that's all gone today. >> new weather. at least we or getting rid of the clouds and the mist and the drizzle that we had that measured to be about .10 inch in san francisco. look at the low visibility now in the tri-valley. it's only 37 degrees. 44 in the peninsula and 47 in san francisco. into this afternoon, it will feel so much nicer. we'll talk about that and look ahead to the weekend coming up. heading over to mike, you have an update for the tri-valley? >> concern for the low clouds and fog and possibility for lower visibility at teams. we also had a disabled vehicle reported, two adults, two kids reported in lanes. update from chp, they made their weigh to a center divide and a crew is heading out to help them out. we don't have anymore issues as far as the speeds go. the live camera in dublin shows low clouds lingering around despite the easy drive. a little build there and a little slowing in the southbound

commute direction and approaching the bay bridge. 24 minutes. only slowing through san pablo and a clear drive through berkeley and the bay bridge metering lights. >> looks good. breaking news. a standoff is over in washington state after an officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. the shooter then barricaded himself inside a home with two kids en side for several hours overnight before police were able to get to him and kill him. we're told the children are doing okay this morning and it comes after a police officer was shot last night as he was responding to a domestic disturbance. he was shot several times and later died at the hospital. the officer had been with the tacoma police department for 17 years. he was 45 years old. this is the first police officer to die in the line of duty in tacoma since 1997. breaking now. we're getting word that buzz aldrin who in 1969 became one of the first men to the moon was

rushed away from his trip to the north pole. while it's not clear what happened, the tour company said his condition, quote, deteriorated during that trip to the south pole. within the last few minutes we learned aldrin was placed on a flight from the south pole to an antarctic base. his decision right now is described as stable. our network producers are working the story. we'll send out a mobile push alert as soon as we get more information. the great escape is officially over. both inmates on the run for nearly a week are behind bars. this is a story we've been following closely since it broke on thanksgiving morning. rogelio chavez was caught around 8:20. that's him in silhouette being walked out of a house. he was taken into custody just a day after the other fugitive, laron campbell was nabbed in antioch. our cameras were rolling as

chavez was taken into custody at the home near coy park. the home belonged to a friend of his. the sheriff says at one point chavez hid in the at tk and his co-conspirator did in antioch, but' vice presidentially deputies discovered him and he was taken into custody without a fight. this lends the week-long search for that escape pee. >> thank the en credible team of sheriff's office detectives that have been working around the clock on this arrest and the capture of the two fugitives and captured within a week. th they've left no stone unturned. a woman at the home, carla fernandez was taken into custody and faces several felony charges as well including being an accessory. traffic is moving again on eastbound 580 in oakland. this is what it looked like after a man and woman was shot

near the fruitvale exit yesterday. the shooter is still on the loose this morning. it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon and investigators shut down eastbound traffic for hours. officers were on the roadway looking for any bit of evidence they could find. police say the victim's car was the only one hit by bullets. the victims are expected to be okay. police have not yet revealed a detailed description of the gunman. contra costa county health officials might be changing requirements for a thanksgiving dinner next year after two more people have become sick following the dinner in antioch. three others died. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at the contra costa county health services department in martinez. how are health officials responding? >> reporter: good morning, kris and sam. this brings the grand total of folks that got sick from this thanksgiving meal to 19. officials are saying if the

organize organizers, in this case the church, wants to do this event next year, they may have to go through what's called a health permit process. we know more than 800 people ate this meal in antioch on thanksgiving day that was prepared by the golden hills community church. as i mentioned, we have 19 people reportedly got sick from the meal, including the three deaths. while the county health officials continue their investigation into this and what may have caused it, they're saying the cause is more than likely some food-borne illness. >> regardless of what the source ends up being, our dinner or something else, the fact remains three precious people died, and no amount of effort is going to bring them back. >> reporter: when it comes to the permit process, the county would do a health en specs of the site beforehand which in this case would be the american legion hall, and also require no

food be served that was prepared in private homes. it goes without saying, if you attended this thanksgiving meal and you have leftovers, county officials say to throw away those leftovers immediately. live in martinez, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> it's probably time for everybody, now that we're a week away from thanksgiving. the three so-called drifters accused in two bay area homicides are scheduled to be back in court once again this morning. investigators say last year the trio killed a young woman backpacking in golden gate park and also a man walking his dog on a hiking trail near fairfax. during a pretrial hearing in september, two of those drifters accused the other one, shawn angold of being the gunman in both of those cases. today's hearing has to do with rearraignment and other preliminary motions. we're learning gruesome new details in the case of a northern california mother abducted for almost three weeks and released on thanksgiving day. >> "today in the bay's" gadi

schwartz has been following the story from redding and brings us new information which investigators just released. >> reporter: we're here in redding, california, with an update on the kidnapping of sherri papini. investigators now telling us new details, new description of her two kidnappers. you'll hear about that coming up on the "today" show. we'll also talk to an investigator who worked on this case early on on his theory of what may have happened, what may have motivated this kidnapping. we also understand investigators have been showing sherri papini surveillance video from an area where she was abducted to see if she could identify the dark suv that she was abducted in. so far she's been unable to identify that specific vehicle. all of that coming up in our live report. >> so many parts to this vision. you can watch the full report from gadi schwartz on the "today" show right after "today in the bay." it is the hottest ticket in

in willow glen it will be 52 degrees at 10:00, trending into the upper 50s, slightly cooler than the average high of 50. it will be warmer for the weekend and then the bottom drops out. i'll detail that coming up in less than five minutes. the tri-valley shows the build mostly for 680 through pleasanton and sunol. across the bridges you're doing just fine. holding steady right around 20 minutes from the bay bridge approach to the metering lights over to san francisco. 6:14. breaking overnight. two people are dead, four others are injured after a man with a gun walked up to a crowd of people standing outside a restaurant in baltimore and opened fire. this is new video from the scene. it happened last night as people were standing outside a carry-out restaurant. investigators think the gunman may have been retaliating after another shooting over the weekend. when it comes to finding ways to crack down on speeders, it seems the city of palo alto is still looking for solutions.

the city council this week shut down the idea of using police radar. that's because it would require the city to raise the speed limit on a number of streets. they're now considering other ideas. this will always get your at tennessee n-- a mountain lion reported yesterday in the area of woodside near the lafayette reservoir. police are boosting patrols in that area and asking people who live there to keep a close eye on their pets. this is not a pet, this next story. that's part of the warning here. i guess it's cute. neighbors in one san francisco community are being told to stop feeding this coyote. she's been dubbed theburnal hill coyote. she's running after cars,

chasing after food thrown from vehicles. she's losing her fear of humans and has been witnessed approaching people. humane society says human food is bad for coy ohities. chocolate without the guilt. nestle says it has made a break through, reducing the level of sugar this candy by up to 40%, using natural i believe ingredients. the company says it can change the structure of sugar so it can use less sugar in chocolate without affecting the taste. nestle says it will start using that process in 2018. we'll be the judge of that. >> can't wait to find out. what if you held a hearing and nobody showed up, not the subject of your hearing? >> this is kind of a head dch scratcher. that's what happened at the state capitol. it's wells fargo that was a know show. >> everybody knew the hearing

was coming. you guys reported it earlier this week before it happened. a state hearing in sacramento over the wells far go skapdal. the senate banking and financials institution committee held a hearing :30, room 3191. the l.a. times went and they said wells fargo did not go. a spokesperson for the san francisco-based bank tells the times the bank is limited in what questions it can answer and points out it did send a regional manager to an earlier hearing. facebook's cheryl sandburg is joining the elite group of millionaires and billionaires who have pledged to give away much of their fortune. she'll donate to lean-in that helps young women and option b, a charity that helps people after aa loss. the federal bank of new york

say a growing number of americans are falling behind on car loans. this is a canary in the coal mine. you may remember what happened the last time easy credit left americans overextended. today is the first day of trading in december. the dow coming off the best month since march. the dow just up two points wednesday. we have steve mnuchin, the new treasury secretary a ap /* appointee. he said he will not push through a tax cut through the ultra wealthy. apparently there is going to be a tax cut, but he'll take out a number of deductions as well. there will be no net gain for the very wealthy. the or concern is mr. trump's tax plan does seem to have a part of it for single parents in the middle class actually pay more in taxes. he says he's going to try to get

it will be all good. now, into next week, that's when we start to see those changes with cooler air dropping in and also some spotty showers. on thursday that will be our next best chance of rain. so until then it will be mostly dry. we'll see changes temperaturewise. this weekend once again very nice. this is a look at the forecast for saturday for the bay and inland areas. quickly warming by noon. highs in the mid 60s. also for sunday, more on the same, and clouds moving in late as we get ready for that cool air. also a chance of rain in san francisco on monday as well as tuesd tuesday. we could have freezing temperatures in the valleys. we'll be keeping an eye on that over the next several days. mike, getting a little busier out there. >> little is the key word. an easier flow of traffic as we've seen all week.

we're looking toward hayward and the bay bridge. i'll talk about that in a second. i want to show you 880 and 680, pleasanton from 238 in san leandro through union city. we have the typical pattern. easing into the morning commute. 92 and 84. the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge starting to see slowing across the flat sections. northbound 680 at capital expressway, a crash there. a smooth flow of traffic here as well. we'll talk about possibility for a delay for 61, 62 and 65 on vta through a construction area. and the bay bridge toll plaza, you do have the backup. the metering lights are on. >> that is backed up. up next, the plan to make san francisco city college free-for-all residents of the city is running into problems once again. more on that coming up. why you might want to skip a

there's evidence that white wine may increase the risk of bad news for our producer lindsay and other white wine lovers. evidence now that white wine could increase the risk of melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer. a new study from brown university followed more than 200,000 adults for 18 years and showed each drink per day of white wine increased the risk of

slowing around north livermore, that might be as crews arrived. a new issue northbound 680. reports of a fender bender there. a pleasant approach toward the bay bridge. in problems there. 23 minutes for 680 through the slowing. showed you 880 from 238 to the dumbarton bridge, only 23 minutes. back to you. another critical arrest to report that sounds a lot like the first one. now the second inmate who escaped from the santa clara county jail last week is arrested and behind bars after being found in an attic. nbc bay area was there last night as rogelio chavez was taken into custody near coit park in san jose. >> we have been covering this story non-stop since it broke thanksgiving morning. we were the first to bring you the news that there had been a jailbreak. "today in the bay's" bob redell is in the main jail to explain how investigators were able to track down that fugitive after a week on the run bob.

>> reporter: good morning. yesterday morning during 9:30 news conference the sheriff's office expressed confidence to us that they would be able to recapture rogelio chavez, and it was just a few hours later that they had a four-plex surrounded near coit park in san jose. that's where they did find the escaped inmate inside that home. it was a tip that led them to this home that was a friend of his. it turns out that he was inside at one point according to the sheriff's office, hiding inside the attic. when law enforcement entered the home last night, they did find him inside a room. they said he was compliant. at 8:25, they led him outside in handcuffs, ending what had been a seven-day search for him. >> thank the incredible team of sheriff's office detectives working around the clock on this arrest and the capture of the two fugitives, captured within a

week. that left no stone unturned and many, many sleepless nights. >> deputies did take chavez to a local hospital because they believe he was high on drugs. they also tell us he was in possession of crack cocaine and marijuana. the sheriff's office also took into custody carla fernandez who lived in the home near coit park. she faces charges of being an accessory, resisting arrest and obstructing the investigation. deputy also found a gun inside that four-plex. on tuesday night laron campbell was structured after a dip led them to his sister's home in antioch. he crashed through the ceiling and into the custody of law enforcement. his sister also under arrest for her alleged role in aiding and abetting. when campbell and chavez escaped a week ago last week from the second floor window of the main jail hire in downtown san jose, the sheriff's office believes

both men went their separate ways. this time when they're back for their stay in the jail, they will be placed in the maximum security section. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." new this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly head-on crash in the east bay. this happened about 8:30 last night on buchanan road at meadows avenue in pittsburg. that road was closed until early this morning while investigators were at the scene. police say a 50-year-old woman was killed after her car drifted into on coming traffic. the other driver is expected to be okay. mu details in a triple shooting investigation. police released these mug shots of the three men now under arrest. the shooting happened monday night at union landing during what police say was a prearranged drug deal. during the transaction something went south and three suspects opened fire killing one man and injuring two others. those suspects then took off,

but because of a witness description of the getaway car, police arrested the men a short time later. two of the most well-known high schools in the bay area have troubling charges swirling around them. a 15-year-old football play at de la salle high in concord is charged with sexually assaulting a girl from carondelet high. police say after the varsity team won a play-off game on november 18th, a member of the freshman team sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl. this happened on campus while the suspect and victim were attending the game. killed while on the job. a public works employee was shot in san francisco in broad daylight. we brought you this story during our midday newscast yesterday. the victim was gunned down in the area of 25th and very month streets just a couple blocks from san francisco general hospital. family members identify that victim as jermaine jackson.

we are told he is a father of two young children. police are still searching for the gunman. no word yet on a motive in this killing. we're also expected to lynn today when shows will resume for cirque du soleil performances after a worker died on the job. this is him, olivier rochette, the son of the founder. he was killed tuesday night after being hit by a work platform before the show. he was rushed to the hospital and that's where he died. the world famous show is in the parking lot of at&t park. >> all the checks and tests that they need to do with safety equipment and conditions in the workpla workplace, on a regular basis to make sure equipment is working properly. >> rochette's death is the third for cirque du soleil since 2009. wildfires has ravaged two

lot of trouble for allegedly writing racist graffiti on a san ramon valley unified district school bus. racist words have been found in bathrooms, you probably remember this, monta vista and california high schools. those investigations are still on going. the student accused of the school bus graffiti is going to face, quote, disciplinary and criminal action. but the district did not specify what those actions will be. a san francisco man is among three people who died after attending a southern california music festival this summer. now we're learning what caused those deaths. this is promotional video of hard summer music festival held in july in san bernardino county. the coroner said yesterday all three people who died accidentally overdosed on ecstasy. among them is 22-year-old derrek lee of san francisco. two concert goers overdosed at

journal" the website will now enforce amsterdam's represental rules on the airbnb remember site. amsterdam says landlords can't rent their property for more than 60 nights a year. up until now that wasn't enforced by airbnb. their attitude has been the city rules are important, but that's up to the city to enforce them. that 60-day rule by the way also true in san francisco. supervisors just passed that rule. the big question this morning, will airbnb enforce san francisco's rules in san francisco? we've asked and when we find out we will let you know. you remember donald trump tweeted yesterday he was going to hold a big announcement later this month in which he will, in his words, leave his great business in total in order to fully focus on running the country. that inspired a little-known government agency, the office of governmental ethics to tweet out as well. kind of a tweet storm really. this divestiture will do what

next week. we'll keep you up to date on that. mike, how is it looking around the bay? >> the build starts in the east bay, moves westward. we're seeing that pattern, seeing things kick in a little late. we'll talk about the south bay in a second. we're looking at 880 south from the 238 past the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge. here is the slower drive building there. same thing with 680 through pleasanton. no surprises. that orange there, that means there's low clouds and fog registering. notice the lights are moving quickly through the area. i think these clouds are just above the deck and not presenting a problem for our drivers. we'll track that as we get back to our maps. the rest of the commute towards the bay bridge, slowing through the upper east shore and berkeley. under 45 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge where the toll plaza metering lights remain on. the push pour the south bay over the last 15 minutes, seeing more

state. this played out over much of the night. the suspect ended up barricading himself inside a home with two kids inside for hours before police could reach him and they killed him. the hostages weren't hurt. investigators say the suspect shot at a tacoma officer several times. the officer later died at the hospital. buzz aldrin who in 1969 became one of the first men to walk on the moon, tweeted out this picture of his next adventure. now we know he's been rushed away from his trip to the south pole. the 86-year-old posted this picture to his twitter page two days ago announcing he was headed to antarctica. the tour company that al din was with said he had to be taken out. he's in stable condition. he has been flown out of the south pole. >> we hope he is well. commute chaos right now. did you see this scene yesterday on eastbound 580 in oakland where a man and woman were shot at near the fruitvale exit. it happened yesterday afternoon
