good morning, you're watching "today in the bay." waking up to a live look at the oakland estuary. that's the san francisco skyline, trying to peek through some haze. you're waking up to some cooler although slightly warmer temperatures. good morning, everyone. we have our microclimate forecast. temperatures are slightly warmer but still kind of cool. >> not by much, maybe two to three degrees if that.

so if you've been thinking it's been chilly, it kind of has. we're in the month of no so a fair game. we're expecting nice sunshine to peek through, current temperatures in san francisco looking at about 47 degrees's n the 60s. we're actually expecting to top out into the upper 50s. so if you are going to be out there, i want to say today is still going to be one of those days where you want to bring on fall jackets and sweaters. oakland a nice sunrise, 46 degrees and your overall highs today along the coast and peninsula are going to remain in the 50s, even out near the north bay. also expecting to see the lower 60s. so we did climb into the 60s yesterday which we topped out in the 50s so today should be a nice little change in the pattern. as far as rain, we're expecting a dry weekend ahead, but he are tlak tracking the possibility of a few showers into the workweek ahead. >> we'll check back with you in a few minutes. we're going to begin this morning with breaking news. an unknown number of people are

dead and several others are now in the hospital after a fire erupted at a dance party in the east bay. now, about 75 to 100 people were inside. fire officials tell us there are casualties but just how many they just aren't sure. at this hour, crews are searching for the missing. the fire started around 11:30 last night at the 1300 block of 31st avenue in oakland, just north of the 880 near the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. the party was advertised as a rave. according to property records the building is zoned as a warehou warehouse. the oakland fire department tells us crews are still working to get a full picture of what happened. >> the fire that burned for four hours. obviously, it did burn through the roof so it's very dangerous in there right now for our crews to go back in. but once we determine it's safe, we will go back into the building. >> now, an artist collective taking place at the building next door also burned down. we'll be sure to bring you more information as it comes in.

will two tweets derail america's relationship with china? that's the concern after president-elect trump broke with decades of foreign policy and spoke with the president of taiwan. then tweeted about it angering china. the tweet says the president of taiwan called me today to wish me congratulations on winning the presidency. thank you. taiwan and china have been at odds for decades. the u.s. and taiwan have had unofficial relations since 1979 when u.s. government recognized beijing as china's sole government. jim ross says the tweet was intentional and a ploy to drive the news cycle. >> the president of taiwan doesn't just call the president-elect of the united states. that's not how diplomacy works. that's not how the world works. >> when questions poured in about trump's tweet, he tweeted back saying, interesting how the u.s. sells taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but i should not accept a congratulatory call. taiwan's president wasn't the

only asian leader trump spoke to this week. he talked to the philippine president who welcomed trump's election. he was a victim of a targeted attack. los angeles police say the usc professor who was stabbed to death on campus yesterday knew his attacker. boss co-juan was a psychology professor and joined the faculty in 2001. a student in his 20s was taken into custody. students and faculty are rattled. >> my thoughts are with his family and you just don't -- i mean, the everyday interactions you have with your students are not -- are very positive and affirming. you just -- your mind generally doesn't go there. so it's just a shock to hear something like that's happened. >> grief counseling will be vaiblg next week for students or staff who need it. gone in less than 30 seconds. smash-and-grab teens are working in groups and cleaning out apple stores with holiday shoppers still inside. it's organized crime in action with apple as its target. now, this is surveillance video of a san francisco apple store.

you can see crooks running in, yelling and grabbing iphones, ip ipods, ipads. the scene is playing out at other stores in berkeley and burlingame. so far, there have been almost ten robberies recently. los gatos customers say this isn't the first time apple has been a target. >> what happened at this location? >> one guy snatched a phone and just ran away with it. >> it won't stop you from holiday shopping? you're not going to shop online nout? >> no. i want to be outside because i want my kids to see everything. i want my kids to see the lights. >> many apple stores now have private security guards at most bay area locations. community members came together last night to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attack in san bernardino. the gathering included music as well as numerous tributes from a list of speakers that including the san bernardino mayor and police chief. it was one year ago when a married couple opened fire at a county holiday party, killing 14 people and wounding 21 others.

well, the two men who cut their way out of a san jose jail last wednesday were back in jail jumpsuits before a judge, both inmates and a woman accused of harboring one of them made their first court appearance since being recaptured this week. before he escaped, laron campbell had several felony cases pending including kidnapping armed robbery and carjacking. both he and chavez face 30 to 40 years in prison. prosecutors say a conviction for jail escape potentially adds an extra 16 months to their prison time. chavez will face an added charge for possessing a firearm. the one-year anniversary of mario woods death had community members again demanding charges be brought against the sfpd officers who killed him. the shooting caught on tape drew outrage in the community. yesterday family and friends marked the day with a series of memorials and a small protest at the hall of justice. >> my dad was just saying, you

abduction of a shasta county mother found three weeks after she disappeared. and we're hearing it from her husband. "today in the bay's" ian call has details. >> the officers kind of braced me and kind of put his arm around me and he says, you know, prepare yourself. she's alive. you've just go the to be happy. they branded her. >> keith papini tells "20/20" says he remembers rushing to meet his wife sherri at the hospital after she was found beaten and shackled more than 100 miles from their home. >> i just ran past everybody ayinde throw open the curtain and she was there. and her poor face. i just hugged her. i just held her. >> sherri papini was miss forge three weeks. keith said the search felt endless. at one point she feared she was dead. >> we were heading back after we

(adlib) good morning, everyone. that sunrise is trying to make its way over the golden gate bridge. welcome back. well, commuters got quite a surprise on friday. mysterious and profane posters plastered on b.a.r.t. trains. they appeared throughout the transit system sometimes during the morning commute. the notices are signed with the hashing tag b.a.r.t. behavior 101. and seemed to call attention to a perceived rise in racism and aggressive behavior after the

presidential election. well, transit officials say the posters can't stay and are removing them as soon as possible. bay area crabbers are about to get a new place to fish. a 50-mile stretch of california coast has been cleared for commercial crabbing starting today. california department of fish and wildlife says the area between point ray as and salt point is now safe to catch crabs. the area has been off limits after high levels of acid was found in the crab area last year. now, fishing grounds north of salt point through the north jetty of humboldt bay will remain closed. those high acid levels almost wiped out last year's crab season. caltrain is taking the holiday spirit for a joyride. it has a train all decked out and ready to roll. the festive caltrain holiday train was unveiled yesterday at the king street station in san francisco complete with snow, of course. it will be rolling down the peninsula this weekend, stopping at several stations.

1883 sold for $4 million, more than double what its previous owner paid ten years ago. in lower pacific heights that's a fixerupper. >> we have to seismically retrofit the house, redo the foundation and electrical and mechanical, plumbing all of that stuff. that will take a while. >> i've never heard of a creator buying the house of an original series. but i think it just shows how attached jeff is to this show. this is like his baby. >> one, two, three, go. >> reporter: the restoration will include five freshry imprinted and signed blocks of concrete. franklin is also laying the foundation for his program's revival on netflix as "fuller house". >> we want to come back here. we want to shoot new stock footage for the show. we might bring the cast back up here some day and do a little scene with them leaving the house. i don't know exactly yet. >> reporter: frankly says he'll likely rent the house after renovation. finding 10ants wouldn't be hard even without the actors and the fans, the house itself with three fireplaces, three bedrooms

along the coast we're talking 50s, 59 half moon bay, san francisco also in the 50s, and out near the north bay we're going to remain into those 60s all the way down into south bay. we're talking los gatos, san jose lower 60s. and we're going to stick that way at least through the weekend ahead. now, we are expecting a dry weekend and when i say warming temps, i by no means mean 70s or 80s. we have that front that will keep us nice and dry. that low pressure system is also expected to make its exit making way for high pressure that should be dominating in the forecast. now, i want to show you a quick look ahead at what you can expect for the upcoming workweek. we're still pretty far out so nothing is set in stone. but look at this rain. wre tracking the possibility of seeing some rain as early as thursday morning, friday morning as well, through the friday even. so if you did have plans thursday and friday, you may want to check back into our nbc bay area weather app so you can check to make sure there's no rain heading your way. we are tracking also the possibility of a few other showers, buts, overall, saturday

and sunday looking pretty good. here is a look at your day planner, exactly what you can look forward to. that is clear skies, not a lot of changes in the forecast. we are experiencing overnight chilly temps. if you've been waking up with a brr feeling, that's because we've seen overnight temps in the 40s and 30s. yesterday higher elevation areas definitely saw some gusty winds, mt. diablo, 50, 60 miles per hour plus. but here's what you can expect for the caltrain holiday train if you're headed out with family and friends, we're statalking 6 degrees, it starts at 4 clng. also tiburon holiday festival also. not a lot of cloud cover. it will be mild, plenty of sunshine. it will be a good day to hang out outdoors. just in time for all of these holiday festivities. we've also got the los gatos

christmas parade, 56 by 11:00 a.m., all in all clear with sunshine just in time for santa to start making his way through the bay area. i know i caught up with him at st. francis high school yesterday and he's already doing some christmas shopping with the help of his elves. over the next seven days with are expecting to see a few changes but not a lot and nothing that will impact the start of your workweek. we'll top out at 59 degrees overall today, 58 degrees heading into sunday. those chillier temperatures really start to kick in on sunday night, heading into early monday morning. so if you wake up early for work, you're definitely going to feel it. 56 degrees heading into tuesday those temperatures remain the same. and as we head into thursday and friday, that's when the models are showing the possibility of another storm system that could bring back those rain chances, all across the bay area, starting with the north bay first. so they're going to have a better chance of seeing that rain on early thursday morning. now, inland, tracking 60s for today but then look at the rest of the week. we're starting to see those 50s so it's definitely feeling like

freedoms. but after serving three tours of duty in two different wars, the aspiring police officer now believes his own rights were violated at santa rosa junior college over something he said to a friend in class. >> go trump. >> reporter: he said those two words got a sharp reaction from his yoga teacher who had been taking role. >> she told me not to make political comments again in class. and i said, yes, ma'am, it won't happen again. my apologies. >> reporter: but it didn't end there. mesa says after class the teacher took him aside. >> she told me i wasn't allowed to talk about a man who is raci racist, ma joj nis tick and prejudice against others. >> reporter: mesa says he was floored and days later he told the teacher he thought it was unprofessional. the next thing he knew, he says he was being escorted out of class by campus police officers. and being summoned to a student conduct hearing. according to the notice to appear, the instructor accused him of disrupting class by

shouting out a political comment and then confronted her in an aggressive manner. the dean sent mesa a letter noting that his plans to pursue a career in law enforcement could be impacted if he didn't agree to drop the class and either withdraw or accept an "f." >> so, to me, that's a threatening ultimatum. >> reporter: mesa denies doing anything wrong but says he felt like he had to agree to the terms of the deal because he's set to start at a police academy. the college would not comment citing privacy issues. >> i think this is discrimination at its finest. >> reporter: mesa says he's filed a grievance and just as he did in the military will continue to fight for freedoms. in santa rosa, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> after the election, fears of racism and mass deportations have increased. yesterday san jose city leaders tried to calm those worries. the chief of police made it clear that officers do not and will not ask victims or

witnesses about their immigration status. and leaders answered questions about the rights of both document and undocumented immigrants. the event was held at the mexican consulate in san jose, but it isn't just mexican immigrants who are worried. >> some people in the muslim and iranian community have come to meet with me, and they asked me about the city creating a list for deportation. >> it doesn't exist. >> it does not exist and it will not exist. >> city leaders hope immigrants get the message that san jose is not in the business of enforcing immigration laws. many other people in the bay area are still feeling the bern post-election. senator bernie sanders spoke to a sold-out crowd yesterday afternoon at uc berkeley promoting his new book. students and everyone concerned with the outcome of the election urging them to stay involved. >> despair is not an option. it is not an option. not just for you but for your

children and your grandchildren and for the future of this planet. >> after the berkeley event, sanders made an appearance in san rafael as well. his book is called "our revolution" and focuses on his historic primary fight. friends and family of a victim of a deadly hate crime are preparing to say good-bye. memorials will take place tomorrow for 28-year-old william simms who police say was gunned down outside a bar three weeks ago. police believe he was killed similarably because he was black. today a public gathering will begin at 1:00 outside the bar. at the same time, the family will hold a private service in an east bay church. simms was a promising young musician. last night his family was holding out that two suspects will be caught soon. >> i hope they're caught and they're convicted and they're brought to justice. and we get some closure to the situation and, you know, our community know that's we stand for -- we stand against this

type of thing in our community. this is the bay area. we try to live together. >> simms' former piano teacher at oakland school of the arts says the young musician was dedicated to his music. he calls the killing absolutely senseless. san jose police are ready to pay for your unwanted guns. the police department is hosting a gun buyback at its training substation on great oaks parkway today. you get a $100 target gift card for turning in a handgun, a $200 gift card if you give up an assault rifle. the buyback runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. >> well, there's a new tool to help victims help keep track of the bad guys. starting monday, it will be ease yir to get updates on criminals in the california prison system. victims will be able to register to get e-mails on the whereabouts of the people who victimized them. they'll be notified 90 days before an inmate is released and will be told if an inmate has moved or dies in prison. the new system replaces an older

here in the csn studios, it's been known that steve kerr has dealt with back pain for the past few years. he underwent two back surgeries and missesed a good portion of last season. he spoke wi we spoke with the warriors head coach for about 20 minutes and get this kerr admitted he used marijuana to try to alleviate the pain. a topic that kerr says could possibly put him in hot water with the nba. >> i'm not a pot person. it doesn't agree with me. i've tried it a few times and it did not agree with me at all. so i'm not the expert on this stuff. but i do know this. if you're an nfl player in particular and you've got a lot of pain, i don't think there's any question that pot is better for your body than vicodin, and yet athletes everywhere are prescribed vicodin like it's vitamin c, like it's no big deal. and there's like this perception

good morning, bay area. very peaceful and cool, yet chilly start to your saturday morning. here is a live look right now over san francisco. current temperatures right now remain in the 40s so those overnight chilly temps did manage to drop into the 30s in the north bay are still pretty cold out there. if you have an early morning commute you're not looking at any slick roads because we've got a dry weekend ahead. here is a live look over oakland also in the 40s right now, 46 degrees. should make way for a lot of sunshine in your forecast. today's highs will remain in the range of the 50s and the 60s. along the coast, we should be topping out at about 59 degrees in half moon bay, san francisco also in the upper 50s, and as we head down to the south bay, los gatos, san jose in the lower 60s for your weekend ahead. now, we are seeing a cold front that did move in, but it's a very dry cold front which means not enough to produce any

rainfall as that high pressure continues to dominate. that's what's going to make way for a very nice, dry weather pattern. futurecast right now looking way ahead, the models aren't showing a lot of activity over the next couple days so this nice sunshine should remain in the forecast through the start of your workweek ahead. now, by thursday, though, we're seeing out in the far north bay the possibility of a few showers. looking way ahead into friday, the models are still conflicting a bit. it's showing the possibility of some rain that could track down to napa and of course san francisco with the possibility of it moving to the south bay by the midafternoon. but all in all we're not tracking any rainfall for your weekend, which means, yes, it's gg to be a nice day to enjoy the outdoors. 49 degrees by about 9:00 a.m., by about 3:00 and 7:00 if you're heading out to a late dinner, it's going to be also ranging in the upper 50s, lower 60s. it's still going to feel like december. now, i do want to say there is currently a beach hazard that is going to remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. this evening because they are seeing some pretty

and 25 more are still unaccounted for this morning after a fire erupted at a dance party last night in the east bay. oakland's fire chief says this the worst fire in the city since the oakland hills blaze 25 years ago. now, about 75 to 100 people were inside that dance party. several of those people are now in the hospital. at this hour, crews are still searching for the missing. the fire started around 11:30 last night at the 1300 block of 31st avenue in oakland. that's just north of the 880 near the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. now, party was advertised as as rave. according to property records, the building is zoned as a warehouse. the oakland fire department tells us crews are still working to get a full picture of what happened. >> right now there's limited access to the structure, but it's too unsafe and not only that, there's a lot of heavy wood from when the roof came in
