3:00 pm
these images of a large prott protests across america and here in the bay area. following donald trump's inauguration. these are images from just about 30 minutes ago. large protests going on in the plaza in berkeley. one of the many areas in the bay area where people have come out into the streets to show their feelings, express this big day across our nation. >> yeah, we had a look at what was going on in a plaza in oakland as well a short time ago. in the meantime, some very violent clashes in washington, d.c. this morning, but right now, all seems to be fairly peaceful. we're seeging the tail end right now of the inaugural parade and procession with clearly a lot of horses there. and some american flags, and
3:01 pm
it's been a very busy day. >> it's been more of a celebratory tone there, as we see the parade continue. and the first family now in the stands watching it go by, and actually waving to some of the participants. raj mathai has been in washington, d.c. giving us coverage today. he joins us again from the mall out there today. big crowds earlier. >> big crowds earlier. in fact, we're going to talk about all the crowds and all of the protesters. really, we talked about the inauguration parade that's wrapping up right now. the president and first lady watching that. the night is young here in washington, d.c. their first inaugural ball, they're going to leave in just about an hour. in fact, their first dance is scheduled. it's very precise on the timeline, at 5:30 pacific time. there's three inaugural balls at the president and first lady will attend. we were talking about protesters as well. let's take a look. we have seen them throughout the day, in fact, even into the
3:02 pm
night. what we're seeing, a lot of small fires. some damage. we have seen a lot of this similar to what we have seen in years past in downtown oakland, but this is in washington, d.c. really, the crowds running from one area to the other, but there's such a heavy police force here, military and local police, that the agents have it well under control. but there have been small flash grenades and pepper spray use throughout the day. in terms of the crowds, what you saw on television, you probably saw the big crowds next to the capitol during the inauguration. but if you went back several sections, as you will, in the national mall, the crowds were very thin. you compare that to president obama's inauguration, it was a lot more full. now, despite this, donald trump was still enjoying the moment and the history of it all, and he addressed his followers. >> and while they celebrated in our nation's capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.
3:03 pm
that all changes starting right here and right now because this moment is your moment. it belongs to you. >> this is night number one in the united states of america under president donald trump. we talked about in the several days past many members of congress across the bay area and in congress who boycotted the inauguration and there were also very familiar faces in attendance. among them, representative and congressman nancy pelosi, the leader, leader pelosi was here. aig rolehere, of course. such a prominent part of the government, meeting briefly with the incoming president, shaking some hands there in the capitol rotunda before he entered the stage. and of course, also our new senator, kamala harris, weighing in on this occasion. she was here, but she says she has a little hint of skepticism
3:04 pm
moving forward. >> i feel very strongly that this is going to be one of those moments in time where we're going to each be challenged to stand up and speak up when we see something happening that is wrong and unfair. >> hillary clinton, of course, former president bill clinton was here and the former first lady hillary clinton, such a bitter campaign for the last 18 months, but she was here along with the other former presidents in jimmy carter, george w. bush. george h.w. still recovering in houston. so we saw a lot of familiar faces here, and of course, all the supporters and demonstrators and protesters here on the national mall. now, let's send it back to the bay area where there's still a lot of demonstrations. earlier, we checked with in robert handa who was talking about the people along the golden gate bridge. let's bring in christie smith there also in san francisco. >> well, raj, at one point, there were actually several demonstrations going on here in
3:05 pm
san francisco at the same time along market street and also in the financial district. then about noon today, some of the groups kale together where we are here at california and kerney. a very diverse group, and they seemed to have the same message, and that is resisting what they fear may come along with the presidency of donald trump. sort of a resistance march that some considered the people's inaug rasuration with 25 differ community groups. they were loud and peaceful. demonstrators held signs as they walked saying things like not my president. they made stops outside different businesses. at one point, urging members of the tech community not to participate in any sort of muslim registry. again, there were several actions happening simultaneously. at one point, some blocks wells fargo bank by locking arms. there were a number of high school students here. many gatheredt the california street location because they say that trump owns part of the building here.
3:06 pm
>> we have also shut down 555 california building, which really represents this merger between the corporations and the state. >> i have a lot of friends that are, like, you know, undocumented. and you know, it's something that's really important to me and everybody around me, and i feel like i have to stand up for my community. >> now, what we kept hearing from a number of people was a resolve to fight, but also some fear, concern about losing a social safety net, losses to health care, women's rights, education. on this end, what we saw was peaceful police followed demonstrators closely on motorcycles as they made their way through the street. i checked in with san francisco police, and they tell me that so far, they have made today 29 demonstration-related arrests. again, this isn't over. another demonstration is planned for 5:00 tonight at u.n. plaza. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news.
3:07 pm
>> okay, christie, thank you. nearly 30 demonstrations and protests in the bay area or at least in san francisco. an estimated 100 demonstrations and protests here in washington, d.c. now, we should note, especially as it relates to the bay area and here in the capital for this inauguration, there are plenty of people who are supporting donald trump and plenty from the bay area who made the trip here to washington. we saw them last night. we're going to see them again tonight at some of the inaugural balls. in a few minutes, we'll hear what they have to say, their message to people back at home and around the world, about giving donald trump a chance. guys, back to you. see you in a few minutes. >> we can all just have to go forward from here. thank you very much. we'll check back with you in a bit. >> no doubt, as we hear many messages of trying to unite now behind our new president. the obamas are moving out of the white house. but this is not going to be the last we see of the former president. >> the work of perfecting our union is never finished. and we look forward to joining you in that effort as fellow

thanks to those good old red solo cups. >> you have to love that they repurposed those. >> from another viewer, patrick, you can see the snow that's just piled up in front of his south lake tahoe house. we are told somewhere there is a garage door back behind all that snow. >> we really love to see your storm photos. you can tag us on twitter, instagram, even post to our facebook page. we could show your photos and video, even your red solo cups on our newscast. >> all right, you have not seen anything yet. you talked about the fact that the heaviest amount of rain in terms of totals is really coming on sunday and a lot of sneas well. >> yeah, looking at by the time we get to monday, maybe three to five feet of snow in the sierra. you saw the user submitted pictures and videos of the snow in the sierra. here's one more from knob hill, san francisco. look closely. lightning bolt striking the transamerica pyramid this morning, about 4:13. thank you, simon, for sending the video for us. and a twin bolt off the side.
