the south, northbound 280 at deanza boulevard, a crash reportedly blocking one lane. light traffic keeps the traffic moving smoothly past the scene. if you're heading toward apple or past the 85 interchange, folks work at all hours of the day in the bay area. we have an issue much more serious than that over in el camino. for that de25i8, i'll hand it back to you guys. breaking news we've been following all morning long. >> wild high-speed chase right down the peninsula into the south bay ends in a deadly wreck. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live at the scene in sunnyvale very active at this hour. any updates, kris? >> reporter: we can tell you the suspects made it very far very fast. you see behind me the vehicle is still here on the roadway as investigators are still gathering clues. that is the honda civic that is upside down, the passenger did die in this crash. we learned in the last 30

minutes or so that both of the young men involved in this crash were just 19 and 18 years old. this is how the whole thing ended, with the driver on the ground being arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. he did have a pit stop at the hospital with minor injuries. it started with san francisco police asking for help with the vehicle stopped just after 12:30 this morning after a suspected armed robbery. the chp tried to stop that driver who they believed was armed about ten minutes later near 101 and third street in san mateo, but that driver took off with officers in pursuit in speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour. about 1:00 this morning, that driver crashed into several parked cars in sunnyvale so violently his 18-year-old passenger was thrown from the car. >> hit five parked cars and overturned several times. the passenger of the vehicle was ejected and was pronounced at the scene. >> reporter: this may impact the morning commute for a while.

one block of el camino here in sunnyvale is still closed, talking about the eastbound direction between south wolf road and pobbler. the chp is investigating the chase and the crash that ended in sunnyvale. san francisco police, they're investigating that initial crime that triggered all of this, and that was an armed robbery. again, a 19-year-old man is in custody, an 18-year-old man is dead. in sunnyvale, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. tragedy continues this morning, a church turned into a crime scene. this morning a tight-knit bay area community is left in shock after a father is arrested for killing his 4-year-old daughter inside a church. police say 42-year-old gerardo mendoza ordaz drown the little girl at st. john's church sunday

night with his 9-year-old son watching. no one else was there. police say shortly after that ordaz ran to the heelgds burg police department screaming for help. police say they officially determined this was not an accident and the father was responsible. relatives of the suspect say they are in shock. >> i don't really know what to say. hearing about this for the first time, that's kind of surreal. >> his wife is devastated. she's pregnant. they have three other kids. >> this is the first homicide in healdsburg since 2008. a painful sight to see here as well. a developing story this morning. school bus driver johnthony walker under arrest for vehicular manslaughter. you see the scene of the crash. at least five children died after the bus struck a tree, essentially splitting it in half. this happened yesterday afternoon. these photos show the bus flipped over.

20 children are recovering from their injuries. investigators say they're looking at speed as a factor in that crash. >> a reason to be alert this morning. a brutal attack in the eastbound. this morning the search continues for an armed robbery suspect who beat a woman. i understand she was followed from a nearby b.a.r.t. station? >> correct. it's quite fright e ening. this morning, she's 48 years old, was walking away from a b.a.r.t. station in san leandro. this was 8:15 friday night. it was dark out. according to the sheriff's office, alameda county, a man started following her for several blocks. when they arrived at the intersection of 159th and mauber, a residential area not far from 580, the man attacked her, used a blunt object to hit her a number of times in the head, causing severe facial injuries, stole her cell phone and took off.

she's expected to survive. the man described as african-american, thin, 5'8", was wearing a blue jacket and jeans. if this man sounds familiar to you, law enforcement would like to hear from you. >> live in san leandro, bob redell "today in the bay." racial tensions continue on a campus in the east bay school. for the sixth time in the bay area, racist and homophobic graffiti has been found at a school in the san ramon unified school district. the latest incident on a school bus that serves mon vista high school in danville. the principal sent a letter to parents informing them of the situation. cal high school in san ramon has been targeted four times while monta vista has been hit twice. from oakland to d.c. now, late last night we learned the superintendent of the oakland school district is headed to washington as the new school chancellor. the spokesman says antwan wilson has been selected in part for his success in raising achievement scores.

we still don't snow when his last day will be or who will replace him. did you watch last night? conflicting times for raiders fans. finally they're amazing. that's the upside. their best season in 14 years, tried forethe best record in the conference. last night the first ever monday night football game played in mexico. >> it was technically a home game for the silver and black, even though it was more than 2,000 miles away. fans say they were fine with the team playing in another city, but for one game only. despite talks of a move to las vegas, many we spoke to say they're thrilled the team is 8-2. >> the best we've had in the past 13 seasons. >> raiders now have sole possession of first place in their division. this is what a lot of people are actually talking about this morning. could you see it? late in the first half, the houston quarterback went to throw a ball when a green laser could be seen crossing over his face. see it right there? several times.

partnership, the tpp, and boosting jobs at home. >> i've asked my transition team to develop a list of executive actions we can take on day one to restore our laws and bring back our jobs. it's about time. >> as the president-elect continues to evaluate future cabinet members, he's traveling to florida. it appears his transition will be on hold until after thanksgiving. 5:14 right now. they raised red flags when they noticed something wasn't right at wells fargo and say they got fired because of it. our investigative unit in tracking employees who filed complaints with the federal government. the agency won't disclose how many cases are tied to the bank's fake account schedule. the agency says it receive dozens of complaints from across the country. our investigative unit spoke with a former osha investigator. she said a wells fargo case briefly crossed her desk.

this morning bloomberg reports the company needs more money and there's concern the service is making too much food, sam and laura, in its san francisco kitchen, more food than it can sell so it has to throw out thousands of meals. munchry says it does sometimes make too much food but tries to donate. bloomberg says between 2015 and 2016 munchery made either 600,000 dishes it did not sell. >> that many? >> they say it's like a restaurant, we have to make more than we actually deliver, but that's a lot of food. >> have to be able to preserve it at least. >> or figure out a good system of donating it, too. >> speaking of which, we'll talk about donations right now. there's time yet to donate ahead of the thanksgiving holiday. obviously just days away right now. bay area food shelters still need more turkeys to feed as many people as possible this holiday season. you see all those folks lining

now, heading out the door, celebrating a w for the raiders again as we get a live look outside in oakland. mostly clear skies. highs today reaching 60 degrees. it's only '46 right now. here is a look at the temperature trend as we go through the day. 9:00 at 51 degrees into the upper 50s and briefly hitting 60. it's 46 in palo alto as well as san jose. oakland starts out the morning -- napa rather starts the morning at 41. will be up to 64 today in san jose as well as cupertino, 63 degrees. lower 60s for the east bay. antioch 63 degrees. half moon bay 59. and as we go into san francisco, upper 50s to right at about 60 degrees. lower 60s for the north bay. we'll also be watching the north bay later this evening. that's where the rain arrives first. we will see an increase in clouds today. some breezy winds. here are those showers. we start to see those bright colors. that shows where the rain will be the heaviest.

and then it becomes a little more widespread and not as heavy as it continues to move into the south bay as well as the east bay and the peninsula. rainfall totals for tonight and early tomorrow may reach half an inch for parts of the north bay. much lesser amounts as you go farther to the south. as far as our temperatures in san francisco, some low 60s for today, upper 50s for the rest of the forecast. off and on showers for the weekend, but we'll have that chance of rain tonight, early tomorrow morning and off-and-on rain for saturday and sunday. let's head over to mike for a look at what's happening in the south bay. >> you did mention fog in the north bay. that's a note, but not a surprise for a lot of folks during conditions like this. looking to the south bay where we've had the activity. the crashes have cleared almost as quickly as they have happened. 880 at washington, clear over by the castro valley y. kris sanchez continues to report

>> reporter: right. it started in san francisco, laura. within about 24 minutes everything went completely wrong. that car you see there upside down. that is the vehicle that was subject of the pursuit. this is how the crash ended, with the arrest of the driver on the ground. he was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery. those charges are going to increase because his 18-year-old passenger was ejected from that car and died here at the scene. it started with san francisco police asking for help with a vehicle stop just after 12:30 this morning. the chp tried to stop that driver when he was spotted about ten minutes later near 101 and third street in san mateo. the driver took off with officers in pursuit, sometimes with speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. about 1:00 the driver crashed into several parked cars so violently that his passenger was thrown from the car. >> hit five parked cars and overturned several times.

a judge for the first time later this afternoon. "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from the healdsburg church where this heinous crime was allegedly committed. pete, suffice it to say, this has shocked neighbors and relatives of the family. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam. 42-year-old gerardo mendoza ordaz will be arraigned later this afternoon. authorities believe he intentionally drown his little daughter inside of this healdsburg church that you see behind me. it has cleared this morning. we have video from yesterday when that church pretty much turned into a crime scene for the better part of a day. we're at st. john's baptist church. healdsburg police say this all took place sunday after ordaz abruptly left his wife and two other kids at home. at the time of the crime, ordaz was joined by his 9-year-old son. police say shortly after ordaz drown his 4-year-old daughter in the baptismal font, he ran to

the police department where they say he was naked, carrying his daughter in his arms screeching for help. the small community is shaken by this devastating crime. >> you see the kids playing on the street. it's quite emotional. >> reporter: ordaz was arrested for homicide and is being held under no bail. back in 1996 he pled guilty to felony burglary in healdsburg serving time in prison for that incident. as for this homicide, it marks the first homicide in the city in several years. we're live in healdsburg, pete suratos for "today in the bay." just a tragic story. 5:36. reports this morning of the new disturbing charge gns a former peninsula youth coach facing multiple felony counts of lewd acts with boys. julio ortiz is a former school sports coach in agenter thon who used his position to repeatedly

take advantage of boys. three more boys have come forward since that initial arrest. yesterday prosecutors successfully requested to increase his bail to $4 million. in a third trial, jurors have reportedly convicted a 22-year-old man in a disturbing south bay killing seven years ago. randy thompson and his friend jay williams repeatedly stabbed another boy, 15-year-old michael russell in south san jose back in 2009. his body was found in the back yard of his home. prosecutors called it a thrill kill crime. the "mercury news" reports jurors yesterday convicted thompson of first degree murder. in a previous trial jurors who convicted thompson were deadlocked on the issue. williams is already serving 26 years to life in prison. we continue to follow developing news out of tennessee as investigators still try to figure out what happened here. at least five children died in a deadly bus crash, and we're now learning the school bus driver

is facing charges this morning. "today in the bay's" sarah rosario joining us with details on what is a troubling investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam. 24-year-old bus driver is facing a list of charges this morning. there are still many questions left unanswered like how did this happen. people who saw the crash say the children were forced to get out of the bus through the hatch of that bus. many of those kids were rushed here to the hospital. six of them are still fighting for their lives. meantime local police are at the scene of the crash. they still have it closed off and they're waiting for the ntsb to finish their investigation. that's something that's expected to take lots of time. no word yet on how long it will take. officials say speed played a factor in the crash, but there's no word yet what caused the driver to run into the side of the road and into a tree. we know he was contracted by another company to drive that

bus. we were told he wasn't cooperating with police. they arrested him overnight. he's now facing five kouchbts of vehicular hochl side, reckless en daengerment and reckless driving. 24 kids taken to the hospital, most have been treated and released. six of them still fighting for their lives. as you can imagine, this is just such a hard thing for people to deal with, especially the week of thanksgiving. a local blood bank is asking volunteers for blood donations to help children in critical condition in desperate need of blood. live in chattanooga, sarah rosario, back to you. >> i can't imagine how those parents must be feeling. thank you very much, sarah. pretty frightening moments at one of the largest malls in the bay area. a fire forced thousands to investigate the west field malast night. a trash fire started on the second floor of the mall about 6:00. some shoppers say they id on the

hospital. we just got an update from the scene. the bomb squad now says the package that exploded included an actual device meant to hurt whoever opened it. the man thought the delivery was his inhaler. he's recovering from injuries to his hand and chest. international news. developing story out of japan. you see the shaking there. at least 14 people are injured, so far no deaths reported following the strongest aftershock to hit the island since the devastating earthquake and tsunami five years ago. the 6.9 quake hit off the coast of fukushima. the nuclear power plant there reported no damage. the quake did trigger small tsunamis, the highest just under five people. by comparison, the waves caused by a 9.0 magnitude quake in 2011 was 30 to 60 feet high. 5:45 right now. a bay area brothel busted. san mateo police say they

arrested three people at a home on west 20th avenue yesterday afternoon, across the street from san mateo city hall and a block from sarah high school. in the south bay sayer hif's deputies say the suspect in a violent home invasion in cupertino had been scouring the neighborhood for potential targets. investigators say these men canvassed the area knocking on doors. instead of targeting empty homes, they say these criminals had a different philosophy. >> what's concerning about this case, knocking on doors, what appeared to be to find people who were home to have them go into the house and lead them to their possessions. >> deputies arrested the suspects minutes after they allegedly held a couple up at gunpoint and ransacked their homes. investigators say they could be tied to more robberies in the same neighborhood. cal osha investigating a deadly accident in san francisco's dog patch neighborhood. a man was crushed to death yesterday afternoon when the

forklift he was driving tipped over and landed on him. the victim's name has not been released. 5:48 right now on your tuesday morning. a school fight, but it's not between students. this one involves a palo alto private school and the people living right around it. concerned residents are fighting the proposed expansion of the school. the all girls campus was the city's permission to boost enrollment and rebuild part of the campus. part of the plan includes tearing out trees and bidding an underground parking lot. >> we don't want to see an industrial cement wall. that's not why we're here in palo alto. that's never been palo alto. >> the school says it's committed to limiting the impact to the surrounding neighborhood. an environmental review is expected to take several months. should california become a free, independent country?

it's a long shot. a group called yes california filed a proposed ballot measure yesterday. if it makes it to the 2018 ballot, it would ask voters if the state constitution should be amended. it would also ask voters if they want to secede from the u.s. keep in mind the only way to legally secede would be to change the u.s. constitution which requires the approval of congress and 38 states. more controversy this morning over white nationalists and their use of social media. >> more controversial figures kicked off the internet. khiel la tequila posted this picture to twitter with the caption seek heil. she's been kicked off twitter this morning. this meeting took place in a maggiano's italian restaurant. maggiano says it was horrified. said the group booked the

north bay, showers later tonight, a high of 62 in novato. we'll start to see the clouds moving in this evening. here we are at 9:00 as the showers start to move in to napa and sonoma, moving into marin county and some very bright colors here showing that that rain may be very heavy. and we'll see it spreading oupt as we go into late tonight, early in the morning. if you have travel plans, we could still have some lingering showers for early tomorrow. then it clears out through the day, cool temperatures left behind. thanksgiving will be very school to start with upper 40s, even 30s once againer li in the morning. rainfall totals will reach spoen 10 inch for most of us and heavier farther to the north. temperatures will be at 60 today in san francisco, 50s for the rest of the forecast this weekend, off and on showers and the same thing for the inland areas. mike has more info on a closure in sunnyvale. >> that's right.

for a basic service, and now families of i right now an investigative unit exclusive. they say they're being gouged for a kbasic service. now families of inmates are suing saying the county jail system over charged for inmate phone calls. >> senior investigative reporter vicky nguyen looked at the claims and joins us now with the details. >> good morning. studies show one in three families goes into debt trying to maintain contact with a loved one behind bars. those relatives are mostly women and children of inmates. last year bay area counties collected nearly $7 million in call fees. the county says that money funds programs for inmates including education and religious services. critics of the fees say that funding should come from taxes. they point to the state prison system which capped phone feetion back in 2011. we found costs for a $15 call ranged from $2.50 up to $9.00 in napa. that same call would only cost about $1.50 from a state prison.
