this morning. authorities say 30 people are dead after the boeing 747 crashed into 20 houses by the airport. ali joins us live in london with the very latest. ali? >> good morning. that's right. the turkish cargo jet crashed shy of the airport, killing at least 30 people. most of them were residents in their cottages in this little village that was struck by the boeing 747 as it tried to land in dense fog. now the cottages which the boeing struck are right by the runway, in very close proximity. the runway and the village are essentially separated by a metal fence and that's why the damage was so bad. you can see the devastating pictures show the plane plowed through a few hundred yards through the village crushing houses and finally ending up on top of one of the houses. you can see the remnants of the broken aircraft smashed on top of one of the houses. the crash happened at about 7:30

local time, so most people would have been in their cottages and that's why the death toll is still high. rescue efforts are still continuing, so the death toll may go up and it seems like all four crew members on board the plane died on impact. so we're waiting to hear more numbers coming out of there. back to you. >> ali live in london this morning. five people have died in the midwest and great plains as those regions get pummeled with a major ice storm. icy road conditions contributed to traffic incidents that led to the fatalityps. three deaths in missouri, one in oklahoma and one in kansas. one close call captured on a state trooper's dashboard camera. as you can see here a semi appears to hydroplane, crossing over the divider nearly crashing into the trooper's car. two other semi trucks slammed into each other and exploded on flames on interstate 80 in nebraska. no one was injured in that

crash. the storms were so disruptive the nfl delayed the game between the chiefs and steelers by several hours. some football fans might not have noticed as power lines were visibly sparking in st. louis and power flashes could be seen in the dallas area. tens of thousands of americans still remain without power. millions are under winter weather advisories as the storm heads north. let's get an update on all of this with nbc meteorologist bonnie snyder tracking the dangerous storms out there. it's not looking too good. >> unfortunately, we're looking at a lot of rain coming into kansas city but look at that snow on the back side of the system and ice for nebraska. all of this working it ways to the north and east so we'll be watching for potential for more ice into iowa and nebraska going forward through the afternoon. notice the heavy rain as well. dodge city got really hard hit with the ice, an inch on the ground in some spots. your temperatures at 32 degrees, so we're still looking at that potential for a little bit more ice. i'll be talking about a storm that's working its way to the west coast coming up. >> thank you very much for that,

bonnie snyder. let's talk about politics. we're just four days away from inauguration and the preparations are already under way with stand-ins for the president-elect and incoming vice president mike pence. putting on a full dress rehearsal on the capitol steps. as the world waits with bated breath for the swearing in the nation's 45th president. while headlines have been dominated by donald trump's tit for tat with john lewis, which we'll get to, another spat involving the president-elect that is getting the lion's share of attention this morning. after trump insinuated that cia chief john brennan could be the person leaking unsubstantiated allegations involving trump russia to the media, trump tweeted brennan really couldn't do much worse. syria red line, crimea, ukraine and build up of russian nukes. not good. was this the leaker of fake news. those posts in response to brennan's recent criticism. >> what mr. trump has to understand is that this is more

than being about him. it's about the united states and the national security. and he has to make sure that now that he's going to have the opportunity to do something for our national security, as opposed to talking and tweeting, he will have tremendous responsibility to make sure that u.s. national security interests are protected and are advanced. >> that comes as the president-elect concedes those newly imposed sanctions against russia could be removed when he takes office, making the news in his first uk interview since being elected president. trump reiterated those sentiments in an interview with "the wall street journa journal" telling the paper, quote, if you get along and if russia is helping us why would anybody have sanctions if somebody is doing some really great things. still domestic headlines have continued to be filled by trump's war of words with congressman john lewis after the civil rights legend says he doesn't consider trump to be a legitimate president following russian interference in the election. donald trump reacted this weekend calling lewis' district in horrible shape and crime infested and says the legend is

all talk no action. the congressman's office has not reacted to trump's post and while trump has cans alds previously planned trip to d.c. today, congressman lewis does have a speaking engagement later this morning celebrating martin luther king day. some republicans were dismayed at trump's reaction with the gop congressman. posting simply, dude, just stop. however vice president-elect jp questioned lewis' choice of words. >> for someone to use his stature to use terms like this is not a legitimate president, it's deeply disappointing to me and i hope he reconsiders it. >> meanwhile, across the country thousands of americans spent the weekend making their voices heard taking to the streets alongside their representatives, including several high-profile senators, protesting republicans' attempt to dismantle obama care. from neighboring new jersey to upstate new york, san francisco, michigan, massive rallies sought to turn back gop efforts to do away with the president's

signature domestic achievement. while congressional republicans are seeing eye to eye how to get it done trump is adding confusion telling "the washington post" his administration will have, quote, insurance for everybody in place of obama care and said people under his new law would expect to have great health care. it will be in a much simplified form, much less expensive and much better. they will be beautifully covered. i don't want single payer. i want to be able to take care of people. in his final network television interview before leaving office, president obama was bound to make some news and he did. while speaking to cbs's "60 minutes" the president said it was ultimately his decision to have the u.s. abstain from that controversial u.n. resolution demanding an end to israel's west bank settlements and said relations with israel have never wavered. >> was it your decision to abstain? >> yes. ultimately. >> why did you feel like you had to do that? >> well, first of all, steve, i don't think it caused a major
