and rock slides. we'll show you what we saw on our way here and what you can expect through the day. >> all right. a very good wednesday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are in a weather alert as rain continues to batter the bay area. we have a live look along the coastline this morning as the latest storm whips through. the wet weather isn't going to let up any time soon. >> we have team coverage for you this morning. let's get straight to meteorologist kari hall, who has a look at your timeline this morning. >> good morning. we've seen the heaviest rain moving through during the overnight hours. as you head out, be mindful you do need to allow some extra time. we've had spin-outs and standing water on the roadways. as we get a live look at our radar, we've fired up our storm ranger that is scanning around the bay year. we have it parked at san bruno

mountain and this is able to fill in the gaps other radars may miss. we are seeing bright reds and extending over towards the east bay and the tri-valley. we're also concerned about this area where our reporter, kris sanchez, is now. we do have a flash flood warning in effect until about 6:45 this morning. we'll see if that gets extended. we also see heavy rain for parts of the east bay in berkeley over toward the delta and down to the tri-valley. let's see what's happening on the roadways as you head out. >> kari, we are busy out on the roads. i do have the saturday light radar on where you see the shaded green. that is actually where the rain is coming down and we do have some issues out on the road. chp is warning of roadway flooding around southbound highways. i think a lot of cars are starting to avoid the area. as of now they haven't closed

down any lanes. and also flooding around chavez highway 280. chp was reporting 4 to 6 inches of standing water in that area. and we're also seeing a few minor crashes unrelated. it may just be because of those slick roadways. police be careful. northbound 101 to highway 87, 13 minutes, northbound 87 to 101, about ten minutes. we're seeing a few backups and slowing near the tri-valley. we were also seeing roadway flooding along that area as well. i'll keep a closer look out for more roadway flooding as well as accidents. >> certainly the fact that the last self days we've just seen non-stop rain has led to the accumulation of a lot of water on the road.

that was video just shot that show on the ground level what conditions look look right now. a lot of standing water, 4 to 6 inches in some spots, vna just said. there are mostly flooded areas around 101 and 280. >> no injuries here but you can see the damage. a small fuel spill from one of the cars did force brief lane closures. both the cameras on palo alto and the bay bridge show lie traffic this morning. it's going to pick up. be careful as you head out the door. >> from slick roads to flood concerns. fears of mudslides are mounting in the santa cruz mountains.

>> a lot more rain coming that way, kris. >> i heard kari say as many as 8 inches of rain could fall between now and the weekend, which means there's a risk of flooding, along with concerns of mudslides and while crews did work quickly to clear the roadway, it also took out the power and we could see more mud and rock slides again today. that is a particular area in the four -- both of those areas are

there isn't enough new growth to anchor that water-logged ground. if you want to drive through the santa cruz mountains today, you'll want to watch your speed. it doesn't take much for someone to steer into the other lane to try to avoid it and that of course creates a big reaction. we'll talk more about the rainfall totals coming up and 6:00. in santa cruz sanchez. >> goo. >> as the rain continue, people are keeping a close eye on the st. an sell mo creek. people spent the day installing flood gates and getting ready. we are also keeping an eye on the fairfax creek. this is rozsivaly fire's live camera showing the water level

right now. it's the wind and rain also brought down trees overnight. this happened between laguna and octavia. today pete sois here with a loo at the damage. >> reporter: hi, guys. we have the tree that fell down around 9:30 p.m. on top of a car in the area and remarkably, guys, there was no damage to the car. now, as far as what caused this to happen, we don't need if and as you can see, the tree is still down. the clean-up we can tell you there were no injuries as a result of this tree falling down. >> thanks so much, pete. you can keep an eye on the rain and the storm this weekend as

well. >> well, groped while sleeping and then burglarized. that's what police say a man did to his victims before they tracked him down and arrested him. police -- he broke into the home of single men and then groped before running off with their vehicles. police credit neighbors for reacting quickly in calling 911. >> it's scary, especially in your sleep someone might come and do something to you. >> you think that early in the morning you're either just waking up or sleeping, you don't expect somebody to be coming into your home, let alone touching you inappropriately. >> police fear there could be more victims out there. >> a.

he will now be resentenced. a state appeals court upheld the guilty verdict for stephen carlson. he ordered the resentencing. in 1984 the then 16-year-old carl ston is accused of stabbing 14-year-old tina fayles 44 times. she was attacked on her way home from carlson's conviction. >> the next hurdle getting ready to be jumped there, the team announced it will break ground on its new arena known as the chase center and it is expected to be ready in time for the 2019/2020 nba season. a number of groups, who claim among prb -- it's going to be a

news with the biggest investigative unit holding the powerful accountable. good morning. we're in a microclimate weather alert. the time now is 5:14. if you're planning to head over to the sierra, it is really coming down. chain controls in effect. and for the tahoe report for squaw valley, it is still going to be snowing really big on the web site, two and a half feet of new snow and still snowing. fresh powder coming down and our temperatures will be falling offer the next couple of days. the low will be dropping down to one degree by friday morning. a lot of snow in the forecast as well. we'll talk about that and what the bay area can expect coming up. >> and the rain is already causing roadway flooding. chp was reporting some roadway flooding between westbound 580 to 680 and we're starting to see

and it's lk 379d but we've had a lot of rain here we do have a flash floored prrnl over toward the east bay pfrm. and then we see some bright aso that's where the heaviest rain is falling at this point and with pockets over the tri-valley and san francisco, we had rain very heavy there just a little while ago. it has since moved out. a little bit of a break there as well and also for the north bay where there is a flash flood warning in effect for the creek in sonoma county. and more moisture will be streaming in. we're tapping into an atmospheric river and that will continue to bring more rain in the forecast over the next couple of days so more flooding will be possible, but we all have a chance of seeing some flooding as we go through the day, looking now at some of

those flood advisories in effect and right now temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. we will not see these temperatures budging much as we go through the day. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. let's see what's happening on the street level. >> there's a lot going on. the tri-valley definitely starting to see accidents out there but right now chp is reporting that roadway flooding at 101 along cesar chavez reporting flooding, 280 and right behind that, further down c appears to be fender benders. we were also seeing flooding around westbound to 608 about 14 minutes. i'll have an update in just a bit. >> coming up next, nbc bay area

5:30 right now on your wednesday morning, and mother nature is showing some of her rath this morning as we take a look at four different camera aing angles there. rain drops in most of them from the north, south and east. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. it's not nice to mess with mother nature. who remembers that. as this latest batch of weather continues to cause a nightmare on our roads, you have to take

it easy there. >> let's start our coverage with meteorologist kari hall. >> and it is some much-needed rain but it's coming down fast and heavy for parts of bait area, raising the threat of some flooding, especially in areas where we've had the scars from the santa cruz mountain loma fire, that's where we'll be watching the heavier rain coming in and also in the north bay where the creeks are rising quickly. some of the heaviest rain has shift over to the east bay. where you see that red scan, that's our storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. it shows us now that san francisco is taking a break from the rain, while we do see steady rain moving through the santa cruz mountains and now heavier rain shifting through the east bay and the tri-valley, as well as the delta. we'll give you more views of the radar coming up in a few

minutes. let's see how this may affect the roadways now with vni. >> aside from the row weather floodi flooding. they haven't closed any roads out there just yet. also seeing flooding along second highway 280. 4 to 6 inches of standing water. chp reporting a crash around 880 at industrial parkway. we're starting to see a lot of the heavy morning backup. we are also seeing some pretty serious also due to a crash around weekend 580 starting to see some serious heavy red and yellow, which means that's when the traffic is getting the heaviest. let's go to those tri-valley drive times. earlier we were reporting that delay 580 to 60 is about a

alert. we are looking at the san mateo bridge. >> we see that it's really coming down in some spots. we'll continue to see the heavy rain at least through the morning. it will be nicely dry tomorrow and that will be our to prepare for a bigger storm system that is set to arrive more feet to the and especially in the spots like the santa cruise mountain. it kin. some of the heavier rain has now moved out of the san francisco area for now and has shifted over to the east bay. as we get a view of what's happening in the santa cruz mountains now, we do have that flash flood warning in effect until 6:45 and looking at some more rain moving through there. as we move over to the east bay,

some shouty s fies for shoutiesg a little bit of clearing as we get a view of 880. let's a view of the roads now. >> aside from roadway flooding across several highways and roadways, we are also seeing a lot of traffic accidents this morning. thankfully it appears to be for the most part fender benders. chp reporting a cross that may be blocking lanes around $ chp has also recently reported a second unreceipt that could and the northbound lane is also showing slowing. all of this red is the backup all the way down to industrial boulevard as well. as we make our way over to the westbound 580, there was an earlier crash that was still blocking lanes along flynn road.

area and it's one of the ol' now it's able to scan around the bay area and give us an hd view. we can move this wherever we needs but it gives us an idea. that is will. and we've been looking over toward the delta. some of those showers quickly moving to the east so getting some clearing there. but it's still raining, moving toward the treille value here. but it will be it will be clearing. we're also tracking a pow

temperatures are in the mid to upper 50s. it will stay there throughout the day, actually, get but the rain will be getting lighter. we may see flood warnings drop but another batch of ra, and wh the rest of the bay area takes a breaking we'll see that breaks extending into tomorrow and friday. the next round of some heavy rain moves in this weekend between saturday and sunday and the bulls eye is right over the santa cruz mountains where that rain will be coming down in buckets. and that could cause her nom floot, some of our computer mod es are showing we will have the potential of several inches of rain, up to close to 8 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and at least two to three inches of rain for most of the bay area.

while we get all of that rain, the sierra getting a lot of snow. there could be over 73 inches of snow at south lake, tahoe. that's something that will be monitoring and it's great news for the snow pack. temperature-wise we're looking at some 50s and that only break between thursday and friday. let's head now to vna to see what it's looking like on the roadways. >> good morning, carbry. right now the meteorologistist litz or. they were reporting also a second accident near oak treem farm so we will keep an eye ban along strel park way all we were
