this morning as you step out, we have spots dipping at or below freezing. like in livermore, 32, morgan hill 31 degrees and 44 now in san francisco. not only that, but we do have another spare-the-air alert that will be another day with poor air quality in the north bay. that will continue into tomorrow as well. now as with we head over to mike, tracking a pursuit of some sort. >> there was a lot of activity going on. a lot of chatter on the scanners. we heard about a pursuit that started in oakland when across the bay bridge earlier this morning and into san francisco, got off the bridge about nine city industries and back on to 101 heading south into the city. i heard about a fender-bender at sil silva. i don't know if that's related. they have apprehended someone involved in that. there was a flatbed tow truck fleeing z from them down into bris bain. we'll get more details to change the situation. we'll see a little slowing where

the activity may have occurred. this is a inning chaing situation. the pursuit has ended on the peninsula. we'll get you more information including the status of your freeway. now to a developing story we've been following all night long. it is now tuesday morning in berlin in the light of day, we see this tragedy that people woke up to. a popular outdoor christmas market is now a crime scene. 12 people are dead after a truck ran into a crowd. a suspect arrested after the truck attack in berlin, quote, comes from pakistan and applied for asylum in the country of germany. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has the latest details on what we know so far. >> reporter: a magical christmas market turning to mayhem. >> it went just past me, past my girlfriend, i think it missed me by three meters, her by five.

witnesses describing the horror as they saw a truck jumping a curb and plowing through a crowd in central berlin. >> i didn't see any concrete bars to stop things like this driving in. >> reporter: it happened around 8:00 p.m. berlin time in an area packed with locals and tourists. >> i saw someone being dragged away with blood on his nas. i helped several people lift one of the side of the stores up. >> reporter: emergency responders rushing to the scene, finding chaos. damage to the truck severe. the front window smashed. >> that was cheryl hurd reporting, as you see from live pictures in berlin. the truck is now gone. all of those emergency responders and ambulances no longer there. a hollow reminder of what took place in the last 24 hours. stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of this

tragedy. we'll have more details on the story coming up in a live report at 5:30. much closer to home, there's a lot of cleanup ahead for a north bay catholic school after vandal attacks caused extensive damage. flights responded to an alarm last night at santa rosa's cardinal newman high school. they found a man inside the building smashing windows and throwing objects. you can see here just how bad that damage is at over $100,000. sonoma county deputies arrived and took the man into custody peacefully. he's identified as 23-year-old andrew faulkner from guerneville now facing multiple charges. "today in the bay's" pete suratos will join us with a live report in our 5:00 a.m. hour. a double shooting in antioch left one woman fighting for her life. this is surveillance video that shows two men walking down the road near 18th street. this happened about noon. suddenly a suspect pulls out a gun, fires several times.

we spoke to neighbors who witnessed this scary ordeal. >> i was in bed, and i just heard this loud noise, but it continued. so maybe about -- >> that video shows bullets smashing through the window of a parked car. police say another stray bullet went into a passing car hitting a woman in the head. the woman underwent surgery for several hours. right now we don't know her condition this morning. a second victim was also found nearby but is expected to survive. police took a number of persons of interest into custody at a nearby apartment complex. contra costa county deputies say an armed car jacker forced a woman in her porsche. the woman was not injured and the car was never located. happening today, the santa clara county registrar's office is going to start recounting a closely contested city council

race. supporters for jimmy nguyen have asked for a recount. he lost to sylvia arenas by less than 100 votes. the county normally conducts recounts, but because nguyen's campaign requested this, it will be more detailed and paid for by his campaign. 4:36. climbing out of the freezing start very slowly. kari is tracking the ever-so-light warmup. >> still cold out there this morning. even if some spots below freezing as you head out the door. we will have warmer air in the forecast and then comes the rain. we'll talk about all that coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> we just had some flashing lights leave this seen, the bay bridge toll plaza. this is also where we had a pursuit from the east bay or the peninsula where it has ended. it's have the latest on the 101, the affect on your drive and more background on this pursuit. the date is set.

this morning. here is a live look outside in san jose. in santa clara we'll be at 49 degrees at 9:00, all sunshine all day long. we will be closer to average for this time of year. we'll take a look at the complete microclimate forecast coming up in about five minutes. >> judging by the speeds and the work, we're getting information on the peninsula southbound 101 may be stopped at sierra point parkway and brisbane, the end of a police and chp pursuit. use 280 for now. we'll get you more updates in just a couple minutes. you can officially mark it on your calendars, january 20th, donald trump is going to be inaugurated as the 45th president of the united states after being selected officially by the electoral college. >> the votes are ten votes donald j. trump. >> yesterday's electoral college vote was hardly typical you see. normally a 230r78ality.

some of those temperatures, still chilly, still forecast on the windshield. in photographer, 44 degrees, 34 in the north bay. into this afternoon, it will feel a little better, upper 50s to low 60s, last day of fall today. winter official begins early tomorrow morning. with us being right in the middle of the cold season, we are seeing a lot of cold air across the region, but not as cold as it was. temperatures are starting to moderate just a bit, and we're watching the next storm system that is well to the north of us. it will take its time getting here with some wet weather, but it won't be until about the end of the week. we will see our next storm system moving in, and it looks like, as a lot of people get ready to travel for the christmas holiday, it will be very wet out there. we'll be watching that one and also another one moving in on sunday. it looks to stay active, even through next week. so a lot of rain in the forecast. if you will be traveling, keep

in mind, it looks like i-5 will be wet and windy. we may have heavy snow around lake tahoe, both going 80 and highway 50, and heading down from here to l.a. will be rainy and a little bit of a break on christmas day, especially early. there's a lot of rain in this forecast for the weekend. early next week, the next few days will be dry. san francisco warming up into the upper 50s, low 60s for the inland areas. once that cool air rolls in on friday, the rain won't be far behind. we'll be keeping tabs on that. as we head over to mike, keeping an eye on the pursuit. >> we had the pursuit, it started in san leandro, a flatbed tow truck, there was a warrant for that, a stolen vehicle. that pursuit went across the bay bridge, on to city streets, back onto the freeway and right here at south 101 at sierra point parkway. we have a crew that's arriving on scene. my friend matt is telling me all lanes are blocked for southbound 101 as you're heading over the water.

he's able to get a shot in just a couple minutes, but this is causing all the traffic to stop. they said they're loading the vehicle in question and that person has been arrested and taken away from the scene. bayshore boulevard, sierra point parkway, those are two options for you. 280 a much easier drive for you to get past that scene. we're tracking that scene on the peninsula, but the rest of the bay moves very well. no worries on the peninsula for you folks there. looking at drive times, a smooth flow of traffic. the drive time was up to 32 minutes. it changed from 32 to 13 just before we took this shot here. that could mean they have just reopened the freeway. i'll double check and get you more information. be prepared for more slowing south of san francisco. this other issue i'm watching is in the tri-valley, out of pleasanton and livermore. there is a crash on highway 84 by the connector where you split up northbound and southbound

investigation into the misuse welcome back. our year and a half long investigation into the misuse of school police officers is now getting the attention of the whougs. >> the country's secretary of education is pleading with schools across the country toe take immediate action to stop overusing law enforcement to discipline students. tonight at 11:00, investigative reporter bigad shaban speaks about the on going investigation into how children are getting arrested for what some describe as childish misbehavior. >> we found some schools in the bay area where students are getting criminal records before they even hit puberty. >> that's right.
