always have the garlic festival. the creek overhe flowing its banks. from rain to the major snowstorm in the sierra, overnight interstate 80 was shut down leaving drivers completely stranded. good morning. yeah. getting along highway 80 isn't easy these days. this morning a lot of drivers may find it quite treacherous. the roadway closed down throughout the entire day yesterday. still more possible closures into this day today. this shell station here in nye yak, they have had to hunker down and wait for the conditions to get a little bit better, as well as these cars as the day goes on. you hope as the sun comes up it will get a lot better. unfortunately the weather will not. this particular region, as you know from our weather person, it is not going to be great situations for the next day or so.

30 folks displaced as a result of this fire overnight. look at some of this damage you see behind me. this is some of the furniture they had to the take out following this two-alarm fire. this happened 6:00 p.m. here in concord. flames started in one apartment and moved to another. you have 30 people displaced. two of those displaced had to be rescued. >> we had two juvenile females that had to be transported for minor injuries and to get checked out to make sure they are okay. >> concord fire is crediting smoke alarms inside for getting the folks out. the person who called the fire said they saw a big cloud of

smoke in the area. it may have started in the kitchen area of the unit. officials believe it is accidental as far as the cause of the fire as of this time. it is is still under investigation. pete surat toes, today in the bay. campus police at a south bay junior college investigating a deadly accident tuesday night on fruitvale. a bus struck a 51-year-old woman during a rainstorm. the victim apparently worked nearby, had no affiliation with the college. investigators are still trying to figure out if she was struck on the crosswalk. defining moments for a pregnant woman when she was

assaulted by a customer. the suspect is was upset about his order and jumped the counter demanding a refund from the waitress. she gave it to him and reportedly he later spat in her face. the waitress, 7 months pregnant, was shaken but will be okay. a student art project is angering police officers across the country. it depicts law enforcement, as you see there, as pigs. it is hanging on a wall on capitol hill in the office of st. louis congressman william clay. it was one of the winners of a student art competition. now, the union president for san jose police worries that painting will cause more violence against police officers. in a letter the house speaker paul ryan joined unions in new york, l.a., oakland and san francisco demanding that the speaker use his power to take down the art immediately, calling it reprehensible and

before another storm system arrives tuesday. so very busy weather here in the forecast the next several days. rain totals may reach in some spots, especially the santa cruz mountains, over six inches. and it looks like the heaviest rain shifted south of the golden gate bridge. at least three inches of rain there. it could reach the monitored stage. for gerneville, it will reach the action stage with all of that heavy rain coming down. i'll detail this coming up. let's see how the roads are moving with vianey. >> with this break from the rain, a vast improvement on the roads. we have some pothole troubles.

search crews are combing the waters near the port of los angeles for a helicopter that cruise ship passengers say they saw go down.

search crews in the port of los angeles for a helicopter that cruise ship passengers say they saw go down. they reportedly saw it before 6:00 last night. they believe two people might have been on board. so far no aircraft or victims is has been found. a mysterious find in a petaluma field. a city worker found a safe in that field, the middle of the field at the end of willow brook court off 101. the top of the safe, as you see there, kind of cut open and pried open. police have no idea what was inside or even who the safe belongs to. 5:26. county health leaders say the person who died was under 65 and had a medical condition that put them at risk for severe illness. so far the department of health said three deaths have been reported across the state for patients under 65.

jose along a very swollen river. good morning, sharon. >> reporter: good morning. we are seeing a lot of homeless people walking along here and sleeping along the river. that's a concern as the water levels rise. you can see where the homeless go. they have opened up beds but it is on a first come, first served basis. we have seen accidents. drivers losing control on the slick roadways. tow truck operators working around the clock, helping drives get out of trouble. boulder creek could rise to flood levels with the rising rainfall this weekend. we could see power outs, falling trees and mudslides in this weekend's storms. we shot this video yesterday at the va is sona reservoir.

a nice little mercedes. you see the truck driver coming in, stopped, is and agreed to help the woman. he pulled her alongside the stranded car. she was able to climb aboard the big rig without wading through the cold, surging water. the sierra getting inundated with snow. some locations reporting five feet of snow. some resorts have been shut down. some shut down interstate 80 for hours, us fromming a lot of stranded drivers. we want to tell you this morning that 80 has been reopened in both directions. check the chp website before you head out. we'll try to keep you posted what's going on. as the next storm approaches, count on nbc bay area news for microclimate coverage on air and online. our free bay area app is a great to keep track of the changing conditions.

new this morning, a fire breaks out at a home in actor ton. firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes. but in that 15-minute window, it caused significant damage. some estimate $40,000 to $50,000 in damage. it is a cliff hanger no more. that is just a met faphor we ar speaking about. an apartment building has to come down. recent storms are act is accelerating the erosion of the bluff just below 310 esplanade. city council agreed to pay nearly $200,000 to tear that down. the city managers he's not happy
