little breaks, some spotty showers today. but there certainly has been some intense flooding, freeway closures, even rescues. >> these roads should be blocked, because every time is like a tidal wave, it sends into the house. we can't -- we can't stack bags fast enough. >> you can see that woman's frustration. the bay area reeling. we have complete coverage. "today in the bay" starts right now. a very good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us for this special edition of "today in the bay." we came on early this morning, just to get you ready for some of the treacherous conditions that remain out there. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. there is flooding around the bay area, lots of commutes will be affected, lots of highways, lots of roads are closed this morning. we'll get right to that, but we want to check in first with kari hall, who's tracking the storms. >> scott, laura, even this morning, just driving into work, i saw some tree limbs down on the roadways and also still some puddles left from the heavy rain we had yesterday. be mindful that that may be what you're still dealing with as you head out this morning.

we have our storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar truck, scanning around the bay area, parked out on san bruno mountain right now, and picking up on some light rain. but this is the kind of activity we'll see throughout the day and not expecting much in the way of heavy rain except for brief downpours that will be moving in. but we're also going to see much more activity, as we will have a stronger storm moving in for tomorrow. we see all of those clouds reaching closer to the bay area. still some heavy snow coming down for the sierra. and some wet roads, not much of a chance to dry out, but this is enough to allow those creeks and those rivers to go back down before rising again, as the rain ramps up tomorrow afternoon. i'll give you a better idea of the timeline, we'll take a look at the forecast, coming up in a few minutes. mike's talking flooding and mud slides. >> that's right, kari. that's the issue. the after-effects from the first rain, and of course you're talking about more coming in. most of the roadways that are closed that we're talking about, we have tonight fringe of the bay area. our commuters across the bay are

doing all right for highway 17. highway 101, that will be a factor for folks traveling through san francisco. i want to take you to highway 84, which is closed. fremont ps between fremont and 288, that is closed. that stretch typically susceptible to mud slides. we've had that. and that may affect the train tracks for h train this morning. we're going to follow that. 680 maintains an easy drive. right now, not a lot of traffic. so traffic slows smoothly throughout area. b.a.r.t.'s recovering from a ten-minute delay through daly city. that was due to equipment problems. the weather tends to slow trains as well. so a reminder that the sunol mud slide might affect the "h" train. >> you mentioned some problems we're having out there. this one in the south bay, right now. several lanes of highway 101 are underwater, which is going to make this morning's commute very difficult. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live at highway 101, just south of monterrey

street, down near gilroy. how's the situation looking like there? looks like people are trying to crawl across that water. >> right. and this is highway 25, which leads up to highway 101, laura. and you can see those folks going over what is basically a stream of water. when the traffic is not going through there, it actually sounds like a stream. you can see the road signs behind me, see how high that water is. now, it appears that the california highway patrol may be running some sort of traffic break, because we'll see a huge slew of traffic rolling through here, and then suddenly, it will go dark for just a few moments, but this is leading to highway 101 south, which was shut down in both directions, around 9:00 last night. the california highway patrol shut it down, and by midnight, the freeway was under three feet of water. we even saw a whirlpool in the northbound lanes, the traffic was at a standstill for miles. some cal fire crews, we also saw, stuck. they were on their ways to calls. but luckily for these folks,

this fire crew was table to get to a the boat, with get it into the water to rescue them from the second floor of their homes. you can see the whole first floor is underwater. >> the storm drain that's creating quite a large whirlpool, those are the kind of things we're concerned with our personnel getting stuck in there or any victims getting stuck in there. so we have to really assess what we're looking at and make sure we enter the water safely and recover all our personnel safely. >> they were able to take that time, because they knew the people inside were not in distress. they also saved the family dog. the battalion chief says the people may not have known how bad that flooding was, because it is too late. it's really hard to tell what's flooded in the dark. that's certainly what we're seeing out here on highway 25. a lot of folks not seeing that ponding on the roadway, just rushing through it. rooster tailing that water. and sometimes losing control. we have seen some folks making a u-turn, going back in the other direction. hopefully that's what more folks can do this morning. but it appears that all of this

traffic, they don't have a choice but to go on through. we're going to keep track of the california highway patrol. their updates, but they say it's going to be probably the nighttime commute before things are back to normal, if then. in gilroy, kris sanchez, "today in the bay". >> thank you very much, kris. at 5:05, elsewhere in the south bay, there's some serious clean up going on in parts of morgan hill, which also got hit hard by the storm. the august creek overflowed, sending some lowland homes on second street into floodwaters. homeowners say drivers actually made it worse, by sending waves of water towards their doors, as the cars went by. a clogged storm drain yesterday closed down a popular barbecue restaurant. the water eventually subsided and the owners told us they expect to reopen for business today. the road closures are certainly piling up this morning. one more to be aware of. it's highway 1 in pacifica. the rains have caused a mud slide there, which is now

blocking several lanes. >> that's where we find tod"tod in the bay"'s sharon katsuda. how's it looking? >> reporter: you can see people lined up here at the intersection and this way too along highway 1. flares are set up and police officers are telling drivers one by one to make a u-turn. the mud slide came down just before midnight. cal tra caltrans says this mud slide is about 15 feet tall. it covers the entire right lane of highway 1 near reyna delmar avenue in pacifica. you can see by the size of it, it will take a whole lot of time and heavy equipment to clean it up. drivers are having to take a detour all the way down in half moon bay. >> i just filled up with gas, i can make it. i've got to get to my starbucks. i'll see you guys later. >> reporter: northbound lanes are shut down for now, but we're being told that this area could open up as early as 5:30, so that is the good news, for now,

as you see behind me, drivers are being diverted all the way down to half moon bay, highway 92, and take 280 up to san francisco. reporting live in pacifica, i'm sharon katsuda. >> so this is causing some schools to close. scho we've posted this list of closures on our website, nbcbayarea.com. at 5:07, a new video just into our news room. the great highway at san francisco is closed at several intersections. all of this because of flooding. several inches of water are covering the roadway right now, sure to cause some problems during the commute this morning. no word on when those lanes will reopen. it's really been a deadly storm, as well. the severe weather has claimed three lives in the past two days. a cab driver in oakland died after he lost control on the wet roads yesterday and he spun off

into the oakland estuary. crews found his body in the submerged car. and on saturday, a tree fell on canyon lake's golf course in san ramon and landed on a woman, killing her. the third victim died in fremont yesterday on 880 in a car crash. the chp says there was flooding in that area and heavy rains a to the time of the crash. i want to check in with kari right now. a little break in the storm today, some spotty showers headed our way. >> and we're also looking at a few clusters of some heavy rain. we're watching one right now, approaching santa cruz, and that may move into where kris sanchez is, in the santa cruz mountains. we'll continue to keep an eye on that, and also looking ahead, we'll have a high wind watch in effect for tomorrow, as the next storm really ramps up and brings in the brunt of the storm. once again, we'll see those winds coming in from the south at 20 to 35 miles an hour. some gusts may top 65 miles an hour. also, a coastal flood advisory

in effect for the inner bay. all of these areas that you're seeing shaded in green, that will be in effect. starting tomorrow and continuing through thursday, as king tides may cause some coastal flooding. quite a few concerns here, even as the next storm moves in. i'll have more on that and a look at the complete microclimate forecast. let's head over now to mike to see what's happening on the roadways. >> kari, this break in the weather, but also we're getting more folks returning back from some of the winter breaks, because i know that my kids' school and a number of other schools got back from break, so i think we have all of the bay area's public schools back in service this morning, so we may see a build to the morning commute kicking in today, tomorrow, and wednesday. we're looking over here so far, though, an easy flow of traffic from most of our large commute routes. highway 84 still closed between sunol and fremont. we'll continue to outline that for you a little bit. south bay, moving through the santa cruz mountains. highway 17 now completely closed

it is 5:13 on this monday morning. we are tracking yet again another storm system set to arrive in the bay area. here's a live look outside at emeryville. still some wet roads. we'll have a brief break today, but the showers return to the north bay today. another strong storm expected for tomorrow. , bringing in some high winds and heavy rain. also, coastal flooding will be possible. i'll have a look at the complete microclimate forecast, coming up in a few minutes. and we're showing you a slight build from that drive out of the altamont pass, where chp says be careful, it's gusty, windy there. and slowing for highway 4, which is completely closed out of sunol. 5:14. we have reporters all over the place this morning. let's start in the north bay. the russian river, that's already past flood stage, expected to crest later today. pete suratos is in guerneville. pete, tell usp/t#ñ

>> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, scott. like you just mentioned there, we're in flood stage right now here in guerneville. this is a residential area, to show you some of the flooding we're seeing. see the garbage can over there in the distance. and it's really turned into a lake in this area. they deal with the flooding. and right now, according to the latest information we're getting, we know that the russian river in guerneville is at about 32 feet. it's expected to crest at about 58 feet. that's roughly around noon p.m. that's what we're being told from sonoma county officials. and as far as folks in these areas, they've been told to evacuate these low-lying areas here in guerneville as well as the monte ria area. you said there were school closures because of this. we'll see some of those evacuations off of freezeout road and highway 116, off of neely road, where we are right now. those evacuations are in place and a shelter is in place at the santa rosa veterans bill. a red cross shelter is there, expecting about a dozen. that river is expected to crest

around 12:00 p.m., where they're expecting to see major flooding in parts to have guerneville. residents are on high alert as a result of all of this. we'll get their take on their flooding concerns in the next half hour. we're live in guerneville, pete suratos, "today in the bay". >> thanks for the latest there, pete. it's 5:16 right now. angst homeowners in santa cruz county are still holding their breath after water levels approached but did not crest above flood stage. some areas received over 8 inches of rain in 48 hours and that was enough to have residents near the san lorenzo river very concerned. many people in sultan took extra precautions in case and they checked updates repeatedly throughout the day. >> this was really scary with the atmospheric river that was about to come in. it was really looming. checking the updates every, i don't know, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and really watching the storm as it tracked. >> one resident we spoke to said the river yesterday rose to about 17 feet, but had gone down

slightly by the evening. >> 5:16 on your monday morning. some really amazing video. this is the yuba river, shot by our photographer are on his way down from donner pass. both directions of i-80 closed this morning and will be for most of the day because of the mud slide. we've been encourage yog ing yo take your own video. obviously, be very careful if you get that close to water. >> i want to check the commute right now. there's some standing water out there. some breaks in the storm, you say, spotty showers today. >> still some spotty showers. it won't be completely dry throughout the day, and there may be even a few pockets of some heavy rain. gets a little bit more steady as we go into the north bay later on this afternoon, but something we'll all be watching those water levels around the bay area. here's a live look outside, the golden gate bridge, roads are still wet, and you may still encounter some street flooding. how some extra time. you may have to turn on those windshield wipers once again.

so once again, some lighter showers moving in. we are tracking that with our storm ranger, parked on san bruno mountain. around the bay area, not picking up on any heavy rain, but still watching this cluster of showers just offshore, approaching santa cruz. that may move into the santa cruz mountains. one area that's gotten numerous amounts of rain throughout the weekend. several inches of rain. and looking now once again, some of those spotty showers moving through san francisco, over towards the east bay, in danville and parts of the tri-valley, some light rain this morning. another dose of some heavy rain expected with this cluster of clouds and this atmosphere river, once again, targeting the bay area, with some heavy rain. a look at the timeline now. we start to see some of the showers possible throughout the morning and early afternoon, more of the hit or miss variety and not the widespread like we had yesterday. and into this evening, by 4:00, 5:00, we start to see a pretty good coverage of some rain for parts of marin, sonoma, and napa

counties, into this evening. and the rest of the bay area seeing some lighter rain. by tomorrow, we start to see the winds picking up, heavier downpours starting late into the afternoon and the evening. this is when we see the heightened concerns about flooding, as heavier rain moves in, and still a couple of waves of rain, even through wednesday morning. so there will be several days of some rain off and on, and then by wednesday, it finally starts to dry out into the rest of the week. our winds coming in in onshore, we've had some gusts so far of about 22 miles an hour in san francisco. as we go into this evening, our winds at about 15 to 20 miles an hour. and then continuing to pick up tomorrow. tomorrow evening, that's when once again, we have the brunt of the storm. and seeing those winds increasing to about 20 to 35 miles an hour, maybe even stronger, with some of those higher gusts. and the russian river, once again, as we heard from our live

report from pete, it is going to crest today around noon at about 38 feet. so that will be an area that we'll be watching. also, the napa river at saint helena, it has already made it up to 18.8. it will fall today and go back up to flood stage by tomorrow as that heavy rain moves back in. now mike's tracking a mud slide now in sunol. >> right, kari. that mud slide in sunol along highway 84 that's been going on since about 3:00 this morning with, the closure, also to the map. you can see most of the bay's freeways are moving well. but highway 17, if your commute takes you south over the santa cruz side, highway 17 has been closed of sugar loaf, south of the summit because of a tree down -- i'm sorry, mud down and a pole down there. that will be a continuing issue. highway 101, kris sanchez follows that south of gilroy. we have the southbound traffic restricted. but it is moving. and over there in pacifica, sharon katsuda talks about highway 1 as well. folks are having to reroute. as we look at the roadway, those

speed censors move pretty well. we're talking about this along the track. this may affect "h" train, a mud slide between sunol and fremont. anywhere between mission boulevard and 680, that cut-through is no longer an o option for folks and that may send more traffic towards 680. but so far, traffic flows well and a good alternate for you. right now, a crash may still blocking one lane, but the speed censors are improving. i think that's a better flow of traffic now. san mateo bring shows the high wind advisory that chp has issued over on the side of the road. that sign has been extinguished, better news. easy flow here. the bay bridge toll plaza, wet roads and wind across the span, just a build for the cash lanes. back to you. >> thank you, mike. the man accused on going on a shooting rampage in a crowded florida airport is now appearing in court today. the latest on the suspect who opened fire, killing five. you're watching "today in the ba bay". today in the bay -- live look at

the man accused in last friday's deadly florida airport rampage will appear in court for the first time today. new and shocking video obtained by tmz shows the seconds before the gunfire erupted. five people died, six others were injured. 26-year-old esteban santiago could face the death penalty if convicted. police say he checked a gun into his luggage on a flight from anchorage, alaska. and after picking up his bag at ft. lauderdale hollywood airport, investigators say he went into a nearby restroom to load his gun and came out firing. new video, we should warn you is disturbing as well, shows the moment of impact in a deadly truck attack in juerusalem. a security camera recorded the truck the moment when a truck driven by a 28 palestinian man drove into a crowd of israeli soldiers getting off of a tourist bus. the man then put the truck in reverse. four soldiers were killed, 17 injured. israeli soldiers managed to shoot and kill that driver. at least nine arrests have also been made in connection with

that text. now, lawmakers in washington are gearing up for a busy week. eight nominees for the trump cabinet scheduled for confirmation hearings. >> the first hearing is set for tomorrow. that will be his nominee for attorney general, jeff sessions. then comes rex tillerson nominated for secretary of state. also facing hearings, nominees for the head of the cia, the epa, education, homeland security, labor, and defense department. >> these are people who are billionaires and have vast holdings, vast wealth. and the american people have a right to know if they're going to be entering into those offices with conflicts of interest. >> we need so sort of grow up here and get past that. we need to have the president's national security team in place on day one. >> democrats are still vowing to block some of the nominees, including the first two on the agenda, sessions and tillerson. that's also in part because the government's ethics office has not completed its screening of

bruno. scanning around the area, picking up on some light rain. every now and then, we've seen heavier downpours moving through. as we go into the rest of the day, expect more of this activity and the brunt of the storm hitting us tomorrow. i'll have another look at the timeline, what you can expect where you live. it's coming up. monk's tracking a crash in hayward. >> i'm saying my son said, it's been much worse rain before. now we're used to it by the last couple of days. folks will bring up their speeds and that may increase the possibility of a spinout. be careful. we're watching one crash and one closure over here. highway 84 is completely closed. 880, only one lane closed. still causing a lot of slowing for whipple road. that's the only area we see any slowing for our centers. that's a light commute still, but more traffic returns, back to service this week, as well as last week. highway 84 is completely closed, though, between mission boulevard north, and over here, that's main street around bosco.

that's a local area. and we have the green highlighting da highlighting indicating the fact you have wet roadways through the area. an option for that. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, hi there, mike. it appears that folks are able to get on to highway 101 in the northbound direction, but first, they have to go through this stream of water that's over highway 25, which is where we are right now. it appears that it has receded. it looks like the water is now at about the center divide and not all the way over the roadway, as it was just about an hour ago. these folks are in luck. they'll be able to get on to highway 101 north normally. the folks who are headed southbound, though. they're going to run into some trouble, because 101 south is still shut down between where we are, highway 25 and 10th street in gilroy, as well. this is all leading up to, rather, the chp had to shut down highway 101 around 9:00 last night, and we midnight, the

highway was under 3 feet of water. and in fact, you could see the water whirlpooling in the northbound lanes and traffic was at a standstill for miles. now, a whirlpool was just one issue that firefighters had the to consider in rescuing two people from the second story of their home. they were able to rescue the dog from the yard, as well. the whole first floor was underwater. >> we were able to put the boat in the water and able to make access to the house and safely rescue two residents out of the building. >> reporter: the battalion chief says that people may not have known how bad the flooding was until it was too late, because it's hard to tell what flooded in the dark. that's what we saw earlier this morning, as we arrived here at highway 25 at 101. this ponding was here. we almost didn't see it because it's just so dark out here. there are other roadways that are closed here in gilroy. i put that up on twitter.

tomorrow. especially during the afternoon, as those winds kick in from the south at about 20 to 35 miles an hour. gusts may reach up to 65 miles an hour. also, a coastal flood advisory. the coast may flood due to king tides. and that will be from tomorrow through thursday. and also for the i were bay, we'll have that concern. and as we go into the day, we'll see some off and on rain, some of the heavier rain may hold off until this afternoon and move back into the north bay. a pretty good coverage of some rain during the evening commute, especially for spots like napa and santa rosa, down to sonoma and also mill valley. and the rain starting to become more spotty, as we go through this evening. a heavier dose of some rain expected tomorrow, as the brunt of the storm hits us during the afternoon. we'll talk more about this and look at some of the river levels coming up. let's head over to mike and see what's happening as we head out on the roadways. >> we can make out the green speed censors, because the green

highlighting like over here in palo alto, it's kind of clearing up, damp roadways. not necessarily so much puddling, but still watch out. we're still watching the effects of that storm. this break kicks in. we're seeing a slower drive southbound 880. one lane blocking one crash. slowing you down as you head south of 92. as that commute just starts to build south from hayward in towards union city. but we also have this closure, this stretch of highway 84, between mission boulevard, that's 238 over there. over towards sunol. basically towards 680. that closure in effect because of a mud slide, and we're seeing that effect, areas of highway 17, south of sugar hill road, and we also have, sharon talked about pacifica with the issue for highway 1. slowing approaching the closure. folks are realizing they can't get over through sunol. they're having to slow down, figure out what to do, continue south towards mission boulevard and get back over, if that is where they're going. meanwhile for the bay bridge, a very pleasant drive through the maze. the metering lights are on, but the left approach is a lot lighter than the rest of the

lanes. we have our commute starting to building and wind is a concern across those bridges. so be careful and hold on. >> good advice. coming up, our microclimate weather alert coverage continues. flood fears are escalating in the santa cruz mountains this morning. the communities hardest hit after nearly 8 inches of rainfall in the past couple of days. plus, drivers left stranded. the reason you can't get out to lake tahoe or back this morning.

good monday morning. it's 5:43. we're taking a look at area river levels. and napa river at downtown napa, the river is cresting now. expected to fall below flood stage as we go through the day and then rise a bit tomorrow with some heavier rain. russian river at guerneville will be cresting today at noon, at 38 feet, well above the flood stage. it will go down briefly and go back up as that rain kicks in late tomorrow afternoon. and we may have more flooding there, also, at napa river at st. helena, reaching above flood stage by tomorrow evening, as well. it is falling below flood stage now. i'll have a look at some other area rivers coming up in about

five minutes. and right now, it takes about 24 minutes from 238 down towards 24. the nimitz freeway at a crash will have more slowing because of the closure over there at 680 and sunol. cut off towards highway 84 will be a problem due to a mud slide. an easy drive towards the bay bridge, but we have the meter lights on and more for your morning commute. >> thank you, mike and kari. anxious homeowners in santa cruz county still holding their breath. water levels approached, but did not crest above flood stage. >> some areas received nearly 8 inches of rain over 48 hours. that was enough to have residents near the san lorenzo river very concerned. many people in felton took extra precautions and checked updates repeatedly throughout the day. one resident we spoke to said the river yesterday rose to about 17 feet, but went down slightly by nightfall. drivers planning to go to or from lake tahoe today may want to rethink their plans. this is a live look at the

caltrans camera, near donner summit. both sides have been shut down. a mud slide has closed the westbound direction, as well. this photo from the chp shows the slide on 80. this was adjacent to donner lake. the chp says it could be hours before this slide is cleared. downed power lines have shut down the eastbound direction, as well. that's near kingville. crews still have a lot of cleanup to do in san francisco, where the storms toppled trees and flooded some areas. heavy rain and wind toppled a tree on golden gate avenue, blocking both directions. luckily, no one was injured. elsewhere, an underpass was flooded and closed and wind took down scaffolding near seventh and market streets. in the meantime, in san bruno, the storm also downed power lines. >> looked pretty bad. so, man, that's something else. you know, this weather is bad out here. >> almost takes your words away. elsewhere on the peninsula, a

downed tree blocked all lanes of southbound 280 near troutdale. minor injuries were reported there. >> 5:45. some commuters in the east bay will have to find an alternate route to 580 or 680 this morning. flooding and debris have closed crow canyon roads in both directions and norris canyon in castro valley. this problem started yesterday around 2:30 in the afternoon. since then, the alameda county public works department has issued an update, saying that closure will remain in place at least through the morning commute. >> so problems throughout the bay area. and with all this rain, we've seen plenty of this. cars stuck in the water. some pretty scary moments last night in san jose. two men were actually rescued just off of santa teresa boulevard. firefighters used a boat and eventually reeled them in. and in placer county, a 12-year-old girl was rescued by bystanders and deputies after her car ended up in a creek.

this was posted on the placer county sheriff's office page. they spotted the car upside down in the creek. a woman emerged from the car screaming her daughter was still in there. deputies and bystanders rushed to pull her out. she was initially unresponsive, but came around as those first responders gave her first aid. >> wow. right in time. well, in the meantime, we've been telling you about yosemite, we've been watching it, it's been evacuated. this is the reason why. the merced river surpassed its 10-foot flood stage. there is expected to be significant flooding across yosemite valley. all nonessential workers and visitors actually got out on saturday noon. the merced river has not reached its banks since 1997. weekend rain and flooding didn't dampen surfers adventure spirit. >> sunday night, a surfer was caught on video take advantage of main street. from the looks of it, passing cars were enough to provide an

excellent wake for him. this is one of your commute alternatives. >> yeah, way down in san luis obispo this morning. people may need an alternate route. kind of a break in the storm, but another one coming this way. >> and it will also bring in some heavy rain and some strong winds. that will be tomorrow afternoon. today, still looking at some spotty light rain and it may get heavier for the north bay. we're looking live now at palo alto. the streets are wet. you can see the cars are making it just fine, was there are some travel problem spots. so we'll check in with mike here in a second, still some standing water possible. here's what to expect, with a break in the heavy rain today, it becomes more steady for the north bay, especially this afternoon. another strong storm will start to move in for tomorrow, bringing in some high wind and heavy rain once again, and coastal flooding will be possible. also, some inland flooding will be possible as well. we'll talk about all of that.

right now, still seeing plenty of green, some light green here on the map, as our storm ranger, our mobile doppler rare scanning around the bay area, picking up on some light rain, mostly in sfrain and down the peninsula. also in part of the north bay. some heavy snow get going for the sierra, as well. we talked about some of those roads that may be closed down in some spots, and also, the tire chains requirement there, as snow will continue throughout the day with some cooler air moving in. for us, we are looking ahead to this next storm and a high wind watch has been issued for all of these areas shaded in brown. that will be in effect as we go into the day tomorrow, as those winds pick up. we may have some gusts in those spots, up to 65 miles an hour. we also will have an inland coastal flood advisory, rather, for the inner bay, and for the coastal areas. the high wind watch also just issued along the coastline. that's popping up on the map. before the area shaded in green, king tides may be possible in causing some flooding around those coastal areas.

looking at the guadalupe river at almaden expressway, it has reached above the monitor stage, and it's slowly falling as we go through the day. it will peak just a little bit by tomorrow evening, but not expecting it to reach near flood stage. san lorenzo river, we've been keeping an eye on this. right now, up to 15.2 feet. it was above the flood stage yesterday. it will continue to fall. it may peak a little bit more, but not expecting any major flooding there. temperature wise, we are looking at some mid-50s around the bay area, and that will continue throughout the day. looking ahead through the rest of the week, we will have a little bit of a break there, once again today, and then some very heavy rain, some heavy downpours for tomorrow. along with some strong winds. and then on wednesday, we'll see this activity starting to taper off. while we get all of this rain, here's a look at what the sierra's expecting over the next three days. we may be still measuring snowfall in feet, possibly at about 4 to 5 feet in parts of the sierra.

so some very heavy snow. here temperatures are staying in the 50s throughout the weekend. we finally catch a break between thursday and sunday, with some mild temperatures and some sunshine. i know we're all looking forward to some sun. it will be here in a couple of days, but we still have rain to get through for today, tomorrow, as well as early wednesday morning. mike, how's it looking on the roadways? >> i'm looking towards the sun, but the roadways are looking well. much less flooding reported. mud slides are still a factor in some spots. highway 101 has reopened. kris sanchez is talking about the restrictions down south of gilroy. the northbound still has a problem. folks with not get in towards los gatos. 101 is an option for them. no real option for highway 84, if you're trying to travel through the area of niles.

you have to take 680 towards mission boulevard and completely avoid that area. the mud slide there has affected the roadway. we're waiting for "h" train. a possible delay there. a nothing really out of the order. and the castro valley y as well as hayward, slow build for south 880. still blocking your fast lane. whipple road, southbound 880 had that one leane blocked. now, the bay bridge we're looking at a slower drive as well. over here, the span moves well, but this camera in emeryville moves around pretty well. we have wind advisories. chp says watch the bay bridge, san mateo bridge, and the golden gate bridge as well. a terrifying wake-up call for people in san francisco at an apartment complex. this tree came crashing down on to their building yesterday morning. they were still sleeping inside. >> we just heard a big boom and looked over at the window and

out there with mobile radar. >> it's giving us a high definition view of the rain moving through the area. light showers left over. as it scans around from the north bay, east bay, over to the south bay, picking up on some of the showers that continue to move through, but definitely getting much more of a break from the widespread, heavy rain, and we're seeing more spotty activity today. this is the kind of rain you can expect, at least for the first part of the day. and then we'll start to see storm ranger radar filling in, as we go into this afternoon, head of the next storm system that will bring in some strong winds and some rain by tomorrow. i'll detail all of this, give you a better idea of the timeline, coming up. mike's still tracking a crash in hayward. >> also, we're tracking this with sharon katsuda over in pacifica. she says there's some movement, but basically still, highway 101 is closed. and sharon will report live coming up, folks. stick with her if that's the area you drive. the cad system, the chp reports. still one lane blocked, but
