. good morning to you. we have breaking news on this thanksgiving. police searching for two suspects there. you see them on your screen. sheriff's deputies say they escaped from the santa clara county main jail in san jose. >> it's actually a pretty active sooep scene in the south bay. the suspects escaped a little after 11:00 last night. they've been on the run for some time. we thank you so much for joining us. we did come on early this morning to give you the very latest information. so let's get straight to what we know. >> officials say two suspects, 33-year-old rogelio chavez and 26-year-old laron deshawn campbell escaped from the santa
4:31 am
clara county county main jail. there were two other suspects that also escaped but were quickly caught. they were wearing orange prison tops and gray pants. there's a perimeter near the jail. our kris sanchez is there. these are violent offenders. >> reporter: these are violent offenders. and they were in the main section of the county jail. they were able to cut through the bars of the window on a second floor cell and that's how the four managed to escape. two of them apprehended immediately. the other two suspects are rather large men, over six feet tall, over 200 pounds, they're still on the run. this was the scene as this whole jailbreak was unfolding. we know this is now an active man hunt. we don't know exactly where the sheriff's department is looking, but we do know there's a helicopter over the main skbral blasting light all around the perimeter, trying to see if they
4:32 am
can flush out these two men if they are able to spot them. if they were able to get out and breach the perimeter, they could have gotten far, we're right down the road from highway 87, a vta line about a block away. if they were able to blend it, they could have made it quite a distance. santa clara county sheriff's department, san jose police department, we saw california highway patrol and we know sunnyvale dpd, sunnyvale police department is also assists in this one. if you happen to be in the area or you were in the area last night, you should call 911 and let the sheriff's department know what you saw. if you happen to see them today, if you live in this area, do not come into contact with these two men. they are dangerous. it's possible they are armed as they had something that was able to cut through the bars of the window. the deputy out here says make
4:33 am
sure you just call 911 and let them know what you saw and let them do the apprehension. don't try to apprehend these two men yourselves. rogelio chavez is 6'1", 190 pounds and lar ron campbell, 6'4", 220 pounds. it's a very cold night. if they were out in regular prison issue gear, it is cold for them. it is dark out here. there's just a little kres september moon. as you can see, these yellow lights are around san jose. not a lot of light from the street lights. >> we're hoping a sergeant is coming making his way here as soon as he gets briefed. we'll bring you more information about how far the perimeter extends. we came upon it in a couple of placeless, but we want a clear delineation so you know where you are safe and where you might be at risk. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> to give you kind of an idea of how big that perimeter is around the main jail, kris
4:34 am
sanchez was at san pedro in heading, bob redell is at guadalupe and heading. it makes a square around the main jail. bob has a look at the scene, what it looks like. we see there's patrol cars behind you as well. >> there is a perimeter around the jail. we also know the helicopter has been flying over the jail vicinity with a spotlight on some of the wooded area that's not far from the jail area. again, in search for these two men, we want to put their mug shots back up on the streets so you can get a good look and give you a little background on who they are, what they were in jail for. on the left side of the screen, rogelio chavez was booked into jail in mid august and being held on a number of charges, including burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, resisting arrest and firearms violations. he's 6'1", 190 pounds. if you lock at his face, he has a distinctive tattoo below his left eye.
4:35 am
on the right side of your screen is laron campbell, booked in february of 2015, he's been in there for quite some time, charges include robbery, falt imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations. he's 6'4" and 220 pounds. again, the sheriff's office trying as you see desperately behind me as the vehicles make their way out to try to find these men who are considered very dangerous. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we continue to cover this, we're going to go out to pete suratos. he is out near the turkey trot. this was supposed to be, pete, a normal thanksgiving. this is what san jose does on thanksgiving. this race will still go on, correct? >> reporter: good morning, scott. yes, it is going to skill go on. we're at first and santa clara street.
4:36 am
that will be the starting point. i talked with carl -- i mentioned with one of the organizers with the city. what he's telling me is that the event is still going to go on as planned. they're not going to make any changes, but their typical large security presence -- he didn't want to give me exact numbers -- he said there's going to be a large security presence that will be in place so folks that are participating in the race -- this race has happened in downtown the last 12 years, we're talking thousands of people that have participated in the race. the first start will be 6:30 a.m. right now they're literally in the setup stages. we'll try to talk to him some more. >> there are a couple aspects to this race i understand as well. there's a sok first, a 5k coming up second, so different start times. >> that's correct. you've got a 5k and a 10k.
4:37 am
the first one, i'm taking a look at the press release. at 7:30 they'll have the elite women's 5k and qualify the elite men's 5k. then you have another 10k race starting about 8:25 a.m. you have them pretty much throughout the morning. the first one is at about 7:30 a.m. you'll have the racers start to check in at 6:30. if you've been to any of these big races, especially these holiday races, you'll start seeing runners and people showing up probably in the next couple hours or so as the setup takes place here. >> thank you very much. pete suratos on what will happen this morning. the turkey trot will go on despite the escape of two inmates from the main jail this morning. there's a perimeter set around that area. we'll bring you the latest information live on nbc bay area, our website as well. we're tweeting and facebooking updates. >> as we go to break, we'll show

4:42 am
laura. right now we're looking at clear skies, very chilly temperatures. a live look outside near the sap center. it looks nice and quiet there. i want to give you an idea of where the main jail is now. it's right at 87, guadalupe freeway and 880 where the nimitz freeway comes together near the airport. i also got a report that there's a minor accident on 880 right in about this area. it's blocking the slow lane. so that's also something we'll be keeping an eye on. as we go to san francisco now with some cloudy skies overhead, it is very cool. only 44 degrees. heading up to 58 degrees today. definitely long sleeves needed. on this thanksgiving, if you're planning to hit the road early this morning, going from here over toward i-80, toward lake tahoe, it will be icy at times. quite a bit of snow the past couple days. 101 from sunnyvale to los
4:43 am
angeles is looking all clear, and we are also going to have a dry travel on i-5 and pacific northwest. that's where we have some heavy rain. it's now 41 droes in concord. napa is at 37 degrees. 44 once again in san francisco and palo alto at 41 degrees with highs today reaching the lower 60s in the peninsula. breezy winds today and a high of 61 degrees. 58 in san francisco and the east bay up to 59 degrees. we'll take a little bit of a break from the rain today and most of the day tomorrow. and then late tomorrow night we start to see the showers moving in to the north bay and becoming more widespread throughout the day on saturday. it looks like it will be raining off and on all day saturday. by sunday we'll start to see the storm moving off to the east and wrapping up for the bay area. as far as how much rain we can see during that time, the potential of at least half an inch of rain all across our area
4:44 am
and then up to an inch of rain in a few spots. in san francisco, once again upper 50s today, 60s tomorrow, late rain and a steady rain on saturday and sunday. highs reaching 60 degrees as it wrapsp early next week. many people heading back to work. we'll also have cool weather for the inland areas, soggy weekend ahead as a lot of people go to the mall, getting in that shopping. it looks like you'll definitely need an umbrella, maybe a poncho and some rain boots scott and laura. >> thank you very much. >> we'll give you another look at the pictures of the suspects who escaped the santa clara county main jail around 11:00 last night. they're still on the loose. police and sheriff's deputies frantically looking for them. we'll be back with full coverage in just a moment.
4:47 am
. welcome back to this breaking news edition of "today in the bay." this morning two escaped fugitives on the run. they escaped from the santa clara jail last night a little after 11:00, considered violent felons. 33-year-old rogelio chavez is on the left. he's 6'1", 190 pounds. he's got that pretty distinct tattoo on his left eye. a bee tattoo on the left side of his neck as well. 26-year-old laron desean campbell is 6'4", 210 pounds. he's been in the jail since february of last year. both were last seen leaving the second story window of the jail
4:48 am
in their orange tops, the jumpsuit tops that you usually see felons in and gray pants as well. they actually set a perimeter p up. >> we have video from within the jail itself and outside as sheriff's deputies begin their search, this coming in to our newsroom overnight. you can see a very serious search indeed. they have gone inside. one of the things we tend to forget is they have searched the jail itself as they are searching for these two suspects. >> this is actually video that happened just a little bit after 11:00 last night. it's just coming into our newsroom. they went to search surrounding areas, the surrounding buildings in there. you saw the deputies were armed. they're looking in windows, doing what they can, had canine units with them. they immediately launched their
4:49 am
helicopter as well to get an overhead look to try to see where these escaped inmates went. >> we have damian trujillo on the phone. you've been covering county government and law enforcement for a very long time and, for that matter, kwoo it a few jailbreaks. >> the good news, if there's any good news is that there is a perimeter. it tells me that law enforcement seems to think that they know the proximity of these inmates. the entire time is not in any danger. i spoke with folks over at the turkey trot who are organizing that, they don't believe that's in any danger because of the perimeter they have in place. but that area is surrounded by law enforcement. there are tons of police officers assigned to that area. you have the sheriff's office right around the corner, the police department around the corner, emergency dispatch system is there. a lot of people who are trained on public safety, they are in
4:50 am
that area and it's all hands on deck right now to try to find this person. a source within the jail system tells me that since 11:00 last night it has been all hands on deck. it's just another black eye to the jail system since after the death of inmate michael tyree, just one thing after another has been happening to that jail system. this source tells me that the jail has been somewhat lenient on some of the inmates because of all of the criticisms that have been coming forth from the community. so maybe some of that leniency of the inmates has led to this. that is just speculation from this source, but legitimate speculation given everything that's happened over the last year or so inside that jail. >> damian, thank you so much. the turkey trot will go on with a large police presence as they look for these two escaped

couple of minor accidents and also around that perimeter near the main jail where there is the closures as they continue to look for those suspects. they see here where they do have the closures there, also a minor accident, and here is where the jail is and the airport is right over there. there's a minor accident on 880 near 87. that will be something we'll be keeping an eye on. elsewhere we do have the turkey trot in san jose and also the turkey day run in san francisco. so there's some closures in that area. now as we look at what's happening in the weather department, we have clear skies over san jose and in san francisco also mostly clear skies and temperatures are dhilly. it's only 44 degrees, heading up to 58 later today. traveling across the region from here overthrow 880 -- i-80
4:56 am
through tahoe, it will be icy at times. make sure you have the tire chaens even though the snow has ended. 50 through tahoe also has slick roads. going from here to l.a., it will be all dry. also if you plan on taking the grapevine, it's also looking dry, and the pacific northwest, that's where we have the rain coming down. so heading north of here, it looks pretty soggy for the weekend. now it's in the upper 30s to low 40s, so a chilly start to this thanksgiving morning. into the day our temperatures returning closer to normal. highs in the low 60s, mostly sunny skies, 58 degrees in san francisco and 59 in the east bay. we will have at least 24 to 36 hours of dry weather before the rain returns late tomorrow night and a steady rain expected for the weekend. by sunday morning, this storm system moves off to the east. some snow once again for the sierra and that rain will be out of here, but not before leaving

at least .50 inch of rain. it may be closer to .75 inch in spots like livermore and san francisco and santa rosa. that's where we could have a pretty good soaking for the weekend. it moves out once again on sunday, very chilly temperatures, only reaching into the upper 50s for the next few days. the same for the inland areas. rain once again late friday night. so that should not impact your black friday early shopping plans, and next week a lot of sunshine. our temperatures slowly rebounding into the mid 60s. scott and laura? >> all right. a cold start to our day. we continue to follow breaking news this morning. thank you very much, kari. two escaped violent fugitives on the run, escaping from the santa clara county jail. we have the latest coming up. reporters at the scene gathering information as we speak from the santa clara county sheriff's department working in conjunction with other departments across the bay area to try to look for these two men who escaped from the jail a
