11:00 last night. this is new video we received this morning. very active scene in the south bay right now. streets are closed, deputies combing the area, going to local businesses, by ground and by the air. thank you so much for joining us on this thanksgiving morning. let's get straight to what we know. >> officials say these two suspects, 33-year-old rogelio chavez, 26-year-old lanon desean campbell escaped from the main jail around 11:00 last night. there is a massive perimeter set up near the jail. officials say these were violent offenders. we'll check in with "today in the bay's" kris sanchez. she is one of a number of reporters we have on the ground. kris is at san pedro and heading. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, scott and laura. we heard damian trujillo talking just moments ago about the fact it is possible that these two suspects had help in getting away, out of the perimeter
6:01 am
before the ser pim ter was even set up. this is where we are. this is the main jail, the santa clara county main jail. you have law enforcement here. on the other side of this block, that's where the san jose police department is. highway 87 connects to 101. 880 is not too far from here. by my cameraman, a vta line on north first street. there were plenty of ways for these two men to get away and get away fast. we don't know if that happened. we do know that there is a perimeter here on north heading street, that 45 sheriff's deputies are on this manhunt right now. detectives have been called in special on this holiday and they're also looking at surveillance video from that vta line. also they called in for mutual aid from the san jose police department and the sunnyvale public safety department, that is their police department. here is what sergeant rich glennon of the santa clara county sheriff's department had
6:02 am
to say. >> we're asking for public assistance. this is an active search right now. we have santa clara county sheriff's office has 45 deputies involved in the search. we have our crime scene investigation team, detectives on seen, help from sunnyvale department of public safety. >> there's a long residential area along that side. is there anything those folks need to know? do you want them to shelter in place, stay locked down? >> we're asking for the community to definitely be aware and definitely, if they see something suspicious to call it in. san jose police department is patrolling those neighborhoods to maybe sure those residents are safe. >> reporter: freeway right there, 101 right there, 880 not too far, vta line. is it possible these suspects go out of the perimeter? >> we're exploring everything we can. we're reviewing vta footage. chp has been notified to be on
6:03 am
the lookout for anybody in the area as well as all the local agencies were made aware immediately of the escape. >> the report is they were able to cut through some bars. are you able to say how that managed happen? >> it's unthor investigation as to how the bars were cut. i can confirm the bars were cut and they repelled out of the window fashioning clothing and bed sheets to get to the ground. >> has anything like this ever happened to your knowledge? >> to my knowledge not recently, no. there's never been an escape from main jail south in this kind of fashion. >> which part of the jail are you talking about? >> it's the older section, constructed approximately in the 1950s and it's on the back side, on the back side of this building. >> is it possible these two men are armed if they have something that they were able to cut through -- >> we have no indication that
6:04 am
they are armed. we don't know exactly how they got through the bars. the desperate act of cutting through bars to escape from jail, they know they're being pursued. we want the public to take extreme caution and notify law enforcement. >> we saw the press release the charges they have against them. can you tell us anything else about them, where they're from, when these offenses were committed, when they were convicted? >> i don't have that information at this time. the charges that were listed are what they were held for. they have not been sentenced yet. >> are they convicted? >> no. they're awaiting. >> how dangerous are these men? >> i think anybody that is willing to escape from jail are probably desperate at this time. so definitely want the public to take precautions, not to try to apprehend them, but to notify law enforcement and bring them back. >> do you happen to know, did
6:05 am
they use clothing and everything to repel out, are they clothed currently? were they shirtless? anything like that that your officers know? >> we don't know that information at this time. unfortunately in that particular area there are no cameras. >> how far down did they repel? how far was it? >> they were housed on a second floor. so it would be two stories. >> from their own cell? >> it was from their cell, that's correct. >> how is it the other two were caught right away? >> they were caught just around the main jail complex. so there was correctional deputy that was on an exterior patrol. he saw some movement of someone in the shadow, and then looked up and saw the clothing hanging from the window and was able to apprehend two of the escapees. >> reporter: again, two of the four escapees were apprehended immediately. no doubt they are being
6:06 am
questioned by authorities right now about what they knew and what they know and where those two other inmates may have been headed. we don't know what their relation is, whether they knew each other before they were housed together. we do know they're on the run. perhaps they have separated at this point. they are considered dangerous. they're rather large men, over six feet tall, right around 200 pounds, each of them, and with a dangerous rap sheet. if you see them, law enforcement says do not contact them, call 911 and let the authorities do their job. we know deputies are doing a manhunt. there are patrol cars stationed all around this perimeter. we know canines are involved in the search as well. as we get more details from the sheriff's department, we will try to reveal those two you. at this point it seems like these two are on the run and making good headway in getting far away from the jail where they escaped. laura and scott. >> it will be interesting to see. on the other hand, we've heard
6:07 am
from damian trujillo who has been talking to someone from inside the jail who says they believe they could be very close there. i don't know where these guys are but they have been on the run for almost seven hours. >> almost seven hours. >> exactly. >> kris, it's interesting to note, this is the old section of the jail that was going to be decommissioned. there was talk about putting cameras in that area. there were no cameras that could have maybe helped. >> there were no cameras in this section of the jail because it is the old part of the jail. you might remember we have investigated the situation inside the jail. sheriff lori smith did buy cameras with her own money at costco and put them in one part of the jail where one inmate was beaten to death by correctional deputies. those cameras are not in this part of the jailment it's the part of the jail, the back section there. there were four inmates in that second story cell. all of them made it out, down
6:08 am
those bed sheets and clothes tied together so they could repel down to the ground. again, two of them were caught right away by an alert deputy who was on routine patrol, but no cameras will reveal exactly how this happened, how those inmates were able to get those bars across, get out from those bars on that second story. laura and scott? >> thank you very much, kris sanchez live at the scene. wet went on errorly this morning at 4:00 a.m. to bring you the latest developments of what is happening in our own back yard. nbc bay area online, we're tweeting new information and you can get our push alerts if you signed up for our app. >> we're less than one hour aye way from sheriff's deputies. meanwhile, you've got to get a start to your thanksgiving as well. let's check in with kari hall and your weather. >> happy thanksgiving. a lot of people will be hitting the roadways for an early morning drive to a family member's house. here is a look at emeryville right now. things are flowing smoothly.

the santa clara county sheriff's department this morning. you've been gathering great information for us. what's the latest? >> reporter: been on the phone since 2:30 this morning. still waiting for an update from them. this is the main jail south, the old jail. there is a small walkway that separates the big -- i think it's a 12-story building, the main jail from this old jail cell. that's where this breakout happened. part of the jail is set to be demolished in the near future. i guess they decided it couldn't happen soon enough, that's why the inmates escaped. we should recall just a couple months ago there was an attempted escape at the elmwood jail, a minimum security facility in milpitas, also run by the sheriff's office. that inmate left his sandals dangling from the fengs as he tried to repel across the
6:34 am
security fencing and ultimately was captured. that was only a couple months ago. now we have this -- no doubt the sheriff's office has its hands full with the security systems there in the jail. a lot of questions that could be answered this morning. >> it continues. the woes for the santa clara county sheriff's department. you mentioned the elmwood attempt. and years ago others tried to escape buy tieing sheets together. >> reporter: i think that was four stories that a couple of inmates escaped, tieing those sheets together. they didn't get very far. that's the good news with the manhunt that we've had from the escapees at the santa clara county jail, is they have been captured. it's taking a little longer on this one. i'm sure all hands are on deck and they'll do their best to catch these guys. >> most definitely. it happened a little over seven
