5:02 am
sergeant rich glennon says they are likely very desperate. we just spoke with him in the last three or four minutes. here is what he had to say. >> the main thing is we're asking for the public's assistance. this is an active search right now. we have santa clara county sheriff's office, has approximately 45 deputies involved in the search. we have our crime scene investigation team, our detective also on scene. we're also getting assistance from san jose pd and sunnyvale department of public safety. >> reporter: there's a large residential area along that side. is there anything that those folks need to know? do you want them to shelter in place? do you want them to stay locked down? >> we're asking for the community to definitely be aware. if they see something suspicious, to call it in. the san jose police department is patrolling those neighborhoods just to make sure those residents are safe. >> reporter: the freeway right there, 101 right there, 880 not
5:03 am
too far, vta line. is it possible that these suspects got out of the perimeter? >> we're exploring everything we can, reviewing vta footage. chp has been notified to be on the lookout for anybody in the area as well as all the local agencies were made aware immediately of the escape. >> reporter: the news saying they cut through some bars. any idea how that managed to happen? >> it's still under investigation as to how the bars were cut. i can confirm they were cut and they repelled out of the window, fashioning clothing and bed sheets. >> has anything like this ever happened to your knowledge at the jail here? >> to my knowledge, not recently, no. there's never been an escape from main jail south in this kind of fashion. >> reporter: is this main jail south or which part of the jail are you talking about? >> it's the older section, constructed approximately in the
5:04 am
1950s. it's on the back side of this building. >> reporter: is it possible these two men are armed, if they have something they were able to cut through? >> we have no indication that they are armed. as of right now we don't know exactly how they got through the bars which is, the desperate act of cutting through bars to escape from jail, they know they're being pursued. we want the public to take extreme skaugs and notify law enforcement. >> reporter: we saw the press release of the charges they have against them. can you tell us anything else about them, where they're from, when these offenses were committed? >> i don't have that information to be released at this time. the charges that were listed or what they were being held for, they have not been sentenced yet. those are the charges they were held for. >> reporter: so are they convicted? >> no. they're awaiting. >> reporter: how dangerous are these guys? >> i think anybody who is willing to escape from jail are
5:05 am
probably desperate at this time. so we definitely want the public to take precautions, definitely to not try to apprehend them, but to notify law enforcement and help us bring them back. >> you know they used clothing to repel out. are they clothed currently? are they shirtless? >> we don't have that information at this time. unfortunately in the particular area there are no cameras that caught the escape. >> how far down did they repel? is it a few stories? >> they were housed on a second floor. so it would be two storyies. >> from their cell? >> their own cell, that's correct. >> how is it that the other two were caught right away? >> they were caught just around the main jail complex. so there was a correctional deputy on an exterior patrol. he saw some movements of someone in the shadows and looked up and saw the clothing hanging from
5:06 am
the window and was able to apprehend two of the escapees. >> and how far is this perimeter? where should we tell folks not to go? >> not to go? >> can they get through here? obviously this part of heading is closed. any other part where people are not going to be allowed through? >> as far as streets being closed, it's just this general area, but the actual search extends beyond the perimeter. >> i know there's a turkey trot not too far away this morning. any chance that the search is going to impact that whatsoever that you know of? >> the search is minute by minute i.'s hard to tell. san jose pd is fully aware of all search activities. >> reporter: and that was sergeant rich glennon of the santa clara county sheriff's department telling us how those two inmates were able to be
5:07 am
apprehended, how the two inmates subject of the manhunt are still at large. you heard maybe one of those questions in there about cameras. we know this has been a hot topic at the main jail. whether or not there are cameras, there is the old part of the main jail on the back side of the building, a section to be decommissioned. there were no cameras that caught this escape. we do know it happened in the second story cell where those four inmates were housed, how they managed to get through those bars is unclear. we understood initially they had cut through them. at this point now the sergeant says it is not clear. they did have bed sheets and clothing that they were able to repel down to the ground. two of them apprehended when a deputy was doing routine patrol and saw some movement in the shadows. took them into custody right away. the other two are still at large and very serious charges. they have not been convicted, have not been sentenced because they have not been convicted. but very serious charges that
5:08 am
could make them a danger to the public at large. whether or not they were able to breach this perimeter is unclear. we do know the chopper is no longer overhead at the main jail. we did see california highway patrol officers parked and stapgsed on the freeway. 87 just down the street. also down the road close to mission street and the on-ramp there. they are looking through surveillance video for vta because that vta line is just a hop, skip and a jump down the street over here on north first street. they're looking to see if perhaps there are any clues there. if you are in this area and you saw something or you see something this morning, do not come into contact with these men. they are dangerous men. they are desperate men. just call 911 and let the authorities handle it. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." we'll see you in aful ha hour. >> we'll keep checking back with you. very active scene. there's a perimeter set up around the main jail. these men, they don't know if they're armed, but they are considered very dangerous. at this point they've been out

photos of suspects. welcome back to you at 5:23. these are two suspects who are on the run after escaping the santa clara county main jail around 11:00 last night. the police and sheriff's deputies are on a frantic search for these two men, rogelio chavez and lanon desean campbell. campbell in jail on charges of robbery, criminal threats and firearms charges. chavez in for burglary and extortion. so needless to say, these men are very, very dangerous. >> they are actually two of four inmates that escaped last night a little after 11:00 from the old main jail. it's actually the one that's set to be decommissioned.
5:24 am
a deputy on patrol outside the jail actually noticed some movement in one of the upper second floor windows. that's where they somehow took off the bars, they tied together sheets and clothing and repelled down. two of those suspects were actually apprehended down on the ground. these two men that you see on your screen, they are the ones that are on the run. want to check in with "today in the bay's" damian trujillo who has been in contact with the sheriff's department as well this morning. damian, you and i have been here for quite some time. we've actually seen this before where they repelled down. >> that seems to be the m.o. of the escapees, they tie these sheets together and repel down to the bottom floor. what they have done in the past is run over to the guadalupe river area, not too far, just on the other side of highway 87 and try to make their escape that way. i should point out that in my
5:25 am
memory, none of these en mates who have escaped in recent memory has ever remained on the lamb. they've been caught eventually. they run over the guadalupe river and blend in with some of the homeless population out there or just make a run for it that way. i should also mention that across the street from the jail is also the national guard. so that area is completely surrounded by folks who know what they're doing when it comes to public safety. >> very interesting. we talked to someone from the sheriff's department earlier who said they're trying to go over any video that they can. but they don't have cameras outside that area of the old jail there. they are going over footage from vta lines because it was still running a little after 11:00 last night. >> the other important thing is it is a holiday. so you don't have the hundreds, if not thousands of people who would be flocking into the county government center to go to work or to the courthouse which is right next door to the
5:26 am
jail to do their daily business. in one way, one perspective, they've kind of lucked out. it is a holiday. you don't have a lot of people either caught in the middle of it or being kept away from work. >> they escaped in their orange shirts, their gray pants there. most likely they could have changed by now. you mentioned earlier, damian, they're most likely going over phone records that these inmates could have had with friends and family as well. >> damian trujillo reporting live as well. we saw kris sanchez. we have team coverage. what we know, we have crews on the scene. they have spoken with santa clara county deputies this last hour. they're getting hell from the san jose police department as well, sunnyvale department of public safety. police asking the community to be aware of what's going on, report anything suspicious. the two fugitives are not believed to be armed. but if you see them, certainly don't confront them.

train hoping to see if there are any clues there. if those two inmates were able to breach the perimeter, they could have gotten far very fast. we don't know if they were able to breach the perimeter. this is the main jail here you're looking at. the part of the jail where this escape happened, it's a section of the jail that's supposed to be decommissioned soon. and because it is to be decommissioned soon, there were no cameras that caught this escape. but we do know that because of a routine patrol by one of the deputies on the outside of the building, that's how the other two suspects were apprehended right away. >> unfortunately in the particular area there are no cameras that caught the escape. they were caught around the main jail complex. so there was correctional deputy that was on an exterior patrol. he saw some movement of someone in the shadows and looked up and saw the clothing hanging from the window and was able to

apprehend two of the escapees. >> reporter: so those four inmates were able to escape from the second story cell where they were housed. they were able to make it down to the ground. two of them escaped and got away and now are subject to a manhunt. there's no specific perimeter where you are not allowed in, but the sheriff's department is asking for members of the public to be veg lent. if you live in the area, make sure your doors an windows are locked. if you see anything unyoushl, call 911. these men are considered dangerous. we don't know if they're armed at this point. we do know they're considered to be very desperate at this point. the search continues here. the helicopter is no longer over this part of the main jail. we don't know where it went. we're trying to track that down. we can tell you the multiagency search, 45 sheriff's deputies alone are on this one. detectives called in special on this holiday. they're looking at the vta surveillance, any other surveillance in the area.

chp is involved. sunnyvale department of public safety, that's the police department and also the san jose police department involved if this one as well. so an all-outman hunt for two dangerous men who should not be on the street. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much for the late of the live from the scene. >> we have several reporters on this. "today in the bay's" bob redell is at guadalupe and heading. tell us about the scene there. >> reporter: we're a couple blocks on the other side from kris sanchez. you can see a deputy has been posted out here to redirecting traffic. we saw the helicopter with a search light probably about 30 minutes ago searching the area to the west of highway 87. adds chris mentioned, we haven't seen a helicopter in quite some time. we have seen patrols coming into this area. we saw patrols in the area surrounding heading and the main jail here in downtown san jose. give you some more information on this two inmates who are

6'4", 220 pounds. this is what one of the sergeants with the santa clara county sheriff's office had to say about these two inmates. >> i think anybody that is willing to escape from jail are probably desperate at this time. definitely want the public to take precautions, not to try to apprehend them but notify law enforcement and help us bring them back. >> reporter: unfortunately the sergeant was telling us there's not a video camera that caught the escape in that section of the jail. it's not clear if they're wearing their orange inmate tops and gray bottoms or something else. >> live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. as they mentioned, they don't know if they're armed, but they are considered very dangerous and desperate. that is why patrols are going on like this. this is video that we received shortly, about half an hour ago to our newsroom of deputies on patrol in some of the outer buildings in downtown san jose

surrounding the main jail there. they're also going to homes nearby. there is the guadalupe reservoir that is not too far. there's a homeless encampment there. we talked to damian trujillo earlier that that would be a very easy place to hide. they're 6'4", 6'1", they're big guys. they're looking at vta cameras to try to find any information about where these two men went. >> certainly before all this happened, our original plan was to get you ready for your thanksgiving that might involve travel. we gave mike the day off. but kari is in with a look at first traffic and then weather on this thanksgiving morning. >> good morning. happy thanksgiving. we have a fairly good start to the roads this morning. of course there's going to be a lighter flow of traffic as we go into the next few hours. we've also had a couple of minor accidents and one was right near the airport on 880. as of now that has cleared up.
5:38 am
that's not too far from the perimeter they have set up around the santa clara county jail. that's right where 87 intersects with 880. once again, that minor accident that was there has cleared up. in the north bay we see the road weather sensors indicating there's patchy fog from 101 south through san anselmo. that's also going to slow some people down, but there's not that many people out there on this thanksgiving morning. maybe you're heading into san francisco getting ready for the turkey trot. that's near at&t park. you see the road closures there. and also there's a minor accident on 101 north, just south of 280. that may also cause a few problems. so looking at some fairly clear conditions out there as far as your driving this morning. going over to weather now, we have mostly clear skies looking over san jose. it's nice and quiet, but it is chilly. a live look outside also in san

5:40 am
61 degrees in the north bay, and san francisco 58 degrees. into the day in oakland, we start out at 41, sunshine once again, high of 59 degrees. we will slowly see those temperatures climb by noon. still 55 degrees, and 59 degrees once again. the rain holds off for today as well as most of the day tomorrow. but then the showers moving back in for friday night into smtd, wrapping up on early sunday. it looks like a soggy weekend and the potential of at least a half inch of rain, maybe closer to an inch of rain in a few spots. highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s in san francisco for the next seven days. rain moving out on sunday. dry for monday and tuesday, and another chance of rain not only around the coast, but also for the inland areas next wednesday. so a couple of weather systems will be moving our way, laura and scott. >> all right. we've been warned. thank you very much. we're warning you about a situation going on in downtown san jose. here is what we know.

there were no cameras that captured this escape. no high-tech help, but definitely low-tech help. it was an alert deputy who managed to apprehend the other two inmates who escaped when he looked up and saw the sheets hanging out the window. >> it's still under investigation of how the bars were cut. it can't confirm that the bars were cut and they repelled out of the window, fashioning clothing and bed sheets to get to the ground. they were caught just around the main jail complex. there was a correctional deputy that was on an exterior patrol. he saw some movement, someone in the shadows and looked up and saw the clothing hanging from the window and was able to apprehend two of the escapees. >> reporter: that was sergeant rich glennon. we talked with him in the last half hour or so. he says there has never been an escape like this one in this

section of the jail. damian trujillo has reported there have been other escapes before this. it must have been a different section. we do know the sheriff's department has asked for other agency help in this manhunt and apprehension of the two ous standing suspects. we know that the sheriff's deputy is out here, has about 45 different deputies out here. they called in detectives. they are also looking at surveillance video from the vta line which is just behind us in the other direction on north first street. so about a block away. they are also asking chp to be on alert. as we were making our way out here, we saw patrol cars stationed on the freeway in the event their assistance was needed. sunnyvale police has also offered up assistance. there are agents, rather officers from that department out here as well. we have seen a shift change here this morning, seen the correctional deputies going into the jail, likely they are searching the inside of the jail as well this morning. we don't hear the helicopter

ad-lib suspects photos. . back to breaking news on this thanksgiving morning. two fugitives on the run. they broke out of the santa clara county jail last night. the old part of the main jail, actually four originally broke out a little after 11:00 last night. two were apprehended down on the ground. these two men are on the run. 33-year-old rogelio chavez. he is on the left there, has that very distinctive tattoo of a line through his left eye. 26-year-old lanon desean campbell. he's 6'4", 210 pounds. they have been on the run for almost seven hours now. >> "today in the bay" went on early. we have been relying on a series of reporters, a team of reporters that are very experienced in the south bay. we have kris sanchez out there. we have bob redell out there. we have damian trujillo
5:55 am
consulting us. he's been talking a great deal about the history of the jail. we want to come out now to one of our reporters who is out there, damian trujillo. what is the latest you know? >> reporter: the fact that there's still a containment line around the perimeter of the jail is obviously good news. it means that the investigators and the people looking for these guys seem to believe that the inmates are still within that perimeter. and so that immediately takes the threat away from the surrounding areas and the rest of the city. you don't want there to have been some sort of coordination with somebody on the outside, some sort of getaway car that was waiting for these guys outside the jail and then who knows where they might be right now? the fact that they're still concentrated on that surrounding area of the jail is good news for everyone. >> so why do they think that,
5:56 am
damian? >> reporter: apparently the people who saw the four inmates and apprehended the two of them seem to obviously believe that they didn't go very far, and they immediately called on the radio and asked for backup. so once that happens, as we mentioned, the sheriff's office is virtually next door. the police department is steps away from the jail. when you call for mutual aid and backup because inmates have escaped, that area is immediately surrounded by law enforcement. so the propensity of the inmates to escape the perimeter is really not there. it seems like they did act fast enough, they put all hands on deck beginning just after 11:00 when this escape happened. so the worry is that at some point these inmates do escape the perimeter and who knows where they might be. the fact that they're concentrated on that area points to good news.
5:57 am
>> they still haven't caught them, working on about seven hours that these fugitives have been on the run. we'll continue to check back with you, thank you very much, damian. >> it's a cold start to our thanksgiving morning, especially across really the bay area. we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall who has a look at our forecast. >> there are quite a few events going on as we get a look at the weather maps, as we start out with mostly clear skies this morning, we will have chilly temperatures as you head out. a live look outside at emeryville. if you're about to get on the roadways, whether you have to go to work or head hitting the road early to head to a family mem befr's house, it is looking good as you get out for most of the roadways. here is a look at at&t park toward the embarcadero. this is where the thanksgiving day 5k will be happening. we have the turkey trot in san francisco that will be happening at golden gate park. so a lot of events. now it is only 45 degrees. make sure you wear warm clothes

if you're going out for an early morning run. for the travel forecast, in the pacific northwest around seattle and portland, there's heavy rain coming down. that may affect some of the flights as this next weather system, you can see the spin of that area of low pressure continues to move in. this will impact the bay area starting late tomorrow night. and a travel forecast for the region, from here to southern california, whether you're going 101 or the grapevine, is looking all dry. we'll have some sunshine today. if you're going over towards the east, through the sierra, through tahoe, it will be slick and icy at times even though the snow is not coming down anymore, it will still be icy out there. look how cold it is in livermore, just one degree above freezing at this point. it's 39 degrees in concord, 35 in napa and santa rosa. so definitely a cold start to this thanksgiving morning. but it will be nice this afternoon. 61 degrees in the peninsula and

the south bay, 62 degrees, upper 50s for san francisco as well as the east bay, and napa, it's 37 now, but we'll see those temperatures climbing into the mid 50s later today. showers moving in late tomorrow night. that should not impact the early morning black friday shopping plans. widespread rain on saturday. if you're still planning on getting in some shopping, it looks like it will be a wet one, with the potential of at least a half inch of rain all across the bay area. so over the next seven days, cool temperatures, rainy weekend and drying out early next week. for the inland areas we're looking at more of the same. once again the rain moving in late tonight.
