as icy as it feels. if you live near the santa cruz mountains, you probably got a little bit of the icy roads. 19 degrees out there right now. so if you're spending your christmas eve or christmas day in a cabin, you're going to be waking up to a nice white christmas day. right now all across the bay area, the 30s for the north bay, san francisco, half moon bay, in the 40s, and today's highs, well, they're not going to be much warmer than that. future cast right now showing those scattered showers, a very slight possibility, though, have no fear, folks, it looks like we have in for a nice dry christmas eve but i will have a look ahead at what exactly you can expect tonight as well as christmas day thank you very much, vn vianey. if you're heading up to the sierra this weekend, you're being urged to drive very carefully. up to 2 feet of new snow is expected to fall at the summit level last night. drivers could find snowy

skateboard. that man was later arrested. while chon is back home, his recovery is just beginning. doctors say he will need ongoing rehab. they are, though, optimistic he will continue to bhak progress. well, everyone bears some responsibility. that's what the parents of a victim of the oakland warehouse fire contend in a lawsuit filed on friday. the parents of michela gregory, who died in her boyfriend's arms, say they want justice for their daughter and the others who were killed in that fire. >> she just loved life. and she's never coming home. we'll never see her again. >> it is just reprehensible, gross negligence, and in the highest degree to have this happen. >> alexander is also representing griffin madden, who died in the fire. the owner of the warehouse, the music promoters who put on the show, and the building's leaseholder are all named in that lawsuit. a deadly crash led to a chaotic commute for cal train passengers yesterday. it happened at the height of the friday night commute in palo alto at charleston road, south of the california avenue

station. a train hit a car on the tracks. one person inside died. the investigation is ongoing. investigators say the driver may have intentionally stopped his car on the tracks. a bizarre outbirs on a flight to sfo has a bay area native facing serious charges. police say jonah snow bit a flight attendant's ear wednesday. flight attendants had confronted snow for smoking a cigarette and drinking alcohol in his seat. the federal complaint says before boarding, snow and his girlfriend agreed not to drink alcohol because they were already drunk from previous flight. well, movie star royalty and "star wars" icon carrie fisher remains in the hospital this morning after having a heart attack on a plane bound for california. her fans and costars are sending thoughts and prayers from around the world. carrie fisher's heart attack pfs when i was thinking about the movie, i saw the news about it. >> i hope she recovers. >> reporter: the 60-year-old fisher went into cardiac arrest as her plane from london to l.a. was on descent. >> we have some passengers, nurses, assisting the passenger. we have an unresponsive passenger. >> reporter: the nurses helping fisher say she was unresponsive for 15 minutes. she was rushed to the uc la medical center. >> you're a great helptous. >> reporter: she has more than 90 credits in television and film but best known for her role as princess leia in the "star wars" saga. in 2010, she talked to nbc bay area while on tour at the berkeley rep, performing her on stage autobiography, "wishful drinking" and says the leia role followed her everywhere. >> it is not going to go away. you can buy, like, cleans and sprays. i am princess leia. deal with it. >> reporter: near the yoda statue, even small fans paying

==scott/cu== welcome back. it is 7:09. you're looking at a san jose sunrise looking up at the mountains on this christmas eve day. good morning. two east bay brothers are back on the job this weekend after they took down an armed robber. it was a dramatic encounter all caught on tape. >> reporter: what looks like the beginning of a successful robbery for the gunman quickly turns into an unexpected takedown. >> are people applauding you? are they, like, saying, wow, way to go? >> yes. >> reporter: amit and his brother were on the job tuesday at hayward's royal market when a 15-year-old walked in, pointed a gun at the clerk's head, and demanded cash. a shot hit one of the clerks in the leg. the other suffered major damage to his hand. >> would you do the same thing

the oakland coliseum. today the raiders host the indianapolis colts. good saturday morning. we take a live look outside at the oakland coliseum. today, your playoff bound oakland raiders host the indianapolis colts right there. game time for kickoff, by the way, will be at 1:05. to the news. a road closed by a water main in san francisco is back open this morning. it happened yesterday around 10:00 in the dog patch neighborhood near evans avenue and rinken street.

crews repaired the main and restored service but evans avenue was closed until late last night for paving. firefighters say it most likely broke from old age. from california to arizona, uber's fleet of self-driving cars arrived in phoenix just days after they were pulled from san francisco streets. the dmv banned the cars from california roads because of safety issues. yesterday, arizona's governor touted the state's business friendly environment and had a special message for uber. >> california may not want you. we want you to know that arizona does want uber. we are a state that is open for business. we are a state that welcomes business and new people and technology. >> i can see the tech battle escalating from here. uber, by the way, has not yet announced the date when those cars will hit the roads in arizona. if you need a last-minute gift for the "star wars" fan in your life, we found the drones you're looking for. drones that fight in the air, and they're now at a store near

each. maybe find a career at the same time. >> and you can do that indoors or outdoors, and if you're doing it outdoors, it's going to be cold, vianey arana. >> i'm always scared to fly those things. maybe it's fine. but yes, it is very cold, and if you're just now waking up, may want to bundle up because it's going to feel like christmas around here. look at the south bay, 39 degrees, peninsula looking beautiful in that sunrise 48 degrees at tri-valley, also into the 30s and the east bay of san francisco, north bay also seeing those equally beautiful, gorgeous skies. now we are expecting to warm up just a bit, though. let's go ahead and take a look at future cast. we did see that storm system that came in yesterday, all throughout the day we saw foggy road conditions and right now, it's looking like those scattered showers are sitting off to the coast. we may see the possibility of a few of those moving in

throughout the early morning hours but pushing forward ahead to about 10:30, we're going to see those clearer skies and we're going to see for the most part nice dry conditions through your saturday evening. look at this, by about 12:30, we dry out completely and that is snow in the mountains. we're talking sierra snow and if you're not up there, you have plans to head up to the snowy areas, you may want to take some extra time and be extra careful on the roads because christmas day, also expecting to see more snow and expecting to see another round of nice clear sunny conditions. now, we were tracking the possibility of seeing a few scattered showers into late christmas eve but it looks like storm is going to miss us, those residual areas of moisture left over actually purked to the side so those chances have increased even less. now looking across the nation, if you have family members either flying in or flying out, they're seeing a much different picture, especially on the east coast. this is that residual moisture, the possibility of a few scattered showers, 30s. but take a look at the east coast. lots of snow and what that means, yeah, there could be some

good flight delays out there. so you may want to check in to your locate websites to see how the road conditions are if you plan on driving tonight, today's highs will remain into the 40s and 50s. at least for the bay area california area, i know it's nothing compared to the east coast where they're really seeing some winter kemps. here's a live look at lake tahoe and that's snow. thanks to this resij m moisture, we're seeing a winter weather advisory that will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight so if you're traveling tonight, about 4 inches of rain -- rather snow, about 4 inches of snow, out near lake tahoe, also seeing a couple more inches of snow throughout the evening. that snow does of course stick around but we're expecting the majority of that snowfall to fall into tonight and tomorrow. now, let's climb out your christmas eve because if you have plans to be outdoors,

either getting those last minute shopping trips or maybe with family from out of town, those temperatures trends are going to remain in the 40s, mostly clear skies as we head into about 4:00 or 5:00 and if you're heading up to walnut creek, here's what the ice rink and the shopping is going to look like for you. 50s into the evening afternoon hours. as you head into later portions of the day, though, if you're not already in the car, it's going to be chilly out there. your one last chance before actual christmas day, very nice out there in christmas in the park, 40s into the early morning hours as you head into the lunch hour, at 1:00 or 2:00, we're talking 50s and by 5:00, drop right back down to the 40s so a nice christmas touch in the forecast. now your next three-day travel plans, if you're heading to tahoe or monitanhattan monterre eve in the bay is going to be 40s and 50s, christmas day even better. nice clear conditions. here's a quick look at your day

not what they do for a living. welcome back. judge people by who they are, not what they do for a living. it's a good reminder for us and a lesson that students at a south bay high school have been taught not by a teacher but by a cu custodian. >> reporter: jesse ramirez, as you'll hear in a moment, does not have fond memories of high school or of any of his schooling, really chlgts it's why he says he's so glad he has a second chance to make that not the case for other kids. traveling the halls of del mar high school with jesse ramirez feels less like hanging out with a custodian. >> hello, sara. >> reporter: and more like riding shotgun with the most popular kid in school. >> everyone knows him by name if

you see him. >> reporter: it is about as far from jesse's actual high school experience as possible. >> tough times. growing up, it was difficult for me to learn, to retain things. eventually, i would just shy away from everyone because it got to a point where it was embarrassing for me. >> reporter: it was so tough, jesse admits, he even worried about taking the janitor's job here five years ago. worried that the kids might look down on him. but jesse needed the work. it turned out, he says, to be the best decision he ever made. >> working here has -- has, like, really changed my life, has really changed my life. >> reporter: that's because jesse made it a point, this time around, to be the kind of adult for kids at school that he wishes had been there for him. >> seeing a student, you know,

being by himself, you know, being a loner in the corner, reminds me, you know, just of what i went through in high school. so kind of like reached out and just, you know, kind of lent me my ears and my voice to this person and it kind of grew. >> reporter: the students seek out jesse all the time for impromptu counseling sessions on campus, some lasting more than an hour. >> totally. i know. he does that for kids. it's insane. >> there's a lot of people who are going to take the mike. >> reporter: but even with how much he's grown, jesse still says he's pretty shy. >> can we have jesse come to the floor? >> reporter: and more than a little nervous when he was surprised in front of the whole school at their winter wishes rally. both students and staff had singled out jesse for all he does and wished something nice be done for him. >> and last but not least, we got you four football tickets to

(adlib) good morning once again. coming up on 7:29 back at "today in the bay" on december 24. happy christmas eve, and you are looking live out at downtown san jose and downtown ice, which is quiet now, but i imagine will be very, very busy over the weekend. thanks for joining us. i'm scott budman along with vianey arana with a look at your forecast on this cold weekend. >> yeah, cold weekend. and if you don't have to do any last minute shopping and you can just go and enjoy, i might head down to the ice skating rink. i think that might be fun, especially with some gloves and mittens. belvedere. look at how gorgeous this shot is, 36 degrees right now and a lot of areas are seeing 30s and 40s and we will be warming up but just a tad bit. we're going to be climbing into the 40s for the most part. right now, though, the north bay down to the south bay seeing those lower 30s, upper 30s, santa cruz mountains at act 35 degrees so they're definitely feeling the chill down there and seeing wind and some gusty

smashed computers. police say andrew faulkner broke in and vandalized the school. a judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation for faulkner, who is scheduled to reappear in court in february. california governor jerry brown is getting into the holiday spirit and showing mercy for some people who have been convicted. yesterday, he reduced the sentence of a man who was part of a gang shooting where a woman almost -- where a woman lost an eye almost 20 years ago. the governor also pardoned more than 100 others. he traditionally grants leniencies around major christian holidays. most of these pardons are given to people convicted over a decade ago for nonviolent crimes. president-elect donald trump took his threat to expand the country's nuclear arsenal to a new level. in a statement to msnbc, mr. trump said, let it be an arms race, we will outmatch them at every pass. that statement comes just one day after mr. trump tweeted, the u.s. must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world

comes to its senses regarding nukes. the tweet contradicts a four decades old u.s. policy when ronald reagan called for a reduction of nuclear weapons. president obama proposed modernizing the u.s. nuclear arsenal but not expanding it. >> this is no way to run a country. every word matters. strengthen the nuclear arsenal? fine. expand it? everyone's harping on that word, whether donald trump meant it or not, he is changing u.s. policy. >> trump's new press secretary tried to clarify the president-elect's remarks, saying his statement is only meant as a warning to other nations, not to undermine u.s. sovereignty. mr. trump also released a week-old letter from russian president vladimir putin. it reads, dear mr. trump, please accept my warmest christmas and new year's greetings. president putin goes on to say he would like to two countries to cooperate together. trump called the letter very nice and said he hopes both sides live up to those thoughts. it is a break from the obama

i hope your christmas tree is already lit, because the weather is going to be absolutely perfect to celebrate christmas eve. here's a look right now at our weather, underground cameras in belvedere at 36 degrees and it's chilly all across the bay area, we're talking 30s and 40s. look at the north bay, 30 degrees in santa rosa, napa 32

along half moon bay and san francisco and if we take it down to the south bay, we're at 39 degrees so waking up to a nice, cool start. now, today's highs are going to remain into those 40s for the most part, we're talking a high of about 49 degrees in san francisco. 47 for santa rosa. down to los gatos and san jose, the microclimates are looking very similar because we aren't tracking any major rainfall for today. future cast, you're seeing a combination of green and white on this map. the green that you see right here is that residual, leftover moisture that could be bringing the possibility of a very few light scattered showers to areas like the santa cruz mountains and also the north bay. and of course over to my left, you see snow in the forecast and that's because we are expecting anywhere between 2 to 4 feet of know in the sierra mountains. pushing ahead to about 1:00, all of that rain disappears and we start seeing nice clear conditions also out on the roads as you head into sunday, if you're making an early morning

san jose or san francisco but the mountains are going to get a good chance for it. winter weather advisory in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight so with that brings the concern of travel issues so remember to please take extra time. that low visibility could cause some concern. about 2 to 4 feet of snow is expected to fall this weekend as we head into sunday, though. no more snowfall but that snow is expected to stick around through your christmas day forecast. now let's go ahead and take a look over the next three days at exactly what we can expect out near lake tahoe, a little gusty tonight. if you're hitting the road, take extra pretaucaution, about 29 degrees, overnight lows, 9 degrees, 10 degrees, that snowfall is expected to end but you'll wake up to a beautiful blanket of snow. as you head into monday, little bit cloudy, 37 degrees and if you're heading to monterrey, could be seeing rain tonight and also expecting to see some of that rain carry over into sunday morning's forecast but by sunday evening and monday and tuesday,

good morning. it is 7:50. you're looking live on a saturday morning out at our golden gate bridge cam, a beautiful saturday morning as vianey has been talking about. back to the news, though. imbrags has been a topic of a lot of debate lately and the bay area destination once played a key role in that debate. "today in the bay" visits angel island and how an old building is getting a second life to help tell that story. >> reporte >> at angel island, people say the walls speak. >> reporter: though it's surrounded by millions of people, angel island is one of the san francisco bay's most tranquil places. but the peaceful scenery belies its role in early 1900s history when the island served as a purgatory for 1 million immigrants. >> you'd come over on these hopes and dreams and get here

and the immigration station is your first experience. >> reporter: old restored barracks tell the stories of immigrants from some 80 countries, including japan, china, and germany, who were detained in the island's immigration station between 1910 and 1940. >> whereas ellis island was built largely to welcome immigrants to america, angel island was built as a place to exclude people. >> reporter: among the 120 decaying buildings left on the island, its original hospital was nearly a ghost. >> there was so much water leaking in through the back of the building, it was pretty much like a river running through the building. didn't have much time left on it before we were able to intervene. >> reporter: but like the dreams of those who ended up on the island, the building is getting a new life. >> this is very exciting for us. >> reporter: catherine of the angel island immigration station foundation -- >> never been open to the public. >> reporter: -- is working with state parks in an effort to restore the hospital as a living museum. >> this is where they actually did surgery. this was the women's ward.

we hope that it will look much the same as it did when the hospital opened. >> reporter: the building's windows boast very unhospital-like views. >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: making the perfect setting for a reflection room. >> just kind of sit and reflect. historically, this was the kitchen area of the hospital. >> reporter: the work will also restore some of the building's less celebrated features. >> there were two entrances in the hospital, one for sagss and one for non-asians and we've restored it to the two entrances as it was originally built. >> reporter: there are a few modern updates. >> it's amazing to see the restoration. . there were people who died in the hospitals. there were people who were born in the hospital. >> reporter: but the stories told by the restored building will go beyond the sick and the infirmed. >> the hospital's really going to give us a chance to really explore bigger themes of immigration to the u.s. >> and ourselves as an immigrant nation and that tension continues today. >> reporter: the hospital's scheduled to open to visitors in early 2018, and it may hold the

distinction as the only hospital we will look forward to visiting. joe rosato jr., nbc bay area news. >> there's some possible new house if anything for san jose state students and faculty. university leaders are eyeing a site near one of the busiest pedestrian walkways in downtown san jose. you may remember back in september, the camera 12 theater downtown closed its doors. that's where university leaders are now looking as the home of their new housing project. they say they would need approval from its board before making an offer for the space. early housing proposals suggest the building will be 20 stories high and have more than 500 apartments. well, it's a new friend among teens. hidesing out overnight in popular stores and then posting videos of their adventures online. they call it the sleepover challenge. the craze appears to have started with these two belgian teens. this summer, they entered an ikea before it closed, hid from security, then spent the night with their cameras rolling. they've inspired copy cats all
