four different vantage points there. is some areas mostly dry, but that's about to change. >> meteorologist kari hall kicks off our coverage. >> we'll start to see the winds picking up this afternoon. a wind advisory in effect. we will be tracking this rain as we get heavy through the day. we are seeing some of the downpours across the golden gate bridge. the north bay is where the heaviest rain is now. we are getting a batch of heavy rain approaching san francisco. we have seen the rain out of napa, fairfield, moving through antioch with bright reds and yellows there. heavy rain from santa rosa to petaluma. it gets lighter through novato. heavy rain in spots as we go through the morning and early afternoon. it really gets intense this evening. more on the timing. that's coming up in six minutes. you're tracking the changing

conditions on the roadways. >> that's right. your radar shows what is in the air. that translates to road conditions. we have that weather data on the track. as the rain travels through, damp roadways through the dunbarton bridge. more intense in the north bay. that's where you see the blue. gusty winds around the bay. damp roadways. the live camera will show you the sheen on the roadway had drops on the golden gate bridge you saw moments ago. also this evening's commute will be tough because of the rain as well. >> today in the bay bob redell continues our weather coverage. >> kari, bob was talking about the whipping winds and the waves expected for today.

what are you seeing out there right now? >> well, we're expecting gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour from the south. the city of pacifica is expecting this as well. the waves may break over the wall. it appears to be low tide just past when they start crashing against the seawall. we have moderate sized waves out here, but nothing that will be causing any problems right now. though we expect that to change. it's possible this weekend waves could be as damaging or as big as the ones we have not seen since 2014, which means you easily see these waves crashing in front of your shot. these storms arrive in the city of pacific a. it is set to demolish another apartment complex. the city informed us dental the admission workers are at 310

esplanade and the actual removal at the earliest next week. residents were evacuated in january of last year. the adjacent complexes were demolished in february. here in pacifica, we are starting to get heavy drizzle, light rain, and feeling some of the winds. we're not at the 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. we expect those later today. reporting live in pacifica, bob redell, today in the bay. >> as we saw a second ago, heavy activity making its way with the brunt of the storm. pg&e is ready to respond. the utility says 500 more workers are ready to help out and jump in if the widespread problems return this week. even more than that are on stand by. >> we have strategically located in the north bay and the south bay close to the santa cruz

mountains. >> caltrans crews are also preparing. yesterday they closed highway 17 near vine hill road. the epicenter of all of those rock and mudslides to put up a retaining fence to try to prevent that happening again. it stretches 200 feet. >> the town orinda is in a local state of emergency due to a sinkhole that is disrupting traffic. crews had to close both directions. it links to the sleepy hollow neighborhood. after heavy rain last week, crews founded sinkhole and two ruptured sewer lines. they are securing funding to try to make the repairs. >> this is our free nbc bay area app. you can track the storm, even have it alert you when rain is 30 minutes away. breaking news in antioch

where authorities are investigating the city's first homicide. when officers arrived, they found a driver suffering from a gunshot wound. police say he died at the scene. we since learned the victim was a 27-year-old man from martinez. no one in the home was hurt. right now police are not releasing details of the investigation other than to say it is still in the early stages. but they are asking anyone with information to call antioch police. >> breaking nationally overnight, former president george h.w. bush is in a houston hospital this morning after complaining of shortness of breath. according to bush's chief of staff he is doing fine and expected to be discharged within the next couple of days. but the former president is 92 years old and he has experienced his share of health issues in recent years. now let's go across the atlantic ocean. breaking news from italy where a moderate earthquake struck just

hours ago. here is a map of the quake, magnitude 5.3. it was centered near amatrice. the earthquake has been followed up by two strong aftershocks. one of them a 5.7. these are just the latest earthquakes to strike the region the last year. back in october, a magnitude 6.6 quake hit the same area, as we mentioned, just north of rome in amatrice. 300 people were killed in a pair of earthquakes. thousands were left homeless and there was significant damage to many of the older buildings there. our reservoirs bursting at the seams. now more rain headed our way. kari hall is watching the first of three storms. and as we get a look at the radar in san francisco, pretty much all covered with heavier rain moving in.

already coming in. they are tracking a series of new storms headed towards the bay area. and wind advisories as well. >> we expect the winds to come up later today. a series on of stronger storms move in. a live look at san jose. still dry. we will start to the see spotty light showers moving in. here's what we are expecting. the potential of localized flooding. also wind gusts. today up to 50 miles per hour. be prepared for the possibility of some downed trees, power lines and coastal erosion. we are starting to see some of the heavier rain moving in. a couple of spots where we have seen the rain. just a little bit heavier than others. it's now moving through parts of mill valley, oakland. san francisco you are seeing a wave of very heavy rain moving in now. as we get a closer look, napa you had heavy rain a few minutes

ago. it's starting to pick back up once again. you will see that for another 15 or 20 minutes. petaluma, rain will be winding down for a little while after we see this moving through for the next 20 to 30 minutes. in san rafael, he very heavy rain, low visibility. that extends down into san francisco near the bay view district. san ma tea seeing lighter showers. over to the oakland, the heavy rain moving in. it will be with you several minutes. lighter showers toward the tri-valley. and pockets of heavier rain. we have yet to see the rain moving in. it will be there soon. seeing the showers becoming more widespread through 8:00, 9:00. as many more people get out there on the roadways. shortly before noon, we will all be seeing some rain.

the heaviest in the north bay. that works its way south into this afternoon and this evening. that will be the peak of the storm. strong winds 40 to 50 miles per hour. it will still linger early tomorrow morning. the next storm is set to arrive on friday morning. so not much of a break in between. at least we will at time have breaks in there. we are closely watching our coastal areas as we expect very high waves. 20 to foot west-north westerly swell that could result in coastal erosion. temperaturewise, 50s in san francisco. we will continue to see the rain off and on. not catching a break here until tuesday when all of this rain finally clears out. is it still looking fairly

after last week's major soaking. now we are going to be dealing with whipping winds on top of it. >> all right. double dose of weather elements. let's start with meteorologist kari hall. kari, good morning. >> good morning. yes, the first one moving in with heavy rain. we will see this in waves as we go through the day. it's going to put some additional rainfall on top of the very wet ground we had from the systems is from last week. as this moves in, we are seeing bright reds on the sraeurd from vallejo, extending east of oakland. it's not saying that long but it is putting down rain on the roadways. as you head into the east bay, also seeing some rain with these three systems, we are expecting the potential of at least three to four inches of rain in spots. more on that coming up in six minutes. as we head over to mike, how is it
