that will make it warm up just a little bit as we go through the day. also tracking some light rain moving through parts of the bay area. here is the storm system we're talking about. it's very weak, but it will bring in a slight chance of rain. we're already seeing that coming down in parts of the north bay heading towards richmond and oakland and passing through parts of the delta. as that moves through, you have a wet commute for some spots, also right at about 680 near san ramon, we see a heavy downpour moving through there. any rain that you see today will be a quick one and done. it's more cold than anything. it's only 43 in san jose. check out morgan hill. dropped down to 34 degrees. we'll talk about all of that coming up in the microclimate forecast. mike is tracking more slow spots. >> part of the rain went through danville. we have a crash i'm tracking there. not the most significant slowing. we're looking over here towards south 680 sought of sunol where the volume is starting to play a

factor be your commute. same for 880 southbound. both areas have your typical slowing. getting over the water, we have reports of a stall updated to a slow roller westbound on 92 heading toward the high-rise. that may slow you down a bit. still only 15 minutes across that span. not bad for this time of day. back to you. we begin with breaking news this morning. one of the two inmates that escaped from the santa clara county main jail has been found and captured. he was caught in the east bay after six nights on the run. we were the first to bring you the escape as breaking news on thanksgiving morning. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from the santa clara county jail in san jose where the inmates started out, kris. we're expecting him to arrive soon. >> reporter: good morning. we've steaked out the entrance to the santa clara county main jail hoping to get laron campbell back to where this jailbreak started, a week ago

today. we also expect to hear from the santa clara county sheriff's department hoping to reveal details about how agents tracked campbell to antioch where he was arrested without incident last night. he was cussed at 9:00 last night. neighbors were watch iing. >> it's kind of scary because you don't expect that stuff to happen when you're sitting outside and you see a bunch of cop cars and officers in full gear. it's a little nerve-racking. >> reporter: we were first on the air to report the jailbreak thanksgiving morning hours after campbell, rogelio chavez and two other inmates cut through the steel bars and repelled down on clothing and bed sheets. two were apprehended immediately and back in the cell that day. chavez and campbell took off. acting on a tip yesterday afternoon, santa clara county deputies swarmed a gas station at 7th and kooes.

on monday deputies ascended on a gilroy hotel where they arrested 35-year-old emily vaca of san jose who admitted to helping chavez while he was on the run. chavez is still at large this morning, but with $20,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest, the public is definitely watching, and accordings to the santa clara county sheriff's department, they're also talking, getting a lot of tips on possible sightings. we hope to hear the latest on the manhunt for him and get the details of laron campbell's arrest later this morning, going to the sheriff's department later this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you tore the latest there, kris. also following breaking news on the peninsula this morning. chp officers involved in a wild police chase overnight. this is new video just in to our newsroom this morning. "today in the bay's" bob redell is in redwood city where that chase ended. bob, we understand two people were arrest ed.

>> reporter: correct. chp arrested the driver of that speeding car and his passenger after both men tried to hide in this caltrans equipment yard off 280 at the farm hill boulevard exit. chp tells us around 2:20 this morning, one of the officers pulled over the driver of a black acura because he had been speeding and the registration on the car was expired. as the officer approached the vehicle, the driver sped off southbound on highway 280 with chp in pursuit. at one point speeds reached 110 miles an hour. a few minutes later the driver exited off 280 in farm hill, got off the interstate and had engine trouble. the car became disabled. both men ran across the freeway to the caltrans yard. both men were arrested with no one getting hurt. chp is looking into whether that passenger is a wanted parolee. live on the peninsula, bob redell, "today in the bay."

bob, thank you very much. coming up on 6:05. also new this morning, emergency crews on the peninsula responded to an accident early this morning that appears to involve a car and a pedestrian. for a while this shut down traffic at el camino real in san bruno near the golden gate national cemetery. witnesses say there were clear signs that a pedestrian had been struck. no real indication the driver had stayed at the scene. so far san bruno police have not issued any kind of statement. there's some kind of police activity this morning happening in antioch. this is video just in from the scene. officers at a home on winding way, not far from hillcrest avenue. witnesses at the scene reported seeing crime tape. right now deputies are offering no details. we'll update you as soon as we get more information. prayers continuing right now for a local police officer injured on the job. now the man accused of critically injuring that police officer with a skateboard last week during a chase is expected

to enter a plea in court. here is the good news, south san francisco officer robby chon who suffered major head injuries after being hit with the skateboard on thanksgiving day, doctors say he's showing signs of recovery. he was responding to reports of a man acting irate. investigators say the suspect struck chon with a skateboard during that commute. the husband of a woman kidnapped said he's disgusted with people questioning whether her disappearance was real or not. >> gadi schwartz has more on what happened. >> reporter: we are here in redding, california, where we're taking a look at the kidnapping of sherri papini. we'll talk to investigators released yesterday by her husband in which he described the injuries his wife discovered. he described seeing her in the hospital bed after she had been branded, she had been starved

happening now, as we see the chilly temperatures starting to set in, there's a cold weather warning in the south bay. an inclimt weather episode has been issued. temps could drop into the 30s in some parts of the bay area. county officials are expanding the number of shelters available for people who need it. the weather warning lasts through at least saturday. not only is it cold, but we do have some rain. time now is 6:08. we're tracking the showers moving through on the radar, approaching the bay area. you can see that the rain has been very hit or miss. mostly over the north bay and now starting to move into the east bay as well. also in the peninsula, as we get a closer look, light rain moving through pacifica, and as you go down 280 north of woodside, rain falling there. also around oakland, just moving through richmond, we see the rain moving farther off to the east around tassajara, showers approaching and also in brent wood. watching out for the spotty rain. look how cold it is.

it's 38 in livermore. 48 in oakland, 34 in morgan hill while we do have mid 40s in napa, going to get much colder in the forecast. i'll talk about that. it's coming up in less than ten minutes. mike has an update on a crash in danville. >> that's right. i wanted to show you 680, but i just got word of a crash in hayward. get a look at your screen. no surprises for the south bay. that's easing up as is the pattern. the peninsula moving well at speed. hayward, south 880 and 92, just got word of a crash involving three vehicles. hey may still be in the middle of the roadway. it used happened. we expect more slowing as that is where the volume increases right now. looking over here, some improvement for san ramon into danville, southbound 680 at crow canyon, looks like everything has cleared to the shoulder. the slowing we saw has cleared up for that area. >> smooth drive for the bay bridge, not a problem for the upper east bay. the south bay, slowing 101 at 680, 16 minutes to the airport.

approaching concord. as you go toward discovery bay, a moderate downpour that will last only a few minutes. it's route now 38 degrees in the tri-valley. sunrise happening, shortly right under an hour, and the peninsula 44 degrees. the san francisco area, 49 degrees with today's high reaching 58 in the peninsula. once again, some spotty rain and the north bay today up to 58 degrees. slightly cooler than average. into the next few days, after this moves through, it will be all clear in san francisco, a beautiful weekend headed our way. early next week it is going to be cold. enjoy this weekend, major change is on the way. also changing, the road conditions out there. mike how is it looking on the bay bridge? >> we're watching for the effects of any nuisance rain, but so far no impact reported by chp. this is more of a nuisance, the big rig reported stalled blocking one lane. westbound was jamming up right around the bend there. you still see a slower drive. part of that is an optical

illusion. part may be a truck right here approaching the trez your island tunnel. back to your maps, you see there are no problems getting to the bridge. this may cause the metering lights to slow down. we may see more problems for the maze. look how light it is this morning. also toward the walnut creek interchange. smooth flow of traffic for the rest of the bay. in hayward we continue to follow this crash leaving four vehicles in the middle of the roadway as chp arrives to hopefully push them toward the shoulder. the warriors one step closer to leaving oakland. the major hurdle they clear as they look to san francisco. >> "nbc bay area responds" this morning. >> he overpaid the government and thinks he's do a refund. is he? i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. suratos joins. the staff really shaken up by all this. >> good morning, sam and laura. a tough time for the cirque du soleil staff. according to a statement they're saying this deceased employee was struck by a forklift. as you mentioned, you showed the shot from the chopper, it would take place in the white tents behind me. it was a show technician, that's what the cirque team was saying struck by the lift around 7:00 p.m. the nbc bay area team has been digging through past records with the u.s. department of labor, occupational safety and health administration, commonly referred to as osha. it looks like the company has been cited for four violations in the past four years nationwide. with none of those violations were in california. in 2013 a performer fell nearly 1 o 00 feet /* /- -- 100 feet

after her wire shredded. they're not ideaing this employee. cal osha will be handling this investigation moving forward. we're live in san francisco. pete suratos for "today in the bay." let's stay now in san francisco. quite a square yesterday for people going to the movies doing shopping. police evacuated the popular metreon after a man pulled out a gun in the theater. police swarmed the venue at fourth and mission a little before 8:00 at night. "the chronicle" is reporting a witness said the suspect was yelling and behaving erratically as the previews were wrapping up before a showing of "allied." another witness says after the suspect pulled the gun, the man stayed seated as other people were running out of the theater. one patron who had been hoping to see the late show instead felt lucky he wasn't inside when all this went down. >> scary. glad i wasn't there.

pelosi another term or pass the gavel to someone else. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts has a close eye on the critical vote. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the voting is under way behind me at the capitol as we speak. house democrats determining whether nancy pelosi will remain as minority leader. she's had the job for more than a decade. but now, especially after this last election, some democrats think it's time for a change. she's facing a challenge from ohio representative tim ryan who comes from an area with working class people, more similar to many of the people who voted for donald trump in this last election as democrats try to reposition themselves for two years from now for the midterm elections. mick no mistake that's what this is all about and whether or not the democrats feel they need new leadership to make gains in the house. pelosi promised about --

expected about 25 more democrats. so far they've picked up about six seats. still some districts, believe it or not, that are still counting. it's not where they wanted to be. the central question seems to be can a big city liberal democrat appeal to many of those rural working class voters who were such a force in this last election, or are they more attracted to someone like tim ryan. one important thing here, nancy pelosi raises a lot of money for democrats, $141 million in this last election cycle. she goes away, some of that faund raising could go away as well. the voting is under way right now for that and several other leadership positions. we're told it could take several hours, possibly into mid afternoon but that we may get some bored about the leader position in the next hour, hour and a half. back to you. we'll certainly cover that. thank you very much, tracy. 6:37. also happening today, president-elect trump launching a new tour, a victory tour.

he plans to visit at least some of the states that sent him into office. tonight he visits cincinnati, hoo i high and other venues expected to be announced. in the meantime trump's cabinet selections include steve mnuchin the treasury secretary position. happening "today in the bay" area, a protest is planned against stephen bannon and his role in the donald trump presidency. trump appointed bannon as senior counsel earlier this month. a group of jewish activists will protest. bannon was a founding member of the controversial breitbart news organization. the protest starts at 4:30 this afternoon on california stleet in san francisco. if tragedy hadn't struck, today would have been the championship match. instead, no match and no soccer team. right now investigators are

taking a close look at the black boxes recovered from the deadly plane crash carrying a brazilian cocker team. it went down in colombia late monday night right before it was supposed to land. the few players who were not on the flight, in shock as are so many soccer fans around the world. only six of the 77 people on board that plane survived the crash. vigils and moments of silence were held last night. a flight attendant told rescuers that the plane ran out of fuel. in a heartwarming gesture, the colombian team that was supposed to play tomorrow says the championship should be awarded to the brazilian team. caltrain today is launching what it hopes will be a potentially lifesaving move addressing the difficult subject of suicides along the corridor that has seen more than its share. in some cases suicides along caltrain tracks along the peninsula have gotten national attention. the non-profit partnership

jose, the sun is coming up, and we also have some clouds, in santa clara at 9:00, 49 degrees. cooler than average with highs today only reaching the upper 50s and some spotty rain. we'll take a closer look at the radar in about five minutes. >> a moogt drive around the bay, 25 minutes, better from 238 to the dumbarton bridge. that's the bottom of the screen to the nimitz. a crash has cleared in hayward. a better drive across the bay bridge now. the fbi is investigating the hack that shut down muni pay stations over the weekend. a spokesperson for muni says the ransomware hack shut down emergency ex-mail and payroll. demanded a ransom of roughly $73,000 to release the computers. the specs person says the computers were compromised when someone clicked on a link delivered in an e-mail. 6:45. when it comes to remaining a

sanctuary city, san francisco is showing no signs of backing down from possible friction with the donald trump presidency. san francisco supervisors joined immigrants rights supporters on the steps of city hall ahead of the supervisors meeting. that's where board member david compose called for $5 million in funding for undocumented immigrants. president trump promised to take away funding from cities that don't follow immigration laws. a disturbing case of animal cruelty. the d.a.'s office says this couple could face felony animal abuse charges. at least three people have died because of a wildfire still burning near the great smoky mountain park in tennessee. 150 homes and businesses have burned so far around that resort

area, and more than 14,000 people have had to evacuate. investigators say the fire could have been started by a person. bait packages containing gps trackers will be placed at homes and businesses throughout the city. once that package is stolen, police will get an alert and they can track down the thief. as we told you earlier this week, campbell is also using that program. >> we've been talking a lot about package thieves you need to look out for. scott mcgrew says there's another problem. >> a new twist to an old trick. security experts warning hackers are using fake amazon e-mails to fish customers, sending out e-mails that look like they're coming from amazon but are, in fact, fake. they'll say something like, regarding your recent order. since everybody is ordering things from amazon this time of year, you're that much more likely to open it.

it sends you to a fake amazon site, you enter your password, the grinch wins another one. same warnings we always give you, pay attention to the e-mail address, pay attention to the web address or simply go to amazon.com yourself. you know that's going to be legit. see if there are actually messages about your delivery. the "wall street journal" reports the bay area's gopro is laying off again, 200 people this time. it laid off in january as well. gopro recently recalled a drone. we understand 200 people will lose their jobs. gopro stock is up 4% this morning. that's totally normal. lay-offs are welcomed on wall street. you know what else wall street likes? high oil prices. the dow is up 100 points on high oil prices. in fact, it's at a record. later this morning the general accounting office will release a report on student loans saying the government far, far underestimated the cost of loan forgiveness, miscalculating by tens of billions of dollars.

several hours. right now it's in the upper 40s. high temperature expected to reach 57 degrees. here is what to expect, clouds roll in. cool and clear mornings. this weekend will be nice, sunny with highs near 60 degrees. even warmer for the inland areas. yeah, we have to get there. some rain moving through. spotty showers moving through the north bay and the east bay. the rain we've seen over the pngs so far has been a very quick and spotty shower, but we go over toward vacaville and then toward concord where the rain has had a little bit more coverage, so the roads may be wet. not only that, you have to bundle up because we're starting out in the 30s and lower 40s, upper 40s for san francisco and oakland and 38 degrees in the tri-valley. 43 degrees with highs today reaching the upper 50s.

getting a quick look at all of that today, 57 degrees. then once this clears out, we will have some cool air settling in, so more cold mornings and sunny afternoons into the weekend. this weekend once again is looking pleasant into the next ten days, no major changes here, in fact, our weather stays mostly dry as high pressure builds and our weather system stays well to the north. in the seven-day forecast in san francisco, highs in the upper 50s, weekend looking nice. not as much rain and cool next week. we could be talking about freezing temperatures in the valleys. heading to mike, what's happening on the roads? >> a lighter volume of traffic that we'll see probably through the end of the year. we're tracking another crash in hayward. there's the south bay with the northbound routes through san jose. we had recovery through hayward. now a new crash south 880 at wynt wynton. this may slow you a tad bit. a better speed coming off the

arrested in antioch last night. the second inmate, rogelio chavez, is still on the run. there's a $20,000 reward offered for information that leads to his arrest. live now to the santa clara county main jail this morning where we're expecting the captured inmate campbell to be brought there from contra costa county. we'll continue to monitor the jail and update you through out the "today" show which is coming up in minutes at 7:00 a.m. on the run and flying through the peninsula. wraeking news overnight, authorities arrested two suspects after a chaotic early morning high-speed chase on interstate 280 where speeds reportedly reached 110 miles an hour. chp says that chase started during a traffic stop, went seven miles before the car pulled over. chp says the suspects then ran across the freeway lanes into a nearby caltrans yard. that's where officers nabbed the pair. one of the suspects is said to

be a parole lee at large. we've been reporting breaking news since we came on air at 4:30. officers are on the scene of a home on winding way, not far from hillcrest avenue. we're expecting more information this morning on this homicide investigation. we'll bring it to you on our midday newscast at 11:00 a.m. emergency crews in the peninsula responding to an accident early this morning. it appears to have involved a car and a pedestrian. for a while this accident shut down traffic at el camino real in san bruno not to far from the golden gate national cemetery. witnesses say there were clear skiens a pedestrian had been struck and no real indications the driver had stayed at the scene. so far san bruno police haven't issued a statement. 6:57, developing news in san francisco, a deadly accident prompted the cancellation of last night's cirque du soleil at at&t park. a show technician was struck by a lift before the show. san francisco fire transported
