they're up to. runs=07 looks like thanksgiving and it's supposed to be like a family day. and who knows what they're up to. >> right now on nbc bay area, a thanksgiving jail break. the hunt is on for two escaped inmates in the south bay. how they broke out and where they might be. nbc bay area news starts right now. good evening. thanks for being with us on this thanksgiving night. i'm raj mathai. we're on in prime time because of thursday night football. what is happening at this hour, a lot is happening. a hectic scene in downtown san jose, four inmates broke out of the county jail. two have been captured and these two are still on the loose,

laron campbell and rogelio chavez. it's something right out of a movie. a makeshift rope that dropped them to freedom. we begin our team coverage in san jose. where are the officers searching? do we know and how dangerous are these two inmates? >> reporter: we know they are out there at this point, the officers, that is. this is the main jail behind me. the inmates were housed in the old main jail which is the building right behind this facility. tonight the manhunt continues. these are the two inmates accused of escaping from the main jail. rogelio chavez and laron campbell. >> based on their history, yeah, they are dangerous. >> reporter: the sheriff's office released these images. they show what's left of a steel bar that was hacksawed from a second floor cell of the main jail cell and the bed sheets

used to rappel to the ground. >> inmates are sophisticated to the point where they have a lot of time where they can sit and think about how to get out of jail. >> reporter: for more than ten hours police looked for the escapees in a perimeter they established around the jail. by 9:00 this morning through surveillance video from another location, investigators determined the inmates got away and the manhunt expanded to the entire county. >> the fact that these bars were cut the way they were, it wasn't something that they just thought of in a minute. it's something that probably took some creative planning. >> reporter: i have been speaking with my sources since about 2:30 this morning. i can report that the investigators are not taking any breaks. they are undertaking this manhunt as we speak. we're live outside the county jail in san jose. i'm damian trujillo. >> we'll keep you there on site just in case things develop in the next few hours. here's a closer look at one of the escapees, rogelio chavez. this is video of him in a palo

alto courtroom last year facing one of his criminal charges. this obviously has been a nefb wracking thanksgiving. people in the neighborhood are scared, not only the thought of seeing these escapees, but also the heavy police presence up and down the streets. michelle roberts has more. >> just probably be more on the outlook for it. you know, if you can. >> reporter: police are asking neighbors to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. earlier this morning sheriff deputies patrolled the streets near the main jail. >> it's unnerving. nobody wants to hear that in your neighborhood. >> reporter: less than eight hours after the inmates escaped thousands of runners arrived to participate in the silicon valley turkey trot. there were a hundred officers along the race route as an increased precaution. >> i noticed that security was beefed up more, which is good. makes everybody feel at ease. >> looks like thanksgiving and it's supposed to be like a

released this morning and flagged down as a passing driver in yolo county. she was bound with restraints. the 34-year-old mother of two is now in stable condition at a hospital recovering from minor injuries. she was apparently abducted by two women. >> well, obviously, she is very relieved to be returned home safely and be reunited with her husband and so in addition to any other further on her emotional state, i don't have that information. >> investigators are looking for a dark-colored suv driven by two armed hispanic women. a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the abductors. the hol days can bring out the worst in our driving. the chp is having a busy week and it could be a busy weekend. officers made 179 dui arrests in first six hours of the maximum

enforcement period. it ends sunday at midnight. right now all available officers are on patrol to keep the highways safe through the weekend. as for our weather, gorgeous tonight. clear and cold. take a look outside. this is good fireplace weather. live look at the golden gate bridge and in san jose. bring in meteorologist rob mayeda with our forecast. >> good to have a heater if you're indoors right now. livermore, 44 degrees, 49 in san jose. we're sleeping without a cloud blanket tonight. you can see san jose pretty clear over downtown and the beacon there atop the transamerica pyramid lit tonight fog free across san fran. and yes, the radar is dry. you can see the rain isn't too far off. this next system will bring maybe an inch or two of rain across the north bay as this rolls in, but with the more interesting part of this weather picture will be into the weekend as colder air rises.

pretty civil here outside the macy's in san francisco. look at it right now. this is 9:00 on think think nig -- thanksgiving night. people started lining up minutes before and what do you know seconds before there were nearly 300 people out here the shoppers were looking for anything from cashmere to cologne with a good chunk of the merchandise at a reduced price. as you see, they all entered in an orderly fashion. the line wrapped around the building. tvs and electronics were the main draw. we spoke with one man who just needed to get out of the house. >> if i stay at home, i have to help cook some sides, so i stay out here and shop and get a tv. >> reporter: across the u.s., stores like target and toys "r" us are up and running this thanksgiving. many stores are open to 1:00, 2:00 or even 3:00 a.m. and some

are open overnight. overall sales are expected to increase by about 3 1/2% this year overall as a nation. coming up tonight at 11:00, we'll show you more of the door busting deals and door rushing deals from across the bay area. as for now, we're live in san francisco. ian cull. >> ian will come home with a bagful of goodies. a sweet story on the peninsula, the family cat might have saved two lives. a fire early this morning in the garage of a home on los prados street. the cat made enough noise to help the owners escape. you see the cell phone video. tonight the cat is alive and well as is everyone in that home. investigators aren't ruling out arson. a taco truck was robbed in broad daylight. it happened yesterday afternoon in benicia.

they were last seen leaving in a blue gray honda suv. three men wearing masks and hoodies held the workers at gunpoint, sprayed them with mace or pepper spray and took off with the cash. >> unusual. the taco trucks in town are kind of a staple of the businesses that are out there for local quick bite to eat and breakfast and things like that. they're out there, but it's not a high risk target. >> the employees of that taco truck were treated at a local hospital for minor burns. still to come on this thanksgiving night, how a small san francisco market holiday tradition is inspiring a lot of other people to help. a restaurant faced with eviction earlier this year opens its doors to hundreds of families in need. i'm jodi hernandez in richmond. i'll tell you what drives the restaurant's owner to give back in such a generous way. and we're expecting a chilly night in store. cool start to the morning around san jose.

you're watching nbc bay area news. we investigate. for hundreds of people in need it was a day of fine dining. an east bay restaurant that was in need itself earlier this year provided free meals. n brks krrbc bay area's jodi he has more. >> reporter: richmond salutee restaurant rolled out the red carpet to give hundreds of bay area families in need a thanksgiving to remember. gourmet meals with five-star service in one of the east bay's finest restaurants. >> any more water or tea? >> it's not about -- only about

the meal. it's about experience. you know. they feel good. at least today. they feel special. >> reporter: the owner knows all too well what it's like to be without. once homeless herself, the immigrant from ethiopia has had her share of hardships. including a near eviction. the community rallied behind her four months ago after her landlord threatened to evict her over maintenance issues. while the eviction was resci rescinded, she's still fighting to get a lease. today she's grateful. >> a celebration, all of us in here, the workers are happy and we're giving back to the community. >> i'm homeless in my car right now. robert walsh said it's the first solid meal he's had in a year. his friend told him about the thanksgiving event but he didn't expect this. >> when i was told about this, i was thinking that we were going to maybe a shelter to eat.

and to see this and what she's doing here is -- it's a really good thing. >> reporter: the restaurant served 1200 meals today and gave out hundreds of winter coats, filling bellies and warming hearts on thanksgiving. >> jodi hernandez reporting. what a great story. there are so many great examples of people giving back today. a small san francisco market served up hundreds of meals because the owner says she knows what it's like to be hungry. people lined up outside of duck loi market in the mission district. amanda no and her husband say they've been doing this for seven year. it's grown to the point where they have help from other restaurateurs. their own experience makes them want to give back. >> for me, i would be happy to see people waiting in line like this to be served a warm meal today. because i have been hungry before when i was a poor kid

when i came from vietnam. >> she opened her grocery store and has given back to the community. >> reporter: the ngo family says the first year they started out by serving about 200 meals. now they serve about 1,000 meals on thanksgiving. we've got really nice heartwarming stories. happy thanksgiving, rob. >> likewise. nice one around the bay area. we've got sunshine but it's cold. numbers in the low 40s outside right now and could wake up to a little patchy frost around the tri-valley. let's show you some of those temperatures just after 9:00, in the low 40s from santa rosa, napa, livermore. you can see from san jose, south bay looks mainly clear downtown, dubl dublin, tri-valley. no fog in that view. and from san francisco to the golden gate bridge off in the distance. radar dry for now, but did you aring the day tomorrow we'll see increasing clouds and rain

making a comeback. a one-two punch we'll see this weekend. first rain on the increase, then a system dropping down the coast that will bring probably the coldest air we've seen this fall that will drive the snow levels down. we're not expecting much in the way of rain except for the far north bay. sonoma county could see sprinkles for the morning commute but mainly a dry day as the clouds fill in. highs around san jose in the south bay. still in the low to mid-60s tomorrow. you'll probably see those mild temperatures up along 680 up towards pleasanton. notice how the temperatures begin to drop off and head farther north. you'll see numbers in the upper 50s, low 60s around the peninsula. san francisco close to 60 and into the north bay. you might see a few sprinkles at times and those highs in the upper 50s as we go through friday afternoon. then by this time tomorrow night through early saturday morning, we'll see bigger changes as the rain makes a comeback. 3:00 a.m., now we see the rain

on approach. probably the wettest part of the weekend coming in for saturday especially from the south bay through 9:00 a.m. then cooler air begins to rise. that's where things get interesting. we won't see as much widespread rain saturday into sunday. but as the cooler air rises, you can see snow levels down close to 3500 feet. that's what we'll be watching closely. the wettest part of the weekend, first half on saturday through about noon, widespread rain changing over to chilly showers that will take us into the sunday forecast. a few showers early. then the end of the weekend looking chilly and dry. but keep in mind if you're going to head to the sierra, it will a little bit of tough going. snow down to 3500 feet. probably seeing those snow showers all the way through sunday night. so as things play out, we'll continue to see the rain turning to showers around the coast. monterey, cool as we wrap up the weekend. the seven-day forecast, keep temperatures cool. rain at times for saturday. maybe snow down to 3500 higher

glide in san francisco is a day when everyone comes out. >> it's our way of feeling thankful for everything we got because we're serving 5,000 people. >> individually a chance for me to give back to the community that we serve on a day-to-day basis. this is a way to directly give back. >> reporter: this year more than 500 volunteers joined mayor ed lee and police chief carve up turk es and serve the needy at the church's annual holiday meal giveaway. >> we're able to receive over 500 volunteers participation on the part of people coming together, all kinds of people. >> reporter: he was one of those volunteers. he was homeless not too long ago and spend many thanksgivings at glide. >> they feed three times a day. i was happy with that. then for the beds, overnight shelters, i was really happy for that. >> reporter: things are better for timothy. in fact, he works part time at the church.
