good morning, everybody, welcome to "today in the bay." 7:00, saturday morning. looks like a rainy picture out on the golden gate bridge. if it isn't raining where you are right now, well, you just stick around. it will happen. good morning, thanks for joining us. along with vianey arana, i'm garvin thomas. she's going to take a look at your weather, i'll take care of the news but let's start with that rain. >> very active weather pattern, those winds are picking up

especially near the santa cruz mountains. but right now, if you're just waking up, bundleal up and pour yourself a nice cup of coffee. peninsula, tri-valley, out in the east bay and san francisco in the 50s and we're not really going to warm up. we're going to top out into those upper 50s and stay there. overnight temperatures have been chilly and we are expecting those 40s, maybe even 30s out near the north bay. here are your expected highs for today. only 59 degrees, 58 near the south bay and here's a live look right now at our radar. we are seeing where that red and orangey color, that's more along the santa cruz mountains, that's where they're seeing the strongest downpours and of course those winds that we're going to keep an eye out for but for now, it looks like we are expecting widespread showers throughout the day and we'll have timing on that and how much rain we can expect coming up so, umbrella and warm coat. >> all of them. both this morning. thank you very much, vianey. now, he ruled a one-party state

for almost half a century but as cuban television announced last night, fidel castro is dead at the age of 90. and this is how they reacted last night to the news in miami. cuban-americans and defectors dancing upon hearing the news. castro supporters saw him as a bearded hero in military fatigues who gave cuba back to the people but for millions of cubans forced into exile and for american presidents left to tangle with him, fidel castro was a tyrant who ruled with an iron fist for decades. jessica aguirre looks back on the life of a cuban dictator. >> reporter: for more than four decades, fidel castro was anti-americanism personified. throughout the cold war, the cigar chewing cuban dictator delighted in being a constant thorn in the side of u.s.

presidents. fidel castro's revolution was born in the remote mountains of cuba, his forces sweat into havana on new year's day, 1959. and ousted the u.s.-backed dictator. >> hauchb and her people went wild. they surrounded him, engulfed him, clutched and clawed him. fidel, our liberator. >> reporter: the revolutionary proclaimed his marxist beliefs and forged an alliance with the soviet union, one that would endure for the remainder of the cold war. in 1961, the american invasion at the bay of pigs failed miserably, a major embarrassment for president kennedy. a year later came the cuban missile crisis. during the '70s and ideal 0s, castro had the support of the sovi soviets but there was also unrest at home as thousands of cubans fled to miami on rafts. when soviet union collapsed, so did cuba's economy.

the once robust castro became increasingly fragile, taking a bad stumble in 2004. and as his health became an increasing concern, he turned over power to his brother raul. >> again, that was jessica reporting. cuban state tv says that castro's funeral will take place on december 4 after nine days of national mourning in cuba. his brother, raul castro, says the body will be cremated and his remains will be buried in the eastern city of santiago. news of castro's death sent hundreds of exiles, young and old, in miami into the streets to celebrate. the heart of the cuban diaspora, miami has long called for the end of the communist regime. castro's death seen by many in miami as the bittersweet end of to a painful era that left them separated from their country, home, and family. there are a number of cuban-americans here in the bay area. we spoke to one man who made a

try to protect home in the surrounding neighborhood. it's now the third day of searching for two inmates from the santa clara county jail. these are the fugitives on the run, rogelio chavez with the eye tattoo, and laron campbell are both considered armed and dangerous. the two remain on the run after breaking out of this santa clara main jail window thanksgiving morning. crews are stepping up the searches for the men, using search dogs near levi's stadium, which is near the home of the parents of rogelio chavez. last night, we spoke off camera to chavez's stepfather. he delivered this message to the fugitive, saying, you need to turn yourself in, do the right thing, breaking out was not smart, and go back to jail. santa clara county sheriff laura smith has a message as well for anyone who helps these two men. >> we will find these two, and any person who is harboring or helping or aiding and abetting in their escape, we'll attempt

to prosecute. >> also learned that a hacksaw which was used by the inmates to escape. another one was confiscated months ago on a separate wing we know now the name of the south san francisco police officer who was attacked on thanksgiving. robby chon was hurt when he confronted luis ramos-coreas. ramos-coreas struck officer chon in the head with his skateboard after a brief chase. the police chief said officer chon is still in critical condition. >> the city will not tolerate violence of any nature directed against its police forces. >> ramos-coreas has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer. investigators are calling a deadly fire in san mateo suspicious. take a look. this is the house where a 70-year-old woman died. police say the woman who lived

someone sent a letter to the evergreen islamic center in san jose filled with threats and hate. the letter opened by calling parishioners at the mosque a satan. it makes reference to the election of donald trump as president and how trump is going to cleanse america of muslims ch mosque leaders say they were shocked when they opened the letter on thanksgiving day but were not surprised given the political rhetoric of the election. san jose police are investigating the potential for violence. the mosque says it appreciates the quick response by the police who had officers at the center within minutes. >> given that they have reacted in the way they have reacted with compassion and care, it just blows away. it reinforces the belief in the community. >> the mosque says it warned parishioners to beware but it's not adding extra security. it's glitzy and glamorous, but it's also sinking. and we now have new confirmation from space that the millennium

across the bay area. we're going to have the full details in your forecast in just a couple of minutes. shoppers came out in droves to cash in on those black friday deals yesterday. it started early, even thursday afternoon at some stores, all day, broadway plaza in downtown walnut creek was packed with shoppers but the bay street shopping center in emeryville had fewer crowds. we also found marijuana retailers in oakland that were trying to get a piece of black friday, also called the green friday deals. >> with legalization and the normalization of cannabis, we've kind of taken an approach, as a bit more traditional retail approach, and starting to participate in the same holiday sales. >> and not far from retailers, a push to stop shopping at the emeryville shopping center, which protesters say was built on a sacred indian burial site. and further south, it was

jam packed a sea of red brake lights. nbc recently reported that valley fair blamed the timing of nearby traffic light for a traffic nightmare last weekend. we talked to valley fair leaders who say the lights have been fixed and are no longer a problem. only on nbc bay area, what's really happening with the raiders stadium deal. and is it too late to stop the team from moving to las vegas? the man who wants to keep the raiders in oakland reveals his plans and the money behind it. ronnie lott speaks exclusively to raj. >> reporter: thoughtful and confident, but this might be the biggest challenge of ronnie lott's career. at issue, not just a new stadium for the raiders but also dealing with the political hot potato, a mayor hoping not to lose a jewel of her city and an owner who continues to stay committed to las vegas. >> you've got the buy-in from the mayor and the fans, but not mark davis. why go through with this?

>> because in life, what you try to do is you put something on the table that you hope he can't refuse. that hasn't been the case. and until we are able to do that, then that should be the posture that he should take. he's got something that is very valuable, and that is a bid in las vegas. he doesn't have that here. and until we has that, and i think john madden said it, yeah, they want to stay here. the tough part now, raj, is that time is running out. >> reporter: it's not a matter of months. it's a matter of days. oakland will try to fast track lott's proposal in a closed door session on tuesday. meanwhile, that glistening stadium teal in las vegas has already been approved and casino mogul has pledged more than

we look at a picture of oracle arena. the city has options on the table for the a's. bottom line, we'll know a lot more after tuesday's city council meeting. let's check in now with vianey arana with a look at our wet, cold weekend forecast, three words you never want to put together. >> exactly. but around november it's okay because people like to be indoors enjoying hot chocolate. i've been doing that lately so i don't mind and it gives me something to talk about for the weather. but right now, it is chilly out there, and it's been really chilly the past couple of days if you're just now waking up, you may notice we're seeing overcast skies and expecting showers throughout the day, 50 degrees overall across the area, we are expected to warm up but not by much. we're going to stay in those 50s for the most part, upper 50s at that in terms of our highs for today but we're tracking that kpoeld front, line of storms pushing its way into the bay area and it's going to continue

to push on through until tonight and into sunday's forecast as well so we are expecting widespread showers and where you see that yellow and orange, that's more along the santa cruz mountains so they're definitely getting those gustier winds. let's take a look at your hour by hour forecast. we've seen some showers out in the north bay and of course out near the coastline, san francisco, san jose not seeing a lot of rain just yet. by about 1:30, though, we are expecting a second round of showers and that's actually going to push down all the way down to the south bay, we're talking san jose, palo alto, expecting to see some rain into the afternoon hours, tapering off into the mid afternoon so by about 3:00 to 5:00, we could see a little bit of break in those showers and see a break in between storms before we see another round move in by about 3:00, that's when you're going to get your period of a break, at least for the south bay anyway. out near the north bay, we are expecting to see the majority of that rainfall continue through tonight and into sunday morning, it looks by about 5:30 in the

morning, hopefully most of you are either in home or waking up but if you do have an early morning commute, this could affect that. pretty slick roads out there, so be sure to take extra time before you head out on to the roads. heading into monday, we are seeing another storm that's going to taper off to the north bay and as you head into the early morning hours, into the monday morning commute, we should be seeing a majority of those storms clear out, making way for the majority of a nice workweek ahead but with this storm system, we're also seeing a winter weather advisory for parts of the sierra mountains and what that means is we could be seeing some more snowfall, about 3 to 8 inches above 4,000 feet, so could make for low visibility. to if you are planning to head out or you're already there, stay inside and stay warm. with this system, we're not seeing a high wind advisory but we are seeing some beach hazards and that's going to stay in effect until about 3:00 a.m. we are seeing some pretty decent

swell, about 12 to 14 feet, like i said, our highs for today, we're not going really going to warm up. nice and cold for the majority of the day, which is a good thing for november. now, let's go ahead and take a look at our seven day forecasts as you head into sunday, early morning, stay in the 50s, a nice pattern, a nice shift in those temperatures from those 80s to 70s. now we're dropping down into the 50s which means those overnight lows are also going to be dropping down into those 40s. as we head inland, also expecting that rain to carry on over into sunday. by monday, we could be seeing some early morning showers that are going to be sitting off to the coast that could taper in into the evening hours as well by tuesday, we should be clearing out. wednesday and thursday, those temperatures remain fairly similar also in those upper 50s, lower 60s so today's biggest concern is going to be those breezy to windy conditions, of course rain, so if you do have to be indoors, stay indoors. if you're going to head outdoors, carry an umbrella and don't get caught in the rain. it's going to be a soggy weekend

road and is home safe and sound. still, there are many questions left to be answered. peggy bunker has the story. >> reporter: in the early hours of thanksgiving morning, just after 4:30 a.m., 34-year-old mother of two sherri papini, missing from her family and young children for nearly a month, is spotted on the side of the road on i-5. police radio calls reveal she's badly beaten and shackled. >> she is heavily battered and it is a confirmed kidnapping. >> reporter: dispatchers in disbelief as they relay the message that papini is in chains. a passing driver spotted papini and called 911. she's 150 miles from home, missing since going for a run. her family alarmed when she wasn't there to pick up her children from day care. >> her husband, keith, was immediately responded down to the area, and is remaining at her side. >> reporter: her husband ruled out as a suspect used find my

police arrested four men sunday in strasburg and a fifth in marseilles. officials say the activity on the app suggested they were preparing for an attack. discovered in the raid, automatic weapons, a potential target and a letter pledging loyalty to isis. president-elect donald trump has filled two more top administration posts, one with a fox news analyst. her name is k.t. mcfarland, she's worked with former presidents nixon, ford, and reagan before her time at fox. trump named her the deputy national security adviser. trump campaign adviser donald mcbegan is the house for white house counsel. trump is said to be considering two front runners, former new york mayor rudy giuliani or mitt romney for the secretary of state position. one thing not likely to change right away, the affordable care act. >> we're going to have to

grab that umbrella and bundle up, because it is cold, and it's going to get soggy out there. already saw some rain and we are expecting rain throughout the day. if you're heading out to christmas in the park in downtown san jose, definitely bring a lot of rain gear, 56 degrees right now in the peninsula, out near the tri-valley, 49. that nice chilly start is going to maintain its temperatures throughout the day. we're expecting to climb into those 50s. out near the east bay and san francisco, also overcast, 49 degrees as this cold front pushes in, we're expecting to keep those cooler temperatures in the area. now, 59 degrees in san francisco, half moon bay 57, topping out at 58 in palo alto, so overall, we're expecting periods of showers on and off throughout the day. here's a live look right now at our radar as we begin to see that cold front, this line of storms move in, it is expected to continue pushing inland all day long so let's go ahead and

track that hour by hour forecast. now, early morning into the overnight hours, as it was sitting off the coast, the santa cruz mountains, all the way up to santa rosa and out near oregon, seeing those heavy downpours and of course those stronger winds. now, as we continue to push through the day, by saturday, mid afternoon, by about 3:00 to 5:00, we are expecting those showers to take a break, and we're going to taper off a bit but by sunday at 6:00 a.m., we're seeing a second storm arrival. so if you have an early morning commute, take some extra time. all the way down to san jose, also expecting to see a lot of rain as we head into sunday morning. fast forward through sunday night and into monday morning, another line of storms moves in into early morning, expecting some pretty decent downpours, san francisco, down to soejs, not really going to see a lot of rain, mainly going to stick off to the north bay, but by monday evening, that storm does make its exit and it's going to clear the way for a nice dryer pattern

into the upcoming workweek. estimated rain totals for tonight, as we head into saturday evening, we're expecting just about a half inch of rain in palo alto, in redwood city, half inch, also minnear s jose, under half an inch, maybe even a foot of actually rain as we head into napa, a little bit over 1/2 inch and as we head into sunday, that's when those rain totals increase and we get another chance of storms into the overnight hours and that's going to bring more rain into the bay area, sticking around until monday. with this storm system, we're also tracking a winter weather adviser which will be in effect until about 10:00 a.m. and that could bring low visibility, anywhere between 3 to 8 inches above 4,000 feet so if you're going to head out there or if you're heading to the beach, may want to hold off because there is a beach hazard that will remain in effect until sunday at about 3:00 and we're seeing some pretty high waves out there, some pretty dangerous surf so

you may want to hold off on that. over the next seven days, we're going to see that pattern stick around through sunday as the storm system continues to roll on through the forecast, those temperatures will remain in the 50s, by monday. that early morning rain should clear out into the afternoon. by tuesday, all that's going to be left behind is going to be those clouds, and by wednesday and thursday, we should be clearing out, making way for a much dryer, sunnier weather forecast. not just in san francisco but also inland. inland, we are expecting to see that rain in the south bay and downtown san jose on and off so it's, remember, it's going to be periods of heavy rainfall, periods of break in sunshine so it's going to be a combination of both so if you are going to be outside, make sure to keep an umbrella handy and of course bundle up because these 50s are not going anywhere. we warm up to the 60s but all in all, it's going to be a nice week of november-like temperatures so it's finally going to start feeling like christmas already around here. i'll send things back to you. >> vianey, thank you very much. much more ahead on "today in the
