two top stories....two storms brewing this morning. the first--- in washington d.c.--- where the nation is preparing for an inauguration ceremony, unlike any in history. >> two top stories. two storms brewing. but first washington, d.c. where the nation is preparing for an inauguration ceremony unlike any in history. a live look at the capitol. live reports from washington. the second storm is by nature. a live look by our radar lit up in green and yellow. reports of trees topples, power lines down, cars spinning out. welcome to friday. today in the bay starts right now. >> it is really crazy out there. >> the drive in was interesting, to say the least.

>> let's get to that forecast right now. >> we are seeing this radar really lit up right now. some lightning as well. as you look out the window, you may be seeing lightning, hearing the claps of of thunder. it is definitely a very wild morning as we are starting out with quite a bit of activity here. now the rain has just cleared san francisco. but some of those lightning bolts now heading over to the east bay near san leandro and approaching hayward you are seeing very heavy rain coming down right now. lightning moving in your direction. steady rain for parts of the north bay, down to the east bay where we see the bright reds and the yellows. berkeley seeing a very heavy downpour there that will be clearing it in the next few minutes. very heavy rain and showers moving through the tri-valley. rain moving into the south bay.

pouring down in morgan hill, santa cruz mountains. and going up the peninsula, this is where we have seen the most action right now with the lightning bolts that we put timestamps on about 10 minutes away for birmingham, san mateo. we have a live shot of the waves crashing up on shore. this is where we will have a high surf warning in effect starting at noon today and continuing into tomorrow. coastal erosion a major problem. and we even have problems getting up this the live shot because of the strong winds knocking out the power. we were able to get a light there from our live truck. mike, all of this affecting the roadways, causing spinouts reported in the tri-valley. >> that's right. yesterday was mild. light rain. spinouts were a risk. the map was much easier to see because the blue, the ponding, the puddling all over the bay

area. five to seven minutes ofdown. the rain coming through the area as well. travel times are just fine. a live look shows you the conditions. this is a test, folks. even though our travel times might be lighter because it's a friday, allow a lot of extra time because the conditions are really rough. at least now early in the commute. >> is i hope people take today off instead of commuting in it. pete suratos is out in the elements in san francisco right now coming down there. >> reporter: good morning to you the, laura. it looks like the rain has cleared up in san francisco. just moments ago, you could see a very wet plaza. the rain was really coming down.

of course you want to be careful when you're driving in this area. when i was driving over the bay bridge, high winds happening. you want to be careful when you're driving in that area. as i mentioned, it was raining very hard not too long ago. you heard the thunder, saw the lightning. it has cleared up for right now. it is a good ideaed to be safe when you're driving on the roads. live in san francisco, pete suratos, today in the bay. >> all right. pete from the embarcadero. thank you very much. much more weather coverage coming up. first, the other big story. a new president in a few hours. the sun is coming up on the east coast. in a matter of hours, donald trump will be sworn in as the 45th commander in chief. this morning amid heavy security unprecedenteded amount of protests. president-elect trump is taking an oath of office to become the

executive orders on immigration and trade. the speech is said to be 20 minutes long, written by mr. trump as well. >> it is an elegant, beautiful, powerful speech. it is is beautifully written and powerfully delivered. >> the trumps attend church is and join the obamas for tea before heading to the capitol to take the oath of office. the transition from campaign to go governing a divided nation. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. raj mathai will bring us updates as well. a big day when it comes to washington. the brunt of the latest storm barreling through. kari hall watching the latest. >> on the peninsula, i have 14 lightning strikes in this area that continue to flash across the sky. some very heavy rain moving now into the east bay. we'll take a close look at the radar coming up in three minutes. >> this picture says it all. the san mateo bridge getting pounded with rain. light traffic volume. tough driving conditions.

meantime, a suggested ban on broadcasting today's inauguration. at least one bay area school district is trying to shield its students from what could be a controversial day. more on that right after this break.

good friday morning. it is 4:39. we are in a microclimate weather alert as radar is lit up with

flashes of lightning from san francisco town to the pa tpheup peninsula. it is is pushing to the east. getting some clearing in oakland as well. still may be some lightning flashes for the north bay. some heavy rain near napa, extending towards pittsburgh, antioch and parts of the tri-valley. rain clearing for berkeley. heavy downpours moving off to the east as you head through the east bay into the tri-valley. also going to see that very heavy rain with lightning in hayward, union city, and fremont within the next few minutes. we'll talk about how much rain to expect and reservoirs that may be overflowing this weekend coming up at 4:45. >> meanwhile, your drive times, no problems. the conditions are a major factor as you cross the bay and bridges. wet and windy as well.

no delays for transit either. we'll talk about what happens weather wise, these systems, and the rest of the inauguration day. >> thank you very much, kari and mike. to our continuing inauguration coverage this morning. in a little over four hours, we'll have a new president of the united states. >> that of course a live look at the nation's capital and the capitol building. the ceremony is get under way in that space. it looks like the inauguration will not be televised in at least one bay area school district following an adviser. pleasanton unified sent out a memo to teachers and advises them not to watch. they cite controversy, concerns of potential safety for the students, and the unpredictable nature of live broadcasting. the memo indicates some parents voiced concerns about a spike in

heated rhetoric among students and the community. thousands of women are expected to march in washington, d.c. tomorrow and across america, including here in the bay area. there are five marchs planned here. san jose at 10:00 in the morning. san francisco, 3:00 at the pioneer monument and civic center. a march is planned in walnut creek and santa cruz. organizers are hoping to send a message that women will protect the rights of their families and communities. coming up next water levels like we have not seen before. a lot more rain is on the way. they are only going to get higher. we're in a microclimate weather

alert this morning-- as another roundf good morning. 4:45 on your friday. as you see there, we are in a microclimate weather alert as another round of rain is whipping through. lightning as well. in many parts of the peninsula and east bay. check in out. a sign of the times. this is the uvas reservoir in morgan hill. what we are seeing is water like we haven't seen in years. at least you get a rainbow with it. all of our reservoirs are at or near capacity. our state is out of a drought.

you. >> the third looks to be the strongest of the storms is. i know. we're saying just great. we're getting a lot of rain out of all of this. >> it's amazing. >> it is really amazing. we are seeing lightning lighting up the radar. i saw this offshore and i was like, oh, wow. now it is is moving quickly off to the east. some of us watching a break. moving east of san francisco and oakland. you're not seeing the heavy downpours anymore. boy, was it coming down. napa, still raining. it's about to be over in the next 10 to 15 minutes. we're tracking all of these lightning strikes crossing the bay, heading towards hayward. where we have seen the lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes. our radar is able to detect that. we are able to see if it is even the characteristics of that lightning streak.

we are seeing it in antioch, san ramon, heavy rain. it will get lighter. there will be waves of this. very bright reds from livermore to pleasanton, union city. low visibility. be careful on the roadways. in san jose, lighter showers. lighter from morgan hill, gilroy, extending tower the santa cruz mountains. more of this energy will be moving to the east. we are seeing this rain moving west to east. anywhere from redwood city to menlow on park. heavy rain. lightning strikes in san mateo were occurring 30 minutes ago. we are seeing the worst of that activity moving off to the east toward san leandro. and you will see lightning strikes there with this storm that has had a history. as we go into the rest of the morning, we will start to see more scattered showers moving in. we will continue to see them with gusty winds that could top

40 to 50 miles per hour. still looking at heavy rain during the morning commute. 9:30 in the morning we have waves of rain moving in. it will not be letting up. still pockets of downpours through 1:00 into 2:00. even this evening's commute looks to be really wet withstanding water on the roadways and times of very heavy rain. we should see this activity tapering off. still there may be times of rain coming through early tomorrow and in the afternoon before the next storm system is early to arrive early on sunday morning. it may arrive with lighter rain saturday night. looking quickly at the reservoirs, some of them are already at 90% to 100%. we'll talk about that coming up in the next half hour. rainfall totals look to be fairly significant. up to 1.25 to 2 inches of rain. most of us seeing the rainfall totals at about 2.5 inches or

more. we may have over 4 inches of rain in parts of the north bay as we head into the weekend. and we have a concern of downed trees and power outages. all of these areas shaded in the brown color will be under a wind advisory until 10:00. mike is tracking some hydroplaning near sfo. >> you would sus suspect that anyway. you showed all the radar activity. the biggest rain moving, as kari showed, across the san mateo. watch san leandro. lightning strikes there as well. flooding report at 280, 680, 87 over the course of the night. not a full closure. lanes affected there as well as the peninsula. high plaining and a spin out 101. light traffic volume. tough conditions allow time. no delays. we are watching highway 37 for

session. some traders say although markets have rallied since election day, there have been few reasons to move much higher until we see what the trump administration can push through congress. 19,792. donald trump may be sporting a new smartphone in the white house. he's given up his beloved android for afor a more secure device okayed by the secret service. president obama switched to an iphone last year. >> the federal trade commission said the company claims the drives can make $90,000 a year in new york and 74,000 in san francisco. the actual average income was much less. it encouraged drivers to lease

welcome back, everyone. we are in a microclimate weather alert. look at the drops pouring down on this live look outside. we're looking downtown san jose. the rain has been pounding out there. a lot of standing water. a lot of solo car spinouts. reports of lightning. we have a look at the forecast coming up. more rain on the way for the weekend as well. a good one to stay indoors. 4:56. o'shaugnessy boulevard in san francisco scheduled to reopen this afternoon. it was hit by multiple rockslide. it closed for the first time during this last week's storms when the heavy rock crashed down from the steep hillside. engineers were then brought in to check the land. they had there was a lot of loose land that brought down by rain. crews decided the best way to deal with the threat was to

knock the rock away before it could fall without warning. >> taking preemptive action there. 4:56. the wet weather is not supposed to stop people from protesting today's inauguration. we are expecting to see demonstrations not just here but across the country out ahead of today's ceremony. a large protest was held outlined the geary theater in san francisco. cell phones and hundreds of lit candles signifying what organizers are called shining a light on the dark days ahead. it is called the ghost light project. that demonstration was meant to represent support of inclusion for everybody. >> this campaign is unleashed an amazing amount of hate speech. and it is becoming the new norm to denigrate women, to denigrate people of color, to denigrate people with disabilities publicly and without shame. >> the ghost light project is a nationwide event. and the san francisco
