evident. from collapsed roads to flooded neighborhoods, we're staying on top of several developing stories at this hour. there will be a last minute look at rainfall. an update for when we are in the clear stphrfplt it won't be until late this evening when all of this rain rolls out of here. we see coverage on the radar here. mostly light rain. there have been pockets of heavy rain. the heaviest moving through the peninsula and towards mountain view. we will still see rain come down and cause more standing water on the roadways during that drive. rain approaching newark. farther north near hayward, san leandro, 880 wet again. coastal flooding with king tides today. i'll talk about that coming up.

mike is tracking flooding in the north bay. >> a little leftover in the north bay. the freeways reopening for 84 and 17. we have a crash for north 880, mission boulevard. we will continue to follow that as to what went on. i want to update the closure i told you about. the good news is westbound highway 37 is open towards 101. the only remainder of flooding is 101 to eastbound 37. right now very clear. add some extra time. nonstop rain led to a massive collapse. this is part of the street that just went right into the ground. it happened wednesday morning. nobody was on the road at the time. it is a popular route.

public works says there's absolutely no timeline when that road will be repaired. >> yesterday crews closed minor road near camina lanada in sleepy hollow neighborhood. it is not clear if a water main triggered the sinkhole or the weather is related. it will be closed to through traffic for several weeks. new, a potential problem for drivers during the reverse commute on the east side of the bay. a pickup truck crashed at the mission boulevard exit at 880. the driver wasn't hurt. he has been booked on dui charges. but the truck carrying pool cleaning supplies, crews are

cleaning up the chemicals, including sulfuric acid. >> this is cell phone video of the grid lock last night. the downed tree was the culprit. caltrans removed mud, dirt, defree from the roadway. everything was cleared up around midnight. things are back to normal now. >> right now people in guerneville remain on edge as they continue to flood communities this morning. the river is starting to recede. they are feeling the impact of all of these recent storms. holbert creek burying cars is and trapping residents inside. many hope once the rain starts, floodwaters will recede and cleanup can finally get under way. today cleanup will continue in holster where massive flooding

sent 100 people fleeing from their home. it happened just south of gilroy. the view from our nbc 4 chopper shows the impact. a lot of animals in that area. right now 50 homes are flooded. it overflowed the creek leading to all of this massive flooding. the animals are walking out two by two. emergency services are expected to go door to the door today to assess some of the damage. people in the santa cruz mountains are having a tough go. in some cases residents have been dealing with toppled trees as well. yesterday a tree fell on a home near bear creek country club. >> if that tree had fallen another few degrees this way, the bulk of the top of the tree

would have caught our roof. >> experts say the problem is oversaturated soil. it leaves big trees more vulnerable because the root systems can't hold into the ground with the ground so unstable. >> take a look at this. the lexington reservoir a rushing river. right now they are closed because of flooding. all four south bay reservoirs are at capacity. thank you to our viewers sending us compelling video and pictures of the storms. like this video sent to us by jenco of the los gatos creek jogging trail. keep them coming. >> it's fantastic. >> there's a lot to see around

the bay area. we have had so much rain the past self days. the river will start to wind down as we go through the day. we're still catching doses of heavy rain. you see just in the past couple of hours, bright reds and yellow there in parts of the south county. that is going to be moving off to the east. we will still have pockets of heavy rain today. it's also cooler be now with spotty rain in the peninsula. 48 degrees. 44 in the tri-valley. 44 in the north bay. you can see the rain still coming down in the camera there. wet road. still mist and drizzle in san francisco. a lot going on here. but things start to quiet down as we head into the weekend. that coming up in 10 minutes. tracking flooding. are there any road closures left? >> there are a couple. the one i'm talking about is a crash. it's still not because of flooding. the east 37, that is a flooding closure there. look at your map.

the blue shows you there is standing water. the green all over the bay, slick conditions. highway 17 open. that is good news. 880 to mission is closed. we showed you the pickup truck that crashed. the driver has been arrested for dui. the closed connector closed to mission, which would take you over to 680. that's a major commute. auto mall parkway will take you directly over to 680 without any major problems. it is clear right now except for stop signals there. now canyon reopens after the flood yesterday again. no problems towards hayward. and san mateo bridge. we will give you a look at the conditions. still soupy slippery out there. lower the speeds. be careful. golden gate bridge is a similar situation with water on the lens, water on the roadways.

the commutes are all clear. >> the senate passed a budget measure that allowed lawmakers to repeal obamacare with a simple majority vote. it now goes to the house of representatives. even if this budget measure passes, if it passes the house, the process of actually dismantling obamacare will likely take weeks, if not months. and president-elect trump says he wants a replacement in place first. three trump nominees are up for confirmation today in washington. one likely to get a lot of attention after he was a no show yesterday. >> tracie potts has details on what could happen later this evening on capitol hill. general james mattis appears today after he was canceled last minute. team trump wouldn't allow it. leaving democrats and republicans questioning whether

treasury. >> that is like putting lipstick on a pig. it doesn't actually solve the problem. >> tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> thank you, tracie. all right. let's switch gears here and take you high in the air. a drone scoping out the space needle getting pretty impressive shots. but it all takes a wrong term when -- you know what happens next. it crashed into the top of a viewing platform. workers were preparing a new year's eve fireworks show. police recovered the drone and have only now released the video. authorities don't know who was flying the drone. this is actually the third time drones have been recovered at the space needle. the space needle escaped without any damage. >> we'll just call it a really awkward landing. >> i'm glad you're not my pilot.

we're still dealing with scattered showers. the system will be winding down as we go through the day. looking the much improved weather through the weekend. into the east bay, tracking some rain for the north bay. some of the heaviest rain is moving through the hills, approaching mountain view. and within the next few minutes, you will see from newark over closer to fremont. we have some rain that is falling at this point as our temperatures continue to dip. it is 44 in livermore. 46 in fairfield.

in oakland, 47 and 46 in san francisco. and the flood warning for the russian river has been above flood stage. it will dip through the day. starting to see the water levels drop there. we have seen creeks and rivers pressing and falling. we will see that continuing today the. still scattered showers moving through. we're on the pack edge of this storm system. and some colder air moving in behind that. while we still have a lot of moisture, at any point today we could have rain falling. be prepared for that even into this evening. still spotty light showers. no more of the widespread heavy rain we have seen. at least we are going to the peak of some dryer weather moving in. reservoirs are at capacity for much of the bay area. hetch hetchy is up to 86%.

lots of rain over the past several days. and in santa rosa, 177% of normal for the water year. and oakland over 13 inches up to 140%. san francisco about the same as far as the percentage. and san is jose has had over seven inches of rain. the drought update was last thursday. it will be coming out again this morning. we have been removed from the drought from santa rosa to the santa cruz mountains. abnormally dry for much of the peninsula and parts of oakland, into the north bay. then we still have moderate to severe drought as we head farther east. we will see how this gets updated with the update coming in later this morning. as we look ahead, drying out this weekend and into the start of next week. next tuesday we'll be tracking another storm system that could be moving in, bringing us very

is heavy rain and snow for the sierra. looking ahead, as we make plans for the weekend, we will still have temperatures in the 50s and '60s. a lot of sunshine. looking at low 60s in the forecast for the inland areas. we have been keeping you up to date on king tides. she is live in san francisco with an update on what's happening there. how is it looking? >> well, kari, as you mentioned, it is still showering but the rain is coming down a lot lighter. with the storm system the past couple of days. i'm right in front of the bay bridge. right behind me is the water. right now we're not seeing the waves climbing up too high. however, we are watching the westerly swell. we are expecting to climb in the

midafternoon. there is a coastal advisory in effect since yesterday. it is is expected to remain in effect until today at about noon. what that means is there is a possibility of roadway flooding. coastal flooding. we will keep a close eye. and what we can expect for the later part of the day. kari, back to you. we've been getting some of the photos of people saying the water is just splashing up. but never drive-through standing water. it may allow for water levels to be higher today. we'll keep an eye on that once again. let's see what's happening as we head out on the drive. >> you never know how deep it is going to be. we have a closure related to flooding still going on in the north bay. the freeways reopened. the closure i have to report is

this crash in a pickup truck. east and westbound mission boulevard closed right now. you can't use the section of off-ramp there. use the alternate that is altamonte parkway. they have taken some debris from the roadway. they still have to clean up the spill, sulfuric acid, from what i understand. north 101 to eastbound 37. that is a major commute coming out of vallejo. they are fine on westbound 37. connect over just at the point. that's a good option for you. light traffic there. maybe slippery conditions because of the rain that happened early this morning. 20 minutes from highway 4 to the berkeley curve.

this morning. some of the major problems we're following at this hour. first, a massive road collapse is causing problems this morning. cleanup continues in holster where massive flooding sent people fleeing from their homes. people in gueneville remain on edge. >> all this and we're still not done with the rain. >> it won't be until. we have a round of scattered showers moving in. we will see this off and on throughout the day. only a little bit sun peeking from behind the cloud. probably not the as much as we need. we still will have pockets of heavy rain. heavy rain coming down. and also in fremont.

but floodwaters are receding. today in the bay pete suratos live with details on the aftermath left behind. pete. good morning to you. some of that flooding has extended west of guerneville. we're showing you the same spot to give you an idea where the flooding is. it has come down about a foot. you sew a woman kayaking inside her home. as i mentioned, 37.8 feet it crested. we'll still remain in flood stages. we're talking a lot of rain, a lot of flooding. for residents, it is something

they have had to the adjust to. this is the most rain they have seen in several years. >> my basement and my garage got flood. so i figured i would take the kayak for a little run. don't get to do this very often. >> we're making the most of it. >> it extended just west of town. you can see in this video, several blocks of drowning cars. 600 homes were threatened by flooding along the russian river. and that river is is expected to stay above flood stages until 8:00 p.m. before it starts to trend down tomorrow. before that cleanup process against. pete suratos, today in the bay. >> from the north to the south.

recovery efforts getting under way in the holster area. right now all of this area along south of gilroy is under water. about 50 homes are flooded. bob redell joins us with a closer look at some of the aftermath this morning. i understand today emergency crews are going door to door to get a glimpse at some of the damage. >> correct, laura. you can now get back in where the floodwaters receded to the see the damage. you can see in the front yard, a fence that was knocked down and all the debris strewn about. expect 50 or so homes in this neighborhood surrounding lovers lane to assess whether these properties are safe and inhabitable. just over 24 hours ago, these homes flooded when the nearby creek could no longer contain

the rainfall. it overflowed and sent water into the surrounding fields homes. it created a large lake that in some places was waist deep. more than 100 residents fled. about 50 had to be rescued by the fire department. >> i was woken up. when i got up, i was soaked. when i opened the door, it just let more in. once it got higher, my refrigerator tipped over and started floating around the house. it was just a disaster. >> just over 1 people were evacuated or had to be rescued. the red cross set up an emergen emergency shelter in holster.

the inland areas. by sunday, up to 61 degrees. how is it looking out there as the tides come up? >> well, kari, just as you mentioned, here in san francisco, we are seeing light rain. if you take a quick look here we're along the embankment. we're not seeing it come up along the embankment much like what we the last couple of days. yesterday we hit seven feet at 9:40. it could reach 6.8 at 10:20. we are expecting the westerly flow. i want to say even some residents might be enjoying it. a lot of people are enjoying the rain and running on this cool, chilly morning.

shootings in the east bay is ramping up... the city of san pablo plans to install three new surveillance cameras along a stretch of interstate 80 freeway. ==vo== the cameras are designed to help investigators find people involved in shootings and other crimes. there have been dozens of freeway shootings the cameras are designed to help find people involved in shootings and other crimes. there have been dozens of shootings reported since november of 2015. since then leaders have been working together to track the people involved. >> highway patrol officers in florida say a distracted driver is lucky to be alive after the truck he was driving tumbled off the interstate. the driver on a cell phone while he was driving in tampa, florida last week. a car pulled in front of him as he was looking at his phone.
