>> where do you buy your meat? is there someone in the deli to slice it? >> i want to start with break news in los angeles. anonymous tip with an eminent terror attack that has ramping up security. pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. cities don't normally respond like this to telephone threats. senior law enforcement official says it was a call from a pay phone in a western country, but because it came with little time to check it out they decided to go public this morning riders on the los angeles commuter rail system are asking to be vig lint. the threat came from an anonymous phone call over seas to a public safety line there. the caller indicated that something would happen today at the station across the street

from universal studios which is owned by nbc parent company. authorities called the threat very specific. >> because of the specificity and the emminence of the threat we thought we should make this public. >> reporter: declined to say which country the tip came from but it was in english. >> we are now look at the credibility of the threat. we're continuing to work this investigation. we're coordinating that along with our local partners here in los angeles, with our international partners who provided the initial information. >> reporter: officials in los angeles are urging residents to use caution but urged the public to go about their normal day. >> there will always be a lingering feeling of fear, but i've got to go to work. >> this could be real. it could be a hoax. we're remaining calm. asking the public to take precautions they would take on any other day. >> reporter: riders will see more uniformed police, sheriffs

deputies and dog teams on the l.a. metro. undercover officers will also be on the job. the fbi is working more to learn more about the source of the information. >> pete, thank you very much. >> also this morning there are new dremevelopments in the dead warehouse fire in oakland. we'll talk to the man who ran that warehouse in a moment. first nbc is at the scene. >> reporter: good morning. with most of the building cleared the death toll has risen to 36. 35 of those bodies have now been identified. this is all part of a criminal investigation. investigators are looking for answers. >> reporter: overnight hundreds paying their respects. unlit candles and flashlights. so many lives lost. many of the victims young. in their 20s and 30s.

their bodies recovered from this warehouse where a devastating fire quickly spread during a late night party. derek almina leased the warehouse. >> everyone knew at this point. everyone knew that we lived there. >> he says he and his family as well as dozens of others have lived there for the past three years. >> the lease is basically renting it to be a school, dance, culture, visuals and build to suit, that i build to suit. as is to city standard. >> but the city says this warehouse, which fire officials say was jammed with flammable materials, was never up to standard or zoned for residential living. documents obtained by nbc news show a history of complaints for garbage piling up and illegal interior building structure. the owner of the warehouse has not responded to request for comment, but her daughter tells

the l.a. times the building was leased as a studio space, not a dwelling. he says over the years he was forced to make improvements, installing an electrical panel and a hot water heater. he's spoken to investigators but not been charged with any crime. >> you say the building wasn't up to code but did you make modifications to the building that maybe shouldn't have been done? >> this is where -- >> he can't talk about that. he can't say that kind of stuff right now. >> his partner wanted to stop our interview, but he wanted to go on. >> did we modify? that's the question. did we make changes? like, i would like to say we made improvements. >> allison says the family did the best they could. >> we didn't have enough money to do the things that needed to be done there, and there was nobody helping us in the ways

i can barely stand here right now. >> but it's a fair question. obviously there were some conditions in that building that may have led to a dangerous situation and led to what happened there. >> i laid my body down there every night. we laid our bodies down there. we put our children to bed there every night. we made music. we created art. we opened our home, what became our home. it started off as an initial dream that we would have a facility and venue that would host everything from the guy community to artists that couldn't perform anywhere to performance art and eventually when you can't pay your rent because your dream is bigger than your pocketbook, when the need for housing, when the need for people to be able to sit down and be warm and make food

and take a shower and take a bath and go to bed. this wasn't about me three years ago. i signed a lease and i got a building that was to city standards supposedly. i was lured into something that i had to constantly -- >> mr. almena, it camay have be a true, but kooraccording to th city it wasn't under code. we have someone that lived there and she rented space. she said you knew it was dangerous and profited and never spent a time on anything but partying. >> i don't want to talk about it. i don't want to talk about me. i don't want to talking about profiting. this is profit? the loss of life? >> what did you do to insure the safety -- >> i laid my three children down there every night. >> we understand that.

what we've asking him was a series of questions that investigators are going to be asking over the coming days either of mr. almena or of other people about the conditions inside that building that may have led to a dangerous circumstance. >> some of those allegations come from people who lived in that building. we spoke with women yesterday who said they slept with a distinguisher. he leases the building. someone else owns it. when asked about modifications that he made and safety precautions, he's been unable to answer them at this point. >> we understand with a lack of resources a resources and money sometimes it's not possible to do things the way you want. there are building codes and inspections and permit for a reason. that is what the investigation is going to focus on in the coming days. >> we hope he'll provide those answers because there are families, 36 of them, and men more who want them. to transition to the forecast. you've been standing here patiently. >> obviously questions that need to be answered.

police in los angeles are stepping up security at subway stations across the city this morning. after an anonymous phone call to a public safety line. the caller claimed the terror attack was planned for today. officials say they aren't taking any chances as they work to determine the credibility of that call. president-elect trump heads to the next stop of his post-election thank you tour. tonight he'll hold a rally in fayettevil fayetteville, north carolina where he will announce that james "mad dog" mattis is his choice for secretary of defense. similars plans are in iowa and grand rapids, michigan. how much sleep did you get last night? new research from aaa suggest if you miss just one hour of sleep, your concentration and reaction time can suffer with terrible consequences. tom is in maryland with that story.

tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we've all done it, zoned out as we're driving down the road. we miss our exit, but this new research suggests that if we're operating on just four to five hours of sleep, that could have the same effect as if we're driving under the influence. watch these teens drifting off. some catching themselves the moment before impact. others, not. it's not just teenage drivers. a sleep deprived nation too often asleep at the wheel. this morning aaa warns too many of us aren't getting enough zs. even seven hours isn't enough, elevating the risk of a crash. the cdc says more than a third of us don't get that much rest. sleep five to six hours a night. aaa says you're almost twice as likely to crash. >> getting only four to five hours of sleep in a night is the same as driving while legally drunk. if you sleep less than four hours in a given 24 hour period,

you are as impaired as if you're twice the legal limit of alcohol. >> reporter: it's happened to carry cwarren. >> i did that a lot. >> reporter: it was her son, 18-year-old tyler who veerd off this interstate flipping his car four times. witnesses said he never hit the brakes. so tired at 2:50 in the afternoon, he didn't realize he was in the wrong state. he was hoping to walk onto his college football team. >> it's hard because his friends are all starting to buy houses and get married. he's 18. it's like he's always going to be 18. >> reporter: tyler's parents on a crusade warning others of the sleeping danger. one hour less than your normal rest can raise the risk. >> we've all said it, i'll sleep when i'm did. unfortunely, it results the other way.

during the entire meal. >> i smell brownies. >> this is a very easy little hack. you make your brownies, line the pan, and then you use a business ket or cookie cutter press that in it comes out. out. and then i made a -- you can't use regular whipped cream because it'll follow apart. this is just an italian cream cheese, and then just do a dollop. do you want to do one? >> you're doing great. i cut the brownies out. >> pipe a little thing on. if you have a plastic bag, that'll work too if you take the tip and add a whole strawberry to the top, rest it on there and cap it off with a little santa hat. >> that's nice. >> super easy and great -- >> strawberry and chocolate. >> so this is just a fun way to zip up a solo cup. basically red solo cups or plastic cubs, rub bonn and the buckles that you can find at stationary stores.

and they're usually used for wedding invitations and use like a little bit of tape and just like double stick tape and tape it on there and make a santa belt. now i'm going advice you, do not use a hot glue gun, it will melt the plast pick. >> good idea. got some wine glasses that you've made fancy for the holidays. >> well, it's more you know how you forget what drink is yours. you pick -- these are window clings, and they just cling to glasses. take one and cling it on and take it off, and it's great for kids too if you want to put those on and pick whichever, i think you're probably a burgundy drinker or red wine. >> red wine at this time of year. >> you stick that on and remember what your glass is. cool, very nice. >> finally we're going to make this very beautiful -- i mean this is a super festive thing to do. you basically take a bucket, like -- >> nice bucket. >> you can use two liter plastic, you know, like a soda bot physical you cut the top off. you fill it up with -- can you pour a little water in there, like about an inch or so of
