scarves on. it's not that bad. >> i went jogging, and it was about 45 degrees over the weekend. my throat still hurts. i can only imagine what it's like for the runners out there and it's below freezing or even in the teens. we're not dealing with that. hey, it's still cold. it's 32 degrees now in the tri-valley. it's dropped down. freezing temperatures there, frost elsewhere in san francisco. 44 degrees. bundle up as you head out. warm you up with some 60s in the forecast in just a few minutes. heading over to mike, a minor crash in dublin. >> talking the possibility of frost and black ice. none reported. we did have some yesterday. this is not playing a factor in the krach. south 680 past the dublin interchange, looks like lanes are clear, just mild slowing through pleasanton. orange to yellow, that means speeds have improved as you pass by stoneridge. i want to talk about the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on. we have the backup here right on

schedule. we see the fast track lanes moving better and maybe a lighter commute. can't hardly move through this area now, earlier this morning a lot of flashing lights. >> wait until you see the video. breaking news we're following this morning, a lengthy chase from oakland to the peninsula is finally over, and a tow truck driver is in custody. it's a story we've been following since we came on air at 4:30 this morning. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us from brisbane where it finally ended. piece this altogether for us. >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. we're here along northbound 101. it was the southbound direction of 101 that was shut down for a good 20 to 30 minutes earlier this morning. as you can see, the brake lights heading southbound, no residual effects from the car chase that ended over here. it started around 3:20 when police tried to pull over the driver of what they say was a stolen flatbed tow truck.

you can see video on your tv screen of that tow truck blasting through the bay bridge toll plaza with law enforcement not too far behind. the truck is certainly going well over the speed limit. at one point he got off the interstate, went onto the streets of san francisco and in the process we understand that's when at least two chp cars were damaged, one moderately, the other suffering minor damage. the driver eventually took chp and police back on southbound 101. you can see them in the south part of the city. the speeds well below the speed limit at this point because his tires were punctured by spike strips be employed by police. it was around 4:30 this morning that the chase finally came to an end, southbound 101 at sierra point in brisbane. the driver hopped out of the truck, ran across the northbound lanes of 101. you can see the officers in a mad dash to try to cash them. they did finally catch up to him, arrest him in a nearby parking lot. no one was hurt. as i mentioned, all southbound

lanes of 101 were shut down. as you can see behind me, speeds at the limit. there's no effect on the morning commute. reporting live along northbound 101 in brisbane, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> quite the shiite there, bob. at 6:03, we're following significant developments out of berlin, germany, where a suspected terrorist plowed a truck into a crowded christmas market killing 12 people. that's video from last night when the attack unfolded. nbc's edward lawrence reported in the last half hour that german prosecutors said a suspect taken into custody is not the person behind the attack. they have the wrong person, which means police are still looking for the suspect. there's a manhunt under way right now. we are just learning that a person found shot inside the truck was the original driver and had been killed in the carjacking. so far there's no claim of responsibility from isis. it is 6:03. new this morning, as students and faculty return to class, there will be a lot of cleanup

ahead for a north bay catholic school after a vandal caused extensive damage. we have new video showing some of the destruction. last night an alarm went off at cardinal newman high school in santa rosa. firefighters responded and found a man inside the building smashing windows and throwing objects. damage estimated at $100,000. sonoma county deputies arrived and took the man into custody. the suspect is identified as 23-year-old andrew faulkner from guerneville, he's facing multiple charges including burglary, vandalism and being under the influence. an ac transit bus driver has life-threatening injuries after crashing into a tree in oakland. this shows the aftermath of the crash. it happened just before 10:00 last night at the intersection of 10th and oak, a couple blocks from the lake merrick b.a.r.t. station. the scene is clear this morning.

a very serious situation in san francisco where a woman in is the hospital right now in critical condition after being rescued from underneath a bus at a busy san francisco intersection. this happened about 7:00 last night at third and market streets. witnesses say the woman was running across the street when she was hit by the bus. rescuers scrambled to try to remove her from underneath it. the intersection was closed for more than an hour. if you spend any time in downtown san francisco, you know how dangerous that intersection can be. >> many times i would hear screeching and you'd look out the window and i always said, if you saw them limping to the corner, they probably ran the red light. >> muni says that woman may end up losing the use of her legs, but she is expected to survive. a case of road rage turned an east bay highway into a, paging lot during the even commute yesterday. police are searching for the driver who riddled another car

with bullets. the confrontation started about 1:00 in the of a noon on east 580. the driver of a honda admitted to tailgating and making a rude gesture at the driver of a mercedes. the driver of the mercedes driving took off. at 6:06 this morning, new details on the deadly big rig crash on interstate 680 we brought you yesterday on "today in the bay." a fedex contracted truck headed to a usps center in san jose crashed in danville. the driver died but has not been identified. packages little tered the freeway. the united states postal service says about 200 packages are so damaged, they can't determine who sent them or where the packages were headed. >> fedex is going to pick it up, take it back to where their hub is. if they start getting tracking calls, at least fedex will be

able to identify where that mail might be. >> several thousand other packages apparently did make it out intact and are on their way to their destination. from tears to smiles very quickly. what started as a heartbreaking story now becoming a heartwarming one. >> a single mother of four had her car full of presents stolen. police did more than just catch the criminals. marilyn santos was christmas shopping last week when her car was stolen. she says the car was packed full of gifts along with her kids' car seats. last week morgan hill police spotted her car in a target parking lot. sadly those gifts were nowhere to be found. officers teamed up with target to buy santos and her children new gifts and new car seats. >> i have never in my life got any gift like that. >> victimized once when a car was stolen, we didn't want her

victimized again. >> the couple who stole the car were booked into jail on suspicion of car theft, identity theft and drug crimes. good news, happy ending. >> good tuesday morning. it is 6:08. as you head out, below freezing in parts of the bay area again. the fourth morning in a row. it's 30 degrees in morgan hill. 32 degrees in livermore and concord at 34. still frost in spots like palo alto, san jose as well as napa. san francisco, 45 degrees with clear skies. a live look outside from san rafael, traffic is moving smoothly. it is cold. for the north bay, another spare-the-air alert with unhealthy air quality. no wood burning today and tomorrow. we'll talk about a warmup in the forecast and rain coming up in about ten minutes. mike has some slowing for san jose. >> just a little slowing. this is tuesday where we expect

hef very volume. it's just a little bit right here, 101 at 680. typical pattern. but very, very mild commute right now. 680 through pleasanton and sunol, slowing in that area. a nice easy build through hey warped and toward union city. no major problems. bay bridge, 16 minutes through the maze and across the span itself. the metering lights are on. the backup is there. no problems across the peninsula via the san mateo bridge or the dumbarton bridge. a quick look at the peninsula. light volume for 101, the bayshore freeway. we'll see the metering lights turned off. today maybe about 9:15, 9:30. we'll track it. >> trafficology there. thank you very much. up next, customers have criticized apple forgetting rid of the iphone jack on the phone. this could be the reason why. the high price you have to pay if you lose the wireless ear bud. a teacher shortage.

the near term. we'll talk about big changes for the weekend. that's coming up in about five minutes. >> here is the slowest portion of your commute right now. the tri-valley. it's very mild. i did discover a new incident on highway 84 which could slow you down unexpectedly. looking toward the bay bridge approach. only build for the upper eastshore freeway. 24 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge itself. live at a look in berlin, germany this morning where angela merkel has just arrived at the scene of yesterday's suspected terror attack. this is where a suspected terrorist plowed his truck into a crowded christmas market killing 12 people. >> there are new developments this morning. we've learned within the last half hour or 45 minutes our so ha the man initially arrested and suspected of playing a role in that heinous attack there in germany was not the person they were looking for. it was a pakistani refugee that police determined was not the person responsible for the attack which means there's a manhunt under way right now.

we're learning new developments by the minute and we will continue providing updates throughout the course of this morning. well, there was no wrongdoing in the handling of the brock turner sexual assault case. that's the decision issued by the california commission on judicial performance concerning judge aaron persky. the santa clara county judge has been under fire more months. in june he sentenced brock turner to six months in jail and three years' probation for the sexual assault of an unconscious woman. the commission says persky did not commit misconduct in this case or demonstrate bias against women in four other cases. the stanford law professor leading the effort to re call persky says they'll continue to press for a recall vote on next year's ballot. 6:14 right now. tackling a serious teacher shortage in san francisco. the san francisco unified school district has crafted its own plan to solve the problem. the district is creating its own teaching program. the train willing be for one year. classes will be next spring and

summer and teachers will be placed in a classroom and coached by a veteran teacher. right now that training is going to be for elementary and special education positions first. the districts plans to eventually expand the program to other grade levels. at long last, apple iphone 7 owners are getting their hands on the wireless ear buds. they went on sale yesterday after weeks of delay. many apple stores sold out in moments. if you lose one, it will cost you. losing an air pod is not covered under warrantee. individual replacements cost $69. a new pair will run you $159. more and more americans are now online shoppers. but most people prefer buying from stores instead of online. a new study by the pew research center found a whopping 79% of americans are online shoppers. even as more americans are online shopping, 64% prefer buying from stores. half of the public has bought

something online using their mobile phone. 15% made purchases by following a link on social media. when the center asked about online shopping in 2000, just 22% of americans had bought something online. we've come a long way. >> a high profile meeting. apple's tim cook is defending his decision to meet with donald trump. >> not everyone at apple is convinced. >> no. a lot of people in silicon valley have hesitation about donald trump. he said he'll add a 35% tariff to iphones and other items made in china. tim cook met with trump last week and said it's better to be in the game than on the sidelines. he sent a memo to apple employees who were upset explaining he'll meet with anyone. the way to influence issues is to be in the arena. whether it's in this country or the european union or china or

south america, we engage. remember the head of japan's softbank, mash oesh she son said he'll invest in american jobs, he's starting, a factory being build in florida. more worries about the shifter on dodge trucks. you may recall a dodge suv rolled and pinned z an actor from star trek killing him. the national highway safety commission is looking at the dodge durango. the new dodges use dials instead of the standard stick to select park. either people are not using it right or it doesn't work because there are reports of trucks rolling away. the 2013 and 2016 ram 1500 pickup is under the same investigation. there you see the dodge durango. previous recalls include the charger, the chrysler 300 and jeep grand cherokee. wall street starting to the positive today. stocks did rise monday with the

>> not quite as cold, but still freezing in spots. you do need a lot of layers. the next several mornings we'll see this cold air starting to slowly loosen its grip. so far, it's still cold, the fourth morning in a row as we take a live look outside at san francisco. all clear skies as you head out. heater up and it's only 48 degrees. highs today reaching 57. here is what to expect. it will be nice and sunny today, allowing those temperatures to make it close to average for this last day of fall. the rest of the week will be staying dry and mild with some breezy winds. and then this weekend, not one but two storms moving in, and that could make for some treacherous travel if you're going across the region. we'll talk about that. it's 32 degrees now in livermore, 30 in morgan hill, still some frosty conditions from san jose to palo alto. oakland at 38 degrees. and san francisco 45. today highs reaching the upper 50s to lower 60s. napa and santa rosa today at 671

degrees. another storm system to the north is bringing wet weather. this one will dry out before it moves in. then we'll be tracking the next storm system here once again on friday into the weekend. it looks like it could bring in quite a bit of rain and some gusty winds. we'll take a break on saturday, another one moving in late on christmas day into the start of next week. it looks pretty active behind that point. rainfall totals could reach into the range of about .75 inch to close to 1 inch. not that impressive as far as rainfall, but also some breezy winds that could once again throw a wrench in those travel plans. heading overthrow the sierra, it will be snowing, some heavy wet snow going on there, and from 101 to l.a., rainy. the seven-day forecast brings in some chilly temperatures for the mornings, mild afternoons and rain for the weekend. warmest day will be the first

day of winter. let's head over to mike for a new concern for the tri-valley. >> also concerned that it's cold and it's not even winter yet technically. the bay commute looking really light as we typically see, the winter vacations kicking in for schools around the bay. some did kick in last week. the south bay and innocence, light volume of traffic. a concern from the tri-valley. just heard about a disabled vehicle where you lose a lane for highway 84. no additional slowing has showed up westbound. eastbound maybe a distraction for the flashing lights. typical spots for slowing 680 and 880. lighter across the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge. the san mateo bridge, you see westbound a little slowing cross the flat section. you see no problems getting towards the bay bridge. muni might have delays through the construction zone on van ness, 47 and 49 are the lines that may potentially be affected. back to you.

back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. we are following breaking news this morning. we just got word a couple minutes ag grow that san francisco mayor ed lee is going to announce who will become the next police chief for the city. that announcement will be made at 11:00 this morning. city leaders narrowed it down to three finalists back in november. former police chief greg suhr resigned in maybe. toney chaplin has been the acting chief for the city since then, he is also one of the finalists. we'll bring you that news conference live during our midday newscast. someone who stole a tow truck is in custody this morning after leading police on a chase from oakland to the peninsula. it's a story we've been following since we went on air at 4:30. >> let's get straight to "today in the bay's" bob redell who joins us live in brisbane where that chase ended a couple hours ago. bob, do you have any updates from investigators? >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. this was a 70-minute car chase that by our count went through

five cities ending just over that small incline there on southbound 101 in brisbane. it started around 3:20 this morning when san leandro police tried to pull over the driver of what they say was a stolen flatbed tow truck. you can see the video as he blasted through the bay bridge toll plaza and across the bridge itself at speeds well over the limit with chp in pursuit. at one point the driver got off the interstate and onto the streets of san francisco, and in the process damaged two chp cars, one moderately, the other minor. eventually back on the southbound 101, you should be able to see this video now as the southbound at hospital curve, the south part of the city, he speeds well below limit because his tires were punctured by spike strips deployed by police. it was around 4:30 the chase finally came to an end on southbound 101 here at sierra point. the driver hopped out of the truck, ran across northbound 101, the opposite direction.

you can see the officers in a mad dash to catch him. they did arrest him in a nearby parking lot. no one was hurt. all lanes of southbound 101 were shut down for a little time there. as you can see behind me, they are reopen, and we've got a full morning, tuesday morning commute on the peninsula. live in brisbane, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, job. there is extensive damage left behind at a bay area high school after a vandal broke in last night, started smashing glass all over the place, breaking things inside, throwing objects. this video into our newsroom showing what it looks like this morning. taish's pete suratos joining us from cardinal newman high school. you spoke to the school's president. what did they say? >> reporter: we did talk to the school president to let us know how the school is feeling at this time. we do know authorities arrested 23-year-old andrew faulkner of guerneville.

we still don't know exactly if there's any connection to cardinal newman. you can see the windows are boarded up following this act of vandalism. there's trophy cases crushed, even a statue in there, looks like an arm is ripped off. we'll show you more from footage from inside. the president says she thinks the suspect used a fire extinguisher to do a lot of damage. you see broken glass casings and debris all over the floor from shattered windows, damaged window blinds. and the statues disseminated as a result of this. according to the sheriff's office, they say they were loaded by firefighters who showed up to the scene after a fire alarm went off. the man was taken into custody without incident and has been booked where he faces charges of burglary, vandalism and being under the influence of controlled substances. the president of the school says she does president know what the

motive was behind this vandalism. >> probably what will be the same reaction by our students, faculty and staff. we feel like this is very much our community and our home, and to have someone come in and violate your personal belongings and destroy what is around us -- >> reporter: violation indeed, and according to the present, it looks like most of the damage was contained to the main office. it looks like at least $100,000 worth of damage. we're told classes will resume as usual. but they'll walk into the scene and their christmas break starts tomorrow. live in santa rosa, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:35. new this morning, exclusive video of a double shooting in antioch that left a woman fighting for her life. surveillance video shows two men

walking down core val la road and one pulls out a gun and opens fire several times. a straight bullet went into a mask car, hitting a woman in the head. so far we don't know her condition this morning. we spoke the neighbors who witnessed the frightening ordeal. >> i was in bed, and i just heard these loud noise, but it continued. >> a second victim was found nearby but is expected to survive. police took a number of persons of interest into custody at a nearby apartment complex. we're loss following a story out of berlin, germany. the death toll has risen to 12 after a truck plowed through a bustling christmas market yesterday. nearly 50 others were injured in the incident. within the last hour we've learned a suspect in custody may not have been behind the attack. lawrence live in washington, d.c. with the new details we're learning about this investigation. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning. right now there's a manhunt going on in berlin. they do believe the attacker is still on the loose and armed. initially there was somebody who was arrested this morning. but that person has been deemed -- they weren't certain that person was actually the driver of this truck. they do believe that the attacker, it was the driver of the truck, is still on the loose. 12 people, as you said, have been killed. 48 more injured. of those 48, there's many of them in critical condition, so the death toll could rise. one o of the folks found dead was found in the passenger seat of the 18-wheeler. it's believed that that passenger was actually the original driveer of the truck and the attacker killed the driver, stole the truck and went on this rampage. witnesses say the tractor-trailer came at 40 miles an hour into the crowd into this christmas parked area. they had a lot of people

bustling around. this has had ripple effects in the united states. many large cities have increased security around popular areas that are christmas destinations for those people who are visiting or folks who live in the it isity. live in washington, edward lawrence. >> at 6:38 this morning. turkish police have detained a man who fired shots in front of the u.s. embassy in that country's capital hours after the russian ambassador to tour i can was killed in an attack. the man hit a shotgun in his coat and fired eight shots into the air before security guards stopped him. the incident happened a few hours after an off-duty turkish policeman fatally shot the russian ambassador in front of a shocked crowd that gathered at a photo exhibit. the gunman yelled "don't forget alep aleppo, don't forget syria" before he was shot and killed by police.

police haven't said whether the two incidents were connected. the man who ran the ghost ship warehouse is pointing fingers at several different organizations. the legal team says their client shouldn't be made a scapegoat. 36 people died in the oakland warehouse fire. almena's attorney says the sheriff's office, building code department should be blamed for the catastrophic loss of life. they say the government agencies should be added as potential defendants in any civil lawsuits saying, quote, civil lawyers look for a deep pocket defendants in such a case. here, the only deep pockets are those of alameda county and the property owners, closed quote. happening today, the slount registrar's office will start a recount on a very contested, very close city council race. supp poert rs for jimmy nguyen have asked for the recounts in the district 8 council seat. he lost to sylvia arenas by fewer than 100 votes.

the county could normally conduct a recount in a race that tight anyway, but because nguyen's campaign requested it, it will be far more detailed and paid for by his campaign. sacred heart community service is getting ready for the annual holiday meal distribution. >> those boxes are packed and ready to go. batch of 300 hams. later this morning, the san jose fire department will donate 33 full turkey dinners, one from each of their firehouses. in the last couple minutes we wandered over into the toy room where there are about 10,000 toys there. they are ready to go. what sacred heart does to preserve the dignity of the family, they don't bring the kids in to choose something. they bring the parents in so the parents can pick what they want for their children. the parents can wrap them and give them to the kids and the kids don't have to know that the family is struggling if the parents don't want them to know that. but they have about 8,000 fewer toys than they need, than they promised. sacred heart is asking you to put them on your holiday shopping list. >> we are running short on toys. so parents are going to be coming back on thursday and friday this week to pick out toys. it looks like we're about 8,000 toys short this year. so here is the information. if you can still donate, sacred

resigned in may. mayor lee is holding an 11:00 news conference. the driver of a stolen flatbed tow truck is in custody after leading police on an early mornings chase that wound through four different cities and lasted more than an hour. police say officers tried to pull the truck over in san leandro, and the driver of that stolen truck took off. the chase ended on highway 101 in brisbane where police say the driver made a run for it across the highway. officers eventually caught up to him. an ac transit bus driver has life-threatening injuries after crashing into a tree in oakland. this is video showing the aftermath of that crash. it happened just before 10:00 last night at the intersection of 10th and oak, just a couple blocks away from the lake merritt b.a.r.t. station. the bus slammed into the tree. the driver hospitalized with major injuries. the scene is now clear this morning. it has been a very busy morning here in san francisco bay area. also we're learning new developments from germany as
