road has cleared. back to you. >> thank you very much. we begin with breaking nous this morningment one of two inmates that escaped from the santa clara county main jail has been found and captured. he was caught in the east bay last night after six nights on the run. we were the first to bring you the escape as breaking news on thanksgiving morning. "today in the bay's" chris sanchez joins us from the santa clara county jail where laron campbell started, and we're expecting him to come back there soon. >> reporter: we're expecting him to arrive back at the santa clara county jail where this whole ordeal started a week ago today. this is where he will be returned. he was booked immediately into the santa rita jail after he was arrested last night. in hours we expect the sheriff's department will expect to find out how he was got there and was arrested without incident last night. as he was cuffed last night, neighbors were watching. here is what one neighbor had to say.

>> it was kind of scare ri because you don't really expect that kind of stuff to happen when you're sitting outside and you see a whole bunch of cop cars and a bunch of officers in full gear. it's a little nerve-racking. >> reporter: we were first on the air to report the jailbreak thanksgiving morning after campbell, rogelio chavez and two other inmates cut through the bars of their second story cell and repelled down on a rope of clothing and bed sheets. two of the inmates were back in a sell immediately. tips led santa clara county deputies to swarm this gas station at 7th and keys around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. that's where someone called in a tip saying they spotted chavez drinking water from a hoez outside. that ended up being a bust. at this gilroy hotel they arrested 35-year-old emily vacca

who admitted she was helping chavez while he was on the run. chavez is at large, but with $20,000 in reward money for information leading to his arrest, the public is watching and the sheriff's department says they're definitely talking. there's a press conference for later this morning. we are tracking the comings and goings here at the main jail because we want to watch laron campbell make it back inside. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." breaking news we're following on the peninsula. chp officers involved in a wild chase overnight on a major freeway. "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us from redwood city where the chase ended. bob, two people are now arrested? >> reporter: good morning, sam, yes. both the passenger and the driver of this speeding car both taken into custody after they tried to hide in the caltrans equipment yard off 280 near farm hill boulevard on the peninsula.

chp tells us around 2:20 this morning, one of the officers pulled over a black acura because he was speeding and the registration expired. as the officer approached the car, the driver sped off south down to highway 280 with chp in pursuit. at one point according to chp, speeds reached 110 miles an hour. a few minutes later, the driver exited off 280 at farm hill, got back on to the interstate and had some sort of engine trouble. both men ran across the freeway to the caltrans yard. chp is looking into whether the passenger is a wanted parolee. live in the peninsula, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much. we're also following breaking news out of the east bay. some kind of police activity in antioch. we're not sure what exactly it is. you see the twin creeks apartment there.

this is video from the scene. officers are on winding way not far from hillcrest avenue. witnesses at the scene reported seeing crime tape. right now deputies are offering few details. we'll work on getting you more information as soon as we have it. house minority leader nancy pelosi faces critical tests today. house democrats will vote on giving her another term or passing the gavel to someone else. specifically that could be ohio representative tim ryan. ryan believes the results of the recent presidential election calls for change in the democratic leadership. pelosi has been the house democratic leader for 12 years. we'll bring you a live report from tracie potts in washington in our next hour. speaking out right now. the husband of the northern california woman who says she was kidnapped says he is disg t disgusted by people questioning the legitimacy of his wife's disappearance. >> nbc's gadi schwartz is in redding with more on the investigation into what happened.

>> reporter: good morning laura and sam. we're here in redding, california, where we're taking a look at the kidnapping of sheri papini. we'll talk to investigators about the statement released yesterday by her husband in which he described the injuries he suffered during her three weeks in captivity. he described seeing her in the hospital bed after she had been branded, she had been starved and tortured. we or also going to talk to investigators about several clues including one clue in particular that they say they just can't figure out. investigators are now speaking to different investigators in other states about other possible cases that have similarities to this kidnapping. you're going to hear about all of that coming up in our live report. back to you guys. >> gadi, appreciate the update. we'll have the full report coming up on the "today" show this morning right after "today in the bay." it is 5:06 right now. parents in napa asking a lot of questions after police report indicated some kind of campus

assault involving high school football players. so far police and napa high school are being vague about what happened. they're investigating an incident last night in the high school parking lot where at least one player was physically assaulted by fellow teammates. we spoke with a parent who didn't want to show her face on camera. she believes she knows why students singled out one of their own. >> a freshman was moved up to jv and other kids were jealous. >> a member from the team had grabbed on to to another and hit him. >> they're not indicating if this was a hazing incident. so far no action has been taken against any student. >> happening right now, a cold weather warning in the south bay. an inclement weather episode, temperatures could drop into the 30s in some areas. county officials are expanding the number of shelters available for people. the weather warning is going to last threw at least saturday.

>> even looking beyond saturday, it looks very cold early next week. right now as you step out, it's 36 degrees in livermore. san jose it's 41, oakland 47 and 48 in san francisco. along with this chilly air, we also have some cloudy skies and some light rain starting to move into the north bay. as we track that rain it's been very scattered and now moving into parts of sonoma and napa county, also approaching solano county. this is what we'll be watching over the next couple hours. most of that rain staying to the north. but still a chance as we go into the rest of the day. and highs reaching into the upper 50s to right at about 60 degrees into the next several days, it gets a little milder but then those temperatures really drop early next week. i'll talk more ability that in about ten minutes, heading over to mike, more info on the crash in oakland. >> that's right, kari. i told folks we'd check on that.

have some wet roads as times, and the rain starting to taper off as we go through the rest of the day. but now it's in the low 40s, very chilly, 36 degrees in the tri-valley. north bay 42 degrees in san francisco, 47. highs today reaching the upper 50s pretty much across the board with cloudy skies and light rain possible. bring the umbrella just in case. the hour-by-hour forecast shows we'll see the green and light rain moving into the peninsula, the south bay later this afternoon and then late tonight the skies clear, turns cool once again and friday we'll have a clear start as well as some chilly temperatures that will lead us into the weekend. over the next several days, not a lot of action going on here. this weekend mostly clear skies, looking good. the negligent weather system moves in, a cold front passing through on monday will bring us cold air and a chance of rain late next week. until then we have mainly dry

kill a raccoon and kay oh tea in golden gate park and documenting all of it. the d.a.'s office says the couple could be facing felony animal abuse charges as a result. this could be a double dose of pain for oakland fans. the city could be losing two sports teams. obviously the fight is on to keep the raiders. the warriors are on the way out. >> they cleared the major hurdle in moving to san francisco. yesterday the california state of appeals upheld a previous decision validating the environmental impact report for the team's proposed waterfront arena near at&t park. the warriors hope to break ground in a few months. a group called the mission bay alliance who argued the report was flawed released this statement, quote, we are deeply disappointed with the court ruling. our legal team is reviewing the rumg and considering options. we believe the proposed warriors arena is incompatible with the mission bay south neighborhood. a san francisco man says he was wrongfully penalized on his

"today in the bay's" tracie potts joining us from washington, d.c. many are calling for a change after the presidential election. >> reporter: exactly. take a look at the electorate. it was more rural, more working class, not necessarily people who were always attracted to a liberal from a big city like san francisco. so this secret ballot today could put nancy pelosi's job as minority leader at risk after more than a decade in that leadership position, she could become the representative from the bay area but not that larger leadership role for the democrats. the secret ballot which was put off before thanksgiving is now happening. her challenge coming from ohio representative tim ryan who some democrats think have more appeal to white rural america that made up a big part of the electorate in this last election. make no mistake, this is all about looking toward the next election, democrats trying to

a tragic accident that took the life of this employee during the show, preparations for the cirque du soleil show in san francisco. still trying to determine exactly the details on it. we know the show was canceled last night as a result. according to the team, they say a show technician was struck by a forklift. that technician was taken to sf general where he died of his injuries. for anyone who has attended these shows, we know it's an elaborate production and they have these large sets. this show here, lucia is following the same tradition. they said it is with immense sadness that we report a fatal accident that occurred during the preset of the show, luzia. one of our employees, a technician on the show, was struck by a lift and passed away from his injuries. we cannot confirm the identity as his family is yet to be reached. we'll update with you more

"the chronicle" said a witness said the suspect was yelling and behavinger radially before a showing of "allied." another witness said the man stayed seated as others ran out. police arrived quickly taking the man into custody. the theater was then closed for the night. contra costa health officials, the county health officials are urging the public to throw out any leftovers from a community thanksgiving meal that killed three and sickened more than a dozen people in

antioch. 17 people have become seriously ill. that is up from the five originally reported. all of the victims ate thanksgiving dinner at the american legion hall organized by the golden hills community church. the parish has been serving holiday meals for decades. >> if it was from us, we want to fix it. if it was president from us, we still want to help the people who are hurting. >> the sheriff's department is conducting autopsies on the three people who died. caltrain is launching what it hopes will be a potentially lifesaving move, addressing the difficult subject of suicides. suicides on caltrain tracks along the peninsula have gotten national attention. today the agency is announcing a new partnership with crisis text line that offers free anonymous counseling services any time. details on that partnership are going to be laid out later today at a news conference. >> the time now is 5:38. good wednesday morning. here is a live look outside in

oakland. all clear skies. we're tracking light showers nearby, and now in oakland it's a cool rain in those spots. 47 degrees. a high today will reach 59, and once again this system moving in, not bringing a widespread shower. but you will have that chance as we go through the day and in some spots before we do see the rain, it's been quite heavy at times, now moving east of fairfield. we've been tracking that, and also spotty rain for parts of the north bay. elsewhere we've seen the rain passing by. so expect a slight chance of that moving through. otherwise mostly cloudy, highs today in the upper 50s. it will be fairly cool today. over the next few days it gets a little better with sunshine and then it really gets cold early next week. i'll talk about that coming up in about ten minutes. mike has an update on crashes in oakland and danville. >> we'll take danville first. that's where we see the slowing on the sensors. none from the south bay except

million in new legal assistance funding for undocumented immigrants. president-elect trump has promised to take away funding from cities that don't follow federal immigration laws. today was supposed to be the championship match. instead, no match and so soccer team. as you see right know, investigators assessing the crash yesterday carrying a brazilian soccer team. it went down in colombia monday night right before it was supposed to land. among the images we're seeing now, the few players not on the flight in shock, as are many fans around the world right now. only 6 of the 77 people on board survived that crash. vigils and moments of silence were held last night. a flight attendant told rescuers that the plane ran out of fuel. in a heartwarming gesture, the colombian team that was supposed to play tomorrow says the championship should be awarded to that brazilian team. also, there is devastation this morning in tennessee.

this wildfire that has ravaged the area, at least three people confirmed dead. the fire still burning near the great smoky mountain national park, the most visited national park in the country. 150 homes and businesses have so far have burned. high winds have fueled the flames. more than 14,000 people had to evacuate as a result. investigators say that fire might have been started by a person. they're looking into it. 5:46 right now. palo alto cleaning up after pigeons. the animals are hanging out in the rafters of this embarcadero road underpass. the stench was said to be so bad some neighbors complained to the city. so now palo alto will shut down the road for seven nights to clean up the area. >> cleanliness is really important. i think there's risk of disease when you have pigeon poop on the bridge. so i think it's a great idea. >> the city is pigeon-proofing the underpass so the pigeons

will no longer roost in the rafters. the federal government is finding out the good deal giving to students is too good of a deal. >> laura and sam, one o of the best deals out there is a deal where college grads pay back 10% of their disposable income for 20 years, and then after 20 years, the rest of the student loan is forgiven, even if you haven't finished paying it back. a report due out later today says these deals mean the federal government will forgive more than $108 billion in loans just over the next few years. that $108 billion figure is way, way more than washington expected. the "wall street journal" says the general accounting office has shocked people with that number. the report will also take the department of education to task for far underestimating the cost. this started as a way to help kids. the obama administration pushed

warm. we will continue on with cold mornings over the next few days. do what you have to do and maybe grab the umbrella as well. we will have a slight chance of rain moving through. here is a live look outside in san francisco. the clouds are starting to move in. as far as what you're seeing now, it's still dry. look at that temperature. it's only 49 degrees, heading up to 57. and the clouds will continue to roll in. light rain possible. the rest of the week, though, it will be all clear, some moral cool mornings and some mild afternoons. this week end is looking so nice. go ahead and make some plans to get outside. we will have highs near 60 degrees. a live look outside san jose, starting to get busy. looking at quite a bit of business here as far as radar, green popping up. we will continue to see light rain. it's also approaching oakland at this point and over toward richmond. then we have some rain that just moved through concord. so it could be wet at times. also as you head out for that

morning commute, and the rain moving from north to south. by the time it gets to the south bay later today at about 4:00, 5:00, it will quickly pass. and then skies will clear. and then for tomorrow, cool, cold start on friday as well. so not enough going on after this passes. it's not really that strong. this is a weak system. but there will be another one moving through that doesn't look to bring us much in the way of any rain, but a big chill for the start of next week. then we may not see any significant rain in this forecast until about next thursday. it's not good as far as how much rain we'll see. as far as cold air, you'll see a big difference. looking at the forecast in the seven days, in san francisco, how about upper 30s to start next week? that's what we could be dealing with and even freezing temperatures for the inland valleys. this weekend is really looking nice. make sure you get out there and enjoy it. heading over to mike, he's updating us on the danville

crash. >> that's right. 680 was a concern because we see a build for the volume around the bay. you showed the live camera where we have slowing in san jose. we'll talk about that in a second and also talk about what popped up at the coliseum. but this continues to be on the shoulder. two lanes still reported blocked southbound 680 in danville. two lanes were reported blocked by a crew that arrived on scene to assist with minor injuries. that will be an issue as the commute builds through that area. a smooth flow approaching the bay bridge. slower for the eastshore freeway and the bay bridge metering lights are on. 4 minutes from highway 4 to the bay braj. i'm checking for the disabled vehicle reported around 66. that's the over crossing that blocks out the lights right there. we don't see slowing or problems. i'll continue to track that as well. we're also talking about your travel times. traveling through the south bay, despite the bunch of headlights kari showed you and the slowing

children's hospital. groundbreaking for the last undeveloped site at santano row. construction for 700 santano row, a 284,000 square foot office building that will anchor the end of the mixed use neighborhood. that groundbreaking is 11:00 a.m. new details in the case of a former police officer charged with killing an unarmed black man in charleston, south carolina. you probably remember this one, former officer michael schrager testified yesterday during the murder trial against him. he's charged in the shooting death of walter scott which took place last year. schrager said he stopped him for a broken taillight and he chased after them. police dash cam video shows the initial stop and both men running. cell phone later later captures the moment when scott was shot. he says he felt his life was threatened and now he has nightmares and can't sleep. so far no injuries have been reported from this large

pipeline explosion in missouri. this happened yesterday in plat county. the company was transporting an ethane-propane mix from kansas. the cause of the fire is under investigation. hundreds of people gathered to say good-bye to a homeless veteran whom many never met. the large crowd candle the service in wyoming. the coroner had trouble locating his family. so she asked people in the community to attend his funeral. the story went viral prompting people to travel to that funeral from all over. the coroner eventually tracked down the man's sister who received the flag at the service. she said she's grateful her brother didn't die alone. >> i'm so grateful -- i never, ever expected a turnout like this or all that i've been

we have the clouds overhead. that will make it warm up just a little bit as we go through the day. also tracking some light rain moving through parts of the bay area. here is the storm system we're talking about. it's very weak, but it will bring in a slight chance of rain. we're already seeing that coming down in parts of the north bay heading towards richmond and oakland and passing through parts of the delta. as that moves through, you have a wet commute for some spots, also right at about 680 near san ramon, we see a heavy downpour moving through there. any rain that you see today will be a quick one and done. it's more cold than anything. it's only 43 in san jose. check out morgan hill. dropped down to 34 degrees. we'll talk about all of that coming up in the microclimate forecast. mike is tracking more slow spots. >> part of the rain went through danville. we have a crash i'm tracking there. not the most significant slowing. we're looking over here towards south 680 sou
