't decide on their own to leave the union. no matter what people think about brexit, our constitutional system isn't really set up to do that unless it's a very long process that involves every single state in the union expressing on on it. >> the only way to legally secede, would be to change the united states constitution which requires the approval of congress and 38 states. coming up, we investigate jails charging families crippling phone fees. why the feds say it creates even more crime. >> first, happening right now, good news in the fight against alzheimer's. rates of the disease and other forms of dementia are dropping.

details. hi, vicky. >> reporter: good morning. studies show one in three families goes into debt trying to maintain contact with a loved one behind bars. those relatives are mostly women and children of inmates. last year bay area counties collected nearly $7 million in call fees. the county says that money funds programs including education and religious services for inmates. critics say that funding should come from taxes. they point to the state prison system which capped phone fees in 2011. costs for a 15-minute phone call range from $2.60 in san francisco all the way up to $9.00 in napa. that same call would only cost about $1.50 from a state prison. the county is facing lawsuits claiming the fees are unfair and excessive. a federal judge put a hold on the decision until early next year. you can see our full report right now on nbcbayarea.com. just click on the investigations
