taking a moment of prayer. in just a few hours, president-elect donald trump will be sworn in as the 45th president of the united states. you saw raj mathai briefly a moment ago. we will check in with him in just a moment. but first we are tracking the rain here in the bay area. >> yes, we are. the storm is creating a lot of damage already, laura. this is a live look from san carlos. you see that is a toppled that nearly fell onto a home. >> this is another tree that came crashing down into the slow lane on highway 13 in oakland. it is a rough morning commute out there. if you can stay home. i'm laura garcia-non. >> i'm sam brock. >> the south bay really coming down in san jose. it looks to let up within the next 30 to 40 minutes. during this time, we are dealing with ponding water on the

roadways and the potential of flooding for the santa cruz mountains, extending to morgan hill and gilroy. also rain in the peninsula from san maeo, moving closer to palo alto. they are slowly moving south and east. once again, heavy rain in san jose, alum rock, seven trees seeing heavy rain. that is moving slowly off to the east. so it will take a while, but we will get a little bit of a break here. there will be more waves of rain. strong wind gusts. we talked about the wind advisory even into this early arch. still the potential of heavy rain. also thunder and lightning. more downed trees and power lines. details at 6:10. a crash in san ramon. a tree branch down over 17 and the santa cruz mountains. it is is wet but not busy. it is friday.

lighter volume. hopefully a lot of volkswagen are able to telecommute. we're showing a slower drive. this is better than just a couple minutes ago. crash reported in 680 in san ramon, crow canyon road. there may have been break because i saw a lot of slowing. now looking a lot better through that area. tri-valley, a smooth flow of traffic for 680 south. mild storm for 280 and 880. the conditions, look, as kari was talk building in san jose, they're soupy. rain really falling down. despite the relatively light volume of traffic, very tough. slick on the roadways. slow down. allow extra space because you will need that to ease on the brakes this morning. back to you. mike, thank you very much. we have team coverage track the rain.

>> we are already seeing strong waves and high surf. we could see stronger waves as the weekend progresses, pete. reporter: yeah. good morning to you, laura and sam. our viewers have seen lives pictures waves. we have moved here to give you a firsthand look. i want to the walk you to this area. the waves have been strong all morning. you can see they are picking up. really a good indicator is when they start hitting the bottom of the pier. the waves could hit anywhere from 20 to 30 feet. i think we are showing you video of that water actually hitting the piers. when it starts to pick up, at least here in pacifica, it will start to travel over the seawall. they have the high surf warning until saturday evening. of course you want to be safe when you're around these waters. the u.s. coast guard put out a warning saying stay away from

the water as a high surf warning in place until noon. the waves are pigging up. they will get even bigger as the weekend rolls around. pete suratos, today in the bay. >> our team coverage continues to bob redell. >> you're talking about the wind this morning. >> reporter: and the lightning and the thunder. if you thought you heard a loud boom, a few of them, your mind wasn't playing tricks on you. something we don't see too often in the bay area. we saw several flashes of light of the bay, on over the peninsula. it was hard to tell. that was during the 4:00 hour. with that came a torrential downpour. this was the scene 4:30 as we drove northbound on 880 past or cal arena. it was very hard to see out the windshield. we found the safest speed was 45 miles per hour. 20 below the speed limit. we were surprised how quickly the water started to pond and

pool on the road. this is high street where you can see a large pool of water ended up covering half the road. this was earlier in the morning in oakland where a 40 foot tall tree fell on highway 13 at 2:00 in the morning. law enforcement had to call someone with a chainsaw. they were able to can cut and clear the tree and get it reopened. it is all ready for your morning commute. the storms, the thunderstorms, just how isolated it was. we were heading northbound 880, torrential downpour. it turned off like a spigot. bob redell, today in the bay. >> a great tool for you during this rainstorm is our nbc bay area app. you can access all the live radar we use to show you where the rain is falling. we will send you alerts when rain is approaching your location. it is free download for iphone and android devices.

>> the biggest story nationally, it is inauguration day. donald trump is set to be america's 45th president today in just a couple of hours. looking at the trumps arriving at the lincoln memorial. >> nbc bay area has the inauguration covered for you. our very own raj mathai is in washington, d.c. at the capital this morning. no matter how people feel about donald trump, it is still a very historic day for our country. >> there's so much passion here in washington, d.c. there's so much energy in this town. yes, regardless of your political stripes, this is a big day for america in this peaceful transition of power. a little after 9:00 in washington, i'll step out of the shot. we are at the national mall. you see the toll dome. you a lot of security here as well. more than 100 streets in this immediate area that are shut down. a lot of people either on the

metro or walking into the mall. they are expecting hundreds of thousands of people for this inauguration in just a couple of hours. let's show you where president-elect trump is at this moment. take our live nbc camera. this is at the church donald trump and the soon to be first lady melania trump are attending church. soon after church, they will then go over to the white house for a tea with president obama and first lady michelle obama. we can only say that for a few more hours. it is rainy. it is chilly. it's okay. it is actually one of the warmest days in inauguration history. president obama joked a couple days ago saying when he was inaugurated it was in the 20s and 30s. as for the excitement and passion, it is not all positive feelings. so many people, including many people from the bay area here to protest. this is the scene just a short

while ago right outside the gates at the national mall. a lot of protesters. in fact, they are expecting about 50 to 100 protests. some are official, others impromptu. we keep hearing that passion word. that's what we are seeing here in d.c. a lot of joy and celebration. late last night, president-elect trump at one of the inaugural preinaugural balls he attended here with his wife and the pence family greeting and spending time with their biggest donors and supporters. a lot of pomp and circumstance in washington, d.c. again, as we await the president -- as we await the inauguration, president-elect trump at church, on his way to the white house for tea. >> what about security, raj? are you seeing a big presence of

that as well? >> it is almost like olympics town from what we have seen. so many federal and local agents. 100 streets are shut down in the local area. people are walking in. a lot of bomb sniffing dogs. it is one of the most secure place at this moment for this inauguration. >> bubbling energy, bubbling tensions too as about to get to raj mathai live from the national mall in d.c. 6:10 right now. in fact, happening today, protests planned across the bay area in response toed today's inauguration. 7:00 a.m. in oakland, a general strike is scheduled for the federal building on clay street. in san francisco, a resist trump marat 8:00 a.m. following that, a resist trump rally is what they are calling it noon on california street.

we have a microclimate weather alert at 6:13. heavy rain pouring now. that's where we are seeing the heaviest rain that is slowly shifting off to the east. we're also getting heavy rain affecting the drive for palo alto. and for parts of the south bay as well near evergreen. the rain quickly moving off to the east. we will continue to see waves of this heavy rain. we will talk about the wind and the rain timeline and expect rainfall amounts at 6:18. a lighter friday commute, the conditions command you to add a couple minutes.

delays are not showing up for any of the transit systems. i'll talk about the changes in store for some of these systems and the warning we got coming up. thank you very much. breaking news at 6:14. rescue efforts are still going on in italy as a hotel was buried by an avalanche as we reported earlier this week. officials confirmed eight people have been found alive, including two young girls. the agency says the eight people have been located but it is unclear if any of have been rescued yet. 30 people were believed to have been in the resort when yesterday's avalanche struck. >> with president obama's term quickly coming to the a close, he has been showing last minute mercy. he commuted the sentences of 300 drug people.

pg&e will cut workers and replace them with foreigners. >> that is not until they reportedly train the replacements. >> a poor rhee of the political landscape. san francisco business times was the first to report 450 in-house jobs and 800 contractors will be cut. these are not jobs out in the field but rather in i.t. at least 70 of those jobs will go to india. and the pink slip workers we're told two days will have to train their replacements first the company is changing its computer systems, sending supports for systems overseas. pg&e will hire 100 new workers. but this comes on the day president-elect trump becomes president trump.

mr. trump has said he is going to look poorly on companies that send jobs overseas. pg&e as you well know, has been under the mike with federal government agencies as well. well, unless president trump says something very, very unusual in its inaugural address, the stock markets will not move much. the markets generally sink a bit in the weeks following a new person in office. the dow down for a fifth straight day thursday. looking for two things business wise. tariff issues and corporate tax. >> trying to read the tea leaves. we are trying to watch the rain drops. wet roadways. the south bay getting the worst of it. >> in recent history.

stay in if you can the drive is pretty treacherous. >> especially for the south bay. it is windy and cold. let's look at the radar now. some of the heaviest rain clearing san jose. but it was just there. it created puddles on the roadways. standing water. another wave moving in from the peninsula. as we get a closer look where the showers are now, you may have heard claps of thunder, flashes of lightning. that activity has since calmed down. we look at the heavy rainfall through los altos. evergreen, it is still pouring. you will be out here within the next few minutes. if you're following me on facebook and twitter, let me

know how things are where you are. looking at the timeline of what else we're expecting as we go through the day. by 10:30, still spotty showers and possibly a few more thunderstorms in the forecast with some strong winds. 2:30, we're still seeing some rain coming down. and even the evening commute will be wet. until we start to the see a few more breaks in this activity later tonight into tomorrow. inch and a quarter to two inches in the north bay. heavy rain in the sonoma area, petaluma where there is a flash flood warning domestic e. for the south bay, a possibility of anywhere from three to four inches of rain. all of that rainfall and also strong winds may bring down trees. vianey, how are the winds looking? >> when we started in the half hour, we saw winds 30 to 36 with

gusts 46 miles per hour. a wind advisory does remain in place. the winds get a little bit lighter but they are still fairly strong. san francisco, 19 miles per hour. redwood city, 23 miles per hour. and even near napa, 22 miles per hour. with a high wind advisory, we are expecting winds stronger than 35 plus. of course we have seen downed trees along highway. this is going to bring the potential to see a lot of issues especially with high profile vehicles. this will be something to as you continue throughout your day. we are expecting high wind advisory to be in effect until 10:00 a.m. after that, the winds should be decreasing the next couple of hours. kari, how are the changes coming the next couple of days? >> by sunday, we are expecting the next wave of some heavy rain and strong winds moving in

before we see the conditions quieting down. in the seven-day forecast, highs reaching into the 50s. more rain until monday. then on tuesday, we'll get a little bit of a break there. it will be nice to see that sunshine. until then, more rain in the forecast. it is also knocking down trees, mike. what's an update on the highway 17 tree. >> vianey was talking about it. it is a risk. highway 17 is the biggest impact we see for any of the incidents that seems to be related to it. southbound 17 is where the location has been given to chp. just about summit road. chp has not yet arrived. more details on specifics. but so far both southbound lanes are closed. however, i have seen traffic on the sensors at least through the area. be prepared for a track to break. northbound is distracted if not impacted by what's going on there as well.

overnight. a tree came crash be down in the slow lane of highway 13 in oakland. it happened at 2:00 in the morning. it took about an hour for crews to clear the scene. >> this is going to be a tough weekend for a lot of folks. >> we will see more waves of rain moving in. a very tough drive. heavy rain coming down in spots. as we look at all our cameras is and our microclimate forecast. chilly temperatures, gusty winds and heavy rain in spots. it is only 46 in san francisco. look at that radar. we see the returned to the city. also for the north bay. where in the south bay we are taking a bit of a break. another wave of rain moving in. as you head down from mill bury to palo alto, steady showers will continue. and a brief very heavy downpour through is sunny veil, moving

planned for here at home. let's begin our coverage with raj with what we can expect during today's ceremony. you described it as a buzz out there on the national mall. >> reporter: it is buzzing. so much energy and passion on the national mall. right when you arrive in washington, d.c. you can just feel it. a lot happening now this morning as we lean towards the inauguration. let me step out of the way and show you what's happening in the national mall. it is a little empty now. just wait another hour or two and this place will fill up with hundreds of thousands of people it is tough to get in here. they closed 100 city blocks in the district of columbia. people are walking and taking metro just to access. as for the headliners, let's start with president-elect donald trump. let's take you to the church a few blocks away from where we're standing. the future first lady, melania trump just attended a brief church ceremony.

let's show you the white house. you figure this country is so emotional regardless if you're for president-elect trump or against him. also emotional for the obama family. president obama just left his letter president-elect trump. that's tradition on the desk at the oval office he will be departing. they will greet him tea in the next 15 minutes. and then the obamas will be departing to palm springs after the inauguration. as for the inauguration, a live shot of the capital. they are getting ready. all the people gathering around. a lot of politicians, dignitaries and vips. we mentioned the last self days the boycott. so many members of congress are boycotting this inauguration. plenty of members of congress are coming here. they will be here. including more local representatives. leader pelosi and our new senator harris. senator harris told us she is

excited about this inauguration. but taking this all with a grain of salt and hefty skepticism. >> this will be one of those teams we will each be challenged to speak up when we something happening that is wrong and unfair. >> and on that note, there are a lot of protesters here. we mentioned the passion in the city. so many people here to support mr. trump. but also about 100 protests they're expecting around the city, which means thousands on of people against the president-elect. this one just a short while ago on the city streets here near the national mall. but it is not all negative news for mr. trump. in fact, he was glowing -- he was basking in the glory last night at his preinaugural ball. he, along with mellanania greet their biggest donors and supporters.

of. raj doing his best for us. >> reporter: that building is the federal building. the on organizers are calling it a general strike against the inauguration of donald. they're targeting this building. the president-elect has threatened to use it to kick out undocumented immigrants and set up a registries for muslims. when there has been mass demonstrations, vandals have broken windows, spray painted graffiti and damage. that's why some business owners here downtown are nervous. some taking precautions by boarding up their windows and pleading for a peaceful protest.

we are talking about what has been happening out there in the bay area. >> kris sanchez is live in san carlos to show damage after a tree almost fell onto a home behind you there, kris. >> reporter: right. the sound of wind will definitely keep you up at night when you know the ground is as saturated as it has been. this is a large oak in the back of a home in san carlos. it is leaning into the home, into the neighbor's as well. according to the fire department, no one was hurt. but the homeowners will likely lose that beautiful tree. we could see more coming down because the ground is saturated. there is a high wind advisory in effect through 10:00 this morning. our day started 3:30. we saw lightning over redwood city, rain coming down in buckets. dry conditions. now the rain has picked up once again. this is likely a preview what you can expect in your day around the bay area. kris sanchez, today in the bay.

rhetoric amongst students and the community. not only today but throughout the entire weekend, thousands of women will march in d.c. and the bay area. there are five marchs that begin here. san jose at 10:00 in the morning. oakland at 10:00 at madison square. and san francisco at 3:00 in the afternoon. pioneer park. these are a look at some of the pictures from last night at the lincoln memorial prior to today. a message to the crowd. the busy world listening closely to what donald trump might say. unless president trump says something unusual, the markets should be fine. >> it is a big if. >> it is a big if, laura.

he is an unpredictable fellow. political advisers have looked it over a couple of times. >> that is the keane group. that will get lost in the news cycle today. the business world trying to figure out who things this morning. trump promised to work with congress for huge cuts to congress. it may have been put on the back burner. america has some of the highest corporate taxes in the western world. that tariff issued, i talked about it so many times. mr. trump said over and of he's going to use his power of president to add a 35% tariff for foreign-made products that

he thinks should have been manufactured here. anything in china. most things by apple and foreign-made cars. from a business point of view, that is the biggest threat. >> we'll see big changes there. it will be an interesting time to keep o. thank you very much. 6:47 right now. talking about communities in the santa cruz mountains. talking about all the rain we have been seeing. they are really bracing for it. with each passing storm, new issues seem to arise. ever since last week, landslides and down trees have been a common sight. there are new concerns about the lexington reservoir spilling off like it did last week. >> the rock slides were not just in the santa cruz mountains. o'shaugnessy boulevard in san

francisco is actually scheduled to reopen after big hit by multiple rock slides. crews decided to knock the rocks away before they could fall down. >> they did that with the avalanche warnings. >> talk about snow. there will be more this weekend. >> oh, yeah. it's really coming down right now. there won't be much of a time where you get a break of snow in the sierra. we're getting heavy rain in the bay area. a wide view of the radar. you can see the snow in the sierra. a lot of red here on the map too showing the most intense downpours. now moving through san francisco. early, you may have heard

rumbles on of thunder, flashes of lightning. now that lightning has calmed down. we have heavy rain moving down the peninsula, into the south bay. san jose, right now in downtown, it is really pouring also around lopitas. clearing morgan hill and gilroy area. more rain heading in. we will see this off and on throughout the morning commute. at 9:00, a lot of people out there on the roadways. a look at how much rain we could have on the radar. will be breaks with a little bit of a chance to dry out and watch the water levels recede. but there will be more rain and possible some thunder and lightning on the heels as we go into this afternoon at 5:00 during the evening commute. still seeing very heavy pockets of rain moving through the peninsula and south bay. the area could see rain at any point today. even early tomorrow morning, spotty showers moving through.

as we are taking a bit of a break from the heaviest rain in advance of the next storm system moving in. we are tracking two stormsment the first moving through now. the second moving through early saturday into sunday morning. and the heaviest rainfall totals will be for the santa cruz mountains looking at an additional 1.25 to 2 inches of rain and up to 2.5 for much of the santa cruz mountains, over through parts of the peninsula. with all of this rain falling that may the reservoirs. as i ahead over to vianey, how is it looking for the water levels on the reservoirs? >> as you mentioned, this is the second of three storms. right now a lot of these reservoirs are pretty high in terms of capacity. the only one at 100 as of the latest update is the uvas at 100%. k coyote, 90%. lexington 92%.

we could see overflow in the area. the only one that is about 33% is quad loup reservoir. that is not too concerning right now. uvas reservoir, anything above 70% or 80%, is something to keep a close eye on. how is it looking the next couple of hours? >> the winds have died down. we have to keep an eye on the water levels, vianey. rain moving in the next couple of days. not until late monday, tuesday will we catch a break. inland areas, temperatures in the 50s. mostly sunny skies in the

forecast. or the end of the forecast, rain this weekend. >> we have a cancellation of the first san francisco bay heading out to south san francisco from oakland and alameda. reportedly canceled because of mechanical issues with the tougher winds and inclement weather. just a note for the ferry system. recovering from a 10-minute delay over in the pittsburgh area. it has been restored back to service. bart had longer trains and better service between san francisco and oakland today. bart said they will add trains and longer trains to help with some of the crowds. they may have to adjust service as well. i have put that on facebook. head over there if you have any questions the next couple of
