hours. the news at 4:00 starts right now, good evening, thank you for joining us. i'm terry mcsweeney. and i'm peggy bunker. right now we're feeling the strong impact of the storm and really this is just the beginning. >> we have rob mayeda tracking the storm. >> reporter: that is right, you see right rain around storam range as we show you the rain off to the east of san bruno mountain, south bay picking up the most rain and the santa cruz mountains not much in san jose, less than a tenth of an inch so far. but already at ben loman, the rain is climbing. it is this area of moisture that we're tracking bringing the rain rates up to half an inch or higher. between now and 8:00, notice the rain totals, things changing though after midnight, by

tomorrow morning we're seeing one to two inches of rain across the valleys and in the santa cruz mountains, half an inch tomorrow, and through the bay area as we head through tomorrow look at the river levels, napa, st. helena, flood stage, other areas including the russian river by the afternoon just briefly over the flood stage, and updating the forecast in san jose now guadalupe river near higher 101 expected to go slightly over flood stage tomorrow. again, the rain picking up as we head into the afternoon. the other thing to watch, gusty winds winds, wind speeds up to 30, or 50 miles an hour, that is a real problem for trees and power outages that would be more widespread through the hills. coming up on the time line of the heavy rain arrival and how

much rain we expect in the bay area. >> thank you very much, tying in so what you were talking about, the storm is deadly in the east bay where a woman out for a walk was killed by a falling tree. near the san ramon golf course, scott? >> reporter: yeah, terry, behind me the canyon lakes golf course where the deadly accident happened at around 11:00 a.m. this morning, we spoke earlier with the firefighters in san ramon they tell us the woman who has not yet been identified was walking along the golf course when heavy winds sent to try over the golf course falling right on top of her. >> of course, everything lines up, being out in the weather and being beside the tree that decides to come in that moment is pretty unpredictable. unfortunately just lined up in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: now, the golf course is inside a gated community. if you look closely you can see

the caution tape strung in the area of the golf course where the tree fell earlier today by police. no word on whether the woman was a resident and nobody here at the country club was willing to go on camera talking about the deadly isn't. now emergency officials tell us the combination of winds could bring the trees down. all right, scott, thank you very much. a tragic story there, you just heard how dangerous the falling trees can be, they can be a huge problem on the roads. let's talk to christie smith, christie this is where the traffic stopped what, about an hour ago? >> reporter: yes, and i have to tell you the crews arrived 30 minutes ago, i heard their chain saws working, and they got this you c eucalyptus tree here, getting it

off the shoulder, but again this is the area to avoid because there was a long backup of cars trying to get around this even though it looks like lanes have opened again. now the chp said they started to get calls before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, now a big tree came crashing down, again, the area is wet from the rain, nobody was hurt in this but a close call for one driver. the chp said the driver was not able to stop in time and actually ran into the tree laying in the road. but again, nobody injured. and cars were able to get by. but it's not an easy move, the trees are cut back, again, chp trying to clear it out but again the exit lane is one you have to creep around. again, traffic is moving but you do want to avoid this area, because just past where we're standing there is still a long backup. that is the latest reporting

live in oakland, christie smith, nbc bay area news. thank you, christie, take a look at the scene this morning in concord, the chp said a truck went out of control in the slick roads, hit the center divide. officer said the person was taken to the hospital as a precaution. the accident caused a massive backup for hours as crews worked to clear the scene. north bay, scene is destroying roads east of st. helena in napa county where a part of the road was destroyed. no word on how long the road will take to fix. and tensions high in the santa cruz mountain right now, that is expected to be the bulls eye of the storm, now the area is triggering the burned areas of the loma fire. some wonder if their properties will get through the weekend this afternoon. and rick, here is the rain quickly becoming a threat. >> reporter: it is becoming a

threat, peggy, along with the flash flood watch out there and the high wind warning as well. and of course you have the san lenoorai lorenzo river, this could cause damage, and some homeowners, feel for them this weekend. >> every time it rains, you can see the water here, it just keeps coming in left and right over here. >> reporter: he is one of the first casualties of the pineapple express storm hovering over the santa cruz mountain. a weather system dumping at times aggressive amounts of water, causing floods and power outages. >> we're going the lio line it doesn't come into our bed. >> reporter: the demand and supply is running out fast. even the lower edge of the mountains? >> this is ridell creek.

>> reporter: is not in the creek. >> this is a little storm, apparently the big one comes tomorrow. >> reporter: part of north rodeo gulch road has fallen off, and residents fear more will follow as they battle mother nature and now santa cruz officials hope for fast repairs. >> the local residents up the road have been doing what the county should be doing, cleaning out the culverts and the brush. >> reporter: and to avoid more damage residents are also putting their furniture, get this, on stilts to avoid water damage. live in felton, rick boone. thank you, rick, this was a scene here a short time ago at the guadalupe river in san jose, the water is kpexpected to get close to flood stage as it picks up. we are monitoring this area. and people living near the napa river watching that area closely. here is what the river looks like today.

supposed to swell above its banks in st. helena tomorrow afternoon. and in marin county, sandbags helping to block the homes and businesses there. >> yand people in fairfax are worried about the rain as well. what is being done this time, laura? >> reporter: well, terry, i'm right by the creek and take a look here you can see the water doesn't look too alarming, but that is likely to change. the residents say they're ready for the worst and so are people in fairfax. >> we have storm holds. >> reporter: the chief hopes to stop it from taking a toll. town hall, which sits on top of fairfax creek barely escaped

flooding in december. he says this time around they may not be so lucky. >> if all leads to what the predictions are, i think it will exceed the banks. >> reporter: marin says they are working overtime. >> we upped our staff, a lot of people on duty. >> reporter: in downtown fairfax, sandbags lined the businesses, they don't want a repeat of 1982. >> last time, we had water running right through the bar. you could have fished in here. we have been sandbagging for two days, and are as ready as we'll be. >> reporter: meanwhile, others are doing the sandbags for other reasons. >> i'm trapping the water because we're in the middle of a drought. >> reporter: but, most are apprehensive and are bracing for the impact, if the water level reaches a certain level the

sirens will go off, meaning everybody needs to get to higher ground if possible. another man said we have about ten hours until it floods. all right, laura, thank you very much. well, as the storm passes over us it will head inland, where we're monitoring the merced river. the national park service has closed all roads in the valley. now other areas of yosemite national park are still open but if you go in the valley you will not get there. the merced river breached the banks before. and if you are heading to the airport, there are delays, sfo is the hard rest hit, the airport is reporting more than 200s and departures, so far,

strike that kept fresh crab out of the stores. and here on top of san bruno mountain, the gusty winds up to 40 miles an hour at times this afternoon could get above 50 tonight in parts of the bay area. we'll watch that closely in the micro climate forecast coming up in just five minutes. ==vo==

the crab fishermen strike began last friday when a a strike over the wholesale price of dungeness crab is over, the strike began last friday when a wholesale company,

pacific seafood, tried to lower the price it pays for crab from $3 per pounds to $2.75. crabbers were not having that. they went on strike right away. crabbers elsewhere in northern california joined in. earlier today they reached a deal, at $2.80 per pound, but today's weather did keep the fishermen from heading out on the water. speaking of water, and rain, we'll talk to rob mayeda. yes, heavier rain coming through, san bruno mountains is one of the areas we expect to really get hit with pretty heavy rain rates. probably half an inch per hour, there is a live look right now at the san bruno mountain, looking at mostly cloudy skies. but still mainly just lighter rain off to the northeast of storm ranger up towards marin county, and the santa cruz mountains still dealing with

non-stop moderate rain. this is what we're watching coming in after midnight tonight. and that will bring around a lot of heavy rain as we head through tomorrow morning. so rain totals, notice the santa cruz mountains, it doesn't seem like a lot of rain where most of us live. but in the santa cruz mountains, almost non-stop, already two inches of rain around ben loman, san francisco and oakland, almost half an inch of rain, we'll certainly double or triple those numbers as we head through tomorrow morning, right now in the north bay, gusty winds at times, around downtown san jose earlier there were gusts up to 40 miles an hour, so wind speeds, 20 to 30, some of the higher wind gusts in purple through tomorrow afternoon could see 50 miles an hour above thousand feet. a flash flood watch in effect, six to ten inches possible in the santa cruz mountains, leading to quick rises both on

creeks and streams, in st. helena, could get two feet above flood stage, another river we're watching here is the russian river, out at hopland, about 4/10 of a foot there you could see right around the afternoon, and the guadalupe around, almaden expressway, between 2 and 3 p.m. they will update, if the rain stalls in the area, the numbers could quickly change. again, stay tuned with our weather app for the latest changes tomorrow afternoon. probably the heavier rain right there sunday morning 7:00 a.m. through 11 p.m., you will see a lot of heavy rain around the south bay transitioning to a drier forecast by tomorrow evening. by midnight, most of the heavy rain should transition off to the central coast as we see the heavy showers begin to move on, catching a bit of a break later

on monday. mild temperatures, tropical air mass being forced to rise over the bay area hill tops, powering up the rain rates but making mild temperatures bay area wise, up 50s and low 60s around the north bay. round two on tuesday, could see another round of potential flooding for the middle part of the week. thursday, better news for the sierra, cold air coming down as snow levels are close to 8,000 feet, a lot of snow melt, the tuesday and thursday storms we think will have the snow levels, heavier rain for tomorrow morning, rain begins to taper off as we head into sunday night, monday afternoon, a brief break, tuesday, heavy rain making a comeback, another storm on thursday, heavy outlook, bringing another storm, progressively colder air. >> and if you don't need to head out or drive around just lay

of yesterday's deadly shooting at the ft. lauderdale airport. three of the five who were killed had traveled to florida to take a cruise. they ranged in age from 57 to 84, each of them were traveling with their spouses, all who survived the shootings. these pictures here were taken from facebook. meanwhile, we're learning more about the suspect's troubled past. the shooter has been named so far as esteban santiago. his uncle told nbc that while he served in iraq, friends of his nephew were killed as he stood right next to him, something that he believed deeply affected santiago. also he said the family was concerned about him but lost contact with santiago months o ago. >> the double stabbing at a bart station happening late last night. witnesses say the suspect used a machete to attack the victims. the update on the victims are not immediately available. police say the suspect fled and

is still on the loose. officers are investigating to see if it is a random attack. and berkeley with the first homicide of the year. a woman on ridge road was stabbed. she is expected to survive but during the course of the investigation police were led to ashby avenue where they discovered the victim of a homicide. police say they're looking for 24-year-old pablo gomez, jr., described as 5'6", 126 pounds, armed and dangerous. he may have shaved his head, police say. no update yet. and in san raphael in the north bay as you can see on the 101 traffic is moving very well. visibility is definitely reduced. rob will be back with a final update on the storm time line, so you can make plans and just stay low. we'll be right back. with the xfinity tv app,
