good morning. we are in a microclimate weather alert as this storm system moves into the bay area with heavy rain, gusty winds and the potential of thunder and lightning as well. i'll have details coming up in the forecast. pete suratos in the north bay where we're monitoring the wet conditions all morning long. i'll be bringing that to you coming up. breaking news from overseas. suspect killed. italian police confront the man wanted for the massacre in germany after days on the run. the reason the intense search ended with gunfire. radar. you see those thick pockets of yellow and orange in the middle of the screen now coming over san francisco, parts of the peninsula. we have crews all over the bay area. we'll have live reports every half hour. good morning. thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm sam. >> i'm laura. >> very casual. >> casual friday. >> there we go. it's going to be a busy wet one out there. >> this is the biggest travel day, one of the biggest travel days of the year. we're dealing with a very big storm system that could throw a wrench in those travel plans. we will have sometimes of rain all day long, gusts 55 to 35 miles per hour. rainfall totals may reach to an inch. it will be enough to leave standing water on the roadways and also puddles. lightning will be possible, especially later this afternoon. there may be snow at mt. hamilton by tomorrow morning and also a chance at the summit as well. i'll detail this in a few minutes. mike is tracking the wet roads

and how it impacts your commute. >> we should have a light commute as we do this time every year. folks heading across town as well as doing errands and heading to pick up loved ones at the airport. anywhere north of the san mateo bridge is wet. anywhere south of there experiencing a little break. that's coming in. we see more blue. that's where ponding and puddling is along the peninsula. anyone north of san mateo, blue along the wester sign. in san rafael, a change over the last five minutes went from green to blue, ponding, puddling. you see the water kicking up and depositing on the roadway there. you have much better pictures. back to you. >> pete suratos, he, in fact, starts our team coverage this morning. he's he's seeing the rain coming down. how is it going out there, keith? >> reporter: good morning, laura. the rain has been coming down as we drive off 101 north.

we're actually in core dough madera. the area prone to flooding, one of the two key spots. with the showers coming down heavy, really in the past 20 minutes, it sounds repetitive. you want to be driving cautiously when you're on the road. not too many folks on the road. this is one of the areas that's prone to flooding here in corda madeira, you can see there's not any flooding happening right now. when the rain picks up, it could be a problem. near manzanita park we'll eventually check out. because of the rain coming down, that could be an issue. giving you a look through this live drive all morning long monitoring these wet conditions, bring an umbrella, bring your coat, bring something to cover up this morning because that rain is coming down pretty heavy guys in the north bay. back to you in the newsroom. >> thanks so much, pete.

that's what it looks like from corda madeira. kris sanchez took pete's advice with the umbrella and the rain gear. at the aviation museum, how is it looking, kris? >> reporter: it's going okay. the producers, you don't look wet just yet. we're taking advantage of the overhang. you can see big fat raindrops coming down from the sky. we're at the hiller aviation museum. this is where we found our first serious batch of rain this morning as we headed from san jose up through the peninsula. we'll continue driving down from san carlos, down the peninsula this morning, trying to see what we can. we've been using the nbc bay area app to keep track of things. this is why we know we're going to be heading south this morning because that's the batch of rain that we're following for you this morning. we always say get the nbc bay area app. it's not just because it's good for us. it's good personally. i use it as i'm running around town with my kids after work.

for your community. pretty big breaking news on this friday morning. the international manhunt in the deadly attack is over. 24-year-old anis amri was shot. it started with a routine security check in milan when police at a train station asked for amri's papers. that's when he pulled out a handgun and managed to shoot one police officer before being killed. that officer was hit in the shoulder and is expected to survive. authorities are looking into amri's ties to isis. >> as the holiday weekend approaches, festivities ramping up. bay area law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drunk driving. san jose police wrapped up a checkpoint downtown on 4th street right off san fernando. teams funneling three lanes there down to one. ten officers were staffed to evaluate drivers. while this check point is over, there are more planned between

now and the new year. >> anybody that we see is impaired, we will run a sobriety check on them and make an arrest if it's warranted. >> as for the results, we're still awaiting an update from police on the number of arrests that officers make. it's a christmas traditions. every year a group of hikers put up a christmas tree. here they are. they've done the same trek to the summit for the past four years. once at the top, that's when the decorating begins. hundreds of people on instagram have snapped selfies with the tree using #christmasonthepeak. >> good thing it's not waterlogged. >> good thing they went yesterday. the quick moving system zeroing in on large parts of the bay area. kari hall is watching your microclimate weather alert. >> it's going to be a wet day

heavy rain continues to move imt the bay area as we get a look at the radar, we corporate to see bright reds and yellows showing very intense rainfall. it's coming down in some parts of the north bay, close to an inch per hour. we will see this for several hours as we continue to go through the morning and early afternoon. but there may be a few breaks in between. we'll table a closer look at this radar which you can expect as we head into the holiday weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >> kari, you show what it looks like on the radar. here is what it looks like on the roads. this is san rafael, highway 101. lightly populated, slick roadways, we continue to track as the rain is getting started. >> 4:41. felony sexual assault charges have been filed against a 15-year-old dela salle football player three weeks after he was arrested and released. the student is not being

identified. investigators say that that assault happened on november 18th after a football game. they say the victim goes to a nearby high school. one former de la salle student says both campuses will be impacted. >> i was hoping his teammates would hold him accountable for that. there are things that students do that their classmates have to kind of look and see that -- make sure they don't see anyone else going down that track. >> police initially arrested the suspect about a week after the report was filed. prosecutors said they needed more time to investigate, and he was released. >> we're hearing new details this morning about the brutal beating awful a morgan hillman. the suspect facing charges that could put him in prison for life. after a week-long manhunt, mark weber turned himself in to police. he appeared in a morgan hill courtroom. he's facing attempted murder charges with a premeditation enhancement that could result in

a life sentence. weber had been on the run since december 9th. prosecutors say he beat his neighbor with a baseball bat because the man's dog had gone to the bathroom on his lawn. the victim is still in the hospital. two men have a confrontation with ivanka trump ahead of a flight to san francisco. then something dashes their plans. live to the east bay. the bay bridge toll plaza, the storm making its way into the bay area. it's going to be a very wet morning. a microclimate weather alert continues. weather and traffic coming up.

==laura///live== 4:46 right now on your fld. ifs already a wet start for many people as they get out the door. the latest on our doppler radar. that storm system moving its way inland. this is the first wave. it's going to be an all-day rain event kari hall will join us with more. breaking news this morning, just coming into our newsroom. two hijackers have diverted a libyan commercial plane to malta. they're threatening to blow it up with hand grenades. this is a live look from malta international airport. all flights intimal that international have been diverted. officials say the flight heading initially to tripoli had 118 people on board. a negotiating team is on standby awaiting instructions from the prime minister in a meeting with

the national security committee. we'll continue to follow this breaking news story and bring updates as they come to us. pretty tense moments on a flight headed to san francisco that got two men kicked off the plane. it started with a passenger tells ivanka trump, coat, the trump family is ruining the country. >> dan goldstein and matthew lazer in were put on another flight and eventually made it to sfo where tmz cameras were waiting for them. they had no comment. this happened after goldstein confronted trump in the cabin. you see one of the pictures there. l lazner tweeted out a response to his husband's comment. he's tweeting about seeing the couple and wanting to confront them at jfk. some passengers say removing the men from the flight was the right call. >> if i was security, i wouldn't take a chance either. >> trump and her family remained

on board the plane. they did land at sfo and boarded a private jet to hawaii. >> turning to business news, amazon has a message for holiday shopping procrastinators. you're probably going to like it. >> plus, are you considering apple's latest macbook pro as a present. for that and the rent of the news before the bell, we turn to seema modi live at cnbc world headquarters. >> wall street will try to head into the holiday weekend on a positive note. futures are higher. storks did sell off for a second straight day yesterday. the dow has not had a back-to-back loss since before the election. the dow jones industrial average still on pace for a seven democratic week winning streak. the dow falling 23 and the nasdaq slipping by 24. now, consumer reports says it can't recommend apple's latest macbook pro on concerns on the battery life. the first time the magazin has ever withheld a recommendation on the apple life. it says it tested three

different models and the battery life varied widely. something customers have also complained about. switching to amazon, amazon says procrastinate all you want with your christmas shopping. it's extending the deadline to order items with the prime rush delivery service which is available in 30 u.s. cities. you have until 9:45 p.m. on christmas eve to ensure delivery by midnight on christmas day. great news for the last-minute shoppers out there. >> every minute counts. >> that's really pushing it, don't you think? >> exactly. something under the tree for everyone. >> thanks, seema. a live look outside from pete suratos, he's heading towards the golden gate bridge from march ryne county. we've been watching for the last 30 minutes or so. since we've been on air, the raindrops coming down consistently. >> we've been warning you about the storm coming into the bay

area. it is here. let's check in are kari right now. how strong and how long. it will last for quite a while. getting the first round starting out with heavy downpours. as we go to the rest of the day, there may be a few breaks in between. as we get a look at what's happening out there, we see a swath of very heavy rain moving in initially with the first round. i've seen lightning offshore. it hasn't made it into the inland areas. that will be something we'll be watching later today with more intense cells moving in. a closer look at the radar into the north bay, it is really coming down. some of the heavy rain moving through san rafael with rainfall rates close to an inch per hour, heading towards napa and sonoma, heavy rain moving in there at about a .25 inch. from antioch towards concord, very low visibility as the rain

continues to pour. richmond, .3 per hour. we've seen rain a lot higher towards sauce letta, closer to .6 an inch per hour. we will see this adding on to the rainfall totals. when it comes down this fast and heavy, it creates isolated street flooding. it doesn't run off as easily, especially when the leaves blork the storm drains. watch out for the puddles. in oakland coming down at about .75 inch per hour and the same as you go down into the peninsula. in the south bay we're also seeing some of this rain that's not as intense. there are some breaks as well from morgan hill to gilroy, more of a light rain. it's starting to move into the santa cruz mountains. that's where the really heavy rain will start to move in. we're seeing it also moving into the coast and the peninsula. half moon bay, bright red on the radar. as we go hour-by-hour, this shows what the radar could look like as we go through the rest of the day.

and still some very heavy rain moving into the east baby 6:00 or 7:00 in the morning. into the south bay at that time as many people get up, get out there on the roadways and there will be, once again, a few breaks. it's not as heavy at 8:30 in the morning. if you can try to time when to get on the roadways, maybe a little bit later this morning as we will have some more scattered showers and not this widespread intense rain. later on this evening, another round of rain moving in. that's when we could have the lightning moving through as the cold air and that cold front rolls in right behind it. the wind forecast shows winds won't be really that strong. we're not expecting widespread damaging winds, but the sustained winds at about 10 to 15 miles an hour. heading through the sierra, the possibility of at least a foot of snow for many spots and it may be a little higher for some of those higher peeks and elevations. going through the forecast this weekend, going to lake tahoe, the snow will be ending

tomorrow. lows dropping down into the teens and heading from here to monterey, it will be rainy today and clearing the rest of the weekend. it is really looking much better in time for the holiday for saturday and sunday for the bay area as well. it will be much cooler. we'll be tracking the potential of lowell investigation snow from mt. hamilton, also from the summit to highway 17. we'll have more details on that. mike is tracking a car fire to report. >> kari, we're talking about all that water. yet i'm talking about a car fire. let me show you here along the coast, blue kicking in all along highway 1. that will be an issue. ponding likely. kari is showing you it's really hitting the north bay. south of the dumbarton bridge getting a break. our team is out there showing us what the conditions are like for folks around the bay. this is where the car fire is. just a little stringal over here south of antioch. this is at byron highway and

bruns road. no complications. the car was on fire, but no injuries reported. back over towards the bay bridge, that's where we see more rain coming from the north bay. it will hit the richmond-san rafael bridge, and across the bay bridge as well. another crash reported somewhere about downtown. it sounds like that car is off the roadway. showing soupy conditions right by the coliseum. that rain kicking up all the way toward the san mateo bridge. in the north bay, despite rain coming through, no problem for speeds. be careful. slow it down if you need to. that's what they'll do for b.a.r.t., if there's an issue with weather, they'll slow the trains down. 4:54. a slam dunk of a different sort, the warriors celebrate a new member of the team. we'll introduce you next. our app is the best way to
