windows blocked. the hallways unpassable. rescue workers scramble to search on skis. using shovels against a mountain of snow. a race against the clock to get to survivors. this man was lucky. he was rescued. dozens are still unaccounted for. heavy snowfall complicating the search. even plows had trouble clearing the roads. this region was devastated by a deadly quake just five months ago. 300 people died. historic towns obliterated. yesterday, a series of earthquakes jolted the area again. beneath the snow, a luxury spa and ski resort. the four-star chalet was popular with families. now, a scene of devastation. 22 guests were registered at the hotel. six or seven staff members. most are missing. relatives are desperate for news of loved ones. they are being brought to hospital, she says, but i don't know. it's impossible for us to go up. as daylight breaks, choppers

arrive to assess the damage. the idyllic surroundings, now, a scene of tragedy. officials aren't sure what triggered the avalanche. it could have been the earthquakes. it could have been the heavy snowstorms in that area. search efforts are still under way this morning. everyone hoping for the best. also bracing for the worst. matt, tamron. >> lucy, thank you. now, to the other breaking news we told you about at the top of the show. hran that was engulfed by fire and smoke, collapsed today as firefighters were battling the flames. iran's state-run media says 30 people were injured. the plasco building, an iconic tower, came down in a matter of seconds in a scene captured by live television. it's mostly commercial and attached to a shopping mall. no word on how the fire started. we want to turn to politics now and the countdown to inauguration which is a day

away. for the second night in a row, donald trump made a quick trip to washington. he attended two fund-raisers and paid a surprise visit to his newest hotel before going back to new york. >> the president-elect will be in the capital, where events are ramping up. including a concert at the lincoln memorial. >> and donald trump is rounding out his cabinet choices. tapping former georgia governor, sonny perdue to head the agriculture department. he would be the first southerner to hold that position in 20 years. we have in depth coverage on the eve of the inauguration, starting with nbc national correspondent, peter alexander, just a couple blocks away at trump tower. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the official festivities begin this afternoon. he will be leaving here in half an hour, taking a military plane

to washington. overnight, the incoming commander in chief tweeted out a photo with himself, meeting privately with wounded warriors in washington. this morning, he is waking up here at trump tower. he will head to washington where he will spend the night tonight, getting ready for the inaugural ceremony. ahead of his first official act as president, the inaugural address, trump tweeted this picture of himself, writing a speech three weeks ago at mara-lago, his florida estate, what he calls the winter white house. on top today, a wreath laying at arlington national cemetery. followed by a make america great again celebration at the lincoln memorial. trump is going to speak. toby keith and lee greenwood performing. mike pence said they will begin rolling back president obama's executive actions immediately. >> you're going to see on that coming monday morning, the president sit down at his desk and begin to both repeal and put into place executive action that will start the process of

implementing the agenda that we ran on. >> reporter: some are concerned about that agenda. overnight, lgbt activists gathered outside of pence's new home. holding what they called a dance party. the soon-to-be vice president opposes same-sex marriage, stoking fear in the gay community. and on capitol hill, democrats are taking aim at two trump cabinet nominees, including hhs pick, congressman tom price, a retired surgeon who could oversee the dismantling of obama. >> i'm very frightened about what you are going to do and so are millions of americans. >> i hope that we're able to work together to truly solve these difficult challenges we have in our nation. >> reporter: price is fending off tough questions about purchasing medical stocks days before pushing legislation that would benefit that company. >> did you sell the stock? >> i complied with the rules of the house -- in an above board manner and in a transparent way. >> i asked if the rules of the house let you to this. >> reporter: elizabeth warren also scolding price over the

this morning. gabe gutierrez is there. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're told mr. bush and mrs. bush is resting comfortably. mr. bush is in stable here in the intensive care unit. his wife hadn't been feeling well the past few days. she was admitted as a precaution. this morning, more well-wishes are pouring in for the 41st president of the united states and his wife, at the same houston hospital. george h.w. bush in intensive care with pneumonia. former first lady, barbara bush under precautionary observation for fatigue and coughing. >> even though they're 91 and 92 years old, and even they are facing these difficulties, we're of the firm belief there's not a lot of money to be made betting against the bushes. >> reporter: the oldest living u.s. president was admitted on saturday for shortness of breath but only became public four days later. and he took a turn with a blockage in his lungs. doctors sedated him to clear his airway. >> they are as fine as a couple

as we know. we want to send our prayers and our love to them. >> reporter: the teenage sweethearts who met at a school dance just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. >> i've been the luckiest woman in the world. >> reporter: just last week, mr. bush sent a note to president-elect trump, saying he could not attend friday's inauguration. my doctor says, if i sit outside in january, it will likely put me six feet under. but we will be with you in spirit. mr. trump tweeted a speedy recovery. thanking him for his wonderful letter. also sending her best wishes, hillary clinton, looking forward to you both being back on your feet soon, wild socks and all. and, of course, granddaughter, and "today" show correspondent, jenna bush hager. >> he really is one of the most humble men in the world and i adore him. the thing is how lucky for our whole family that we have people that think about us.

but the focus is on a luxury mountainside hotel that is popular with families, and it was buried and there's footage showing the aftermath inside, and hallways completely blocked. there were 22 registered guests and staff members and at least one person confirmed dead and two survivors now recovering, and up to 30 people could still be missing. italian media is reporting that some of the trapped survivors sent desperate text messages, and one of them read, help, we are dying of the cold, so there does appear to be help for survivors, and alpine rescue teams scrambled to the scene overnight and some arriving by skis and others by helicopter, and this area tremendously difficult to reach because of the snow and even the plows had trouble getting through, and it's not clear whether the avalanche was triggered by the series of earthquakes on wednesday or the record

snowfall, but whatever for rescue teams it's a race against the clock to find those missing people. >> thank you. president-elect donald trump returning to washington for events ahead of the inauguration, and he is scheduled to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony in arlington national cemetery. trump made a brief trip to new york at his hotel, and he was working at his inaugural speech at his home in florida. we will have the coverage live from washington starting tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. and former h.w. bush and his wife, barbara, both remain in a houston hospital overnight. >> reporter: the bush family members are now waiting for the

could be deported? >> yes. >> reporter: that's your biggest worry? >> that's my biggest worry. yes. >> reporter: across town, another community fears a different registry. >> there's going to be some significant changes. >> reporter: the muslim community of tucson, now holding informational meetings to prepare for what may come. this man has lived in the united states for 42 years. he's a family man and a small business owner, who used to identify with the republican party. now, he sees trump's statements about muslims as red flags. >> the leaders start talking about it repeatedly and the talk shows, nonstop, bombard the airwaves with this stigma that the muslims are bad, it takes its toll. you start wondering, even your closest friends that you are working with, maybe feeling this way. >> reporter: this woman became a nurse after the 9/11 attacks. she and her community have worked hand in hand with christians and jews to help

let's talk about ingredients. >> yes. matt, i'm happy to be cooking with you. >> me, too. i want to show you how to make a beast of a taco. this is my favorite taco. >> short ribs. >> these are country style short ribs. the bone has been taken out. full of flavor. >> guacamole. some pomegranate, which is a secret ingredient for you. mint. onions, and red wine. you want to brown the short ribs. >> yes. we're going to add some salt and pepper. and we want to brown it. we have the pan over medium-high heat. and you want a nice sere on both sides. >> how long does that take? >> a few minutes on both sides. it's really fast. and you want to make the nice crust. you want to do everything you can to make the piece of meat be the best it can be. >> and whatever ends up on that pot, you're going to scrape it

into everything else? >> exactly. >> okay. >> we did what fancy cooks call the glazing, which is you have, you know, the brown bits and the fat, and you add the onion and the garlic. it's going to transform the raw taste from the onion and garlic to rustic and sweet. we're going to add the glaze, a fancy term for getting all of the flavor out of the pan. if you don't want to use red wine, you can use chicken broth. >> that's perfect. >> what the pomegranate juice is going to do, is help it caramelize. >> you want to see a great sight? jim gaffigan in there, as well. >> it's great. >> oh, my gosh. >> it does. >> after that has cooked down a bit, it's going to look like this. >> you cover it and put it in the oven. it's going to cook there for an

hour and a half. you're browning. and then, you're braising. you're making it be most succulent. you want the meat to completely -- see? >> oh. >> beautiful. you take that meat. >> okay. >> bring it? >> you have one? >> yeah. then, you just -- you can tackle absolutely anything. but this is really a great combination of flavor because you have the pomegranate-braised meat. and then, we're going to marry the juice with the guacamole. we're going to have an unconventional guacamole. some jalapeno, which will give it the mexican kick. but we have shallots that flavor that combines onion and garlic. then, we have ginger. and then, we have lime juice and oil and some superripe mexican avocado. i have three. >> is this going in or on top of

good morning on your thursday. 9:26. federal representatives are visiting the stanford campus listening to concerns about sexual violence. that's happening today. members from the office of civil rights are holding office hours where students can drop by and talk to them, this after a letter was sent out to university students, and the representatives are also scheduling meetings with certain student groups on campus. that agency is investigating four student complaints about how the school has handled recent sexual assault cases. the next storm is not hitting until later tonight, but some places are still trying to play catch-up from the damage right now. this is actually new video that you're looking at that we got within the last 30 minutes or so from san francisco. it's a section of o'shannessy

boulevard near twin peaks that's closed after a rock slide. today crews are expected to knock down the loose rocks and install new fencing as a barricade. that road will reopen as soon as that work is complete. cruise hope that will be some time tomorrow evening. staying in san francisco, we have a clear, dry look of the golden gate bridge in san francisco. how long is that going to last?

hours. let's check over to mike to see how this may impact the morning drive. >> hard to see because there's some mist in the area. this is oakland past the coliseum. traffic jamming up because of an earlier crash and soupy conditions. wet at the bay bridge as well. we show wet roadways around the bay. this area right there for silicon valley is the same area kari showed you with the activity on the radar. rain actively falling. we see speeds coming down as is tendency for west 237 and 101 northbound past the airport are the slowest drives. 280 looking better after the crash cleared up. back to you. thank you for that update. we'll you in 30 minutes with more news.

and lightning. towards the east bay near fremont, some really heavy downpours that will stay south of livermore. we've also had reports of lightning in palo alto. heavy rain approaching los altos. where we are seeing rainfall rates over an inch of rain per hour. low visibility, also the potential of some thunder and lightning in that area as well. there's also some heavy rain approaching burlingame near california drive. towards san francisco, the sunset district seeing heavy rain. we'll see this rain off and on for the next couple of hours. we'll have more updates right here on nbc bay area. we're looking at the maps also reflect that blue in the south bay where that rain is coming down. that's the reason we have late slowing but no crashes. things are starting to move better here. we'll move out to dunbarton bridge. san mateo bridge, where the
