oakland tonight... as we by the time i got out, i was dizzy. >> emotions continue to run high in oakland as we learn more about the victims and harrowing tales of survival after the devastating fire left more than 30 people dead. taking you to a live look at the scene here at the fire. this is almost 48 hours later after the fire. work continues around the clock to recover and identify victims inside. the news starts right now. good evening to you. i'm peggy bunker. >> i'm jessica aguirre.

thanks for joining us. another difficult day in oakland as the death toll rises dramatically from the ware house fire. >> raj mathai has been anchoring the coverage. joining us now. what's the latest, raj? >> reporter: there is a lot happening at this hour. the recovery continues. those bodies, perhaps more bodies to be discovered but we noticed in the last 24 hours, the mood shifted dramatically from this neighborhood, the people. yesterday it was all about the sadness and shock. tonight, there is still sadness and shock but a lot of anger. people starting to question why this warehouse had these people, why there was party here and why are these artist allowed to live here after all the complaints in this warehouse but ultimately, aside from the politics and aside from the investigation, so many lives have been lost. let's give you some of the latest numbers now we're working with at this hour, a little after 9:00 on sunday night and here is where it is. the latest death toll has risen to 33 victims.

eight of those people have been identified. now here is an interesting note, as well, 40% of this warehouse has been searched. that means there is a lot of work to be done into tonight and into the wee hours of this night, as well. the oakland mayor did confirm that criminal investigators are on site. it is very difficult, a pain staking process to go through the debbie. each piece, piece by piece and emotional for the fire crews. with that let's bring in alease who joins us here with me on 31st avenue. elyce? >> reporter: raj, as you said, it's been very emotional for first responders working around the clock for two days now and as you mentioned, criminal investigators are now here trying to determine how this warehouse turned into essentially a death trap and as the number grows in terms of the death toll, there is also a makeshift memorial that's grown here tonight at this how you can

see people coming out here lighting candles, bringing flowers, remembering those who lost their life here. 48 hours of painstakingly sifting through rubble. >> we're up to 33 and we're not done yet, and so it is likely that we will find more victim v >> reporter: ray kelly says crews have been working around the clock. >> we had to deliver a lot of bad news to people. >> reporter: 33 bodies have been recovered so far, all of them inside this ghost ship warehouse in oakland. one of the victims is a teenage son of a sheriff's deputy. >> as we talked about earlier at the press conference, we had to disclose that one of our officers, a person i work with lost his son here and that's very difficult. >> reporter: family and friends who lost loved ones began gathering nearby tonight in a quiet tribute. others never met those killed during an electronic music party made upmostly of artist. the tragedy is something bigger.

>> it could have been any of us. it could have been my brother. it could have been me. >> i think it really hit this community because there is a lot of warehouses. i live in a warehouse. >> that leads to things not being fire coded and stuff like this happening. >> reporter: after truckloads of rumble have been hauled away, crews have only been able to access 40% of the building and more axonxious families will ge the call. >> knowing you're going to get the call and waiting for your name, it's taking a toll. >> reporter: first responders are dealing with a lot themselves. they say there will be crisis counselors here in the coming days to talk with first responders to process everything they have gone through here but raj, tonight, crews will be here for many days coming up. their job is far from over. >> okay.

elyce here with us, thank you. it's a difficult emotion. a difficult time like we saw in 1991 for the oakland hills fire. now this is the deadliest fire in the history of the city of oakland and like we did in 1991, we're getting to know the victims here, the colorful stories of the souls lost. marianne favro joins us at a local coffee shop where one of these victims used to work. marianne? >> reporter: raj, we learned tonight that one of the victims was 32-year-old donna kellogg. she worked here at high wire coffee rosters in berkeley and she was also pursuing her dream of becoming a chef. inside high wire coffee roasters you'll find a small sign written in chalk telling customers they are hoping to find employee donna kellogg. tonight they learned she was killed in the so-called ghost ship warehouse fire in between shifts, the 32-year-old was going to culinary school.

her friend describes her as a free willing, free spirited candid person. brandon chase whiten hower also died in the fire. the electronic music artist was the vocalest for the band sybiotics fungi and an oakland based electronic band ghost of lightning and often went by the stage name travis blitzen and 22-year-old cash of the bay area dream pop brand them or us, too. 24-year-old nick gomez hall, an administrative assistant at counter point press, hall called himself a decomposer of music. 35-year-old uc berkeley graduate david kline. and 30-year-old sarah hoda of walnut creek. she was a teacher, gardener and

a hard-working person who loved children. talented sisters, daughters, brothers and sons, all lost in a fiery tragedy. we have also learned tonight that a 17-year-old boy was killed in the fire. the coroner's office has not released his name because he say minor but he's the son of an alameda county sheriff's deputy. reporting live, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. all these young men and women out for a night of music on friday night and never made it home. these stories are so sad for us to digest. as we move through the night here on this sunday night, there is a steady stream behind me of work trucks, heavy machinery trucks coming in and out of here every ten minutes taking away the debris from that warehouse. hopefully so they can find more bodies and identify those bodies. >> we'll check back with you in

a few minutes. back to you peggy and jessica. >> thank you. the list of names that we're finding out about will continue to grow so many people who just weren't able to make it out of that building or beat the flames. >> a horrifying thought if you think about it. there are a few lucky ones that made it out alive and have harrowing stories to tell. >> at that point, the power went out and i then just -- i jumped off of the loft, which is i don't know, ten or 11 feet, something, i don't even know. grabbed a head lamp, used it to find my cat, grabbed my cat, grabbed our phones, grabbed my keys, i'm not sure why and then just tried to get out of my gate and out the door and people at that point were just trying to push their way through. >> this is our home and one of the other residents was standing in the doorway with all of this smoke pouring out with his phone out trying to light the way for people still trapped inside. >> and trying to pull people if people got there -- >> he was trying to get people

out of there and at some point, i think whether you either got out or you didn't and i think that, that timeline was under ten minutes of when the fire started to when there was no chance for you getting out. that had to have been under ten minutes. >> it's hard to imagine the fear and the horror of what those poor people managed to go through. >> what we're hearing with the block smo black smoke, so difficult for people to see. >> coming up still ahead at 9:00. >> coming up, a man whose worked in the underground party scene weighs in on how prolific he thinks these warehouses are. i'm christie smith and i'll have the story coming up. >> i think this is a priority in terms of making sure what is it that we need to enforce our code from fire code, building codes. >> we take a walking tour with an oakland city councilman who says the city dropped the ball

there is really not much hope, you know, left, but, you know, every time that phone rings, i get this feeling she's calling. it's a mistake. >> reporter: that is the sister-in-law of one of the victims here. again, 33 victims so far but the crews continue to take away the debris here from this warehouse in search for any more bodies that are inside. these bodies badly decomposed. the coroner is out here, as well as investigators both local and federal investigators. one of the issues here in this warehouse that so many neighbors and city officials have
