california highway patrol officers ready to go on the freeway should the situation take to the high. we can see the highway patrol meeting up with the sheriff's deputies. we're waiting for more information. over at the main jail, you can see the helicopter flying over. earlier they had a large spotlight searching the area and looking to see if these two inmates got out, but then did not get far. let's look at that picture one more time -- rogelio chavez on the left, he was being held on charges of burglary, exportion, false imprisonment, firearms violations. he's a big guy, 6'1" 190 pounds. that distinctive facial tattoo over his left eye. he has a large "b" on the side of his neck. the other guy, landon campbell, has been held here at the santa clara jail since february of
4:03 am
2015. also on robbery, criminal threat, false imprisonment, 6'4" 240 pounds. they were wearing gray pants and an orange prison issue top. unknown whether they were able to shed those at this point. we are waiting for more information from the sheriff's department. they are making sure that they are covering the roadways and policem perimeters, making sure if these two suspects are still yes the area that they can bring them into custody without them coming into contact with anyone else. we are trying to get more information. we'll work on that and see you back here in a half hour. kris sanchez, "this week in baseball." >> we will check back with you. we will keep these photos up this is who you need to be on the lookout for this morning. as kris mentioned, 33 wroerld rogelio chavez, he is on the right. he has that distinct tattoo over
4:04 am
his left eye. he also has a letter "b" tattooed on the left side of his neck. he is a big guy, 6'1" 190 pounds. he had been in custody since about august for some prior offenses there. 26-year-old landon desean campbell is the other male there. he's 6'4" 210 pounds. so these two men on the loose. they escaped in their orange prison tops, gray pants, possibly changed by this time. possibly could have had someone pick them up. you need to be aware of what is going on. it happened in downtown san jose at the main jail. >> all of this happened around 11:00 last night. this is a map of the main jail. you know it well if you pass by on 87 on the way to the san jose airport. much of this area is blocked off. you'll be able to see if you're driving past spotlights, police
4:05 am
cars, sheriffs deputies with search lights out as well as they look for these suspects who came out of that jail. there were four of them originally. two were caught. this happened about 11:00 last night. these are dangerous suspects on the loose. a number of activities happeninging in downtown san jose today, we understand these are still on this morning. you can see the pictures of the two suspects. >> they escaped from the oldest section of the main jail from the second story window. they reportedly cut or came through the window's bars to make this escape. interesting because they're described as very big, tall guys. somehow they made that escape. shift change, i believe, is around that time. we don't no if that had an affect. we also don't know if any officers or deputies inside the main jail were injured at this time when these i goes made
4:06 am
their escape from the main jail. trying to gather more information. we're in contact with the sheriff's department right now. you're going to see a lot of -- if you're in the downtown area at all this morning, you'll see a lot of streets blocked off in the area as they're trying to make any attempt to find them. of course wrap a perimeter around this area. >> kris sanchez was mentioning a number of police agencies are helping out as well this morning including sunnyvale, obvious obviously santa clara sheriffs deputies and chp as well. >> this is video from our producer who was jogging through the area last night, no doubt shortly after the escape actually happened. very interesting to note there. active scene. we expect it to be a busy day in downtown san jose today, with it
4:07 am
been thanksgiving, the annual turkey trot will be going on. we'll talk to the officials of that organization to see if this could change the route f there are streets closed off in downtown san jose. >> all morning we'll follow this breaking news. we have the nbc bay area app you can get as well. we'll take a quick break. we'll be right back. in the bay's damian trujillo on
4:10 am
know. >> it happened that the old jail, we know that portion of the main jail was about to be decommissioned. we were going to build a new facility there. at one point one inmate escaped from the new jail by using -- it's the old style jailbreak, used bed sheets and tied them together. no doubt jail administrators right now are looking at any maybe phone records from these inmates, looking at the visitors log to see who came in so they can start questioning those people. no doubt that the homes where these inmates are registered, there's patrol officers there right now, jail administrators questioning those family members trying to find out where exactly these inmates might be. it's a very serious situation, and especially in light -- we have this big turkey trot taking place in the exact downtown area, not far from the map jail. no doubt there are worries there about the safety and security of
4:11 am
the folks who will be participating in the turkey trot. >> i recall that jailbreak as well when they mentioned to use sheets. you were surprised by how they did it. did they do a shift change about that time, damian, about 11:00? >> reporter: you know what? the shift starts about 6:00 p.m. i don't think it would be shift change at that time. this is the main jail. these are not the inmates that are there for minor crimes. these are more serious crimes. those jail cells have to be inspected periodically it's kind of baffling to see how this would happen over time.
4:12 am
they must have been planning this for a while. it's not easy to escape from a facility like that. >> especially on a day like thanksgiving. you mentioned them looking at the visitor log and phone records as well. there's usually a belief that the guys on the inside can be in contact with family or friends on the outside to pick them up, a change of clothing. they left in the orange prison tops and gray pants. they're big guys. >> they are indeed. we've been showing you pictures this morning of the two suspects that are still on the run. 26-year-old desean campbell is 6'4", 210. 33-year-old rue gilot chavez. he'll have a tougher time hiding out. he's got a tattoo, a line
4:13 am
through his left eye, tattoos on his neck, seen just after 11:00 as they escaped. two inmates captured. these fellows are still on the run and they are dangerous fellows. one is in for burglary and extortion charges, the other robbery, criminal threats and firearm charges. >> we'll keep monitoring what is going on there. we have kris sanchez who is down at the downtown area this morning. it is also thanksgiving. happy thanksgiving to you. >> and happy thanksgiving to you as well. the turkey trot as we were mentioning in san jose still on as far as we know. let's talk to care kari as well. you have our thanksgiving forecast. >> that pi thanksgiving. this is right at heading street and guadalupe airport. over here, sjc not too far away from here.

and hedding. bob is live at guadalupe and heading where the search is on for two escaped inmates. what do you know? >> we peer on the other side of the jail. we know they escaped around 11:00 last night as we've talked about all morning. foreign mates tried to escape from the second floor window. two immediately caught. the other two are still outstanding. i talked with the sergeant at the santa clara county sheriff's office saying they're calling
4:18 am
people in. they have a perimeter around the jail. just driving within a mile around the jail area you see patrol cars out there searching. i saw one squad car posted at a gas station. a helicopter with a search light from time to time we've been seeing flying around the area. >> the two inmates are on your screen, one is rogelio chavez, held on a number of chargetion including burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, resisting arrest and firearms violations. he's on the left side of your screen. you can see he's hispanic. he's 6'1", 190 pounds. he has the tattoo on the side of his face. on the right side of your screen, that's landon campbell, booked in february 12th of this year, held on a number of charges including robbery, false

imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations. he is 6'4" and 220 pounds. again, these two inmates have been on the loose for roughly five hours now. there is a hunt for them around the jail and a perimeter that's been set up. live outside the jail here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, bob. it's normally a quiet time in that downtown area. we expect not so much traffic to pick up, but there's a turkey trot race that happens every thanksgiving. these suspects escaped from the santa clara jail have escaped. stay with us. we'll have the latest on air and online. quick break right now.
4:21 am
4:22 am
originally there were four of them. now there are two and they are still at large and they are dangerous. the man on the left is 26-year-old laron desean campbell, 6'4", 210 pounds. the man on the right, rogelio chavez, 6'1", 290 pounds. both wearing their prison orange when they escaped. they were last seen around 11:00 last night. >> let's check in with kris sanchez in san pedro, heading to downtown san jose. pretty large presence there. it looks pretty quiet on the streets there. >> reporter: it's pretty quiet. there are officers fanned out all around this area. there's a perimeter around the main jail which is where the jailbreak happen. we did see law enforcement trucks parked on the freeways,
4:23 am
parked on the roadways, strategically set up should someone spot the inmates. this is the main santa clara county jail. this is where the two suspects or inmates escaped from the second story window. we understand perhaps they may have tied some sheets together to get out. damian trujillo mentioned this is part of the jail that's supposed to be decommissioned soon. the two inmates who are at large are considered dangerous. they have pretty serious charges against them, burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, firearms violations which leads us to believe that at least one of them has prior violations. this is a multiagency manhunt right now. talking about the santa clara county sheriff's deputies, they're on the streets, sunnyvale police department and chp officers as well. this is going to be a rough search until daylight because it is a very dark night. there's just a little sliver of
4:24 am
a crescent moon. as we all know, if you spent time in san jose, a lot of the street lights are that dark yellow that don't put off a lot of light. here where we are at the intersection of san pedro and west heading, there's a vta line that runs not too far away, right near 87. if they were able to breach the perimeter, they could have gotten far pretty fast. we do see the helicopter beaming down light trying to saturate the area and make it visible if the inmates are still here. we'll stay where we are, hoping to get more information. we have an officer we expect to come over shortly. we 50e8 bring you that as soon as we get it. chrkris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> right now let's check in with kari hall. so many people have today off. it is thanksgiving and a very cold start to our morning. >> scott and laura, we are in for chilly temperatures getting a look outside now.
4:25 am
you see that things are fairly quiet. we're once again keeping an eye on that perimeter around the santa clara county main jail. this is where it is now. west heading street where it intersects with 87, also 880 is just to the north of there and it's not far from san jose mineta airport. getting a look at what's happening now, the bigger picture, a lot of people heading out for the travel day. if you're planning to drive or fly rather out east, we're seeing a storm system moving through new york. we're also watching our next weather system that's producing very heavy rain around seattle and portland. you can see the spine as it clonts to move closer to the bay area. we'll start to see the clouds spreading in late tonight into tomorrow. now those temperatures as we talked about are very chilly, 41 degrees in palo alto, 42 degrees
4:26 am
in oakland. half moon bay starting the morning at 46 degrees. cool temperatures throughout this morning and warming up into the low 60s. we will see those 60s as we go into the east bay as well as san francisco. showers will be returning once aga again. so heading into the day, we will have some patchy fog, especially in the north bay with this chilly start. at lunchtime, it will be slowly warming and for a few of the inland areas reaching low 60s once again by tonight, cool and cloudy. as we keep an eye on that storm system moving in, we will have increasing clouds for tomorrow night and we'll start to see the showers moving in late. by saturday the rain will be moving in and it becomes more widespread. we'll pretty much see it raining all day long. snow in the sierra and by sunday morning rain will be ending. during that time we will have the potential of close to an inch of rain in the south bay, and it may be a little more in areas like ukiah and the far
