this morning we are in a micro climate weather alert. widespread rain and chilly temperatures. our team is tracking a wet and windy commute this morning. what you need to know before heading out the door. today in the bay starts right now. very good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. >> i'm sam brock. another round of wet weather to kick off your workweek. yea. >> there you go. >> we're seeing snow on bay area peaks. right to carrie. >> we will see the rain all throughout the day and even tomorrow before we catch a break before the weekend.

we have seen good amounts of rain across the bay area. and wide coverage for all of us as you wake up and head out this morning. the streets are wet. still seeing pockets of heavy rain. right now the heaviest rain moving across parts of the th peninsula, fremont. rain off and on. pockets of heavy rain may cause standing water on the roadways. so that may cause you to have to slow down and allow extra time to get to work this morning. >> already more active on the roadways. there are people going to work this morning. yesterday was very sparsely populated. no major problems. the green highlighted all of the bay. confirming for us you will find wet roadways. more pond something. merit island, reports of

flooding. and 101 at 37, a spinout already this morning. a small accident around the berkeley pier. a live look out there. we don't see any flashing lights. it looks like they have cleared that getting away from the bridge. you see the super slippery residence. a good amount of traffic. we'll look at the north bay. san rafael, a smooth drive. you're just fine. a note from mass transit is, back on normal schedules. bart 5 or 10 minute delays but no major problems. rain mixed with plunging temperatures created a rare sight on the bay area. snow from the top of mount hamilton. it created slick roads leading to the top of that mountain. elsewhere, people we spoke to say they are enjoying the chilly start to 2017.

>> if it snowed here and it stuck to the ground, i'd be out playing in it. >> i'm vlad that is rain, snow, anything in the area. >> it wasn't just the bay area enjoying the dusting of snow. the sierra got dumped on. traffic on 80 was bumper to bumper most of yesterday. chains are still required. enjoy the snow, not so much the traffic. a live look at the golden gate bridge where a section of the median pairier is damaged which means fewer lanes will be able during rush hour. >> pete, this is the first time something like this has even happened. >> good morning to you. according to the golden gate bridge team, they said this is the first time this has happened. we'll show you what the traffic looks like. or the lack of traffic since the commute is looking so far so good. later today, it could affect the

morning commute. engineers will be hard at work on it this a.m. we know as far as the lanes go, only the three southbound and northbound lanes will be open. there won't be a shift to the southbound and northbound lane. it eases traffic coming into san francisco. they don't know how the median barrier was broken, but they will work on fixing it this morning. they say they will be working on it during the morning commute and hope to have it fixed sometime today. live near the golden gate bridge, pete suratos. the long-awaited trial for the murder of sierra lamar begins today. ant lynn garcia-torres is accused of murdering her.

her body has never been found. garcia-torres could face the death penalty if convicted. one of the main sources on of water is being cut off for two months. the closure the lost 60 days the. several bay area cities get their water from that reservoir. hetch hetchy is the primary source of water and connects to the bay. they will pull water from the peninsula to try to keep up demand. you might notice changes in the way your tap water tastes and smells. up next, keeping the rain

a smooth flow. more folks coming out of the altamonte pass. we don't have any major delays for you. delays at airports across the country. they are planning to get back to business after a really tough night. the lines at miami international just kept going on and on because of a computer outage at customs and border protection. it started yesterday afternoon and lasted several hours causing a backlog. passengers had no choice but to wait as they processed everything by hand. >> san jose international airport, some were delayed by as much as five hours. in miami, more than 30 international flights were

affected and two people passed out. >> drivers were reportedly involved some more accidents this year for the transit system. more more trains and buses ran on time. the latest annual mun i-report will be discussed later today. 6.6 for every 100,000 miles covered. on-time performance improved to just under 60%. 59% to be exact. in 2015, it was closer to 55%. 4:41. an annual event keeps growing. a consumer electronics show kicks off this week in los angeles. landon downing joining us to talk about what's hot this year. >> dublin as perhaps some of the traffic patterns start picking

worst into this. >> well rested. >> it was a great holiday weekend and happy new year. >> we'll work out later. >> it looks good as far as the weather forecast. rain in the bay area and snow in the sierra. we'll talk about that in a minute. a live look at san francisco. low clouds. rain. good see all of this rain moving through. we once again see is the snow moving through the sierra. heavier rain through parts of the peninsula and into the east bay. now, this is where the rain is heaviest right now. still in san jose. mostly dry, even though we had rain earlier this morning. redwood city, palo alto, extending to san francisco. just a steady downpour as i head out for the drive. from the north bay into san

rafael, heavy rain on the east bay. walnut creek in concord, you're seeing rain at this point. pretty much all of us are seeing steady rain except for the south bay. temperatures this morning much warmer than yesterday. the warm air surging in. also that surge of subtropical moisture boosting our rainfall just a little bit today. and it continues throughout the afternoon. by tomorrow, it still stays wet and snowy for the next 72 hours at least. and then heavy rain again this weekend. that will raise the threat of some flooding. we will talk about that. as we go through the next 24 hours, we see the heaviest rain shifting over the north bay. we will all get a dose of heavy rain. this is through the evening commute. we will see pockets of heavy rain this evening. a little bit of a break tomorrow.

then through the the day still light showers that will not let up. we are looking at a fairly well start to this new year. as we go into this weekend, another round of rain moving in. this will be quite heavy. much heavier rain saturday, sunday. with all of this rain on on a saturated ground, a threat of flooding. looking how much rain we will see. at least an inch to two inches for most of us. santa cruz, over two inches. check this out. at least five inches of rain for the mountains. three to four for the north bay. while we get a lot of rain here, look at what's happening in the sierra. up to 38 inches of snow at south lake tahoe and next week. we could be talking several feet of snow. in san francisco, looking at

cool temperatures the next few days. friday a high of 49 degrees. it looks milder this weekend. we'll get waves of warm and cool air. a lot of rain in that forecast for the week general. something we'll have to really keep an eye on especially with the concern of flooding. now some of the schools babbling in session. my son going back. >> some have going back, others have another week of vacation. it is still early to see this affect the volume of traffic. it does mean more commuters back in the bay area. east bay times, no major delays for the freeways. parsley populated right now. san ma tea bridge. soupy, sloppy conditions. water kicking up off the roadway. no wind advisory.

bay bridge toll plaza, plan on some delay. because we haven't seen the backup since last week. but things are starting to build a bit over here. of course watching transit systems for any problems. so far no bad news. >> let's hope it stays that way. sadly, we know the name of the teenager killed in the car crash in santa rosa saturday night. 18-year-old makayla was in the passenger seat. the driver, another teenager, drove the car off the road and into is a tree. she has been as rebecca gurley. we have new details now on a lawsuit against apple. a texas couple claiming the tech giant could have done more to save their daughter's live. mariah was only 5 years old when she was killed in a car crash by

a driver using facetime behind the wheel. they filed a lawsuit blaming apple for their daughter's death. they had the tech giant could have used lockout technology. >> judges generally don't want that kind of decision made in a courtroom. >> apple said it cannot comment on the lawsuit. space ex is getting ready and setting a date for its next rocket launch. a helium tank inside a falcon 9 rocket buckled during fueling, causing extra pressure that made it burst. now that the problem has been fixed it wants to launch 10 satellites by sunday. the company is still awaiting approval by the federal aviation

wholesaler saturday night. they used a pry bar and hammer to gain entry into the building. the suspects then allegedly sold $6 million worth of jewelry from two different saves. you can see a pretty good look at their face there. they are still on the loose this morning. >> a developing story. four people are dead in alabama after a large tree fell on a mobile home during an apparent tornado. seven people were inside the home at the time. it is is unclear if the other three suffered is injuries. in the meantime, a texas home owner says the fire from a lightning strike left its home in shambles. he didn't think he was in danger until a neighbor alerted him that his house was on fire. fortunately everyone made it out safely. >> we're in a micro climate weather alert.

helping you get out the door safely. >> first, let's start with meteorologist kari hall who is tracking the latest. where is it hitting hardest right now. >> some of the heaviest moving toward the east bay. we are all pretty much seeing light rain at this point this morning. so far we are seeing the heaviest rain rolling in on shore. some of the deep subtropical moisture causing quite a bit of rain. once again as we zoom in is and extending towards fremont, we see the reds and the yellows indicating the heavy rain all across the bay area. that may slow you down as you head out for this drive. what's it looking like at street level. >> the green radar on the roadway would be wet road. so
