savannah, mike and charlie. another story we're dealing with is the weather ask you should handle that. >> let's talk about the cold first. right now a lot of folks dealing with this first big blast of cold air and this arctic blast anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees below average. it feels like 18 in chicago and all of the way to atlanta it feels like 35 degrees and as we move on into tomorrow morning, the windchills, single digits to the teens make your way into saturday evening and on into sunday and the windchills are brutal, but this is just the beginning and right up around siberia and the temperatures this morning in the minus 20s to minus 50s and that will come across the arctic ocean due to a high pressure system and low pressure over canada, funneling that brutal cold air in. by wednesday, chicago 8, and 38 in nashville and 29 in new york city. the good news is it's not going

to hang around a long time, but it will feel awfully rough and for our friends around the great lakes, there is a lot of lake-effect snow and the localized bands dumping tons of snow. right now in upstate new york, we have kristen dahlgren in pulaski, new york. these folks are dealing with that. >> reporter: right. good morning, al. overnight we saw a few more inches here. some places have more than a foot and it is bitterly cold causing a lot of problems for a lot of people. from coast to coast, a wintry mess, icy cold temperatures and lots of snow making driving dangerous. >> in erie county, pennsylvania, more than a dozen cars piling up along interstate 90. at least ten people were taken to the hospital. while in michigan, a massive crash turning deadly. >> 30 vehicles. it's a complete white out. >> reporter: three killed when almost 40 cars slammed into each other in white-out conditions.

>> i was lucky enough that i could see the taillights in front of the semi. you just couldn't see. it was kingicking up that bad. >> reporter: marchiblanketing u new york, the arctic air sending temperatures plummeting. out west, the next system coming ashore bringing snow and ice to places like seattle and portland. only the heartiest heading out. >> i prefer to run outside. so i still do it. >> reporter: even in chicago where they are used to the chill. >> today is a shock because it has been pretty mild. >> reporter: they are bundling up and getting ready for what could be an even colder blast to come. >> you know it's frigid. it's like alaska. >> reporter: so, really, it may get worse out here and some 200 million people going to be affected, guys, over the next few days. >> kristen, thank you very much. now to the tributes that are

pouring in for a true american icon and hero, john glenn who died at the age of 95. as an astronaut he made history and inspired the nation. as a u.s. senator, he was one of the most respected people on capitol hill and his life is being celebrated this morning. nbc's tom costelo is at the national air and space museum. tom, good morning to you. >> good morning and this is friendship 7. this crude spacecraft that in 1962 john glenn piloted around the earth. it took tremendous courage. this was the soviet union space race, they were winning and the united states was determined to catch up. so this unassuming fighter pilot from ohio came back an american hero. across the country this morning tributes to an american original. from president obama, with john's passing our nation has lost an icon and michelle and i have lost a friend. from president-elect trump, he was a hero and inspired generations of future explorers.

apollo 13 star tom hanks tweeting, god speed, john glenn. from veteran nbc news correspondent jay barberi, a good friend. >> may the good lord ride all the way, and he did. we will miss him. >> reporter: it is no exaggeration to say john glenn was a giant in american history. >> three, two, one, zero. >> god speed, john glenn. >> best known for this moment. >> roger zero, jay, and i feel fine. oh, that view is tremendous. >> reporter: when in 1962 he became the first american to orbit the earth three times in a primitive spacecraft called friendship 7. he returned to such a hero's welcome, president kennedy decided he was too valuable to risk on another space mission, he was grounded, becoming nasa's biggest cheerleader. born in 1921, john glenn's roots were firmly planted in ohio.

he married his childhood sweetheart annie and he flew combat missions in world war ii and korea and flew supersonic speed as a test pilot and became one of the mercury 7 astronauts. >> i think there is a power greater than i am that will certainly see that i am taken care of if i do my part of the bargain. >> reporter: a close friend of the kennedy's, he was with bobby kennedy when he was gunned down in california. it was glenn who had to break the news to the kennedy children. in 1974 he was elected to the first four terms in the u.s. senate. then in 1998 he suited up again for a space shuttle mission. at the age of 77, the oldest astronaut to fly. >> i want to try to contribute more to learning about the whys of aging. hopefully we can lessen the frailties of old age that plague so many people. >> john glenn was, no question about it, out of par with any

other explorer that we've had in history, lewis and clark. >> his lifetime of achievement and service honored with the congressional gold medal and the presidential medal of freedom and in the senate on thursday, tributes. >> he always looked out for the little guy, and that was in his personal life and in his professional life as a senator, and it's what i particularly admire about him. >> reporter: an american through and through, and a life dedicated to family and country. john glenn is survived by his wife annie, two children and two grandchildren. i met and interviewed him several times over the years. he was always incredibly kind and patient especially for such an american icon, and we share the same barber here in washington, matt. he didn't have a lot of hair, but he was always there and his photo hangs very proudly in that barbershop. back to you. >> i would imagine. tom brokaw covered john glenn's historic return to space and interviewed him many times over the years and knew him well. good morning to you.

>> good morning. >> i think there sea a whole group of people in this country beneath a certain age who cannot even understand the guts and the courage it took to get in that capsule in 1962 and get on top of that rocket. >> i remember i was a senior in college and i looked for any excuse to skip class, and that day i remember when he lifted off, and it was a defining moment in american life. if norman rockwell were to draw the quintessential american hero it would be john glenn. throughout his life all of the famous friends he had his personality was just like this. it was never about him. he was so modest. i was with him two years ago when we rededicated john glenn college of public affairs in ohio state. what people didn't know and he told me when i got there he had macular degeneration. it was very hard for him. he'd been 20/20 until his 80s. >> the narrowing down the field for the mercury 7. he didn't love the movie, and didn't love the way he was

depicted in it and said by the way, the process was dramatic enough without hollywood intervening. >> he really liked tom wolf's book, and by the way, tom wolf was a friend of mine and we were at dinner about three years before the book, and i said what are you working on? i said to my wife, what else could be written and that is the defining book about it. >> back when he went back into space at the age of 77 we were all down there covering that. try to capture the emotion of that launch. >> it is very hard to describe, among other things i called ted williams who had been his wingman in korea and said would you come up and be our guest and he was in a wheelchair and he talked at one decibel which was way off the top. he said i'll be there. he couldn't wait to be there and ted didn't have a lot of heroes. john glenn was his hero. he said that was the best fighter pilot i've ever seen.

>> he succeeded at just about everything he did in life and he did not succeed on winning the press doneesy when he ran. what was his impact on politics? >> i think he did not win because he didn't play the larger role. steady as she goes, pilot in the cockpit and not going to do anything dramatic and he came from central ohio, and it was not a natural instinct for him to go out and blow himself up. i said to somebody, john glenn wouldn't do bombasts on twitter and he wouldn't have a multimillion dollar foundation and he was comfortable being the smalltown boy, and we have to mention annie. they had side by side cribs and they were married for 74 years. >> we'll hear part of an interview we did with john and annie later in the show. thanks. >> a pleasure. president-elect donald trump has a busy day ahead after taking his thank you tour to iowa last night. we're also hearing from hillary clinton who returned to capitol

partisanship. lives are at risk. as for that celebrity apresentence news, nbc entertainment has declined to comment. also today back here at trump tower, donald trump has more meetings scheduled including with the democratic west virginia senator joe manchin another possible cabinet pick before trump heads off to louisiana for a state get out the vote valley and another stop on that thank you tour in grand rapids, michigan, tonight. >> peter alexander, thank you. turn now to that high-profile trial of the south carolina man accused of killing nine people at a historic african-american church. on thursday, jurors were shown chilling videos of dylann roof at the scene on the day of the shooting. nbc gabe gutierrez has that story. >> reporter: this morning, day three of testimony in dylann roof's federal trial after jurors watched this never before seen security video that shows the moment roof entered and exited a charleston, south carolina, church on june 17th of

last year. allegedly killing nine parishioners following a bible study class. recorded by a motion activated camera, entering the church at 8:17 p.m. and leaving less than an hour later holding the weapon prosecutors say was used in the killings. he then got into a car and drove away. the same car roof was driving when police arrested him during a traffic stop the next day. more than 20 surveillance videos, including clips of the victims arriving at the church, as well as graphic photos of the crime scene were part of the exhibit shown to the jury. jurors also saw the snapchat video taken from inside the church before t shooting that prosecutors say places roof inside the building. all evidence federal prosecutors are using to build their case against a self-avowed white supremacist. the 22-year-old roof charged with 22 counts is facing the death penalty. if he's convicted and executed it would be the first involving hate crimes.

georgia. jody smith was a public safety officer at georgia southwestern state university. he was childhood friends and went to the police academy with officer nicholas smar who was also shot and killed in that incident. their shootings sparked a massive manhunt for the gunman. officials say that gunman apparently took his own life when authorities arrived at a home where he was hiding. the life and accomplishments of john glenn are be celebrating this morning. glenn died thursday at the age of 95. he became an american hero in 1962 when he became the first american to orbit the earth. he would go on to serve 24 years on capitol hill as a u.s. senator. another remarkable moment in glenn's life came in 1998 when he became the oldest man to go into space. i sat down with him and his wife, annie, shortly before that mission. >> let me just start with as simple a question as i probably have ever asked anybody -- why?

>> well, i've never felt that people should just look at the calendar and decide what they do in a particular stage of life. if you're interested in something and feel like it, and have good health to do it, why not do it? >> godspeed, john glenn. >> two, one, zero. >> reporter: 36 years after his history making leap into space, john glenn at age 77 was suiting up again. the mission this time to test the effects of spaceflight on an ageing body. >> some of the research we may be triggering off here may cut back a lot of the frailty of old age. you shouldn't be a couch potato and do what you feel like doing. if that's a benefit, well, so be it. >> reporter: but before lift-off his aging body had to go through eight months of grueling physical and mental training. >> that's enough for one day. >> how strenuous? how difficult? how much compared to what you went through back in the 1960s? >> the strenuous nature of it hasn't changed that much. that's much the same.

one thing nasa's always done, they say as long as you can pass your physicals, you're all ready to go. i'm told by the doctors anyway. i've had the moat complete physical checks of any astronaut that's ever gone up. >> reporter: it took the space veteran four years of tough lobbying to get nasa to let him go. but that it was an uphill battle compared to convincing annie. when they married he promised her a lifetime of excitement. by going into space again? >> i would say aen nnie was rat cool to this whole idea. >> your husband's 77. >> i'm older than he is. he asked me if i would like to, i said no way. >> would you admit he is kind of a hero? is. >> to me he is. he always has been. >> where did you get thisous sp? >> i don't know. i guess i've always been rather

husband's been assassinated. he said, no, but you must for the story. we have to see jackie become the curator of the kennedy legacy. i thought that was an interesting approach. >> there is a stillness in their conversation, even in the glances at one another, that's almost -- >> he has a career to keep up even after this article comes out. >> but it is the first lady. >> precisely. he ha is to see whether he's being used and then belittled as a puppet by his fellow journalists, or if he can draw something out of her that will be original. >> the other movie, "20th century women," from natalie portman to annette benning. both obviously phenomenal women if their own right. >> to get a chance to see any great performance up close is a real special thing. these two actors were giving superb performances and i felt really grateful and blessed to be a part of both experiences.
