lot of exciting stuff happening. >> yes. >> certainly tonight and you want to know what the weather's going to be like. >> you definitely do, especially if you're going to be outside hanging out for any ball drops, fireworks, any of that good stuff. right now, we are in the 40s. now i do want to let you know that we will be trending slightly cooler for today which means those highs will only be climbing into the 50s and we are expecting to see a chance of a few scattered showers. you see san francisco's seeing a little bit of that, maybe hazy sky, but we should be clearing out from the rain at least into the early afternoon and here's how we're looking compared to the rest of the nation. if you still haven't flown out to new york, i think it might be a little bit late but if you have any plans to head out near any of these other locations, really, look at that. 31 degrees in a lot of the areas we're really trending 30s in san jose on the warmer side at 41. this was a much different picture yesterday. we were seeing the 30s. here's a quick look right now at today's highs, in the 50s across the bay area and here's a quick check of that storm system that we've been tracking. this is expected to come in from

the north and expected to bring a lot of rain to not just the l.a. area but a few scattered showers also for the bay area. but have no fear, those scattered showers, like i said, should be making an exit by the midafternoon. >> fantastic. so, if you're in for the fireworks, or going out for the fireworks, midnight in san francisco. >> bundle up. >> things should be good. than thanks, vianey. of course, in some parts of the world, it already is 2017. new zealand kicked off the new year's celebrations around the world, ushering in 2017 with a laser light show over auckland sky tower at midnight. the city is home to 1.5 million people. people all over the bay area are preparing to say good-bye to 2016, bringing in the new year is big business. tens of thousands of people are expected to head to san francisco where the finishing touches are underway. piles and barricades are being put into place along the embarcadero. police say there will be plenty of officers in uniform. there will also be a large

undercover presence. bars and restaurants will be packed full of revellers and the confetti will be flying as people line up to watch the midnight fireworks display, including at the hotel vitali. >> you literally have front row seats. probably one of the better venues in the entire city. >> if you're out in a large area where there's a lot of people, i guarantee you you're going to see a patrol officer out there in uniform. >> police are urging party goers to be responsible. these to designate a driver or take public transportation. now, in order to keep people from drinking and drivering, many bay area transit agencies are running special schedules on new year's eve. samtrans and ac transit are offering free service on all their bus lines from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. new year's morning. caltrain rides will also be free after 8:00 p.m. those rides will end around 2:00 a.m. on sunday. b.a.r.t. rides aren't free new year's eve night but there will be running trains on the

special schedule from 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. b.a.r.t. will also have extra trains standing by in san francisco to run after the fireworks show on the embarcadero. and of course, new york city times square is where thousands will gather. you're looking live right now at preparations. you can watch the times square ball drop right here on nbc bay area. carson daly is hosting our new year's eve party and jennifer lopez, alicia keys, and blake shelton are performing. the show tarstarts at 11:30 tonight. now to the news, first, the allegations that russian hackers tried to influence the presidential election. now, troubling evidence they may be trying to tamper with american power companies. "today in the bay's" rick boone is tracking the developments. >> reporter: russian revelation. sources tell nbc news russian hackers gained access to the u.s. electrical grid in vermont. burlington electric says mall ware was found on the one of its

computers but noted the device was not connected to the grid. vermont's governor outraged on this hacking, saying this episode should highlight the urgent need for our federal government to vigorously pursue and put an end to this sort of russian medaling. >> it's not human, frankly. not human. >> reporter: the vermont discovery comes just hours after four members of the san francisco russian consulate were given 72 hours to get out of the u.s. >> the whole world is watching the way this country behaves, and right now, you've got an outgoing administration going one direction, an incoming administration going the other direction and the rest of the world is saying, what can we expect? >> reporter: the white house calls them intelligent officials but the russian consul general says one of the four is the cook who needs to pack up his wife and 2-year-old child. in a facebook post, the consulate claims those being evicted will have to drive to los angeles to catch a flight back to russia, noting they'll have to celebrate the new year in the sky.

vulnerabilities. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the investigations tab or search the key words, substation security. it's an area where crime is almost unheard of. police in the quiet community on pleasanton are on the lookout for a man who reportedly grabbed a woman walking alone on the street. it happened early yesterday morning in the middle of downtown. a 43-year-old woman told police she was leaving a restaurant just after midnight when a man yelled something from his car at her. he made a u turn, got out of his car and then attacked her. >> she described him as a hispanic male in his 35 to 40 years old. this was about 5'10" or 6', between 200 and 230 pounds. in the downtown area, there's lots of businesses with surveillance cameras so we're hoping that possibly one of those cameras might provide some leads for us. >> she managed to break free and she wasn't hurt. the attacker, as you heard described, a hispanic male, 35

to 40 years old. clean shaven and muscular. police are hoping to gather clues from surveillance cameras in the downtown area. stuck on an amusement park ride for hours, 20 people in a ride operated were trapped in the sky cabin ride at knotsberry farm in southern california. the ride got stuck more than 100 feet in the air, too high for ladders to reach. firefighters had to resort to plan b, lowering each passenger down to the ground. a parent who had kids on the ride took it all in stride. >> one heck of a tale to tell when they get back to school. >> only thing i tell my kids, don't get scared or fear about anything. >> park employees believe a main break was activated and could not be released. the sky cabin is an enclosed ride that slowly rotates to provide a panoramic view similar to the space needle in seattle.

welcome back to the broadcast, 7:14 outside right now, live look at the golden gate bridge. going to be a fun night to be in san francisco this evening, fireworks going off at midnight. a puppy is back safe with its owner after being stolen during a violent robbery in san jose. take a look. police say the owner of this alaskan malamute posted an ad on craigslist last week trying to sell the pup to a good home. however, the two men who responded beat the owner and stole cash and the puppy from the home. police tracked down the smts on sunday. they found the puppy and arrested the men. fresh local crab might be hard to come by for a while. last year, high levels of demoic acid cut the crabbing season short. this year, a price war along the north coast will put a stop to crab fishing from half moon bay

all the way to canada. "today in the bay's" michelle roberts was in half moon bay where fishermen went on strike at midnight. >> i feel fortunate that we're getting some fresh crab. >> reporter: paul was able to snag some of the last crab of 2016 at pillar point harbor in half moon bay. >> this is coming right off the boat. can't get any fresher than that. >> reporter: the crab for sale signs will be taken down while the frisherman here wait for the green light from fellow fishermen up north of i definitely will stand with my fellow fisherman. >> reporter: until all california crabbers are earning $3, toney and every other crab fisherman in half moon bay and san francisco will strike. >> it's not right. >> reporter: the half moon bay seafood marketing association has voted to stand in solidarity with the crab fishing strike along the north coast. fishermen between bodega bay and canada are only making $2.75 per pound. which many fishermen say isn't enough to cover the cost and

risk associated with crab fishing. >> without the crab season, there is nobody out here. >> reporter: local restaurant owners are stocking up on as much crab as they can get before the strike officially begins at midnight. >> i need it to keep going. i mean, you know, we got to have it. it helps the restaurant. it helps the two restaurants. it helps the ice cream shop. you know, it's just what brings people into this harbor. >> reporter: michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. >> joining me now, vianey arana. vianey, you said you just had a dungeness crab cake, got in under the wire. >> and it was delicious. >> i'm sure it was. vianey's here to tell us about our weekend forecast. >> yeah, we are tracking some spotty showers. you may have noticed that the skies are starting to look a little darker out there and that's because there is actively a storm system that is going to be tracking down from the north. with trending south, peninsula right now 48, south bay 41 and out henear the tri-valley, also seeing those 40s. as we make our way to san francisco, also expecting to see

the 40s. today's highs will be slightly cooler, topping outs into the 50s which means if you are heading out for any new year's eve celebrations tonight, you may still want to bundle up. get a quick check of how we are expecting to see our microclimate highs for today. half moon bay 48 degrees, topped out another h at 62 degrees yesterday but today, shouldn't be climbing past 56. as far as rain chances, let's take a quick look at how the radar is looking right now. socal has been seeing some much needed rain and that storm system that is going to be pushing in from the north is still bringing some showers down near that area. also near san diego as well and they are expected to keep that rain through tonight into saturday, carrying over into sunday. so, they're definitely in for about three days of rain. as far as the bay area goes, here it is. we're seeing that spotty showers. now, although this is coming down from the north, it is trending south. so, that means areas like san

francisco, san jose, could be seeing some spotty showers over the next couple of hours and of course areas near sacramento already seeing some rain out near that area but if you're wondering if this is going to continue into the overnight hours, let's take a look at your hour by hour outlook. now, by sunday night, we should be clearing out, which means tonight by midnight, no rain in sight. however, we are tracking a second storm system that is expected to bring a better chance for rain across the bay area as early as monday. for tonight, though, cool temperatures in the highs of -- in the 50s and as we head into the night, it will be in those 40s. here's a quick glance right now at what we're tracking. monday by about 7:00, you start seeing that fog roll in. and you start seeing those showers if you fast forward to tuesday, wednesday, and thursday, there is a good chance that that rain will carry over. let's quickly plan out your day planner for your new year's eve celebrations chls by 10:00 a.m., we are expecting to see some light rain. by 1:00, that rain should be clearing out, leaving behind

some cloud cover and by 4:00, we should be clearing, making way for a cool day across the bay area. by midnight, the night where we welcome 2017, we're expecting 40 degrees and some partly cloudy skies. new year's day for the first day of your 2017, expect a cold morning, chilly temperatures and by 8:00, we could see the possibility of some light rain thanks to the arrival of that second storm system. originally, we are expecting that second storm system to keep our temperatures very cold, overnight lows, but that has actually shifted. now we're expecting milder conditions with a better chance of seeing some rain as early as monday morning through tuesday, wednesday, and thursday as well. so the first week of 2017 as of now is looking like it may be a foggy one across the bay area. now, inland area is also expecting to see a high of about 54 degrees for today. first day of the new year, 53, and we will keep those 50s in the forecast through the end of 2017. i'll send things back to you. >> great, vianey. thank you very much. much more ahead on "today in the

microclimate forecast. >> yeah and we are starting to see those clouds start to roll in. i know it looks dark and gray and it looks like we should be seeing some few spotty showers but 41 degrees right now in the south bay, peninsula also in the 40s. these 40s will be climbing by a couple of degrees into the 50s. yesterday we managed into the 60s. today, this cold air mass coming down with that storm system is expected to keep us only in the 50s. let's get a quick glance right now. our highs will be in the 50s all the way from the north bay down to the south bay so the microclimates are going to be looking very similar. that storm system is bring ago lot of rain to l.a. and it is expected to bring if you have those spotty showers. now l.a. is expected to keep that rain that their forecast through today, tomorrow, and sunday but should clear out just in time for a rose parade. as far as we go, you see those little green plots right there, a little bit of that storm coverage should be coming in, but it's fast moving, which means they're going to be spotty showers throughout the early morning hours, should be clearing out very quickly, the majority of it is expected to

is over, because san francisco prosecutors said they will not retry the case. last week, san francisco's public defender released this body camera video of the arrest of michael smith and his partner at the embarcadero station. officers responding to a 911 armed robbery call confronted smith. he was not armed. officers say smith attacked them, but the couple disputes that, saying the police were aggressive. a jury acquitted smith of battery and deadlocked on three other misdemeanors. prosecutors say they will not pursue those charges. fire investigators think they know how an abandoned house in the south bay went up in flames. fires sparked around 2:00 yesterday afternoon at a house in san jose. across the street from the fire station close to the 280 and 87 interchange. the san jose fire department says they've been called to put out a fire at this home before because it is a popular spot for

squatters. more developments until the united states retaliation against russia. russian president vladimir putin is condemning the sanctions ordered by president obama. meanwhile, president-elect donald trump weighs in with a very friendly tweet about putin. nbc's jennifer johnson has the story. >> reporter: russian president vladimir putin has condemned a new round of u.s. sanctions, but won't expel american diplomats. after president obama ordered 35 russian diplomats out of the u.s. as punishment for meddling in the election. president-elect donald trump praised putin for not retaliating. in a flattering tweet that will likely raise eyebrows, great move on delay by v. putin. i always knew he was very smart. experts question why putin would retaliate since the hacking may have helped elect trump. >> he's doing a victory lap. he doesn't have to do tit for tat sanctions on us. >> reporter: mr. trump will be briefed by sejs leaders on russian hacking next week. putin is hoping trump will reverse president obama's orders but analysts say the president-elect needs to be

careful. >> donald trump is going to face this issue in about 21 days, it's got to be his government that they're now trying to hack. >> reporter: the senate armed services committee has called a session with top intelligence leaders next thursday to investigate the foreign cyber threat. democrats and even some republican lawmakers want stronger actions against russia, even if mr. trump does not. >> i don't think they're weak but i don't think they're ultimately going to be enough, and i'd like to see congress step up and oppose broader sanctions. >> reporter: russians were packing up to get out of two compounds in maryland and new york to beat a noon deadline. the 35 diplomats in washington, d.c., and san francisco have until sunday to leave. jennifer johnson, nbc news, washington. >> president obama is planning his next move. once his hawaii vacation is over and the president is back in washington, he'll meet with house and senate democrats. his staff has sent out invitations to a breakfast meeting on wednesday. there, they will strategize on how to prevent donald trump and

morning as we get ready for new year's eve tonight. we are expecting to warm up into those 50s but right now we are in the 40s in the south bay, 41 degrees, peninsula, 48, out near the tri-valley, also in the 40s and of course near the north bay, still seeing some chilly temperatures in the 30s. you may be seeing some early morning fog. that should clear out. we are still tracking a storm system that will be keeping those temperatures slightly mild for today. now, we are expecting to see a high of about 55 in san jose, slightly cooler than yesterday. a high of 63 in san jose for yesterday. san francisco topping out at about 53 degrees and if you are heading down to san francisco for the fireworks, what can you expect? well, we are tracking this first storm of two, that is expected to bring a chance of some scattered showers across the bay area. right now, though, this storm system that is moving from the north trending south is expected to bring a few scattered showers to the further southern counties of the bay area.

but out near l.a., they have been seeing rain and they are expected to keep rain in the forecast through new year's eve and new year's day as well. clearing out by monday, though, for us, here it is for the next couple of hours. you may notice some spotty showers out on the roads, may be beginning to see some near the san jose area so this could cause some concern for some slick roads so if you are going to be out within the next couple hours, this should be clearing out by about midafternoon into the evening hours as well. sacramento also see a lot of that heavy rain but let's look at your hour by hour outlook forecast. you may notice those spotty showers early on but look at this. by midnight tonight, the hour where we welcome 2017, all should be clear out and those spotty showers that are trending south will continue to push further down, making their way all the way down to l.a. as well. that's where they're expected to see the heaviest of the rainfall, leaving behind a few spotty clouds, some light partly cloud cover into the early morning hours as well. by new year's eve, as that sky begins to clear out, we welcome the year of 2017 with a little

bit more cloud cover and by sunday night, we see a second storm system. this second storm system also arriving from the north will bring cooler temperatures to the area. we are expecting to see widespread showers as we head into monday and this could carry over, once again, trending south into tuesday, wednesday, thursday as well. so we will be starting 2017 with nice clear skies before we head into monday where we see these foggy conditions and of course more widespread showers. now, originally, we were tracking chances of seeing freezing overnight lows. right now, it looks like we have a better chance for rain and mild temperatures for the upcoming week. here's a quick rundown of your new year's eve forecast. by about 1:00, those clouds should be clearing out, making way for a nice high of about 53 degrees for most parts of the bay area. by midnight, 40 degrees so even though we aren't tracking rain it's going to be a little chilly so you want to bundle up for those celebrations.

here's a look at your new year's day. sending positive viebz your way for the start of 2017. 50 degrees will also be in the forecast for tomorrow so those temperatures will be very similar to what you're going to be seeing today. now over the next seven days, a quick trend look as that storm system, second storm system makes its way in. we will expect to see rain for san francisco and inland but don't go anywhere. we do have more news coming up after the break. stay with us.
