days. more of the showers starting to move in. so still some cloudy skies, and we're going to be firing up the storm ranger as we go into the morning. but tracking the fog and the mist and drizzle that we have to start out there. this is tv's only doppler radar truck and it will be with us as we go through the morning. so we'll be able to check in on that coming up. let's get a look at what's happening out there now, as we see the moisture streaming in. we'll be tracking this next storm system that will bring in heavier rain tonight. that's coming up. as we head over to mike, let's see what's happening on the roadways. >> kari, things are much calmer than yesterday. the rain is not an issue. slicker roads may be an issue. there's mist and drizzle out there. even though that's out there, no problems on the roadway reported. anywhere south of the san mateo bridge, for example, a little more traffic through san francisco. we'll talk about that in a second. a crash reported in the sausalito area, southbound

highway 101. i said southbound, but you see the slowing northbound. chp will arrive and sort out the details. meanwhile, back in san francisco, all the roads into and out of the city moving well. you may have trouble right around with mosconi center. we'll check in with rick boon due to breaking news. >> we have a water main break that happened a little over an hour ago at this location at 4th and howard. had a worker who tripped in the water, he's going to be okay. that's the issue right there. you see that happening. the result of that, this is what's being affected this morning. mission to fulsome on 4th street shut down. that's until about noon. howard from 3rd to 4th shut down until about noon, all because of all this water. right now they're trying to figure out exactly what the cause is. the cause is probably something

we already know, just old pipes. they burst after a period of time. that's exactly the result. now crews are trying to clean this up. we have emergency crews here from the fire department and also crews from the water company here as well. they're trying to clean this mess up. i guess trying to cut this off. there's a lot of water bubbling out of the manhole. obviously this thing is pretty active right now. i'm trying to find out from the residents, there's an apartment building here and businesses all over this place. i'm assuming, going on a guess here because of a water main break, these people don't have water. this busy guess is going to open in about maybe an hour or so, and i don't even know if they can open up for operation today. a lot of answers i need to get for you. right now this is just a dirty yucky mess. look at some of this mud that's come up because of this. the water is still flowing. it's flowing in between cars and

going all the way down the street. here is the big fear. beyond all of this this morning, and the subway line being affected. police tell us as we drive to this location, watch out, be cautious. because this concrete is so moyes moist right now, there's a concern for a sinkhole. another layer of concern that's coming from what's happening right here. let me get a few more details and see if i can find out how this thing actually did happen. i'll hit you back as soon as i get more details. in the meantime, we're live at the sinkhole in the moscone center, rick boone for "today in the bay." tonight marks a week since the deadly warehouse fire in oakland. now all 36 victims have been identified, and as the grieving deepens, the investigation into how the fire started is just beginning. investigators have called in a special forensic mapping team to help out. they're expected to arrive later today. in the meantime friends and

family of the victims continue to come to the site to pay their respects. >> he was just wonderful. he was fun to be with. he was a very positive person. >> he was a one-of-a-kind talent. i pray and i hope that we can look at safety for our other artists. >> last night the oakland city council approved declaring a state of emergency in connection with the fire. the declaration allows victims' families, nearby businesses and the city to file for state funds to help in recovery efforts. >> many tears shed in recent days on the cal campus as grieving families and friends came together. five of the 36 people killed in the fire had ties to uc berkeley. you see folks coming in and writing messages and posting their memories on poster boards. inside about 50 people gathered to pay their respects including the twin city of van ness that plotkin, one of the victims.

something, instead of a negative thing, they want to see a positive thing. this is a positive team, the team winning and playing. >> it's been really nice to see the bay area sports teams, all three of them in oakland have been showing real heart here. this is the billboard that you now see going past the coliseum on 880 and literally showing some heart and underneath a tribute to the ghost ship warehouse victims. as for the winning the fans were talking about during the game, that didn't necessarily pan out the way some folks thought. tyrese hill taking the kickoff and he is gone. kansas city chiefs and the strength of their special teams with big plays last night go on to beat the raiders. 21-3 at half-time. the raiders mounted a comeback. derek carr missed connecting with amari cooper that could have tied the game. as for the rest of it, the raiders mounted one final valley and came up short in the fourth quarter.

you see the incompletion, they lose 21-13. the raiders fall from the first seed to the fifth in the play-off picture. a san jose english teacher behind bars accused of having a sexual relationship with a male student. police say 32-year-old trudy hill used her position to exploit a 17-year-old student at santa theresa high school. the relationship took place between august and november of this year. the superintendent sent out a letter to parents saying the district is shocked and disturbed by the allegations. residents in one south bay neighborhood are reportedly asking to make permanent a temporary fence designed to keep out crime. that fence is located along rose crest terrace. it went up after a string of crimes during the summer where criminals passed through an easement there. city leaders approved lifting the easement temporarily which allowed the fence in the short term. council members will vote next

month on whether or not to let the fence stay. a new set of off-leash rules for the golden gate recreational area. a final impact statement for on and off-leash areas along many peaches and trails. off-leash areas will be restrishlgted to six areas, four of which in san francisco including crissy field and fort clemson. 90% of the old off-leash areas will be eliminated. good friday morning. the time is 5:08. a lot of clouds moving in. we're actually in between weather systems right now. we still have light rain as we see the clouds rolling right over the bay area. we will have a chance of rain throughout the day. only spotty light rain mostly over the east bay toward brentwood. temperatureswise it's nice and mild, much warmer than we've seen even for the high temperatures as the warm air continues to surge in ahead of

he was also a senator here for 24 years. he ran for president once unsuccessfully, but certainly someone who captured the imagination of the united states through his work with nasa, but also the hearts of many people as he worked here on capitol hill. president obama called him an icon, a great pioneer, a hero. we heard from president-elect trump who said he was a legend from the clintons who said he was one of the finest people they had ever known, and several others weighing in. interesting thing about him. he was a fighter pilot in world war ii in korea. that's where he met buzz aldrin. he set a world record for the fastest flight from los angeles to new york, in 3 1/2 hours. it was almost like there was nothing he couldn't do in the air. >> no kidding, like superman. >> he sped through life. talk about a lot of different job descriptions over the course

wall street's post election rally could continue. dow, nasdaq and s&p 500 all up. the dow has now posted record closes 13 times since the election. you want to look for day on consumer sentiment. the dow rising 65 points to 19,614. nasdaq up 23 to 5,417. a new study finds barely half of 30-year-olds in america are earning more than their parents at a similar age. researchers at stanford, harvard and university of california say that's an enormous decline from the 1970s when nearly all the incomes of children outpaced their parents. the group said even rapid growth in the economy will do little to reverse the trend as wages are stagnating in the middle class. facebook appears to be copying snap chat once again, adding a new feature called the camera platform. it's kind of similar to the

skies. the chance to get out there and get some shopping done, maybe put up christmas decorations before we have heavier rain moving in. overall, don't be surprised if you do have light rain. we're still seeing this on the hour-by-hour outlook. the chance of rain stays with us throughout the day and into tonight. then as we go into tonight, we start to see some rain moving in from the north, and it becomes more widespread. we see yellows and bright pinks here showing the rain may be heavy, waking you up early in the morning as it pours from the roof and moves from north to south before we get clearing during the afternoon. we have the potential to get another inch of rain in parts of the north bay, about .75 inch for the east bay, a much lesser amount for the south bay. temperaturewise in san francisco, expect it to stay in the upper 50s, low 60s today. light rain moving in tonight. heavier rain early tomorrow. next week we still have the showers in the forecast and the same for the inland areas as well.

still reported two lanes blocked from an overturned vehicle. we'll track that as the commute builds. in san francisco, it's not the freeways, but concerned with this major area around the mosconi center, right around 4th and howard. a critical juncture getting to and from the bay bridge. we have our rick boone out there. what's the latest? >> reporter: i just got out of a press conference with sf water. these are details i can tell you. first of all, about 221 residents will be without water all due to this water main break that happened here in the middle of the night. that's pretty much shut down this whole intersection at 4th and howard. those residents, by the way, it's affecting this apartment building here, the wolf senior apartments. i'm hearing from the maintenance guy inside low water pressure. but the water department saying water will likely be cut off.

this business will possibly lose water. the muss scone any center will be okay for now. not sure about the shopping center. the unfinished subway line being worked on, that's now experiencing a little water damage at this time. this all came from this break basically we're hearing from old pipes. there may be some substantial damage underground, all from this that happened in the overnight hours. the 12-inch break, around 3:30, 4:00 in the morning, sf water did shut it off. there's still a little pressure bubbling up, a little bit of the water at this point. it's under repair at this hour. the big concern is to the folks waking up this morning, especially the seniors in that apartment building and the businesses who need to operate this morning. they may not have water this morning. the mess, the mess is still here and it will be here for a while. we're still getting more details on this. i'll get back with you in just a

moment. back to you. >> thank you very much, rick. it's 5:33 right now. whooping cough concerns, a surge in reported pertussis cases in palo alto. kris sanchez at jordan middle school, one of the schools affected. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i know this time of year as a mom you watch for cough and flu symptoms. with this whooping cough cluster, there's one more thing you should watch for. it has that telltale barky little cough. we want to show you good video, not good video, but it's the sound we want you to listen for. that's what pertussis sounds like. [ coughing ]. >> reporter: that's the sound that at least 17 families have been hearing at home in santa clara county. we have interviewed a doctor with the santa clara county

health office before about pertussis and whooping cough. we learned it's normal to see a spike in cases though children are vaccinated starting in infancy. >> whooping cough or pertussis cycles every few years. we expect every few years there will be an increase in cases of pertuss pertussis. >> babies and children are vaccinated several times starting in infancy. but the dtap vaccine wears off. you need to ask your doctor about a booster, particularly after the age of 7. infants are particularly vulnerable because they're not fully immunized yesterday. pregnant woman are also vulnerable. watch for a cold with that barky little cough. and if your kids have that, call your doctor and don't send them to school for at least five days or until they've completed a five-day course of antibiotics. 2016 is the first year in which there has been no exemption for

vaccines, so everybody should be vaccinated at this point. we will remind you to remind your kids to cover their cough, like a vampire when they cough and make sure that washl their hands while they're at school so they don't pig up this bug or any other one. >> thank you very much, kris. 5:36 on your friday. a sigh of relief at san jose state after six cases of sexual assault there. police have made an arrest. police arrested this man and say he may be responsible for other unreported cases. investigators say they also have a lead on at least one other suspe suspect. the string of women groped on campus has some students keeping pepper spray close at hand and staying extra vigilant. >> i'm always cautious because of this area anyway. it's definitely keeping me more on edge. >> all the women here should definitely carry pepper spray just in case. >> the school plans to take several steps in the coming months to make the san jose state campus safer. that includes installing 24 more

security cameras, hiring morgue campus police officers and increasing the lighting. >> at 5:36 this morning, tonight marks one week since flames engulfed an oakland warehouse and killed 36 people inside. this morning the investigation into how this tragedy happened will move forward. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from oakland where the investigation stands. >> reporter: good morning, laura. even though the recovery effort at the ghost ship warehouse in oakland is complete, almost a week ago tonight that it did burn down. there's still a lot of analysis and investigative work that needs to be done. later today a special forensics team with the atf will come back out to the site and they're going to map the interior of the warehouse. that's the next step in trying to determine the cause of the fire. last night oakland city council declared a local state of emergency in connection with this tragedy. this will allow the families of those who died, nearby

that smelly issue with the tap water happens to be related to the rain. the public utilities commission says it was making room for rain water at the san antonio reservoir so it started adding water from there to the delivery decision on november 28th. that change delivered a flow of complaints from customers from san francisco all the way south to sunnyvale. testing reveals the cause is a naturally occurring bye product of blue-green allergy. the utility system says it will take time for the compound to be flushed out and expects the water to be back tasting normally in about a week. this is a pretty unpleasant site in san mateo. a big rig spilled chicken guts onto southbound 101 in san mateo. it happened near kehoe avenue just before the evening commute. three lanes were closed down for about an hour. apparently it sloshed out of the open trailer. sore rirks i know you're trying to eat breakfast. no word on where the big rig was

tomorrow. in between once again, we're seeing still light showers, and it's moving through parts of the east bay at this point with some fog and some light rain moving through right now. it's 55 degrees in livermore and morgan hill as well as palo alto, san francisco up to 60 degrees to start out the day. the hour-by-hour forecast shows at any point this morning or early afternoon, we could have light rain. we still see the clouds moving in, and the sun doesn't return until about sunday. looking at 11:30 tonight we once again have some of the rain and it gets heavier as we go towards sunrise tomorrow morning where we see the bright yellows and reds, showing a very intense rainfall. throughout the morning we have showers moving from north to south and clearing late tomorrow evening and once again into the day on sunday. additional rainfall totals may reach another inch in some spots like over toward murago and down

to the south bay we'll have about a quarter inch of rain in san francisco, a break of rain on sunday, and early next week, highs in the 50s and we'll see the same thing for the inland areas, really not that much warmer. heading over to mike, how is it looking on the roads? >> remember yesterday we had all the problems on the peninsula. no such issues today. also a lighter volume of traffic, a friday in december. in the north bay one major crash has two lanes of southbound 101 blocked. from time to time we see slowing south of lincoln drive. again, still have two lanes blocked by an overturned vehicle and we don't have any word from chp on when they can clear that. that will be an issue as the commute builds towards the golden gate bridge. heading toward the bay bridge, the water main break, we continue to follow that. rick boone is on the scene. so far we have to avoid the area
