more at the valley fair more, the macy's store in santa clara. big deals expecting huge crowds for both sales. all those after christmas returns. cnbc retail reporter courtney reagan says one in ten gifts will likely be returned, but some stores don't allow returns if bought online. >> as much as 30% to 40% of things bought online can be returned. >> some deals here. three most important tips for holiday returns from the national retail federation. bring your receipt if you have a receipt. that way you can get what you paid for the item and not the sale price that is probably going to be marked on the item after christmas. also, there are varying time limits for returns. different time periods for when you can return things, whether it be one month, et cetera.

sunday schedule. investigators believe drunk driving was involved in a deadly crash in the south bay. the suspected drunk driver was killed as well as a 14-year-old boy who was in another car with his parents. police responded to the crash just after midnight sunday on capital expressway in san jose. officers say a woman drove over the center median and crashed head-on into another car. the teen in that car was killed. his parents are expected to survive the crash. they mark the 49th and 50th tragic deaths. investigators are looking for a the shooer who opened fire outside a san francisco night club early christmas morning on 4th street. we brought you the story yesterday. two people were injured as a result of that shooting. it happened early christmas morning outside the grand night club. only blocks away from at&t park. police say they found two men on the sidewalk who had been shot.

according to the website, there was a christmas eve event going on at that time. >> high speeds could be to blamed for a deadly accident that happened in sonoma county. a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed after he was broad sided by a pick-up truck. it happened 10:00 saturday night on petaluma hill road. the two people in the truck weren't injured. chp investigators are looking into what happened. >> at this point we are investigating the speed of the motorcyclist being a factor in the collision and whether alcohol was a factor. >> chp officers shut down parts of the road for three hours during their investigation. the new year is a week away. with 2017 comes the new parking crackdown at b.a.r.t. stations. b.a.r.t. is increasing fines for illegal parking. pete suratos joins us with how much it will cost you. >> good morning. it's never a good idea to

illegally park anywhere let alone at b.a.r.t. folks are probably off for the holiday today. we are here. if you illegally parked here, if you violate it, you're subject to citation. starting the new year if you park in the permitted lot that could double. we'll tell you what these fines will be. if you park illegally in a daily spot, it will jump from $35 to $55. if you're in a permanent spot, that price is going to jump from $45 to $75. nearly doubling. if you're using a fake permit, it will be $150. if you get five or more fines in a calendar year, you have an additional fee of $100 if there's 10 or more, it will jump up to $150. they are making it more costly for riders who deal with the fines instead of paying tolls and parking for b.a.r.t. stops in the san francisco area b.a.r.t. approved these fines back in february.

declared for a town in southeast michigan after a massive sinkhole opened up two. people in moat row detroit were forced to evacuate after the sinkhole caused one home to partially collapse. investigators say it began forming on friday night. they believe it started because of a sewer failure 60 feet below the damaged home. 5:16. a distraught man threatening police was shot and killed by officers in florida. sheriff's deputies say the 61-year-old man had called 911 and threatened to shoot himself, others and police. investigators say that man was found inside an rv behind a family home where he lived after a standoff, deputies say the suspect came out with a hand gun and would not put it down prompting police officers to open fire. ice and snow wreaking havoc in the midwest during this holiday weekend. in eastern iowa, it was a wet and soggy christmas as heavy rains and high winds chilled the

air and soaked the roads. a blizzard in south dakota where many areas saw up to eight inches of snow. winds reportedly gusted up to 60 miles per hour causing snow drifts and zero visibility onç the roads. >> zero visibility, it is zero degrees in south lake tahoe. >> no way. >> yes. it is cold. >> a lot of fresh snow. >> a lot of our friends spending the christmas holiday in the sierra and that's what they are waking up to. >> it's cold here, too. not that cold but it's all clear. we are kedealing with frost and freezing conditions. the heater's on. we have cool air. right now all across the bay area, it is just above freezing in spots. in the tri-valley, 34. 36 in the peninsula and 35 in

the south bay, low 40s for san francisco in the east bay and the north bay now 29 degrees. it will be nice and warm later today. still cooler than average, but we'll still see those highs making it into the mid 50s. 54 in san francisco. all across the region, it is mostly dry. showers just off the coast of l.a. that will not affect us. most of the day in southern california also dry. looking at temperature trend for livermore, only 34 there now. it will be a little bit milder today. we see those highs reaching into the mid 50s. it will be a nice one with a light wind. we start to see the winds picking up as we go through the day in some spots. along the coastline. half moon bay will stay breezy with winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour. as we go through the week, it will be all dry as our temperatures warm up, looking at a nice temperature trend into the mid 60s for the inland area.

those winds rushing onshore. that keeps us with moderating temperatures. then through the end of the week and start of the new year, there will be a chance of showers. we will keep it all dry until then. looking at the forecast for san francisco reaching into the mid 50s and some low 60s for wednesday and thursday. for the weekend, expect a high of 55 and 51 for new year's day. and for the inland areas, highs in the low 60s out there, up to 64 on thursday. now as we get a look at what's happening on the roadways, just watching all green sensors across the bay area. wanted to zoom in on one area southbound on highway 84. looks like it's slowing up there. keep in mind you may need to allow extra travel time as you head out. getting a look at some of our cameras, as well. we see that across the san mateo bridge it is looking good, flowing smoothly as you head across the bridges as well.

the brain processes sound. use being electrode sensors, they monitored different kids with different sounds. children with concussions had a 35% smaller brain response to that pitch specifically than those who did not have concussions. this test correctly identified 90% of children who suffered a concussion. a new study finds a strong link between sleep patterns and recovery for patients with traumatic brain injuries exist. they followed people hospitalized with a moderate to severe brain injury, thinking abilities and sleep problems improved at the same time. more studies are needed to figure out why sleep and brain recovery are intertwined. low-risk prostate cancer patients have a treatment option that kills tumors without removing the prostate. they inject a light-since testify drug into the blood stream. when activated by laser, it

drunk caused a deadly collision in the south bay taking her own life and the life of a 14-year-old boy traveling in a car with his parents. police responded to the crash on capital expressway. officers say that's where the woman drove over the center median and crashed head-on into the car carrying the parents. the parents were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. these are the 49th and 509 traffic-related fatalities in san jose this year. there were 60 last year. search continues for a shooter who opened fire outside a san francisco night club early christmas morning. the shooting happened early sunday morning outside the grand night club. not far away from at&t park. they found two men on the sidewalk when they arrive, both suffering from gun shot wounds. according to the website there was a christmas eve event at the

debbie reynolds took to social media saying her daughter is in stable condition after suffering a heart attack on friday. the 60-year-old fisher had the heart attack on a flight from london to l.a. and was rushed to the hospital after landing. reynolds says she will keep fans posted throughout the recovery process and thanked fans and friends for their support. loved ones are remembering the victims of the russian military plane that crashed over the weekend. a memorial was held at the airport in sochi earlier this morning. all 84 passengers and eight crew members on the russian military plane are believed to have died when it crashed in the black sea shortly after taking off from sochi. the passengers included dozens of singers in russia's world famous military choir. rescue teams are searching the black sea. russian officials announced pilot error or a technical issue, not terrorism, is likely the cause of the crash. new details on the nephew of
