former president, george h.w. bush, and former first lady, barbara bush, both hospitalized. said to be resting comfortably, but because of their ages, there's a lot of concern. >> of course, we add our thoughts and prayers among many out there. >> we will have more on their conditions later for you. >> we will. let's start with breaking news. in central italy, where an earthquake triggered an avalanche and has buried a hotel at a ski resort. rescuers at the scene, after struggling to reach the site overnight. lucy kafanov joins us with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: 30 people are missing. one person is confirmed dead as the search effort continues. disaster striking in the dead of night. the massive avalanche burying a mountainside ski resort. this is the terrifying aftermath. the indoor pool inundated by debris.

windows blocked. the hallways unpassable. rescue workers scramble to search on skis. using shovels against a mountain of snow. a race against the clock to get to survivors. this man was lucky. he was rescued. dozens are still unaccounted for. heavy snowfall complicating the search. even plows had trouble clearing the roads. this region was devastated by a deadly quake just five months ago. 300 people died. historic towns obliterated. yesterday, a series of earthquakes jolted the area again. beneath the snow, a luxury spa and ski resort. the four-star chalet was popular with families. now, a scene of devastation. 22 guests were registered at the hotel. six or seven staff members. most are missing. relatives are desperate for news of loved ones. they are being brought to hospital, she says, but i don't know. it's impossible for us to go up. as daylight breaks, choppers

arrive to assess the damage. the idyllic surroundings, now, a scene of tragedy. officials aren't sure what triggered the avalanche. it could have been the earthquakes. it could have been the heavy snowstorms in that area. search efforts are still under way this morning. everyone hoping for the best. also bracing for the worst. matt, tamron. >> lucy, thank you. now, to the other breaking news we told you about at the top of the show. hran that was engulfed by fire and smoke, collapsed today as firefighters were battling the flames. iran's state-run media says 30 people were injured. the plasco building, an iconic tower, came down in a matter of seconds in a scene captured by live television. it's mostly commercial and attached to a shopping mall. no word on how the fire started. we want to turn to politics now and the countdown to inauguration which is a day

away. for the second night in a row, donald trump made a quick trip to washington. he attended two fund-raisers and paid a surprise visit to his newest hotel before going back to new york. >> the president-elect will be in the capital, where events are ramping up. including a concert at the lincoln memorial. >> and donald trump is rounding out his cabinet choices. tapping former georgia governor, sonny perdue to head the agriculture department. he would be the first southerner to hold that position in 20 years. we have in depth coverage on the eve of the inauguration, starting with nbc national correspondent, peter alexander, just a couple blocks away at trump tower. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the official festivities begin this afternoon. he will be leaving here in half an hour, taking a military plane

to washington. overnight, the incoming commander in chief tweeted out a photo with himself, meeting privately with wounded warriors in washington. this morning, he is waking up here at trump tower. he will head to washington where he will spend the night tonight, getting ready for the inaugural ceremony. ahead of his first official act as president, the inaugural address, trump tweeted this picture of himself, writing a speech three weeks ago at mara-lago, his florida estate, what he calls the winter white house. on top today, a wreath laying at arlington national cemetery. followed by a make america great again celebration at the lincoln memorial. trump is going to speak. toby keith and lee greenwood performing. mike pence said they will begin rolling back president obama's executive actions immediately. >> you're going to see on that coming monday morning, the president sit down at his desk and begin to both repeal and put into place executive action that will start the process of

implementing the agenda that we ran on. >> reporter: some are concerned about that agenda. overnight, lgbt activists gathered outside of pence's new home. holding what they called a dance party. the soon-to-be vice president opposes same-sex marriage, stoking fear in the gay community. and on capitol hill, democrats are taking aim at two trump cabinet nominees, including hhs pick, congressman tom price, a retired surgeon who could oversee the dismantling of obama. >> i'm very frightened about what you are going to do and so are millions of americans. >> i hope that we're able to work together to truly solve these difficult challenges we have in our nation. >> reporter: price is fending off tough questions about purchasing medical stocks days before pushing legislation that would benefit that company. >> did you sell the stock? >> i complied with the rules of the house -- in an above board manner and in a transparent way. >> i asked if the rules of the house let you to this. >> reporter: elizabeth warren also scolding price over the

fate of medicare and medicaid. >> you might want print out president-elect trump's statement, i am not going to cut medicare or medicaid and post that over your desk. in your new office. >> really? >> to the job of -- >> you are going to be the head of the agency to protect the environment. and your personal feelings on whether climate change is caused by human activity and carbon emissions is immaterial. >> reporter: comparatively smooth sailing for nikki haley, the u.n. ambassador nominee, the third cabinet pick to break with trump over the issue of russian aggression. >> i don't think we can trust them. we have to make sure we try to see what we can get from them before we give to them.

>> reporter: more confirmation hears scheduled for today, including the treasury secretary pick, steve mnuchin and for rick perry, the pick for energy secretary, and sonny purdue, what that means for agriculture secretary, if confirmed, the cabinet won't include a democrat ic politician or latino for a generation. matt and tamron? >> thank you. as for president obama, this is his last full day in office. during the final news conference of his presidency, he offered words of advice to the next commander in chief, and fielded questions about his future. kristen welker was there. good morning. >> reporter: tamron, good morning to you. many past presidents have enjoyed fading into the background after they leave office, but as president obama backs up here at the office, he's making it clear that he won't hesitate to jump back into the political fray. president obama looking to the future, as he prepares to leave the white house.

>> the difference between that normal functioning of politics and certain issues or certain moments where i think our core values may be at stake. >> reporter: in his final news conference, mr. obama making it clear, unlike his predecessor, george w. bush, who has largely stayed out of the political fray in retirement, obama plans to speak out, if he believes america's core values are threatened. >> if i saw systematic discrimination being ratified in some fashion, obstacles of people to vote. efforts to round up kids who have grown up here, and for all practical purposes, are american kids and send them some place else. >> reporter: and mr. obama, again, warning president-elect trump, governing is more complicated than campaigning. citing the complex situation between the israelis and palestinians. >> going to make big shifts in

policy, just make sure you thought it through. and understand that there's going to be consequences. you don't want to do things off the cuff when it comes to an issue this volatile. >> reporter: the president, reflective and defending his controversial decision to commute the sentence of chelsea manning, the transgender soldier who leaked documents to wikileaks. >> chelsea manning has served a tough prison sentence. i feel very comfortable that justice has been served and that a message has still been sent. >> reporter: while mr. obama is determined to stay engaged, he acknowledged the desire to unwind. >> i want to do some writing. i want to be quiet a little bit and not hear myself talk so darn much. i want to spend precious time with my girls. >> reporter: the president ending on much the same note that first delivered him to the white house, touting the importance of hope. >> that's what this presidency tried to be about. at my core, i think we're going

to be okay. >> reporter: the president also said while his daughters were disappointed in the election results, they're not moping around. the next time we'll hear from mr. obama, he will no longer be president. in fact, he will give a final farewell speech at joint base andrews after the inauguration, and then, he and his family will depart for a vacation in palm springs. tamron, matt. for more on what to watch and listen for, let's bring in mark halperin. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to talk about the inaugural in a second. i want to start with president obama, what he said in that press conference. he's going to be quieter. but he will reserve the right to speak out if he sees times when our core values are being challenged. he's a young guy. >> there's going to be a huge vacuum. and he and joe biden are going to feel pressure to fill it. it will be fascinating to watch. every day he's going to face choices. even if donald trump is on his best behavior, he's going to do things that i think barack obama

doesn't like. and he's going to face a choice as a former president. he will be closer to the bill clinton model, annotator in chief, than the george w. bush model, of basically in retirement, silent. >> the president-elect tweeted out a picture saying he wrote his own inaugural address. the transition had highs and lows and has been combative in some cases. what does he need to do tomorrow if he needs to continue that message of hope? >> tomorrow has to be a tale of two stories. it will look like a normal inaugural address. a lot of pomp and circumstance and organization. but it's donald trump. let's be real. donald trump is president is going to strike a lot of americans. even people that voted for him, as so different. the speech is going to be short. and themematic. and it's going to be -- i think it will be a lot like he did on election night. try to be a unifier. but remind people why he got elected. >> an inaugural is like a visual political potpourri. there's a lot going on. where are you going to train your eyes? >> i'm going to watch donald trump's demeanor. there have been several times,

including election night, where he was so calm. he was a calming presence. can't help but watch the clintons, though. we have not seen the clintons in the public space since the day after the election. how do they react? they're pretty good poker faces. but this is the ultimate test of a poker face. >> and in his inaugural address, donald trump brings up the repealing obamacare, the affordable care act with president obama sitting right there. might want to watch that face, as well. >> that relationship has been fascinating. they both talk about it a liberty. but president obama wants to preserve as much of it as possible. donald trump says he's for covering everybody. if he brings it up, it will be a light touch. i think president obama will react with a light touch. >> appreciate it. stay with nbc news for complete coverage of tomorrow's inauguration. we're headed to washington. we will bring it to you live starting at 7:00 a.m. both are at a houston hospital

this morning. gabe gutierrez is there. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're told mr. bush and mrs. bush is resting comfortably. mr. bush is in stable here in the intensive care unit. his wife hadn't been feeling well the past few days. she was admitted as a precaution. this morning, more well-wishes are pouring in for the 41st president of the united states and his wife, at the same houston hospital. george h.w. bush in intensive care with pneumonia. former first lady, barbara bush under precautionary observation for fatigue and coughing. >> even though they're 91 and 92 years old, and even they are facing these difficulties, we're of the firm belief there's not a lot of money to be made betting against the bushes. >> reporter: the oldest living u.s. president was admitted on saturday for shortness of breath but only became public four days later. and he took a turn with a blockage in his lungs. doctors sedated him to clear his airway. >> they are as fine as a couple

as we know. we want to send our prayers and our love to them. >> reporter: the teenage sweethearts who met at a school dance just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. >> i've been the luckiest woman in the world. >> reporter: just last week, mr. bush sent a note to president-elect trump, saying he could not attend friday's inauguration. my doctor says, if i sit outside in january, it will likely put me six feet under. but we will be with you in spirit. mr. trump tweeted a speedy recovery. thanking him for his wonderful letter. also sending her best wishes, hillary clinton, looking forward to you both being back on your feet soon, wild socks and all. and, of course, granddaughter, and "today" show correspondent, jenna bush hager. >> he really is one of the most humble men in the world and i adore him. the thing is how lucky for our whole family that we have people that think about us.

>> reporter: this is mr. bush's fourth hospital stay in the last five years. mr. bush had been telling people he expected to be released later this week. now, the family is waiting for the medication to run its course. keep in mind, this is a man who sky dived for his 90th birthday. >> he is a tough guy. >> he is. and we said it before. our thoughts and prayers. such a connection. the love they shared. and the life. and what we've been able to witness through jenna bush, as well. >> mr. roker is here. a check of the weather? >> third year in a row we have had the earth at its warmest temperature ever. and once again, we are looking at very warm temperatures. take a look. u.s. and north america. the warmest year on record. south america, it ended up being the second-warmest year on record, for the continent of africa. they saw the second-warmest in europe. came in at the third-warmest. and asia, checking in as third warmest. and australia, coming in very warm. only the fifth warmest.

♪ 7:30, now, on this thursday morning. the 19th day of january, 2017. the camera keeps swinging around. you can see a pretty shot of the sunrise, streaming down 49th street through the american flag. a couple times a morning we get that kind of beautiful light here, which is great. >> that is stunning. here's a look at what's making headlines over. an avalanche buried a hotel at a ski resort in central italy, trapping dozens of people inside. rescuers are on the scene this morning searching for survivors. at least one man has been pulled out alive. the president-elect, donald trump, has a busy day ahead of him on the eve of his inauguration. he'll attend a wreath laying ceremony at arlington national cemetery.

that happens this afternoon. and then tonight he's scheduled to speak at a welcome concert at the lincoln memorial. and president obama had plenty to say during his final news conference. he defended his decision to commute the prison sentence of convicted leaker chelsea manning. thanked reporters for keeping his administration honest. and reveal the advice he gave to president-elect trump. >> this is something i have told him. that this is a job of such magnitude, that you can't do it by yourself. you are enormously reliant on a team. >> as for his post-white house plans, president obama says he will spend time with his girls and do some writing. he also vowed to speak up when he feels america's core values are at stake. now, to a story that's a big talker in hollywood. plans to bring the monica lewinsky scandal to television. nbc's joe fryer has more on that. joe, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. the producers behind "the people versus o.j. simpson" are working on a new and equally compelling project. fx confirms they are considering the monica lewinsky scandal for a miniseries. it's a headline story from the 1990s that's still generating interest today. >> monica! >> it's the scandal that stunned the nation and nearly brought down a president. an affair between a white house intern and the sitting commander in chief. >> i did not have sexual relations with that woman. >> reporter: now, the real-life story could be getting the hollywood treatment. producers behind the fx franchise, american crime story, have optioned the book, "a vast conspiracy" that also was written by jeffrey toobin. >> we have the fibers, all of

it. >> reporter: that served as inspiration for the first series, "the people versus o.j. simpson." >> what became clear with o.j., and i'm certain will be clear with this piece, is that you don't know the half of it. >> these gloves are too small. >> reporter: the ten-part oj simpson drama drew huge ratings and critical praise, and a number of awards. for its second series expected next year, american crime story will center on hurricane katrina. season three tackles the murder of fashion designer of gianni versace. as for the clinton scandal, the focus will be on the women who played a key role, paula jones, linda tripp and monica lewinsky. >> in the way that the o.j. series was very much about race, i think this series will be very much about gender. >> reporter: in recent years, lewinsky has opened up about the scandal while speaking out against bullying. her ted talk, "the price of shame," has been viewed more than 10 million times. >> not a day goes by that i'm not reminded of my mistake. and i regret that mistake

what drought? rain and snow linger on the west coast. snow moves into the rockies today. another system comes onshore tomorrow. heavy rain, all of california, much of the pacific northwest. and increasing snow for the sierra nevada. look at the rainfall amounts through monday. san diego, you could see the coastal slopes, 10 to 12 inches of rain. the heaviest rain since 2010. even los angeles, anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain, more toward the foothills and the mountains. and the snowfall forecast, along the sierra nevada, anywhere from one to two feet of snow. it's great news for the snowpack, which you need the melt and the runoff for the spring. 125% of capacity. in the northern part. 150% in the central. and the southern sierra, over 200% of normal for the snowpack. that's great news. that's what's going on around good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. still off and on rain today. we'll start to see heavy downpours moving in overnight.

but the focus is on a luxury mountainside hotel that is popular with families, and it was buried and there's footage showing the aftermath inside, and hallways completely blocked. there were 22 registered guests and staff members and at least one person confirmed dead and two survivors now recovering, and up to 30 people could still be missing. italian media is reporting that some of the trapped survivors sent desperate text messages, and one of them read, help, we are dying of the cold, so there does appear to be help for survivors, and alpine rescue teams scrambled to the scene overnight and some arriving by skis and others by helicopter, and this area tremendously difficult to reach because of the snow and even the plows had trouble getting through, and it's not clear whether the avalanche was triggered by the series of earthquakes on wednesday or the record

let's talk about ingredients. >> yes. matt, i'm happy to be cooking with you. >> me, too. i want to show you how to make a beast of a taco. this is my favorite taco. >> short ribs. >> these are country style short ribs. the bone has been taken out. full of flavor. >> guacamole. some pomegranate, which is a secret ingredient for you. mint. onions, and red wine. you want to brown the short ribs. >> yes. we're going to add some salt and pepper. and we want to brown it. we have the pan over medium-high heat. and you want a nice sere on both sides. >> how long does that take? >> a few minutes on both sides. it's really fast. and you want to make the nice crust. you want to do everything you can to make the piece of meat be the best it can be. >> and whatever ends up on that pot, you're going to scrape it

into everything else? >> exactly. >> okay. >> we did what fancy cooks call the glazing, which is you have, you know, the brown bits and the fat, and you add the onion and the garlic. it's going to transform the raw taste from the onion and garlic to rustic and sweet. we're going to add the glaze, a fancy term for getting all of the flavor out of the pan. if you don't want to use red wine, you can use chicken broth. >> that's perfect. >> what the pomegranate juice is going to do, is help it caramelize. >> you want to see a great sight? jim gaffigan in there, as well. >> it's great. >> oh, my gosh. >> it does. >> after that has cooked down a bit, it's going to look like this. >> you cover it and put it in the oven. it's going to cook there for an
