>> a bomb scare has set off an investigation for a flight heading from houston, texas, to frankfurt, germany. it had to make an meerjs stop in new york. some 533 passengers and crew members had to be evacuated from that flight. the port authority spokesperson said the plane was taken to a remote area where it was searched. however, nothing suspicious was found. sdploo new orleans is mourning the loss of a former football star, joe mcknight. hundreds of loved ones attended his funeral service. five of his former teammates acted as pallbearers. the 28-year-old was fatally shot in a road rage incident on december 1st. the other driver in the instant was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection to mcknight's death. >> a giant sinkhole has closed a popular california beach. it opened up on the side of a cliff over the weekend, cutting

off the access path to pacifica beach south of san francisco. it may have been caused by king tides, which bring some of the biggest waves of the year onto shore. forecasters say the king tides may peak today or wednesday. >> a new winter storm is getting ready to bear down on 12 states or more across the united states. in fact, multiple states are already hard hit by massive amounts of snow. the icy conditions also causing havoc on the road where a series of pile-ups in flint, michigan, have left a dozen people injured. december 2015, the amount of snow in new england was minimal. this year, a near white-out. also much colder. new york has had three days with below average temperatures so far this december alone. minneapolis, six. chicago, seven. and next up, a plunge into the deep freezer for 28 million americans. temperatures 10 to 30 degrees below normal, believe it or not. meteorologist bill karins is here with more on the dangerous weather ahead. bill. >> we're going to get the cold, and then we're going to have a storm moving to the west that's going to move across the country.
