very latest coming up, obviously, in a live report. plus, the doucountdown is o. we're four days away from the inauguration of donald trump. preparations underway this morning and the protests already starting ahead of friday's ceremony. >> reporter: and it is dr. martin luther king jr. day. we'll tell you how the celebration train now called the celebration train is rolling from san jose to san francisco. you're watching "today in the bay." monday morning, sometimes -- good morning to you! hey, thanks for joining us. >> hey, there, buddy. >> hey. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. kris, looked like she was kind of cold out there. i'm willing to bet she would taken that any day of the week over the downpour we saw a few days ago. >> she just told me she was tired of wearing all the rain gear and unfortunately, she'll have to roll that back out towards the middle of the week. we'll have some more rain moving

in. two days of some dry weather for the start of this workweek. and once again, we'll see that rain moving in on monday. this morning, we're dealing with some patchy fog. and it's been cut down to about a half of a mile visibility in santa rosa, while we are seeing some thicker fog for parts of the central valley and starting to move through the delta into parts of the bay area. so, with that, we also have some very cold air, maybe some freezing fog heading through fairfield. it's 32 degrees there. napa, 41. and 41 also for palo alto. santa rosa starts the morning out at 37 degrees. i'm watching this storm system, that big cluster of clouds just to the west of us, that will be moving in on wednesday. we'll take a closer look at the timeline. that's coming up in about five minutes. heading over to vianey, how's it looking so far on the roadways? >> good morning, kari. still looking very green, which means the there isn't a lot of slowing. however, chp was reporting around 680, and it looks like it

could have been a fender bender, but it appears there might be something else out on the road. it hasn't seen any slowing just jet. chp was on the way to turn that out. hopefully they turn it out in times for this later traffic. today we are martin luther king day, but we're expecting a little bit of traffic to pick up near the early part of the morning. northbound 87 towards highway 101, about 10 minutes. i'll have a look at your south bay drive times, but here's a quick check of the bay bridge toll plaza. a few more cars on the road. >> picking up a little bit, but still a holiday. 5:02. back to the developing story we've been following overnight. frightening moments on a bay area highway. a shooting leaves one person injured and this morning the search for the gunman continues. >> pete suratos is live with the details we're learning about the investigation. we see the bullet holes in that car. what do you know? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, sam and laura.

chp is still looking for the shooter behind all of this. but i just got off the phone with chp and they actually confirmed to me there was another east bay freeway shooting over the weekend. we're still trying to firm up exactly where that shooting took place, but this one we're talking about did take place in concord. i want to show you the video of that black mercedes sedan. you can see several bullet holes to the side of this car. and it all took place according to chp around 5:00 p.m. yesterday in concord. that car right there is actually at a gas station following the shooting. we do know this according to chp, there were two victims inside of that car. one of the victims was hit. the injuries are nonlife-threatening. and also one of the victims, not exactly sure which one, but that victim was detained and it's unclear as to why that victim was detained. now, victims aren't exactly forthcoming with information on the suspected vehicle in this, or the suspects in this shooting. of course, if you have any information to help out with this case, contact chp. we're live in martinez, pete suratos for "today in the bay".

>> pete, thank you very much. 5:03 right now. now to a fire investigation inside of an antioch grocery store where investigators say a group of people likely started it on purpose. >> well, that was the scene last night inside of the smart and final on surmsville road. witnesses told firefighters they saw a group of people start the fire in the paper towel aisle and it spread from there. firefighters were able to knock it out pretty quickly, but the store now has a lot of smoke damage and so far no one has been arrested. 5:04. happening today, another twist in the parent growing battle over san francisco's popular lefty o'doul's. last week, word surfaced that lefty o'doul's would be closing. the managers of the bar are in an ownership dispute with the landlords. today, they'll unveil their plans to move lefty's to a new

location. the landlord says that lefty's will only be closing briefly for a remodel. also happening today, the celebration train rolling through town in honor of drcht martin luther king jr. today. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live with details on the train's route and what it represents in 2017. kris. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. you were talking about the fact that it looks cold out here. it is cold out here, it was frosty this morning, as i was pulling out of my house this morning. but we've been out here so many years, where there's been rain, there's been cold, there's been sunshine, but the crowds always show up to commemorate the birthday of dr. martin luther king jr. now, here's how the celebration train looked as it was rolling out of the station last year. this time last year. and it is a very nice event. it will go from here to san francisco. it is 54 miles, the same distance as the march that dr. martin luther king jr. led from selma to montgomery, alabama, so

many years ago. we always see a lot of families on that train together talking about the past and looking toward the future. >> i should see people getting along and singing and having fun and celebrating martin luther king today, because it's his day. >> reporter: now, if you pre-registered for a train ticket and had to do that to get onboard today, here's what you need to do. it departs the station where we are at 9:45. it will stop at 10:05 in palo alto. and at 10:22, it will roll through san mateo and it will arrive in san francisco at 10:55. there's a march and parade that follows there. and also, an all-day festival at your yorba buena gardens. i posted the link to the schedule of events to my twitter feed and also to my facebook page. you can find me there. and hopefully we'll have it up on our website very soon for you as well. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay". >> kris, thank you so much. happening right now, preparations are underway in

washington, d.c. ahead of this friday's inauguration. this weekend, a dress rehearsal was held and army band members stood in for the first family. it previewed all the pageantry associated with a peaceful transfer of power. today, more finishing touches are going to be put on the white house. well, donald trump supporters around the country and here in the bay area can hardly wait for friday's event. up to a million people are expected to attend the inauguration in d.c. santa clara's juan hernandez is among the bay area trump supporters headed to washington to watch trump take the oath. he says the entire ceremony, at times, has been overwhelming. >> i did a lot of work with the campaign since june, kind of was stuck to it with my life, and got mail, a fedex package from the presidential inaugurational committee and there were my invites. >> supporters are expected to be joined by many demonstrators in washington. so far, at least a half dozen protests are planned for friday and saturday in our nation's

capital. and here in the bay area, labor groups are calling for a week of protests starting today to oppose the upcoming inauguration. the alameda labor council has already passed a resolution urging unions to organize action this week. san francisco's labor council is considering a similar resolution. labor leaders are organizing the largest protest on friday. we'll have much more coverage lead up to the inauguration all week. raj mathai is heading to washington to lead that coverage, not just about friday's inauguration. he'll also be covering the women's march on washington the following day. well, the waiting game continues for the san francisco 49ers who are the only team left in the nfl that are still looking for a new football coach. from ceo jed yors yesterday they interviewed former oakland raiders head coach tom cable. you see him there. he's currently seattle's offensive line coach. the niners are still looking for both a head coach and a gm and they can't interview staff members for teams that are still alive in the post-season.

five other nfl head coaching vacancies have since been filled. from the niners to what's next for the oakland raiders. now the oakland raiders, but another crucial step in a potential move for that team. we've learned that the raiders are preparing to file official relocation papers to move to las vegas. once the papers are filed, the league and the team owners can begin the several weeks-long process that it would take for the team to move. that ultimately includes a vote of approval from the league's owners. that vote would happen this spring. sam, after a week filled with rain and flooding, we have a nice weekend to finally dry out. a live look at san francisco this morning. still pretty dry this morning. a beautiful look at our city by the bay. despite the lack of rain, there were some still dangerous conditions on the coast this weekend. take a look at this. this is the scene at pacifica. the coast guard says a beach hazard was in effect because of a lot of rip currents. it didn't stop some surfers,

especially on a sunny day. >> it was great. can't beat it. it's really nice after the rain. grab some waves. a little chilly, but nothing that neoprene won't fix. >> the coast guard says rip currents are stronger in inlets and piers. they warn against fishing from the rocks. good monday morning. it is 5:10 and it will be a little bit warmer today than yesterday, but still those choppy conditions on area beaches. and right now, we are looking at the high in san jose today, up to 506 degrees. 57 in milpitas and cupertino. heading to the east bay, 56 in walnut creek. livermore, you're up to 55 degrees, and looking at some mid-50s, also for the peninsula, daly city, 56 degrees and 57 today. in the mission district, santa rosa this afternoon. up to 54 degrees. now, of course, we are talking about the incoming storm system for the middle of this week. i'll have details on that coming up in four minutes. as we head over to vianey, we are getting an update on what's happening on the roadways.

>> yeah, we were seeing some slowing now mere the oakland area. and it appears to be just a minor crash that was causing some slowing, but now we are seeing some slowing along 880 northbound near the fremont area. also, chp is reporting a minor fender bender. it's not affecting your drive times. eastbound out towards 680, 11 minutes, and about 10 minutes. but getting a quick check of the san mateo bridge. we aren't seeing any backup there just yet, so this may be a good time to hit the roads. laura, sam? >> thank you very much, vianey. coming up next, there were shots fired at a busy bayer shopping center. now details police are releasing in hopes of nabbing a suspect. plus, a tragedy unfolding overseas this morning. dozens are dead after a cargo plane crashed in the middle east. the investigation now underway to find out what went wrong.

good monday morning. it's 5:14. a clear look at san jose as you head out the door. no issues about rain, but we've seen some patchy fog in parts of the bay area. all-clear here, though, in the south bay. patchy frost and in los gatos, 42 degrees at lunchtime, reaching 53 by 3:00 with a mix of sun and clouds. we'll be watching a storm that

will be moving into the bay area. details on that coming up at 5:17. >> and a quick check of your bridge drivetimes on this early morning 580 towards west monday bridge, 8 minutes. and westbound 82 san mateo bridge, about 12 minutes. we continue to track this holiday light traffic in just a bit. laura, sam? >> vianey, kari, thank you very much. we have a developing story overseas. this morning, dozens are dead after a turkish cargo plane coming from hong kong crashed in a village in kyrgyzstan. the jet reportedly destroyed up to 15 different homes and several buildings on its way down. right now, reports put the death toll at 37, but that is not confirmed by the government. the boeing 747 originally, again, took off from hong kong. the plane was scheduled to stop in that country's capital before going on to istanbul. right now, officials are blaming poor visibility from thick fog for that crash. emeryville police investigating a weekend double shooting at the popular bay

street shopping center. police say two people were shot near christie avenue near the highest palace hotel. it happened on saturday, a little after 9:00 p.m. the victims are in stable condition. concerns about the future of health coverage brought hundreds of people to san francisco city hall yesterday. >> their plan is to make america sick again. >> a lot of recognizable democratic faces there. bayer leaders, including house minority leader, nancy pelosi, were out rallying for the affordable care act, as president-elect donald trump has vowed to dismantle obamacare. house republicans have already started that process. he says he wants to replace it with a new system, but so far has not been specifically spelled out. protesters fear that millions of americans will lose their health coverage in the process. >> my stepson three years ago died of leukemia, just before obamacare went into effect. and had he had obamacare,

perhaps he would haven't died. >> san francisco was in the spotlight here, but similar rallies were held yesterday in about a half dozen other u.s. cities, including newark, new jersey, and boston. 5:17. bombshell from ringling bros. the big top will be coming down for good this spring. over the weekend, ringling bros. owners informed employees after 146 years, the greatest show on earth will not go on. the reason is money and a steep drop in ticket prices. circus producers say the real decline started last spring after the elephants were retired to a conservation center. fans seeing the circus in florida yesterday reacted to the news. >> this is very disappointing. this is something i grew up and on my parents are here. we have three generations. >> animal rights group are calling ate victory and a sign of changing times. happening right now, we have been reporting on all the severe weather here. how about what's going on right now in the great plains? an ice storm rolled through this

morning. the same storm that killed six people across three different states over the weekend, and that is far from over. up to an inch of ice blanketed parts of oklahoma, all the way to the panhandle. but even the plunging temperatures didn't stop dedicated kansas city chief fans from attending yesterday's playoff game. >> what do you think of the weather today? >> harsh. >> we would be out here if it was negative 10. we don't care. >> that guy doesn't have a jacket on. you know, he don't care. >> the football players weren't even wearing long sleeves on the field. at one point, nearly 60 million people were under some kind of winter weather alert this weekend. >> oh, my gosh. look at that! >> a completely disarray. this storm is marching north towards nebraska and iowa. >> and that's why i'll never live there. >> we had a little bit of black ice last weekend and it was causing some accidents on the road. >> and we could still have that this morning, too. because we do see all of the fog rolling through and yes, it is cold. in some spots, a few spots, it

has been dipping close to freezing this morning. as you head out, allow some extra time to get there and be careful. as we get a look outside now, all of our microclimate showing some chilly temperatures starting out. patchy frost in the south bay. it's 37 degrees and dense fog in parts of the tri-valley and the north bay. 39 degrees there. also, cool in san francisco, 43 degrees with temperatures today reaching 57 degrees in the peninsula. and the south bay, 60 degrees for the high. the north bay reaching 54 degrees. so a cool sunshine for today. if you're planning to head into san francisco for the mlk day march and for the festivities there, the celebration, it will be cold to start at 8:00, as the event planners will be setting up, and it will be 43 degrees, mostly sunny into the afternoon, reaching 54 degrees. and if you are looking for some events that maybe out to take part of to celebrate the festivities and celebration today in honor of dr. martin

luther king, i just tweeted one event i'll be mc'ing today and you can find the details there. and now, looking down the line, we'll have a storm system moving in through the middle of the week. river levels are coming back down, but the ground is still wet. when this next storm system moves in, we could start to see some heavy rain that could raise the threat of flooding by the end of the week. looks like it gets heavier as we head from thursday into friday. even the weekend is looking soggy. we had a dry weekend, this weekend doesn't look to be that way. on sunday, there will be a third weather system that will be bringing in some heavy rain. so the potential of rainfall over the next several days with storm number one brings about an inch of rain. we add on top of that another inch of rain. and by the time all of this is said and done, there may be over 3 inches of rain all across the bay area. looking at that seven-day forecast, today and tomorrow will be the days to prepare. rain moves in late on wednesday

and temperatures staying in the 50s as we go through the week. now as we head over to vianey, an update on what's happening with this morning's commute. >> we're off to a great start on this holiday monday, because the roads are showing no major accidents, just a few fender benders, but nothing too serious out on the roads. seeing a lot of green on the map, which is always good news, especially for those early morning commuters. let's get a quick check right now of your south bay drive times. northbound 101 towards highway 87, about 12 minutes. northbound 87 towards highway 101, about 12 minutes. and in terms of mass transit, there are no delays s out there which is great. a quick check of the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are still off, so i expect a lot of happy commuters on this holiday morning. >> or no commuters. >> exactly. thank you. 5:21. coming up, fighting fake news. the program facebook is rolling tout to flag phony stories. but first, nbc bay area

going to come, finally break their curse, and now a visit 108 years in the making. the chicago cubs traveling to the white house to celebrate their world series victory. now, normally, baseball champions visit the white house during the following season, usually when they're playing somewhere nearby in washington or baltimore, but the cubbies chose to go before president obama leaves office. here's the caveat, maybe they're trying to rub it in a little bit, because president obama is actually the fan of the chicago white sox. he's from the south side of chicago. >> either way, a big celebration and it continues. it's 5:25 right now. facebook is fighting back against fake news. the social network is currently testing out a tool that allows people to flag fake stories and they're rolling it out in germany, ahead of the country's upcoming national election. once a story is flagged as fake, it will be sent to a german nonprofit organization that will review the story. if the story is confirmed a fake, it will be less likely to show up in your timeline.

and if a user shares the fake story, they'll receive a warning message. nbc bay area responds to a san francisco woman who had a pricey problem with a shortage and moving company pods. >> and a storage company. chris camorra is joining us now with her story and how we took action. >> christina hired pods to store and move some of her belongings. she said she later needed to change her move date, but that didn't work out for pods, so she went ahead and cancelled the move and ended up moving those belongings herself. however, pods, she says, then charged christina $1,000 for that move anyway. now, she tells us she tried to get a refund, but couldn't, so she reached out to us for help. we called pods, it then refunded christina the cost of that move, that $1,000. pods didn't explain the hang up, but in a statement the company said, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we have caused. if you have a consumer complaint, you can call us. the number is 888-996-tips or visit us online at

due to a minor traffic collision that was blocking one of the lanes there. it appears that chp has arrived and those two vehicles have moved off to the side, which is going to start picking up in terms to have that slowing. we were also seeing slowing along northbound 280, but nothing too bad. golden gate bridge right now, finally starting to see a few souls out on the road. remember, drive safe. don't text and drive. laura, sam? >> good advice. thank you very much, vianey. 5:32 right now. to a developing story. the search is on right now for the gunman or people responsible for a highway shooting in concord. >> today in the bay's pete suratos live in the bay with the details for us. this comes amid a string of highway shootings in that area? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, laura and sam. that is correct and i can confirm with chp there was another freeway shooting on an east bay freeway off 80 that happened this past weekend as well. look at these shootings, there's been dozens of shootings on east bay freeways dating back to

november of 2015. most of those shootings were gang related. it's unclear if this shooting is gang related as well. but according to chp, this shooting took place at 5:00 p.m. yesterday on southbound 242 north of solano way in concord. there were two victims inside, one of the victims in the car was hit, has nonlife-threatening injuries. also one of the victims inside that car was detained, but it's unclear as to why. chp says victims aren't exactly cooperating with investigators as far as giving them information on the shooter or shooters or exactly what vehicle those shooters were using at the time of the shooting that took place yesterday around 5:00 p.m. on sunday. of course, if you have any information to help out with this case, contact chp. we're live in martinez, pete suratos for tod"today in the b." >> pete, thank you so much. we are now just a few days away from the inauguration of president-elect donald trump. and a firestorm is brewing between the president-elect and civil rights icon, congressman john lewis. well, now we're learning that trump has canceled plans to

visit the smithsonian museum of african-american history and culture that was scheduled for today. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joining us live from washington with details on that. plus more information on this week's inauguration. and on top of all of that, tracie, it's also martin luther king jr. day today, to add to the drama. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and we just got word that president-elect trump will meet with martin luther king iii today on this holiday, but he will not be in washington, not clear at all if that's related to this ongoing back and forth he's had with congressman lewis. president-elect trump was supposed to visit the new african-american museum in washington today. his day transcript abruip abrup overnight. >> i don't see this president-elect as a legitimate president. >> reporter: as trump advisers defend his tweets, criticizing congressman john lewis. >> donald trump has the right to defend himself. >> reporter: lewis and ten other democrats are boycotting friday's inauguration.

23-year-old kyle rowland has numerous cuts and bruises that police say he got during a scuffle for his gun. police say rowland was at a party in san francisco friday night when witnesses say he started acting strange. that's when other partygoers asked him to leave. police say a short time later, he pulled out a handgun during an argument with another man. witnesses say they were shocked and horrified at what they saw. >> i just told everybody, get down, he has a gun. and one of my friend was bold enough and brave enough to jump on it and defuse the issue. >> rowland is now facing five counts of attempted murder. he'd only been with the department since october, and since he was still on standard job probation, the department was able to fire him after his arrest. he's scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. it is 5:36 right now on your monday. an east bay night spot that's been the center of recent controversy is going to soon close its doors for the last time.

crogan's in walnut creek has been in business for almost four decades, but now the openers say they plan to shut the establishment down. city leaders recently ordered them to stop serving alcohol at 12:30 instead of 2:00 in the morning because police were responding too often to rowdy behavior. back in september, a man was shot and killed shortly after leaving crogan's. that was the city's first deadly shooting of the year. they're planning an all-day celebration on crogan's and they will close for the last time a little after midnight that night. medical experts are trying to determine if a woman found dead last week in the back of a muni bus died from meningitis. relatives of 53-year-old laura robeson say a muni bus driver found her deceased at the end of the line in daly city last tuesday. according to her brother, the coroner's preliminary investigation found she died from the highly contagious disease, but it could be weeks before doctors know for sure. >> she was sitting upright and he discovered her and said she was deceased at the time, so i guess he called the local police

department. >> if lab tests do confirm meningitis, this would be the second person in the bay area to die from meningitis in the past two weeks after the death of a san rafael man in larksburg. a major trouble spot after last week's storm still a problem this morning. this is highway 37 in marin county, between atherton avenue and highway 101. the westbound lanes are still closed this morning because of flooding. the chp opened up all eastbound lanes over the weekend, but the reservoir on the south side of the road is so high, the drains are still overflowing on to the highway. that's why the westbound lanes are closed. there's no estimate on when those lanes are going to be reopened. it was a if you have last few days over the weekend, but what a weekend for skiers and snowboarders. that was the upside of this. parts of the sierra mountains got more than 15 feet of snow this past week, which means that plenty of fun was had for all those who ended up actually getting to go skiing and snowboarding. boreal mountain got the most snow it's seen in 35 years.

get outside today and celebrate the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr. the city of richmond is holding its tenth annual day of service, where volunteers take on a service project followed by lunch and live music. that starts at 9:00 in the morning on the richmond greenway. >> should be a nice day for the activities here in the bay area, but much of the south are dealing with pretty severe weather. this is a scene at at&t stadium in arlington, texas, after the dallas packers game last night. fans left the stadium and were told to shelter in place after a tornado warning. that's what was happening inside. this is the scene outside. severe rain and wind just pounding the region. luckily, no reports of tornadoes touching down. >> that was a double dose of pain for cowboys fans there. we're talking about the severe weather there for tornadoes in texas. there's all kinds of wacky things going on. >> that was the other big story batching football, you could see

what was happening elsewhere across the country. and we are looking at some more active weather here in the bay area, as we go through the week. but right now, nice and quiet, great start to this week. right now at 5:50, you can see we have some clear visibility in san francisco. and then as we go into the day, we'll get some sunshine here. 48 degrees to start and heading up to 57 degrees. we will be warming up once again, and the rest of the week, more storms rolling in, starting on wednesday. and then this weekend, it will be staying wet with more strong winds and flooding will be possible. we'll talk about that. but as we get a look now on the peninsula, it's 42 degrees. 39 in the north bay with some patchy fog. there may also be some slick spots on the roadways. 57 will be the high in the peninsula today, up to 60 in the south bay. 59 in the east bay. and only 54 degrees today in the north bay. so some cool sunshine. here's the next storm system

we're watching. and that will once again start to move in on wednesday. a large cluster of clouds will bring with it some heavy rain expected to move in, as we go into the next several days, with a few rounds of rain, a couple of storm systems moving in, we start to see a few of those spotty showers by wednesday morning, getting heavier wednesday night. on thursday, a pretty widespread rain. there may be some breaks in between, and then the second storm system rolls in on friday, and then starts to taper off on saturday. another one moving in on sunday. so we're expecting three storms this week, and that will bring in already on this saturated ground, some additional rainfall that could cause some flooding by sunday. we're looking at with the first round of rain, up to an inch of rain, maybe even a bit higher for spots like santa rosa, over an inch and a half. and as we head on to that, we're looking up to 2 inches of rain for the south bay. and by the time all is said and done, we may have 3 possibly to over 4 inches of rain with the highest amounts of those downpours in the north bay.

the man police are looking for. he's 5'11", about 240 pounds. the attack happened at the civic center b.a.r.t. station back on december 6th. police say the man attacked a passenger at the station. the victim, who is 29-year-old man from valencia, has serious cuts on his head and his hand. a new resource is available for people in the north bay who feel they've been the victims of hate crime or hate speech. the marin county district attorney activated a hate crime hotline on friday. people who have been victims of a hate crime or who witness a hate crime are asked to call the number that is on your screen. you'll be asked to leave a brief medical on the line and staff members will return the call within a business day. the service is available in english and spanish. farsi and vietnamese will be added by the end of the month. this is no love lost between these two teams and they are going at it again. happening today, the golden state warriors are hosting the rival cleveland cavaliers.
